Reboot only gives a blue screen on my iBook G4

Got MS Office for Xmas. Installed it and it worked fine. This a.m. I installed an update. While surfing the web my mouse froze - had to reboot while holding down command and ctrl.
Every time I did this I could work for a shorter and shorter period of time before the mouse would freeze again. Got out the manual and managed to get the install 1 disk into the drive.
Manual says "Choose Installer>Open disk utility ...etc.
I saw nothing called "Installer" so tried to look it up in spotlight - found it, clicked on it and the whole thing froze up again. As I have been trying various things , the computer allows me less and less time before it freezes up.
Now I am to the point of rebooting and most times getting only afrozen light blue screen, andsome times getting the desk top and then getting a glimpse of the Install Disk 1 contents and trying to find "Installer" Or "disk utility" I am allowed one or two mouse clicks and freeze up happens again.
As I write this on my PC I keep trying to reboot my MAC laptop using command ctrl and now for the last 4 reboots I only get the light blue screen. I think I'm dead in the H2O.
Got any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Option 1: put your original Mac OS install disk #1
into the CD drive and then shut down the computer.
press the power button, release it, and immediately
press and hold the C key. this will boot the
computer off the CD. after you click the language,
you'll see the install screen - don't install, go up
to the menu at the top and switch to Disk Utility.
select your hard drive and run a Disk Repair and a
Permissions Repair. Note any errors that appear when
you run the Disk Repair (don't bother noting anything
during the Permissions Repair). Quit and reboot your
computer.
If that doesn't work - I'll reply with Option 2.
Well thanks for the tip on how to start from the installer disk. I was holding down "c" when I pushed the power button rather than hitting just after pushing power. I went thru the repair disk and permissions deal and got several things listed that were being checked in the repair disk list. The only one that came up red was "illegal name" I swear to God this is MY computer and not somebody elses, and the copy of MS Office was legal and official.
I restarted and got the dead blue screen again.
I restarted again using command ctrl and got to the desk top and was allowed 2 mouse clicks before the screen completely froze.
I tried restarting from the install disk 3 more times before I could make it work. I think it's kinda like double clicking a mouse - you have to hit the "c" key at just the right time. "repair disk" this time said I had no problems. "Repair permissions" changed a bunch of stuff so fast that I couldn't even read it.
Restarted again and now for 15 mins it has worked perfectly!!!
Thank you Oh Wise One! Now I have to go out and do somebody a favor to repay you! THANKS!!!

  • Windows XP will not boot up, and only gives a blue screen on Qosmio F20

I am having a similar problem to this:
    http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic26409.html
The only solution to this is to reinstall/repair Windows XP Media Centre Edition:
    http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?t=8356&highlight=windows+repair
This consists of reinstalling ONLY Windows (without formatting) the Recovery CD supplied with my computer cannot do this. I really do not want to format my computer, and being a sealed unit I do not want to remove the HDD from the laptop.
How can I carry out the process above with my current copy of Windows XP Media Centre supplied with the computer on the Recovery Disk?
    Thanks in advance.
    [Edited by: admin]

You could try to repair the OS using the XP repair console.
But the Toshiba recovery CD does not contains such console because its not a original Microsoft CD but it contains only a image files.
So if you want you can remove the HDD and connect it via external USB HDD controller to another computer.
Then you could get access to the HDD and could save all important files.

  • Why does my iPhoto red eye reduction tool only give me blue or black blobs in the eyeballs that look completely unacceptable?

Why does my iPhoto red eye reduction tool only give me blue or black blobs in the eyeballs that look completely unacceptable? Automatic mode makes blue blobs that cover iris and even eyelid! Manual mode gives black dots, not at all hte shape of a oerson's iris as seen in a picture.

And again the answer is simply
THere is no fix - that is the way it works - you can post as many times as you want but it will not change the fact that that is the way that iPhoto works
    No fix
    No work around
It is what it is - nothing more - nothing less

I have not researched further in solving this issue for a couple of months.  Still using my iPhone 6+ 128GB with around 64GB free space, not dare to load more stuff at the risk of reboot loop.  I am still at iOS 8.1.  Anyone know would 8.1.3 solve the issue?  Thanks a lot.

  • My mac pro only shows a blue screen during startup? how do i get out of this to the desktop?

Cannot access the desktop, only the Apple sign and pinwheel icon come on, after a couple minutes it goes to blue screen only. Have held shift during bootup to start in safemode, but this doesnt even allow you to choose safe mode. Please help.

Try holding option+Apple Command + s keys to get into single user mode.  May be a little unnerving as it will get you to text based screen. Grab a pencil and paper and copy the commands that are listed also pay attention to the spaces.
    /sbin/fsck -fy <return>
If the it says File System Modified hit the up arrow key it will repeat the line you typed. Hit return.
If it DOES NOT say modified then type in the second line.
    /sbin/mount -uw /<return>
    At the prompt type reboot<return>
Let us know if it helps.

  • IBook G4 only dances the "blue screen freeze"

My iBook G4 won't boot completely. It will go past the grey screen with the Apple icon and time wheel, but when it gets to the blue screen it freezes.
I've reset PRAM, PMU, and run Apple h/w test successfully. I've tried booting from various devices including the original distribution CD's, TechTool Pro CD, TechTool Pro eDrive, an external firewire drive, and of course the internal drive. There is no problem selecting another drive, but the end result is almost always the same: it freezes on the blue screen (I write almost because one time it did boot fully before freezing).
But wait, there's more! I had noticed in the last week or so that light on the power supply cord would occasionally blink. So I pulled the bottom cover off and reseated the DC-in board, checking the cable connections into the logic board at the same time. After putting the cover back on, the system booted! However, I was only able to work for an hour or so before it froze again. I took the bottom cover off again and checked the logic board connections a second time, and was once again able to boot. However, it froze again within a few minutes.
So, what can the problem be? The DC-in board? A connector? I have an appointment with a Mac Genius tomorrow morning at 10:00. However, this system has already had three logic boards - two of which I had to pay for out-of-pocket, and I believe that the last board is just out of warranty...
    Please help!

I would mention to the genius bar, that it has gone through 3 repairs without results
Seeing as the genius bar may want an arm and a leg for this next logic board, consider these repair shops to compare prices:

  • Brand new MBP will only boot to blue screen

    Help!
Worked fine for about an hour or two and then completely locked up. I had to do a forced shutdown to get it to turn off.. But now it will only boot to this weird blue screen with just a cursor.
    Any ideas?

Actually, for a brand new machine a clean install is not a bad idea.
The original disc images are copied in bulk. The tiniest little glitch can cause later problems. It really doesn't add that much time to the initial setup process and you can also discount it as a cause if the problem re-occurs.
You should not have to do a clean install again.

  • MacBook Pro gives a blue screen when I try to start from a bootable usb stick

Since yeasterday my MacBook Pro is refusing to startup. The starup proccess goes like Apple Logo, Spinning wheel, white dispaly and stops - freezes there.

When I start my Macbook Pro from the bootable usb stick it gives me a blue screen. I have tried to reset PRAM but nothing.
I am attaching 2 images of the blue screen.

    Hi.
First of I haven\t upgraded in about 2 mounths.. And I just upgraded now, and rebooted, now gnome just showes a bright blue screen and nothing else happens . After pushing ctrl (plus) delete (plus) backspace I can get into gdm login screen. But entering user and pass, I get the same bright blue screen.. I have tryed to move\delete everything starting with gnome in .config without success. I have also tryed : find / /iname pacnew Noone relates to xorg as fair as I can tell. (keyboaprd is also messed up, not beeng able to write the complete command I typed)
My .xinitrc looks like this :
    exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
and this still displays a bright blue screen..
I had to edit .xinitrc to start a browser and a xterm in order to write here..
Any Idea what to do to fix my gnome desktop?
    Everything worked before the restart.
    No I\m not root.

  • Connecting IPod Touch gives a blue screen of death on windows xp home

    Hi,
I recently got a new ipod touch. I downloaded the itunes 9.1 and connected the ipod touch with my PC to configure it for the time first time. After connecting the machine detected it as a camera and then it gave me a BSOD.
I updated my machine with all the automatic updates from microsoft, even tried downloading and updating some patches manually but nothing worked out.
I searched the apple support pages and did the activities mentioned there but none seems to be working
I have no other USB devices connected on my machine, there are no webcams or printers attached to the PC
Any help is appreciated, I have been trying for last 2 days and finally gave up
    Thanks

Ta very much, Jason! That's useful to know.
These sorts of outdated-software clashes can hang around for the longest time. Back before you came on board, one of the common causes of BSODs was a version of Roxio Easy CD creator (5.0 I think ...) that wasn't actually compatible with XP. If you had it on board, it quite was plausible that you couldn't get your XP PC to boot ... but for some folks the problem lay dormant, and their first sign of trouble with it was when the PC had iTunes installed on it, and the PC started blue-screening if they plugged in an iPod, inserted a CD, or sometimes just tried to launch iTunes.
Used to catch in particular folks who had upgraded their OS from ME to XP.
Mercifully extinct or vanishingly rare now ... but it kept showing up for me here in 2005 through 2007 ...

  • IBook G4 Freezes at Startup Window or gives Blank Blue Screen

Ok, so I realize my description is long, but I've been going through these forums gleaning off the wisdom of the past...and so here's what I've tried
    Description of Problem:
    1. Computer froze, had to be shut down by holding down power button
    2. On restart, goes to apple pages with status wheel (looks like turning gear). But then either freezes on that page, or more frequently goes to a blank light blue screen.
    3. Tried restarting from install CD, ends in blank light blue screen.
    4. Restarted holding option, tried to restart from a firewire clone of the drive, ends in blank light blue screen.
    5. DId a reset to firmware, typed in two lines of code as found on discussion board, it restarted, no effect.
    TARGET FIREWIRE
Opened computer as target firewire drive
    6. used disk utility to repair, there was nothing to repair.
    7. Used DiskWarrior to rebuild.
    8. Backed up drive using superduper
    UNMOUNTED FIREWIRE
    9. No change
HELP???? This computer is NOT under AppleCare anymore.

This EXACT thing has just happened to me!
    It is a 12 inch ibook G4.
I am hoping it will come back up one more time so that I can transfer it to a Terra server I have here in the lab.
I am wondering what I am going to do...

  • IMac will only safe boot (blue screen when not safe booting).

A buddy asked me to help with his Intel based iMac. It was giving a blue screen when trying to boot up (and an odd cursor along with the blue screen). The cursor moves around the blue screen but looks like two cursors. One cursor is a normal arrow pointer, the second is a rectangle about .25 inch wide and 1 inch tall made up of about 10 horizontal lines.
I'm very familiar with Macs and OS X and was sure it was probably a messed up preference file (most likely login preference). It wasn't.
    Here's the odd circumstances:
I have an intel macbook that if I use firewire target disk mode I can boot just fine off his iMac.
His computer will not boot off my Macbook that is in firewire target disk mode.
We cloned his hard drive to an external firewire hard drive (using Carbon Copy Cloner), my Macbook boots off it just fine, his iMac will not.
He's been wanting to go to Leopard so we upgraded his computer (did basic upgrade), but it still blue screened (with odd cursor).
Then we did an erase and install. Still no difference in behavior.
I would almost be convinced that it's a hardware failure, but it will safe boot every time.
Here's what happened when it died. His son was playing a Star Wars game (I'm not sure which one). The kid was in the middle of the game and paused it when it was time for dinner. When the kid went back to play, the computer was frozen. They tried everything to unfreeze it and ended up powering it down. Started the blue screen ever since.
He's going to contact Apple (it's barely still under it's warranty) but I was hoping someone here has another idea what it could be.

I found this topic while trying to find an answer to my problem. It seems we have a similar thing going on with our imacs (although mine is a much older crt imac). I'll copy and paste my original post from the imac board :
    Hi
I received a free imac snow (G3 500mhz) from someone. He told me it was broke, and someone told him the logic board needed to be replaced.
I brought it home and tried to start it up. It gave the '?' folder icon. I started up from an OS 9.1 cd - Success! Except there was no HD. I opened it up and discovered that the HD wasn't connect to the ATA cable. I was able to start up to a previously installed Tiger. Except once it booted it would quickly freeze - the mouse pointer would turn into a scrambled beach ball (very strange) and wouldn't move.
I did some research and found about the potential problem with OS X and the imac's firmware. I restarted from the 9.1 CD and installed that OS. Everything seemed fine and was running ok (from my limited time on it). I then DL'd the latest firmware for the imac (4.1.9.) and tried to run it. Except the message came up that the latest firmware had already been installed. So i guess thats a good thing. I don't have to worry about firmware being a problem.
So i did a zero out wipe on the HD and installed tiger from the dvd. But on the first restart after installation (where i should go to the set up assistant) I get the scrambled beach ball and it freezes.
I thought perhaps the HD is faulty and ran disk utility on it - it came back as fine. I doubled checked to make sure it was set to 'master'. it sure was. I decided to swap out the HD anyways since i can't see what else could be the problem and put in a different 30gb IDE drive. I once again zeroed out the drive and did a fresh install of tiger. On restart i get the same scrambled beach ball and the freeze.
I guess i should describe the scrambled beach ball. It's seems like the beach ball icon, except the bits that make it up are out of order and glitched out.. perhaps a video problem?
Could this really be a logic board problem? It was working in OS 9.1 fine. It starts up from system CDs and DVDs fine. Wouldn't a logic board exhibit the same problems on those systems?
    Anyone have any idea?
Update - starting in Safe mode (restart with shift held down) works, and i was able to update to the latest version of Tiger, but once i restart with the full system i get the same problem.
This seems to me that it ISN'T a logic board problem, but more of a system software problem. Now my question is how do i isolate and fix the problem in Tiger?
I guess i'll post this question in the Tiger forum, but if anyone has any ideas please let me know.
    Thanks
