Reboot problem..clean install
I re installed from the two support discs and find that garage band is missing. How do I download a copy ?
The solution as follows. It took three mounts of the software for the gb to load. I observe that on the two previous attempts the disc failed to load several items.
Third time lucky.
Possible soln. With the first two re-loads , when gb was not mounted. The high speed cable modem was "on" and "active"
I turned off the modem for the third remount.
Thanks.

I can connect with my banking websites but the login page will not come up. This is a recent occurrence and I have done virus scans and have also recently done a clean instal of Windows 7. The problem persists. I can connect to any other website with no problems. When I close FF it appears to close and Task manager shows as not running but it will not reopen. If I attempt to uninstall I am told that FF is running and needs to be closed. I have to reboot to get to close and be able to reopen.
I can connect to the bank sites with IE. However I really don't like IE.
I am using Win7 Professional on a Sony notebook VGN SZ55I don't have an answer, but I experienced the same problems trying to set up an airport express to route traffic to my stereo.
Apple Extreme router, iMac and laptop all worked just fine for months, upon installing Airport Express (step by step, according to instructions), all **** broke loose. Airport Utility was unable to see my Airport Extreme router, after hours of rebooting computer, cable modem, router, and finally a hard reset of the Airport Extreme router, it is finally recognized by Airport Utility again.
Recreated network, iMac connects to the internet just fine, laptop (Macbook Air) connects to the network just fine, but will not connect to the internet. Network diagnostics does not help, it gets to the "do you have a router? If so, reboot" stage, and never seems to see the router.
Any suggestions? -
OK I've got a problem.
Short story-
I tried doing a clean install of 9.2.2 as the first stage of an OSX upgrade. It was a disaster so.... I had kept a copy of the old System Folder. I moved the new system folder to a second drive and successfully booted using the old system folder.
Everything is working OK except that I get generic icons for some things on Drive 1 (boot drive) and can not rebuild the desktop! The bar goes across about 1/4 or less of the way and the system hangs. I tried this booting off of my Norton CD and I can rebuild disk 2 but not disk 1.
Longer story.
I triesd a clean install using a program called "clean-install assistant". Everything seemed to go per instructions. I loaded 9.1 and then did the two upgrades to get to 9.2 and 9.2.2. I had the upgrades on a CD.
When I reloaded the system items that the assistant had saved, the system would load up through display of extention icons and then hung.
So I moved the new system file off to Disk 2, renamed the System file copy as "System Folder" and chose it as the startup system.
All is OK except for the item noted. My word documents, for example, have lost sight of their author although I can open them from Word.
As I am booting from an unmessed with System Folder I'm not sure what to do.
HELP!!Well it's still sort of a mystery to me, but I'm back to normal.
I asked Norton again to repair on startup. I did a reboot from the front panel switch and on start up the Apple disk repair window really went to work. (I could hear the disk hard at work!)
It fixed it.
So much for a clean install. I think I'll now try OSX on Disc #2 as I think I can then boot off either if I have a major problem. -
Permission Problems Since Clean Install of Mt. Lion
I did a clean install of Mountain Lion last month. I reinstalled all my apps from freshly downloaded installers, rather than copy anything to my pristine system folder. I copied my music, photos, and other documents from my Time Machine drive. Now, I have constant permission problems on all these folders. I don't have permission to do anything to any of these folders or subfolders. I can't rip a CD to iTunes, I can't sync my iPhone. I can't download anything. I can change the permission on each folder individually, but there must be thousands of them. There must be an easier way. Changing permissions for a parent folder doesn't change the subfolders. Disk Utility reports no problems when I repair disk permissions. Thanks in advance for any help.
Also, the iPhoto app disappeared after the clean install. I don't know how to re-install it. Do I have to wipe my drive clean again and install Leopard from my original DVD that came with my iMac? That would be a huge job to get back to Mountain Lion. I'll post this question in another thread and link it here.Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’renot going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar. -
HT1379 problems of clean install
Hey guys, I basically tried everything I can to actually have a clean install for this new system but I have found this problem below:
As we all prob know, in order to clean install, you have to acess disk utility to format the disk and then reinstall the system.
But I found out its not possible for me to click/select disk utility on my screen, I tried to start my computer by booting from DVD (I burned a lion DVD as well as a mountain lion dvd), I also tried to just hold option and get into recovery hd mode, as well as reboot from Mountain Lion USB, when I get into "DISK UTILITIES" as you can see the picture, I can not click "continue", as the pic shows here, I cant click continue, I tried to reinstall the system many times and It always come out the same.
I was wondering if anyone of you know the problem is
or any other way to clean install (or format the entire disk)?
thanks a lot.iTunes --> iPod was designed as a "one-way transfer". You can't use iTunes alone to take tracks from your iPod and put them back into an empty iPod library.
Hopefully you made a backup of your iTunes library before you did your Erase & Install. You can then restore your iTunes library from your backup.
If you don't have a backup... you'll need to use some type of third-party software such as iPodRip to copy your tracks back to iTunes from your iPod. This is not a practice that is supported by Apple, and there is always a risk involved with doing this. Hopefully it will work for you. -
T500 win 7 clean install wifi problems
Hi there,
I recently did a clean install of windows 7 on my t500 thinkpad. I have downloaded all of the related drivers and installed them.
My problem is that I can not make a connection at all by wire or wireless. The wifi link 5100 does not even show up in the device manager.
Any advice on what I need to do to get this computer running properly again?
thanks!Exactly, once it installs drivers it will detect additional HW and then install more drivers. It may take 2-3+ restart and reboots to fully detect and install all of the drivers.

TIGER clean install (PREVIEW problem)
I did a clean install of TIGER - all fine and ok. I then loaded up MS Office for MAC (like I had before on Panther) , then posted some .pdf files (2) to my Public Folder on my iDisk (for my son to access in Canada) - these were originally WORD docs. (in Panther days) with photos in the text and I`d retrieved them from my external HD where I`d backed them up before the `clean install`, like a good boy. I`d saved them as pdf`s to my desktop then dragged them over the PUBLIC icon - they both loaded in due course (albeit very slowly) - I went to check this morning and clicked on one .pdf file expecting it to open in PREVIEW. All I get is the spinning ball and I can`t even force a quit on PREVIEW either. I even tried to access them the same way on my iBook but the same problem occurs.
I`ve repaired Permissions and Verified too but it "still aint a working" - any ideas?
Plain English please as I`m not IT techy.
Russell (Uk)From Apple:
Currently, the iDisk is online and operational. We have not received large numbers of reports to indicate that there is an issue with connecting and interacting with the remote iDisk in Mac OS X v10.4.3.
We were able to connect to your iDisk Public Folder and upload a 5 MB file to it on a computer running Mac OS X v10.4.3. We were able to delete this file and disconnect as well.
To further test your ability to copy files to the iDisk, please place a file (that you have tried to upload to the iDisk before) in your computer's Shared folder, which is located in /Users/Shared on the main level of your hard disk.
After doing so, please create a new Mac OS X user account and test to see if the error you reported occurs in a new user. Creating a new user in Mac OS X is actually quite an easy process; it will greatly assist in isolating the cause of the issue you reported.
Please completely review the following AppleCare support article for more information about setting up multiple users in Mac OS X:
Adding a new user account to your computer:
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh168.html>
Once you have created a new user, log out of your current user and then log in to your new test user account. Enter your .Mac user information in the .Mac System Preferences of the new user and then try to upload a file to your remote iDisk.
After testing in the new user, feel free to log back into your normal user.
Please respond to this email and let us know if the issue occurred in the new user. Also, provide the following information:
1. What is the approximate size of the file you tried to upload?
2. A step-by-step list describing your actions prior to experiencing this issue.
3. What is the exact version of the operating system that is installed on your computer?
4. Please describe your Internet setup, how you connect, and whether you are using any network connectivity devices, such as a router, hub, or wireless base station.

Thats all fine, but it doesn't answer my question. Copying files to the iDisk will CRASH the finder in 10.4.3, forcing me to sometimes having to do a hard reboot when logging out is not possible. I realize the iDisk is a very slow transer process and for this reson it probably won't work for what I need to do, BUT if I do decide to pay 99 bucks to upgrade my trial subscription iwould like to know that apple is working on a fix for this known issue. People who have multiple macs on a network who are running panther on all the computers have no iDisk problems with crashing the finder....put put an Tiger computer on the network and the tiger computer will crash. So is Apple working on a fix to this problem?

Dear Tim,
Thank you for contacting Apple.
Copying files to your iDisk is actually a two-step process. In the first step, the Finder prepares a local cached copy of the file to be sent. In the second step, that file is actually transmitted across the internet to your iDisk. The first step is performed as quickly as your hard drive can copy the file, and accounts for the bulk of the work that the Finder believes it has to do to upload your file. This is why the progress dialog reaches the "5 seconds remaining" mark so quickly - the Finder considers its work nearly finished.
At this point, your upload may appear to stall, especially when sending a large file. However, you're really in step two of the process, and your file is actively being transmitted to your iDisk. In most cases, simply leave the progress dialog alone, and your f -
Multiple problem in clean install Leopard
Hi,
I wanted to clean install my mac and unfortunately it has broken DVD drive. I found a solution, using a target disk (from a second mac), create disk image of the Leopard install DVD, start it up from that disk and clean install it.
It works !!
Then, after the leopard installed, it ask me whether I want to restore my user preference from a backup disk. And I say yes.
After it finish. I can't login it using my regular password!!!!!
Now the problem is I can't get into leopard at all, I can't reboot from target disk (since I can't login and change the startup disk), and I can't use a CD to re-install it (got a broken disk).
Any Idea how to solve this ?First off, Mac OS X doesn't have a clean install:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
Second, installing from target disk mode only works if certain conditions are met:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1418365&tstart=0
Third, is there any data on the machine with the broken optical drive you wish to save before proceeding? -
Clean Install or Re-install? Weird Problems.
My 24" Aluminum iMac is about 4 years old. I had an issue where the applications had problems quitting. After quitting everything (some of which needed a force quit), I restarted.
The gray screen hung. Unplugged, long period gray screen with a status bar. It finally rebooted.
I ran a disk repair from utilities off my 10.6 dvd.
Everything works a bit better, but the system is SLOW. Later on, it came out of a sleep mode with a grayish/blue screen, never gave me opportunity to enter my password, then rebooted by itself after 3 minutes.
I was thinking about doing a clean install, but I wasn't sure if there was something less invasive I could do.
Also, does the 10.6 Snow Leopard CD come with the iLife applications on it?
Ugh...
Thanks for any suggestions you can give! You can reinstall Snow Leopard without erasing the HDD, but if your problems stem from something in your Home folder reinstalling will not fix the problem. If you erase the drive then reinstall Snow Leopard iLife will not be reinstalled. To reinstall iLife you must use the original discs that came with the computer. They contain the iLife files that can be reinstalled from those discs.

Tiger Install on iMac G3/400 DV reboot problem.
Hi there, first time post .
I obtained a slot loading G3/400 DV. I replaced the 10GB that was inside it, with a 80GB. It has aproximatly 320MB of RAM and does have firewire.
I believe the CD-ROM is toast, as it will not boot of a CD when 'C' is held down. I have managed to install OS 9 onto it, by transfering a clean install of 9 via firewire and upgraded it too 9.2.2. Everything worked fine. System boots fine.. etc..
I have just bought a DVD copy of Tiger for my Cube(needed 9 before for, my UD12X12 tablet). I read it is possible to install OS X via Firewire. I held down T and all that, and put X onto the 80gb via the DVD from the cube. Now, when I reboot the iMac I get a flashing folder with a ? on it, and will not rebbot on a Option hold down.
What am I doing wrong, please help.
PS: The previous HD, has a dual boot with OS X and 9; but it has a admin lock on it, and is only 10GB.
Thanks

Keep the machine in target mode, and see if the cube starts from the installation. This would be a good clue, if the install was good. -
I'm using a late 2006 2.33GHz imac.
I clean installed 10.6 from disc then updated to 10.7 from download.
Now every time my computer goes into sleep it won't wake up.
The only way it will restart is to pull the mains lead out of the imac, put it back and try until it will start.
This only happened after reinstalling. Only Apple OS was on the imac and so it must be an issue with the software I believe.....
Anyone know how to cure this problem please?
Thanks
paulThis isn't a fix, more a workaround I used when I had wake from sleep problems that lasted from some point in 10.6.x, through 10.7 and into 10.8 (got fixed for me in 10.8.2). It seems to be connected with Bluetooth failing to wake up properly:
System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'. -
Three user accounts on the same computer all link to a single copy of Firefox 3.6.8 - but one of them has suddenly lost its ability to use the program. Firefox opens in that account, but it cannot connect to the Internet. 'Done' appears at the lower left of a blank Firefox page [it's set to load a blank page initially], as though a page had finished downloading ... but Firefox does not actually generate any Internet activityx.
Previously, the Firefox connection for this account was smooth and reliable. I haven't added, upgraded or downloaded any new programs, nor made any other computer changes in recent weeks or months.
Puzzlingly - that same account still connects successfully to the Internet via Safari. And the other accounts on the same computer continue to use Firefox with no problem - including a test user-account that I set up today to help troubleshoot the problem. The blockage is restricted solely to Firefox with that one user account.
Following your Support page instructions, I did a clean-install of Firefox 3.6.8, removing both the existing Firefox 3.6.8 and the Library/Application Support/Firefox folder. Going the extra mile, I checked all accounts to be certain that no Firefox folders remained in any of them - then emptied the Trash and restarted before installing a freshly downloaded 3.6.8. But blimey - the blockage still persists for that one user account.
Firefox shows no visible cookies that might influence the connection. [It's set to delete all cookies upon closing anyway.] And I see no obvious instructions in Mac's firewall or any software program to refuse access to Firefox. The computer is stand-alone, not networked. And in any case, Firefox works just fine in the two other user accounts.
Deleting the hobbled user account is not feasible. So what is causing this roadblock? Did I miss a step in the clean-install? How can that account resume using Firefox?
Thanks in advance for your advice. If files already have been downloaded then remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.
You can also delete active-update.xml and possibly updates.xml (stores the update history).

Here's the last crash report from failure to reinstall a TM backup. Was running Yosemite and things went sideways a couple of days ago. Got through a reinstall attempt and it was working. Ended up going through all the reset hoops and flashing question marks to stalled home screen to flashing question marks with no progress. Resorted to sock Leopard disk and a basic drive erase. I have been able to get to app the store but I cannot seem to upgrade to Yosemite. My main concern is getting all my photos, movies etc back up and running. I haven't tried importing my photos folder out of TM and into old IPhoto. Not sure if the pictures will work with the old OS? Clean install of Yosemite somehow?

/System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/FA miracle!! Up and running. Somehow got to a utilities window on a reboot and was able to reinstall Yosemite and then back up from Time Machine. Funny, IPhoto didn't come over and when I opened TM there was only the current day as an option for reinstall. I was able to install iPhoto 9.6 from the app store and then create a new library and then import from the TM backup iPhoto folder. Interesting. Don't give up.

Spinning ball problems--need to do a clean install--have questions
Hi
background:
I have a G4 (quicksilver) since July 2002, it came with OS9.2 and OS10.1.3. I've upgraded a few times since and currently have 10.3.9. I mainly work in OS9.2 due to most of my programs being used are only in 9 and the PC network I'm hooked up to likes it better. I boot up in 9.2 -- 80%of the time.
I'm not sure when the problem started in OSX since I'm not working there alot but I started to get the spinning ball in installer, software update and some preferences. So I reloaded (archive/install) from 10.3.5 upgrade disk but couldn't further upgrade to 10.3.9 due to that spinning ball-- still there even after I reloaded 10.3.5.
I've run Disk Utility from the 10.3.5 upgrade disk (repaired disk, repaired permissions) and then I again reloaded (archive install) 10.3.5 and then upgraded to 10.3.9 and this time it worked because I went immediately to the 10.3.9 to install.
BUT I still have the spinning balls in almost everything. Almost seems worse now. I can't even use Disk Utility from the utility folder on my mac without getting the spinning ball.
OS9.2 is fine and I would like to leave it that way.
But it's looking like I need to do a clean install--which means I'll have to reload OS9.2 -- correct?
My question is for a clean install do I need to go back to the original disks that came with my Mac (OS10.1.3) or can I do a clean install with the 10.3.5 upgrade disks. And if I do a clean install from 10.3.5 can I still install OS9.2?
Also what are those Software Restore disks for? They came with the original set of CDs, are they used in the clean install?
Thanks for any help you can give

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You really should start a new topic, as threadjacking is frowned upon in these Forums.
The spinning ball or the beachball effect is a result of the computer spinning its wheels, so to speak, as it does not have sufficient computing power to deal with the task at hand. This can be caused by many things.
I am almost certain that it has nothing to do with the latest Panther update. I did them all with no problem.
Is there a way to deal with it?
1. Sufficient RAM
2. Sufficient available HDD capacity.
3. Regular maintenance.
4. Repairing Disk Permisssions before and after any installations.
In terms of RAM you should aim to max out your RAM if you can. I don't have much information on your computer specs so I can't give any more specific information about that.
You should have 10 to 15 percent of your internal HDD as free space. This gives your computer room for virtual memory to be most efficient.
Here is an article on maintenace that has good advice and links to resources: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607640򔖘
In addition to repairing permissions, another simple procedure is to reset the PRAM. You should boot from your install disk and run Repair Disk from Disk Utility on the install disk. I run monthly diagnostics and repairs with Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior. In addition running regular CRON cleaning with a utility like MacJanitor, Cocktail, Macaroni or Onyx (all linked in the article above) keeps your machine running smoothly and minimizes the potential for major problems.
I think I have given you enough to chew on for now. Post back if you have further questions.
Good luck.

Yo Guys
I've had some kernel problems with my mid2010 MBP, problems booting, crashes etc. so decided to make a clean install of mavericks, first through the recovery partion, later at the genius bar (they coudnt help me and blamed my toshiba HD (not generic mac) allthough i strongly doubt its the HD since it has passed every test.
still i've no thirdparty apps installed, so when after the clean install i tried to install spotify, it hangs(keeps bouncing in dock), same goes for transmission. This happens the same before and after my clean install, but didnt two weeks ago...WEIRD!
What makes it all weirder is that the spotify install will run and install in safe boot, but it doesnt in normal mode.....
I can add a etrecheck but since its only a mevericks install you guys could guess the results, everything tests perfect......Its like i've MBP with a burnout, no doctor or app or diagnositc can find any flaw, geniusses arent so genius when behind my laptop, but it behaves very ill.....all&all its just super weird.
I hope some of you guys are able to read the code in consol, and maybe shine a light on whats wrong. I see some problem occuring the Kernel mach and libsystem_kernel.dylib) and (libsystem_pthread.dylib) still i've no idea how to fix or what it means...
this is the log of transmission, which usually just runs inside its app.

Clean install and still spotlight problems
I've been having several problems with my system, including problems with spotlight, and so I decided it was time for a clean install. After a clean install to 10.5.2 and then a combo update to 10.5.6, spotlight still is not working correctly. I opened my sys prefs and saw that right after a clean install, there were still settings in my "privacy" list for spotlight from my previous system. I'm assuming then this info is somehow stored locally on each drive? Does that sound right?
Spotlight starting indexing like normal, but it got to the point where it hangs on 7364159 hours remaining. This was the same issue I had before the clean install.
so, two questions.
1- How can I get spotlight to work? I've tried "spotless" and others and it never seems to work correctly.
2- I've got 4 internal drives, could it be that the drives are two large for indexing? Seems strange but at this point I can't figure out why indexing never finishes.
Stock 320gb
seagate 500gb
2x seagate 1.5 TB
I really would appreciate any suggestions. I've been really frustrated that spotlight hasn't worked since buying this new Mac Pro.I did as suggested and enabling them one by one allowed me to index my system drive but as soon as I started on the 2nd drive (seagate 1.5TB) it started doing the same kinds of things. It looks like it's working and then gets to the same point and the number starts to go up and the status doesn't move. I ran lsof | grep mdworkder in the terminal and I got this

After leaving it for a while, it doesn't seem to change at all. This is after it had started indexing the drive and then I restarted my computer. Once restarting, it has the spotlight window that says it is calculating the time and it doesn't do anything.
