Reboot Twice

Hi,
I have a strange problem on my T21 IBM laptop, I have installed Solaris 8 (07/01) on it. Whenever I reboot the system by using init 5,6, shutdown or poweroff commands it comes back and get stuck just after the boot window(the one we use to do single user mode). Just a blank
screen and I only can see is blinking curser and nothing happens. Then I need to do a hard reset or a power off to get it back. This only happens if I reboot not with fresh start. Same problem was there with my previous laptop, which was Asus and I gave it up as it had some problems with video setup.
Someone advised, saying that this appeared to be an ACPI problem. They suggested that me to try:
setprop acpi-user-options 0x2
in the DCA manager, then save the options and try gain.
Well I did that too but my problem is not solved yet.
Also I have tried ata-dma-enabled set to one, and reset to zero, didn't help at all.
Please if your guys have ever seen this kind of a problem, please drop me a suggestion. I have been stuck with this problem for a long time.
Thanks

Kum

Hi,
Thanks for the reply
Well, then, Let's ask technical support guys at Sun who are watching this forum. Tell you more about it, this is quite a known problem on Solaris 8 but only on certain Intel systems. This must have got something to do with some hardware I guess. But I never found remedy and this is lot embarrassing. May be they (SUN)did know but not found a solution yet. I heard that also FreeBSD had kind of a problem and they managed to fix it.
PLEASE TECH EXPERTS TELL SOMETHING
Regards
Kum

  • MBP recovery mode - why reboot twice?

Hello, I have a 2012 MBP which came with MacOS 10.8.2 which I upgraded to 10.8.3.
I decided today to do a clean re-install of the OS.
I was not watching the Mac during recovery (since it takes so long to do!) but I heard it reboot automatically after 2 hours or so. Then I heard it reboot a SECOND time.
At that point I looked at the Mac and it was asking the usual setup questions (time zone, username, etc).
Why did the Mac automatically reboot twice? I kinda wish I had been paying more attention to it. Did it automatically install 10.8.2 in recovery mode, automatically reboot, then automatically install the 10.8.3 update and automatically reboot again? (Current OS is now 10.8.3 and everything works fine, btw!)
    Thanks, Chris.

    I found the answer:
    1) The Mac downloads the OS, then auto-reboots.
    2) The Mac then installs the OS, and auto-reboots a second time.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

Same here. I never had issues with the old software, and no issues with the new software either. I may have had one reboot since I got the new version about a month ago, but that's all.
So the question to ask is, why is there a slice of customers getting so many problems, and so many other customers that are problem-free? Could it be a defective batch of boxes and whoever happens to get one from that batch gets these problems?

    no error messages in dmesg.
You cannot presume there isn't a hardware fault just because a CPU module has resumed its operation after a panic.
CPU's do not become disabled.    They are too fundamentally critical to a system and will always try to run when you boot a system.
I have to contact oracle for this?
Yes,.   If your system is a Oracle/Sun branded system, then you use your service contract credentials and log a Support Request.   They will likely have you run Explorer and they will analyze the information saved in the Explorer output file.
If your system is from some other hardware company (IBM or HP for example) you contact them instead.

Have you tried closing the app completely and seeing whether it works properly when you re-open it ? From the home screen (i.e. not with the scrabble apps 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Vertical lines after sleep, must reboot twice

When waking my iMac G4 (512 MB RAM, 1GHz, 10.3.9) from approximately 5 hours of sleep, I was greeted with not only a frozen screen, but one with thin vertical rainbow pinstripes and one thicker black horizontal line. Key strokes were unable to resolve the problem, and I was eventually forced to cut the power, wait a few moments, and restart.
Restarting was unsuccessful, and I got to a grey screen with barely noticeable grey vertical pinstripes, and was unable to proceed. Once again, I cut the power, restarted, and this time everything seemed fine. I checked permissions, and all seemed to be fine.
I booted from the TechTools CD, set the tests to run, and went to bed.
This morning, I checked the iMac, and found that it was asleep. When I tried to wake it up, I got another screen with the rainbow lines. The hard-drive did spin to indicate that it had woken up, but I couldn't get rid of the lines, and ended up having to cut the power once again.
I tried to reboot, and didn't get the standard chime, but instead a longer higher pitched tone and a blank screen (dark grey or black, it was hard to tell). The hard-drive was spinning, but once again I was stuck.
I was forced to cut power and reboot yet again, and this time the process went fine. I have now set the machine to not sleep (computer and display) and for the moment, things are okay.
I am now convinced that there is a problem, I'm just not sure what it is. Any and all suggestions are very much appreciated.

    Hi Samantha,
    Welcome to the discussions.
You need to differentiate whether this is a software issue or a hardware issue. One way to do this is to boot up using a different operating system (such as the one on your OS X installation disc). If the phenomenon disappears when you do this, then some setting within your normal OS is corrupted - that fastest fix for this is an "Archive and Install".
If it still persists, then you may have a hardware issue (most likely your graphics card). This is not good, as in an iMac, the graphics card is intergral with the motherboard - to replace the card, you need to replace the motherboard.
Let us know how you go, please.
    Cheers!
    Karl

  • I just received a Security Update from Apple for OS 10.6.8 and have experienced a severely slow reboot, taking 15-20 minutes. Applications take forever to load. Have rebooted twice... very slowly. What's up with this latest update?

When I clicked on the recent Apple Security Software Update, it took 15-20 minutes to install, and another 15 minutes or more to restart. Then everything was amazingly slow, as if nothing was happening... spinning gears, spinning color wheels. The background universe image took forever to load. Desktop took a long time to load. Then Mail and Safari took a long time to load. What has happened? Was this update legit? I'm thinking it was the legitimate listed 7-2-2013 update for 10.6.8, but in my 15 years of Apple loyalty, I've never experienced an update that bogged my system down like this.

Not enough free space on the startup disk can cause the issues you are referring to.
Control click the MacintoshHD icon on your desktop then click Get Info.
    You'll see:  Capacity & Available
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
If it's not a disk space issue, verify the disk for errors.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If Disk Utility reports problems, you will need to insert your install disc to make repairs.
And if you have not done so lately, backup all your important data just in case.

    Hi,
Do you have a folder on your hard disk called j2sdk-1_4_0. You can usually find it under C:\j2sdk-1_4_0.
If not then double click on the j2sdk-1_4_0-win.exe file to install the jsdk.
This JSDK should work with win 98.
Can't remember how to set variables on win 98 machines.

Anyone with more clue and ideas then me, it's getting really annoying, it also kill whole KDE plasma-desktop for couple of minutes before plasmoids find out network is really down and I'm not really fan of morning "gamble". I can't pinpoint some hard date/update when this started to happening because like I said it's random but last couple of months should be quite accurate. Thanks in advance.
    EDIT: dmesg when network works:
    tilen@pikmin ~]$ dmesg | grep e100
pci 0000:03:07.0: Firmware left e100 interrupts enabled; disabling

I don't have anything special set at router but I doubt rc.conf play any role. I will try to set it up with dhcp (but I think I have tried that already) if there is any change.
This morning I had to reboot twice, so new kernel didn't help. Fowler, what network card are you using, also e100 (well or some intel)? I dunno, should this be handed to the kernel team? If it will piss me enough one morning I'll just go and buy a new network card, just wanna be sure that will really solve the problem.
UPDATE: OK, this is just silly. I remebered I have acctualy onboard LAN so I edited rc.conf and dived into the dust under my desk to move cable and there I found out it was acctual onboard in use all the time Now this dosen't make much sense to me anymore, when I can't get net up all the stuff in dmesg is e100 related. Anyway, I connected network to e100 and rebooted, suprise, same story. Dmesg reported again link was not ready. I edited rc.conf to
    INTERFACES=(eth0 !eth1)
in case this has anything to do with proper timing at assigning whatever needs to be assigned to network cards at boot so I'm sure just 1 card with all info provided get's kicked in at boot. First reboot after that works, it dosen't prove anything yet but at leat it's some kind of progress in recognising proper cause.
UPDATE 2: Nah, still happens. Googling for "no link during initialization" show a lot of familiar problems, almost all on nforce motherboards and mine is nforce too. I just don't get it why this mess seperate PCI network card. In any case it's extremely annoying.

  • My iPhone 6+ keeps rebooting after installing iOS 8.3

I have a 128Gb iPhone 6+. When I downloaded and installed iOS 8.3 via WIFI, it went through the usual download sequence and then started continually rebooting. After about 20 or so reboots, I got a white screen with a carrier signal on the top left, a location icon and a grayed-out bluetooth icon and the battery level indicator on the top right, and a curious "information" icon (a letter "i" in a circle) at the bottom right of the screen.
I tried tapping on the "i" but got no response. Then the iPhone went into the reboot cycle again. After several reboot cycles, I got the same white screen again. Then the iPhone again started rebooting and hasn't stopped.
My iPhone 6+ has been problematic since I installed iOS 8.1.2. Several random reboots (about 4 cycles, before the iPhone returned to "normal") and some other issues that I didn't document.
I brought the iPhone to the nearest authorized Apple repair center. They said that they could not find any problem and neither could they duplicate the issue I experienced. They recommended that the next time reboots happened that I should make a video of the error. Also, they recommended that I keep all of the apps updated (which I conscientiously do). So I decided to make a log of all the errors since the iPhone was returned to me.
Here are the entries to my log:
    iPhone 6+ Errors since March 30, 2015

I have done all of the above & phone is still unstable & crashes apps all the time. Right now as we speak whats app wont work.
Waited to long now...Apple are doing nothing to help anyone anymore. Company is going down the drain fast.
