Reboot with OS disk
My iMac 20" (Intel) will not boot up. I want to boot using the OS disk but I have a question. The original operating system disk was OS 10.4.x. I later upgraded to 10.6. Which operating system disk do I use to boot the system?
No. If the shutdown damaged anything the damage is done.
After running AHT a couple of time at least, it may not show errors the first time. If your Mac comes back good I would suggest that you use Disk Utility and repair your hard drive.
It is possible the improper shutdown might have damaged the directory structure on your disk. A corrupt directory could prevent your Mac from being able to find the system file it needs to boot.

forgot my adminpassword, i have tried the reboot with initial disk didn't work, i am able to get into my computer with name and password, but this same name and password doesn't work as an administrators password when i want to download or change things.
do you have any suggestions? Im about to give up, i can't even access wireless have to use a dsl
pretty sad... this same name and password doesn't work as an administrators password when i want to download or change things.
It's probably that your Keychain password is not the same as your login password. If you configured your computer to log you in automatically, you may not have used your login password in so long you forgot it.
There is no way to retrieve the "login" Keychain password, but you can reset the Keychain from the Preferences menu: select it in the Keychain Access menu and select "Reset My Default Keychain". This will create a new, empty Keychain but the old one will be saved should you ever remember its password.
The result of this is that you will have to supply passwords for everything that requires it, since without your Keychain they will no longer automatically fill themselves. However, once you supply them and store them in your new Keychain, they will be remembered. -
I recently purchased a used 2010 macbook pro. I would like to reset it to factory settings but it did not come with a disk. How do I go about making this computer my own?
Contact Apple Customer Service and order replacement disks. Have the MBP serial number ready and there is a charge.

[SOLVED] Long time with excessive disk access before system reboot.
I feel I would be grateful for some help here. It's my first go at Arch Linux having used Xubuntu for several years. It may be I'm missing something obvious but then I would be happy if someone could point me in the right direction.

[ 1654.867177] Restarting system.
However, after the last line is printed, the system does not reboot immediately but hangs for about 2 minutes with heavy disk activity. I can't say if it is read or write or both, but the led of my HDD is lit constantly. When this activity stops, the machine reboots.
$ systemctl poweroff
works as expected, i.e. shuts down immediately without excessive disk access.
I see this behaviour both with the installed Arch system and when I run the live installation/recovery CD. It is also the same if I boot into the busybox rescue shell and then restarts the machine from there. It also does not seem to matter if any partition on the disk is is mounted or not, the behaviour is always the same with 2 min. heavy activity before reboot.
System setup:
Sony Vaio VPZ13. Intel Core i5 M460, 4GB ram, 2x64GB SSD in RAID0 configuration via bios setting (a.k.a. fake raid), partitioned like:
windows boot
windows system
linux swap
linux "/"
linux "/home"
So it's a dual boot setup with Windows 7.
The raid array is assembled by mdadm, and I have mdadm_udev among my mkinitcpio.conf hooks (after blocks but before filesystems).

-- Reboot --
Since I have used Xubuntu without hassle for several years, I first thought the problem may be related to systemd reboot and something in my system setup. But I have tried the Fedora 17 live CD and rebooting there works as expected. So, since it works in one systemd distro, it should work with Arch as well.
Then I thought that it maybe had something to do with the raid-array, something along the lines of
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=752593
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=879327
But then I found the shutdown hook for mkinitcpio and now I see that the array is stopped and dissassembled. So thats not the problem either. (Or thats what I guess at least.)
Unfortunately I'm out of ideas. Any help would be grateful.
Last edited by wingbrant (2013-02-02 22:20:20)It turned out that the magic word for me was "reboot=pci" on the kernel command line. With that option set it works lika a charm The machine reboots nice and clean.

Not used my G5 Powermac (late 2004) for about 2 years. Was going to set it up for the lads to do school work.
However it only boots in with Installation disk, but colour dots on white screen and message comes up to reboot machine. However nothing happens apart from me keep trying. Also the numerous fans get louder and louder and louder.....
Any ideas folksCan you please provide details on the exact model?
For a start, the PRAM battery is likely dead. PRAM tells the computer which drive to start with, other basic information. Still, you can usually get the computer to start, though bad PRAM is unpredictable and could be stopping that.
Some computer models use software to control cooling fans. If there's no software commands they automatically go into high speed to prevent overheating. Your software obviously isn't loading, so runaway fans. -
Why does Lion immediately reboot with FileVault Enabled?
I have two laptops, both with Lion installed and both are updated to the latest patches.
Here's the process I go through:
Shutdown the laptop
Do something else (take a nap, eat a sandwich, whatever)
Boot laptop
Log in
Here I get the little grey pinwheel for a while (30+ seconds, far longer that I'd expect with either a brand new Air or a 2010 MBP 15")
Experience an immediate reboot.
Profit
After that mysterious reboot, everything is fine. I went through my profile and removed every startup item and stripped everything out of my LaunchAgents folder. The problem still persisted. On a lark, I disabled FileVault. After FileVault was disabled and I rebooted, everything worked fine. I was able to shutdown my computer without fear of a double reboot.
I re-enabled FileVault to test out my assumption and, sure enough, the problem was back.
Is there something that could be causing this that I'm not aware of and my Mac is behaving oddly because of weird things I've done? I've included my logs (apologies for the length of the post).

I've called AppleCare repeatedly for a solutiuon, but I haven't gotten an answer yet and like you above I removed just about anything I could think of. I'd like to start considering third party apps we might have installed that maybe to blame.
Why? Because I installed a fresh copy of Lion onto a Class 10 SD card and then later I turned on full disk encryption there. I no longer experienced the problem after I booted from that card.
I also experienced a problem with full disk encryption with my 2010 MacBook Air sitting doing nothing at the encryption login screen. It spontaneously restarted three times before I turned it off. Later I moved to a 2011 model and did not see the spontaneously restarts again.
Now I'm stuck with this annoying double login. -
Problem with SSD disk in MacBook Pro
I have a very weird problem with my SSD drive 128 GB in a MacBook Pro (early 2011). The warranty has already expired, I don't have Apple Care.
I had Mac OS Lion installed, and once when I opened the lid as usual to wake the system up, the system appeared to be frozen. I had to shut it down, and when swithched on again, the system didn't load - it was showing the apple and loading circle all the time.
I've tried a lot of things:
1) First I checked the disk loading from the CDs that came with the laptop. Disk verification didn't run for the first time (image), for the second time it showed an error (image)
2) I went to Apple store, where they made a quick hardware check, which showed everything was OK, supposed that it was a software problem a offered me to reinstall the OS. And failed to do that.
3) I took out the hard drive and connected it via USB adapter. I could see and read the contents of the disk.
4) I COULD LOAD the OS and work from the disk, connected by USB
4) I tried to reinstall the OS myself (with the disk connected by SATA), and it was always freezing when searching for available disks.
5) I installed the OS on this drive, connected by USB - all went smoothly, it installed and was working, while when connected through SATA it didn't load.
6) Finally, I swapped my SSD with freshly installed OS with a usual HDD from another mac. BOTH WORK: my SSD in another Mac, and HDD in mine.
So, I've come to a conclusion that the problem is not in the disk itself, and not in my laptop's SATA interface, but in communication with SSD through SATA, probably some controller on the mainboard.
Question: Can anybody suggest anything on how I can confirm or disprove that? Or any thoughts about whether it can be fixable or not?
Thanks.Exactly the same happened to me. Yesterday morning I opened the lid of my MBP8,1 (late 2011) on a meeting with a client and It just did not wake up :-/ After forced reboot it would never boot stuck on the same place.
Now what is happening any HDD will be recognized and booted aswell 10/10 attempts but SSD will not boot eventhough I reinstalled it all. The SSD WILL boot in other MBP and is visible on other systems.
The SSD WILL BOOT via USB.
I do not believe the disk is the problem.
My MB was replaced just few months ago. My SATA cable was replaced some time before the MB.

I am unable to Install windows xp with recovery disks.
I have a Toshiba’s Satellite Pro S300-10J laptop Model#PSSB0E-02H00FDU. Some days back its operating system got corrupted. I have its recovery disks(windows Xp) and now I am trying to reinstall the windows by using recovery disks but unable to do so. Actually when I insert disk 1 it start installation process and then prompt for 2nd disk and when I insert 2nd disk it starts unpacking software image process. At the end it shows a pop up box with the following information.
Info:
Done(Files:28339/28339 Folders: 2558/2558).
Please remove the recovery medium!
|OK|
As I remove the 2nd disk and press ok and then exit it goes shut down instead of rebooting. When I press power button to on it then it goes stuck on windows startup with a message of please wait .
Please support that how can I get rid of this situation and can restore operating system with recovery disk.I made another attempt but nothing goes productive.
One thing is clear that the recovery disks are ok because a few months back I used same disks to refresh my notebook and did it without any error.
There might be a chance of bios setting because in my absence my sister and her friend tried to install windows and I doubt her friend made some changes in bios but she says that she didn’t made any change except boot priority and during installation got the error.
I have already rest the bios setting to default and in SATA CONTROLLER MODE I changed it from AHCI into IDE.
With recovery disks of XP Installation starts and after image loading it doesn’t restart just goes shut down and upon restarting just stop responding/hang up on startup.
I tried with another CD of XP and during installation when system restarts setup continues on ‘INSTALLING WINDOWS’ with the message that ‘Setup will complete in approximately 35 minutes ‘Installing devices’ and at this stage it hanged up. Finally it shows blue screen with an error like

On several attempts the result remains same.

Verify permissions failed: Framework unable to communicate with the Disk Management daemon
I'm experiencing problems with the Disk Management daemon on my MBPro Retina running Mountain Lion 10.8.2. I discovered it first when I tried to enable file vault and received the "Framework unable to communicate with the Disk Management daemon" error message.
So I started up Disk Utilities (which started fine) and tried to run Verify Disk Permissions. It failed with the following errror message:
"Verify permissions failed: Framework unable to communicate with the Disk Management daemon"
So I booted in to safe mode and tried Verify Disk Permissions again with the same results.
So I booted in to the recovery partition to run Disk Utilities. It ran fine and the Verify Disk Permissions found some errors which I then fixed.
I re-booted normally but am still experiencing the same behavior.
I have turned off my anti-virus (Sophos) to no effect.
I checked the console and found the following message:
12/6/12 3:27:02.828 PM Disk Utility[157]: *** WARNING: Method userSpaceScaleFactor in class NSWindow is deprecated on 10.7 and later. It should not be used in new applications. Use convertRectToBacking: instead.
Thoughts or suggestions? Thanks! Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
What is the correct fsck syntax for issue with invisible disk ?
Hello everybody,
My problem actually (I also have a problem with the 17" Install DVD) is to repair *3 disks* with *fsck command*, as the filesystems are damaged. I phoned Apple Assistance Saturday, for about 30 minutes, but finally the Advisor sent me a link to one of their thousands (and sometimes obsolete) articles, and the solution wasn't there entirely.
I'll describe you the problem :
One of my USB external disks (4TB data) *doesn't appear* after Startup, but when I use the Install DVD and Disk Utility, the application tells me it's OK, that the disk "SEEMS" to be alright etc. That's false.
When I reboot with *Cmd + S* (root level), and tell Terminal (I have been obliged to print the four states of an American Extended keyboard) :
"sudo fsck -fy /dev/disk4s1"
the reply is :
"BAD SUPER BLOCK: MAGIC NUMBER WRONG
LOOK FOR ALTERNATE SUPERBLOCKS? yes
SEARCH FOR ALTERNATE SUPER-BLOCK FAILED. YOU MUST USE THE
-b OPTION TO FSCK TO SPECIFY THE LOCATION OF AN ALTERNATE
SUPER-BLOCK TO SUPPLY NEEDED INFORMATION; SEE fsck(8)."
So, I use the *-b option* of *fsck command*, and :
"fsck: -b flag *requires a number*"
"-b size Specify the size, in bytes, of the physical blocks used by
the -B option."
So, I'm searching *since 3 days* (and *I'm learning a lot*, but nothing, of course, concerning my problem) the full info command to know *what sector address* I have to tell to -b to install an alternate superblock, because I need to know exactly at which places filesystems and *data start* and end.
You understand, I suppose, that I can't use any of my softwares, because the disk is INVISIBLE (doesn't exist) after normal restarting.
It's not MOUNTED nor UNMOUNTED.
It exists (very well, thank you) when rebooting *with Apple Install DVD*.
I'm under *Snow Leopard 10.6.5*, and I don't know if, perhaps,
*there wouldn't be a problem* (or more) with this update ...
That's what I've seen, in any case, on other places here,
about several different issues.
Please, Bob, Gary, Camelot, etresoft, Bill, Jun, Nils, Cole, Charles, Michael,
gimme some help !
If someone has the full solution, a beginning of solution,
or a path to solution,
thank you very, very much in advance !
With my best regards
VialatteDear Camelot,
First, thank you very much for answering me and try to help me ;
Secundo, please read, if you have time, what I replied to Bill Scott,
and I have to thank you also for your slightly better contribution and understanding.
Some words of what I've replied to him are written for you too :
"I type *sudo fsck -fy /dev/disk4s2* (not s1, of course, and *Camelot is perfectly right*, having remarked this mistake, as *s1 is dedicated to partition map* volumes).
There's also *a strange thing* with Disk Utility when starting from DVD :
it doesn't display the s1 volumes as usual."
As you've read it in my reply to Bill, it's a *complicated issue* and *Apple has no response*.
You tell me : "+Good luck with that.+" It starts badly.
"+It's been a long time since I've had to deal with superblocks+"
I totally ignored their existence …
"+- they just don't come up any more,+" What is the meaning of this sentence ?
"+but I don't know any way of recovering the superblock address after a disk has failed.+" That's the matter of my question : *Is it a failure ?*
"+Typically (at least, historically) you get the superblock addresses in advance, storing them somewhere safe until you need them.+"
That's a total discovery for me.
You tell me then : "+Are you talking about in the Finder here?+" Yes and no, I talk about the Sidebar (see below), but it's part of the Finder.
"+Have you checked the Finder's preferences to make sure it's just not hiding external drives?+" I did, when you told me to do so.
"+Since everything else tells you that the drive is OK+" Yes, you're right, when starting from Install DVD, that's *very strange*, but remember fsck doesn't say *the same at all* as Disk Utility ... "+this just sounds like a Finder preference setting to me.+"
I'm sorry, it would have been wonderful. My settings are correct, that means :
NOTHING on Desktop, ALL (including Computer) in the Sidebar (and clicking on Computer allows me to check that *no volume* has vanished from Sidebar (it happens sometimes).
"+If it's not the Finder prefs, then please post the output of diskutil list in order to troubleshoot further.+"
Here it is (a little far below), but there's *none of the 2 4TB volumes* (yes, there are two disks missing now) here, because, as I already said that, they are invisible for the Finder and *Disk Utility*, and I think *it's the same for Terminal.*
You'll note there's *no BOOTCAMP partition* here (I removed it temporarly to solve this issue), and don't be afraid if there are several systems on the internal HD.
As I noticed it here and there, there are problems with 10.6.5.
So, I try to work with 10.6.4 (delivered with MBP 17"), but have also an universal 10.6.0 Snow Leopard, with which I can configurate 10.6 *at any state*.
Unfortunately, I *can't use* (it so that Apple decided to do) the DVD delivered with my 15" MBP (rejected by 17"), because it is with my MBP 15" that I formatted those disks.
*Another thing :* If I didn't want my wife *to install herself* (with me to help her) the 15" MBP I've gave to her (there's the 17" new 500GB 5400rpm installed in it by me), I would already have tried to connect these two 4TB, just to see.

As you and I see, I strongly believe that disk15s2 and disk16s2 (with s3, s4, s5 etc. partitions) are missing.
I must find a way to prove what I say to you. Remember that we are not in the case where I use *Cmd + s* after rebooting with Install DVD, but under normal utilisation. What follows has no interest :
Last login: Fri Nov 26 21:23:55 on ttys006
sys171064:~ OH$ sudo fsck -fy /dev/disk15s2
Password:

So, I will now restart my MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.4 Install DVD, and go :
—1 in *Disk Utility* ;
—2 in Terminal (with *Cmd + s*).
I'll *note all* what I see, and then write you what I found.
You'll be nice to tell me if there's a way, in these conditions,
a) to *save Disk Utility log* ; or/and
b) to *save Terminal Output(s)* (.txt) ; or/and
c) to *take and save screenshots*, ; or/and
d) to *print anything*. (?)
as I don't know how it's possible to save these informations.
Thank you once more for your help. I'll do things now, but as it is 23:02 here in France, maybe I won't write you till tomorrow.
But, if you can answer to a), b), c) or d) above, post it to me please, because I'll go back here tonight.
And, also, *but I don't want to bore you*, I'd like to learn how to *copy and paste parts of messages* as you did, and how to *insert a Grab item (.png)* in a discussion, because an image is better than thousand words (that's what we say in France, but I'm sure we are not alone on Earth — like in the Universe).
With my best regards

Install maverik on my MacBook Pro, I had no problem. Two days later I was shut down suddenly and reboot with a closed padlock and asking me for a password that does not match any of mine. What can I do?
Try booting to the Recovery drive, running Disk Utility and Repair disk and Repair Permissions.
1. Reboot and immediately hold down command and R (two keys).
2. When you see the screen shown on this page, select Disk Utility and continue.
3. When DU is running, select the hard drove on the left, First Aid and Repair Disk.
4. After Repair Disk, click Repair Permissions.
Quit DU and restart. -
"This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."
Stick the disk in, reboot holding c.
Disk Utility is a menu option about the 2 or 3rd screen in the installer. (don't install OS X!)
Because your booted form the installer disk, you can repair the disk.
Quit and exit the installer and reboot.
If your drive is not repaired, make a note of all what it says, for Apple to use.
Reboot and get your files off to a external drive,
Take the note and your comptuer to Apple for a warranty/Apple care call, they will replace the drive. -
Trouble with LaCie disk and time machine
HI everyone,
I've been having trouble with using time machine to back-up to my 1 TB LaCie drive (purchased 5/12, unfornuately I was dumb and didn't register the drive and no longer have the box with the serial number and there is no serial number on my drive. The only problem I had up until the end of August was that every so often the LaCie drive (using my FW 800 port) would unmount after waking up from sleep.
The end of August the drive unmounted for no reason while I was on the computer doing a task. Could not get the LaCie drive remounted (rebooting, etc. etc.) To make a long story short, ended up calling apple care who took me through resetting my SMC and PRAM to no avail. Was booted to higher level of support who walked me through trying to repair my drive using the disk utiltiy. When that didn't work, she walked me through erasing and reformatting the LaCie drive and starting a new time machine back-up. Every thing ok until about ten days ago.
Last week, when I woke my iMac up from sleep, I got an error saying that the disk was not ejected properly and I could not mount the drive. Restarting did nothing, the disk did not mount. Shutting down and rebooting seemed to solve the problem and the disk was mounted. Every so often I've had the problem with the disk unmounting after waking up from sleep before. So, I changed my energy sleep preferences. At the end of the day when I am done, I'd unmount the LaCie drive before putting the Mac to sleep using the apple menu.
Today I came in to start my day, plugged the drive in and it would not mount. Tried rebooting nothing. Went into the disk utility, at first the LaCie drive passed the disk verify (6:26:25 and 6:26:38). Then I went into repair disk on the indented drive at 6:27:13, I wasn't sure what it is was doing, thinking that it had hung, I stopped the repair at 6:27:24. Exited disk utility, and the LaCie drive mounted. But I was getting a read only error when I tried to back-up using time machine. So, I went back into disk utility at 6:27:35, when I verified the disk (indented disk), I got an error saying the disk need to be repaired. After several minutes the disk could not be repaired. So, I erased and reformatted the drive. Ran a time machine back-up and it seemed to back-up everything on my hard drive. Just ran another verify disk and it passed.
Is the drive failing? Have some other back-ups of my documents, my address book, iCal and am going to make a backup of some of my pref files and important e-mail files and am going to do some more back-ups after I am done.
Have reached out to the women at apple care whom I talked to last August, but don't expect to hear back from her for at least 24 hours.
Here is my disk utility log

2013-11-07 10:39:32 -0500:I just got a call back from the upper level support person at apple care who had been advising me on my trouble with time machine and my LaCie 1 TB FWD. I had sent her much of the same verbiage as I posted here. As some of you have probably figured out, the verdict is that the drive is probably failing. She says this because I have had to do two erase and reformats. She thought that the intermitant problem that I have had with the drive unmounting when my iMac wakes from sleep could be related to the drive failing.
In the meantime I have a secondary back-up (not using time machine) and the LaCie 1 TB FWD is working for the moment.
Thanks to all who read all my verbiage.
And in the meantime, I've learned something. I marked this question as solved. But I'm open to other things to try.

I have some B200M3's with local disk. I would like to configure them to boot from san. I've setup a service profile template with a boot policy to boot from CD first and then the SAN. I have a local disk configuration policy to mirror the local disks. I've zoned the machines so that it presently only sees one path to the storage because I'm installing windows and I don't want it to see the disks funky because of multiple paths to the same disk. When I boot the machine it sees the disk. I boot to the Windows 2012R2 iso and load the drivers for the cisco mlom and then the single lun will appear. The local disk will also appear. It can't install Windows 2012R2 on the SAN disk only the local disk. It sees the local disk as disk 0 and the san disk as disk 3. I don't know how to get the machine to see the san disk as disk 0. I have the lun (which resides on an vnx5600) as lun 0. The boot policy is configured to have the san lun as lun 0. It even appears while booting the san lun appears as lun 0. The error I'm getting from the windows installer is: We couldn't install Windows in the location you chose. Please check your media drive. Here's more info about what happened: 0x80300001. Any suggestions to get this to boot from SAN.
Hi
during the boot up process, do you see the wwpn of the target showing that the VIC can talk to the storage?
Reboot the server in question, when you see the option to get into bios press F2, ssh to the primary fabrics a run the following commands
connect adapter (x/x/x). <--- (chassis #/slot #/adapter#)
connect
attach-fls
lunlist
(provide output of last command)
