Rebranded from POSReady 2009 to Windows XP Embedded after updates

We are currently building a Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 image for a number of touch based terminals.
I started off by installing the base OS POSReady 2009 (non-evaluation version) and ran the windows update. After about 142 updates later my OS is now rebranded to Windows XP Embedded(System Properties, Login screens, etc...). I was able to narrow down the
problematic update to
KB975713
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/MS10-007
due to the severity of the update and our terminals having a network connection we can not exclude the update from the build. I also checked the underlying OS using the method advised here
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/cd3a07e5-87c0-429e-ac81-4223dbb5e91b/xpe-vs-wepos?forum=posready
both pre and post updates are the same (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\POSReady = 1). Would it
be safe to assume the rebranding was skin deep?
This caused issue with our users as they are questioning our choice of OS due to Windows XP Embedded having a shorter end of life support vs Embedded POSReady 2009.
http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search/default.aspx?sort=PN&alpha=embedded&Filter=FilterNO
We have thought about changing the images inside the dlls but decided it will violate the EULA. Is this correct?
The question is how would we go about changing the brand of the OS back to POSReady 2009 without violating the EULA?

Yes, for example that there is already IE7 included out-of-the-box instead of IE6, etc. (newer software versions), that there is 'fbreseal -keepall' optionally available instead of SysPrep and unattended setup is completely different. Additionally POSReady2009
comes with some interesting EEFs: FBWF for instance.

  • Windows XP Embedded Secuirty Updates

I apologize if this is in the wrong place but I was unable to find a Windows XP Embedded category.
I believe support for Windows XP Professional regarding security updates will end this year April 2014.  Support for Windows XP Embedded lasts beyond that time.  My question is does this mean that Microsoft will continue to release security patches
for Windows XP Embedded? If so then how will one obtain these patches? If Microsoft will not release security fixes / patches for Windows XP Embedded after the Windows XP Professional support ends what does the extended "support" of Windows XP Embedded
    mean exactly?
This must have been answered somewhere, but I have been unable to find a definitive answer anywhere.

    Cor,
Thanks I'll try to find some answers there.
Barry Wang, can you also suggest an appropriate forum where I can post and receive an answer to my question?
    Thanks.

I cannot import my photos to my Windows xp PC after updating my iphone 5 with the latest iOS 7.1

According to the iTunes download page, it still supports Windows XP.
    Windows System Requirements
PC with a 1GHz Intel or AMD processor and 512MB of RAM
Windows XP Service Pack 3 or later, 32-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
64-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 require the iTunes 64-bit installer
    400MB of available disk space
Broadband Internet connection to use the iTunes Store
    (Emphasis added)
If your XP computer was updated, then it should work. Again, the links I posted earlier contain the current USB drivers for the iPhone and Windows.

    Hi M0M1!
I have an article for you that seems to describe your issue and can provide some helpful troubleshooting steps for this issue:
iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1717
Specifically, you will want to focus on this section of the article:
    User-specific troubleshooting
If you experience the issue in one particular user account, the suggestions below may resolve the issue. Before proceeding, you'll need to make hidden files and folder visible in Windows using steps 1-5.
Remove iTunes Preference files. Some of the files that iTunes stores settings and preferences in may be unusable. iTunes saves its preferences in two folders. Move one of them to the desktop and test to see if the issue persists. If it does, move it back and remove the second folder. The locations for the preference folders are:
    c:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes
    c:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes
    Create a new iTunes Library.
Hold the Shift key while opening iTunes. You'll be asked to choose an iTunes library.
    Choose Create Library.
In the following window, select a location to save the new iTunes Library.
Click Save. iTunes will open the new library. After you close iTunes, you can always select the original library by holding the Shift key while opening iTunes.
Recreate your iTunes Library. If your iTunes library has become unusable, rebuilding it may resolve the issue.
Check for issues with content files. Sometimes an audio file can cause iTunes to quit unexpectedly or stop responding when it's analyzing gapless playback information. To determine which file may be causing the issue, follow the steps below:
    Quit iTunes.
    Navigate to the iTunes folder:
    Windows Vista: c:\users\username\Music\iTunes
    Windows 7 and Windows 8: c:\users\username\My Music\iTunes
Move the iTunes Library.itl file to your desktop.
Open iTunes. You shouldn't see any content in iTunes.
Choose File > Add Folder to Library.
Navigate to the folder where your music is located:
    Windows Vista: c:\users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media
    Windows 7 and Windows 8: c:\users\username\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media
Choose an artist, album, or song to add to the library.
Wait for iTunes to successfully add the item to your library and perform the gapless playback scan.
If successful, continue adding songs to your library.
If there is an issue with one of your files, you'll notice your issue reappear after you add it to the library. You should repeat these steps, being careful not to add the files that caused the issue.
Thanks for being a part of the Apple Support Communities!
    Cheers,

  • I have a Lexmark Prevail Pro 705 printer connected to my network wirelessly. I can no longer scan from it using Image Capture. I can print to it. I can scan from it using a Windows machine. Most updated firmware. Driver v 11.0 Any ideas?

I have a Lexmark Prevail Pro 705. Latest (as of july 30, 2012) firmware. Mac driver v 11.0
I can no longer communicate wirelessly with the scan feature of the printer. I can print no problem using a wireless connection. Using a window's machine I can scan wirelessly from the printer. It seems that my iMac (OSX 10.8, 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 24inch early 2009) is not connecting to it. I can put a USB cord into the computer and scan.
Any ideas? This came up starting 2 weeks ago. I had hoped the operating system upgrade would solve it. It has not. I see nothing on the Lexmark boards about this. Since the printer works fine in both print an scan mode using a windows machine and can print fine from a Mac but not scan I don't have any ideas but I suspect it is the Mac.

  • Satellite C875 : Windows reverting changes after update to Windows 8.1

For days now with no success, I have been trying to update from Windows 8 (64 bits) to Windows 8.1 a Satellite C875-153 (PSCBCE-03H002FR)
I am opening a new thread as none of the available threads on this forum have helped me nor my researched on the web.
*1st error* - which I was able to "sort of" figure out is:
    -> *Windows 8.1 update fails with error message 0xC1900101 - 0x30018*
I have followed every steps, in the proper order, of this Toshiba guide, but it didn't help fixing the error:
    http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-upgrade-stepbystep/
I then followed recommendation from this thread and was "temporaly" able to update OS to Win 8.1:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=296594
The step that worked for me was to remove network cable while installing windows 8.1 as suggested by user "RandyRoberts".
    *2nd error:*
*-> Windows 8.1 hangs and system tried to revert changes back to Windows 8*
By unplugging the network cable, I was able to complete the update of Windows 8.1 and run it temporaly.
As soon as I replug the network cable and reconnect to the web, the computer hangs and restarts.
I suppose Windows 8.1 is trying to check the licence status and then refuse to activate it.
Windows ends up trying to revert changes and go back to Windows 8.
It hangs at restart and refuses to reload previous OS (Windows 8), leaving me on a screen with couple options. At this point I can only recover the factory image to be able to restart the system.
These steps have been performed on a freshly reinstalled OS with no additionnal softwares.
All updates and steps have been followed and recheck several times. I am runnning last BIOS available.
I have already saved all my data and burned the recovery disks .
Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.

    Hi GROM
I guess you found and read also this thread:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=74631
the user harrie_1 were able to update to the Win 8.1 and the update procedure went smoothly.
I dont know exactly why this workaround did not function in your case but I would recommend you to start the procedure once again and follow the update as described by harrie_1 user

For the last three versions 30.0, 31.0, and 32.0 Firefox will not work after updating on my Windows 8.1 laptop. I have tried resetting Firefox to default state, uninstalling and reinstalling, and resetting my TCP/IP stack (which usually fixes the problem). I also have gone to Internet Options in IE 11 and unchecked the automatically detect settings under the LAN connection options and then rechecked it without success. I also have Chrome installed on my machine as a check to see if it lies within the browser or my internet connection.

  • How to create recovery disk for windows 8.1 after update from windows 8.

My laptop came with windows 8 and i have recovery discs for windows 8.
Now i've updated to windows 8.1, so i want to creat recovery discs for windows 8.1.
So in future when i use recovery discs i dont have to download windows 8.1 again.
Please tell me if there is any way to do this.....

As colakid posted, in Windows 8 the ability to create a recovery CD/DVD has gone. Your options are to:
    create a recovery USB; or
    create a recovery image.
    Recovery USB
Colakid's post talks you through how to make a recovery USB: from control panel, choose Recovery, then Create a Recovery Drive, and follow the prompts.
However, the 'recovery USB' can be a bit misleading. When the wizard starts, there is an option to 'copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive'. If you do not check this option, you will still need installation media to reset your PC.
Since you have upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, you will probably not be able to check this option, as it will be greyed out (like it is in the picture in Colakid's post).
If you go ahead and create the USB anyway, you will be able to boot to it, but you won't be able to reinstall Windows unless you have the installation media (or possibly a system image, though I haven't tried that).
    Recovery image
The recovery image is an image of your computer that Windows will use when you select the 'refresh my pc' option. You can create a recovery image using the recimg.exe tool.
First, open an elevated command prompt (type cmd and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter).
Next, create the recovery image by typing:
    recimg /createimage [path]
Where [path] is the folder you want the image in, eg C:\Recovery. You cannot set the file name - it will always be called CustomRefresh.wim.
Let it run its course. When it's done, you can check that it is the current recovery image by typing
    recimg /showcurrent
It's important to keep in mind what a recovery image contains. It will have your Windows system files (in their current state), and the desktop apps you have installed (so it makes sense to do this after a fresh install of Windows). It will
not backup any Metro apps or user files, because these are not deleted during a system refresh. If you want a complete backup of everything on your computer the way it is now, you should make take a complete system image (which
can be done from the File History settings in control panel - at the bottom left there will be a 'System Backup Image' option - or you can do it using any other backup software like Ghost or Acronis).
In my case, I created the recover image straight after upgrading to Windows and it was about 6 GB.
Prepare/Create and register an recovery partition, so the option Copy the Recovery Partition becomes available in the recovery drive UI  application.
In elevated command run> RECIMG -CREATEIMAGE C:\REFRESHIMAGE<
This will create a new custom.wim in a folder Refreshimage.
Now lets get ready to register the path of the image, so our create recovery drive option(COPY THE RECOVERY PARTITION FROM THE PC TO THE RECOVERY DRIVE) becomes available.
    >  In the folder you created there will be a> custom.wim<
    change it to>INSTALL.wim<
    > Create a folder In Cd/directory using Elevated command> mkdir c:\Win8.1-Recovery,>
    Win81-Recovery<.
    > Copy the  INSTALL.WIM. Put in the Win81-recovery folder created.
    > Run in elevated commad>REAGENTC /SetOSImage /Path C:\Win81-Recovery\INSTALL.WIM /Index 1<
Do not copy the arrows if using copy and paste, that is my way of pointing out lines of code
Information provided by the link below, thanks Keith. I simplified the process for easy following and added my own tweak from trial and error for the install.

  • Windows Xp machines cannot connect to Windows Server 2008r2 after Update from Microsoft.

After allowing sever updates from Microsoft, My customers XP Machines can no longer connect to the Windows server shares using the server name.  We get "can't find path error".  I can ping the IP address but not the Net-bios name.  I
can connect by ip address but have a software that must use the name "server" in an executable.  The workgroup sees all of the other computers just not the server, the server see's the windows 7 machines but not the XP machines.  I have
tried every fix I can find in the forums and online.  I did find and AD and DNS errors during the update.  Errors 4004, 4005, 4015.  Things I have tried: ipconfig flushdns, renew, registerdns, nbtstat -A servername, etc.
    Thanks

As IP address works but not NetBIOS name, it seems like a DNS or WINS server related issue as Milos said.
If there is no WINS server configged, check DNS settings (server side) and suffix settings (client side).

  • Iso Apps disappeared from iTunes on my Windows 7 PC after installing the recent iTunes update.

I can not see my apps in the latest version of iTunes on my Windows 7 computers. Moreover, when I connected my iPhone, iPad, etc. to the PC, iTunes did not recognize the iOS devices (wants to erase iPad/iPhone and sync to computer) even though this is the computer I have been syncing to all along. All of this has taken place since I installed the most recent version of iTunes within the past couple of weeks.

  • Windows Partition gone after updating to Yosemite

Hello I have recently updated to Yosemite and was unaware of the bug that causes the partitions to disappear.
I have read threads and the steps are way too difficult to understand and all i see is coding and other things.
If anyone could help please (step by step) in a simple way.
Windows 7 Partition shows up as disk0s4.
    Macbook Pro 13' in 2012.
Have downloaded TestDisk but have no knowledge in how to use it.

And I have a couple of questions to the steps below:
    1. Delete the old entry and create a new entry at GPT#4. (Is this step done in testdisk? If it is, what are the steps to get to this step?)
    sudo gdisk /dev/disk0
    p
    d
    4
    n
    4
    86923264
    538218489
    0700
    p
    w
    y
    2. You will need to reboot after the change, because the disk you are booted from is the one being modified. Reboot will rebuild disk0s4 using the start/end you entered.
    3. Run the dd command - sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C and check that the first line contains "R.NTFS". (Done in testdisk?)
    4. This is a tedious process and you want to check after the second 'p'rint command that it looks reasonable, before the 'w'rite and 'y'es to confirm. (Testdisk?)
    5. Once you a working GPT#4, a new hybrid MBR needs to be created which will overwrite what you see in your Fdisk output. This is also done using GPT Fdisk (Gdisk). (Download link to Gdisk?)
    6. a. Test 1 - Can you see your Bootcamp volume in Finder.
        b. Test 2 - Can you files in the Bootcamp volume?
        c. Test 3 - Can you see Bootcamp in your System Preferences -> Startup Disk.
        d. Test 4 - If Test 1-3 are successful, select Bootcamp and click on Restart. You may need Windows startup repair, if you see a hanging underline cursor at the top left corner of your screen. In most cases, it is not required.

  • E71: Windows Live mailbox after update

I've updated my E71 from Ver. 100.... to 200...., and after restoring the phone data, my Windows Live mailbox's icon changed into a white circle with a question mark, it doesn't respond to any action (delete, connect, etc.), it doesn't even appear in mail sittings, and I had create a new live mailbox, so I can't even delete the whole mailbox.
It just stays there, and can't get the notification on active desktop, as the "E-mail  2 notification" is reserved for the first Live account, which stopped working already.

this is not a serious problem.............. what u have to do is some work..........
    1) Remove the new windows live installed by you and make a backup of ur device
    2) Do  a hard reset which will turn ur device as it left the factory totally new which will be '*' '3' 'Call Key' and Power button all pressed at the same time after u have removed ur phone battery for at least 5 mins. It wud turn ur phone as it was when it left the factory.
    3) restore
    i think it shud work...
