Rebuild iPhoto os x

iPhoto chrashes while trying to delete a photo. Is thre any way to rebuild iPhoto '11?

If it's only one photo that's causing the crash 4try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
     User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you have a large number in the Trash bin report back and I'll post a couple of possible ways to get them deleted.

  • Rebuild iphoto 9.2.3

    rebuild iphoto 9.2.3

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Rebuilding iPhoto Libraries

    Hello,
I have three questions about rebuilding iPhoto libraries.
First, is it better to use iPhoto's built in rebuild (with all boxes checked) or use iPhoto Library Manager's rebuild?
Second, I have several libraries in iPhoto 8.1.2 that I plan to import into Aperture 3.  Although they all seem OK, should I rebuild them before doing the Aperture import?
Finally, is it advisable to upgrade these libraries to the latest version of iPhoto before importing?
    Thanks for your input.
    Mike

First, is it better to use iPhoto's built in rebuild (with all boxes checked) or use iPhoto Library Manager's rebuild?
Depends entirely on the problem you re trying to solve. Iphoto's own tools involve working on the existing database. Library Manger creates a whole new Library and copies a lot of the material over - but not all. Running iPhoto's own tools with all the options checked makes no sense. Why try and rebuild the main DB file if you then ask it to replace it with the automatic back up?
Second, I have several libraries in iPhoto 8.1.2 that I plan to import into Aperture 3.  Although they all seem OK, should I rebuild them before doing the Aperture import?
Why would you? These are steps to take if you have a problem only. So I would import them to Aperture. If all goes well then no problem. If there is an issue a Rebuild may be in order at that point.
Finally, is it advisable to upgrade these libraries to the latest version of iPhoto before importing?
I can see no reason to.

  • Rebuilding iphoto library - why, downside, pitfalls

It seems easy to rebuild iPhoto library.
    1. Will it fill iPhoto with duplicates of those already successfully viewed in my iPhoto?
    2. Is there a reason to NOT rebuild iPhoto library?
    3. Will I then see photos I thought were gone?
    4. Would the rebuild transfer the original, full-sized photos or just thumbnails?
    5. Would only a fool do this for the heck of it to see what happens?

1 - rebuilding has not effect on duplicates - it will neither create nor remove them - it simply fixes the database
2 - no reason to unless you have a problem - if you like the way iPhoto works dfor you then there is no reason to rebuild
3 - often - it depends on why you thought they were gone - if they are not showing due to problems with the database then it will - if they are not showing because they are gone then it will not - the only way to find out is to do it
4 - the rebuild transfers nothing - it simply rebuilds the database
5 - what ever you want - again if things are good then why
in any case since step one of all experianced users recomendation is to always have a good current backup and specifically to backup prior to rebuilding then there is no risk because you have a current backup

  • Rebuilding iPhoto library changes .mov files to raw

I rebuilt my iPhoto library and since then any .mov files (specifically MJPEG) were changed to RAW in the info panel. The files haven't been changed, but if you try to view them, they small thumbnails are intact, but expanded are a triangular icon with an exclamation point. If I locate the original file and reimport it, it fixes the problem for that individual problem, but this is a tedious solution. MP4 files and H264 files were not affected. I have not been able to locate any information for a solution. Is there a way to force iphoto to change the file format so that it properly recognize that it is a video file, not an image file?
    Snow Leopard, iPhoto 9.1.5

Why do you think they've become Raw?
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • HT2638 I click rebuild iphoto and it says its loading but its not working!

I click rebuild iphoto and it says its loading but i dont think is working. i have left it for a long time to load and it just keeps loading! HELP!!!

If you want help you’ll need to give us more information. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Rebuild iPhoto Question(s)

Hello. I have recently upgraded my Operating System to OS10.4.11 from OS 10.2.8.
I am using iPhoto 4 and have about 12,000 photos. I have 100 GB free on my HD and have the photos backed up on CD's and hopefully in my Lacie 500GB HD, using Retrospect Express for the Backup Program. I say 'hopefully' as I am still a novice at the Backup/External HD part of things.
Prior to the upgrade I was having various problems with iPhoto, like white/greyed out squares instead of photos for about 150 photos. Since the upgrade to OS10.4 I seem to have lost about 200 photos or so.
I would like to do 2 things, rebuild iPhoto and if things become normal, upgrade to the latest iPhoto version.
I have tried Rebuilding by following the Apple method entitled 'Rebuilding the iPhoto Library'. This involves holding down the Command and Option key while opening iPhoto from the Dock. I tried that but was confused about the prompts that appeared and eventually clicked on 'Find Library' but I think I should have clicked on 'Create Library'. Can someone advise me on this please.

Thanks for comments BF. I will try to outline how the problem started and what the present situation is as you requested. Following my 10.4 upgrade, I tried opening iPhoto from the Dock. I dont recall exactly what prompt came up, but recall it said something about iPhoto not being available, and iPhoto would not open for me.
I started to do some research, as I had been having problems with iPhoto even previous to the OS10.4 upgrade, and came across the Apple instructions referred to above, kb/HT2042 "Rebuilding the iPhoto Library". I followed their instructions which was to open iPhoto, from the Dock, while holding down the Command and Option keys.http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2042
Thats when the prompts Find Library or Create Library came up, as I mentioned, and I clicked on Find Library. At this time, my iPhoto is opening normally from the Dock but as I indicated, there still are a lot of photos missing. Prior to the OS10.4 upgrade, I recall there being over 13,000 photos and now there are under 12,000. I also noticed for example that one of my Albums is missing photos that I know were in it--they are likely some of the ones that are missing in the Photo Library. Also the thumbs data all are missing as I indicated.
That's really all I can tell you other than I am far from an expert on computers and/or iPhoto and I really do appreciate your assistance. I will do my best to answer any queries you may have to help me through this. Regards.
PS. Thanks Larry for your comments also.

  • Can't load or rebuild iPhoto library

My iPhoto library hasn't been appearing. I've tried going through the 4 repair options (that show when I open with Command+Option) and have tried the rebuild a few times now. Each time I try to rebuild, it stalls at the same place (pic attached). From there, nothing happens and my photos are trapped in the library.I have also tried moving the library to an external hard drive and loading it into iPhoto from there and it simply does nothing. If i open the application again, it goes to the regular "get started" page.
I have a large library of 280GB. I'm not sure how many images are in there.
Can anyone help me restore my library? Should I be using Aperture for a library this size?

    Thanks LarryHN,
I've gone through this now with some success. However the library is now 167GB down from 280GB. With that many photos, I can't easily tell if anything is missing. Is there any reason for such a large drop in size of the library? I thought maybe it was stripping duplicates but I couldn't have had more than a few duplicates.
Also, the rebuild stripped the division of photos into 'events'. Is that normal?
    Thanks

  • IPhoto crashes even after trying to rebuild iPhoto library database.

iPhoto won't open after I synced new iPhone 5s to my Mac v10.6.8. I tried holding down the Option and Command key and this forced the iPhoto library manager to open. I then ticked to rebuild Library Manager and then it crashes again.  I also cannot back up my existing iphoto library as I am unable to locate it. I have checked for latest software updates and it appears to be update. My iphoto is version 7.1.5

I tried holding down the Option and Command key and this forced the iPhoto library manager to open. I then ticked to rebuild Library Manager and then it crashes again.
What you have accessed here are iPhoto's own repair tools. iPhoto Library Manager is a 3rd party application.
I also cannot back up my existing iphoto library as I am unable to locate it
By default your iPhoto Library is in your Pictures Folder.
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • Possible to rebuild iPhoto Library in a new location?

I have managed (between multiple updates of iPhoto over the years) to wind up with a lot of duplicate photos in my iPhoto Library folder. What I'd like to do is have iPhoto rebuild it's library in a new location, so as to eliminate anything in that folder than iPhoto's not using. I'm guessing I have at least 1GB of duplicates (not counting the Modified folder).
For example, I have 2000 - 2005 folders at both the top level of the iPhoto Library, as well as in the Originals and Modified folders.
    Any way to do this?
    PowerBook 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Are the photos is those year/month/day folder duplicates of some already in the library? If so then just remove them to the desktop and launch iPhoto. (Make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library folder beforehand just in case).
If those files are not in the library then try rebuilding the library, launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library, and select the option to recover orphaned files. See if that won't clean up those rogue folders. But, if the photos in those folders are truly duplicates of those in the library, you can trash those folders. They are like our appendix, no longer needed.
The answer to your previous answer was no. Sorry I wasn't more specific. Rebuilds are done within the current iPhoto Library folder.

  • Problem with rebuilding iPhoto library

    Hi,
I'm having problem to rebuild my iPhoto library. I have more than 11 000 photos / video clips and 70Gbs in my iPhoto library and everything has been ok until I started to import photos from my new iPhone 4. First issue was that when I imported photos from iPhone those new photos disappeared after restart of iPhoto. I read from somewhere that iPhoto library rebuild -functions might help and I rebuild the library and thumbnails. It actually worked for that problem. After that those photos which I imported from iPhone remained in iPhoto and I even got some disappeared photos back. But after that rebuilt I noticed that most of the video clips could not be opened inside iPhoto. When clicking thumbnail of a video clip just a big exclamation mark jumped up. I checked from iPhoto library originals -folder that those video clips still remain. From there I can open the clips in Quicktime Player. So, I tried to rebuild my library again. Rebuilding started ok, it went smoothly up to 65% but ceased there. Now it has been in that 65% -condition for 24 hours and I don't know what to do. I don't know if it's still actually doing something or not. "Force to quit" -function does not say that iPhoto is not answering and "System Monitoring" shows that there are still some messages going on in iPhoto -process. I don't know should I force iPhoto to quit or just wait another 24 hours...
Any advices what I should do and how I can get my video clip viewing back to iPhoto?
Computer is iMac 2006 with OS 10.6.8 and iPhoto is version 9.1.5. I have both Quicktime players (7 and 10) installed.

If the rebuild doesn't help try Fix 101:  make a temporary, backup copy of the library if you don't already have a backup copy and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.

  • Rebuilding Iphoto Library is it safe?

Hi I'm currently rebuilding my Iphoto Library which has 70,000 photos. I checked all the boxes, does rebuilding the library effect my ratings, keywords, or my manual arrangement of my Photos? How long does it normally take to complete? Will my library and events remain just as they were after it rebuilds? Thanks

If you're currently rebuilding then it's a mite late to be asking, no?
    DId you back up first?
Assuming that your Library was in good shape to begin with, then it should make no difference to how you've arranged things in iPhoto.
It could take a while as you're also rebuilding the thumbnails. With 70k photos I would expect a couple of hours.

  • Rebuilding iPhoto '05 database before upgrading to iPhoto '06 lost images

Because of the bizarre library problems I've been having, I downgraded to iPhoto '05, put my backed-up iPhoto library back in place and had iPhoto '05 rebuild the database.
When I upgraded to iPhoto '06 and my database was converted, I poked around my old film rolls to make sure everything worked. In several instances, I could see thumbnails, but when I tried to view the picture in edit mode, I got a blank screen with a grey X.
I looked in the Originals and Modified folders and confirmed that the photos were gone.
Any idea what could have caused this? I never modify my iPhoto library manually, so I'm fairly sure I didn't bork something myself.
    thanks in advance,
