Rebuild iTunes with Just VERY LARGE iTunes Music Folder

Hello,
As much as I tried to back every bit of my iTunes database up regularly, I failed to assure the quality of these files. Well, I had a family member accidentally delete the iTunes Library and iTunes Library.xml files (yup, my mistake to allow them access to my Mac in the first place). It is only now that I realize the most recent backup copy of these files are corrupted. The really good news here is that I have multiple intact copies of my entire iTunes Music Folder. My goal is to recreate my iTunes Library and iTunes Library.xml files to accommodate it.
Now, here is the kicker. My database is 38000 songs and 190 GB large! I certainly know how to add songs iTunes, but it seems as though it chokes with large projects like this and misses random parts of the tag information. So, what is the best way to get me out of this hole, with the least amount of trouble and most efficient restorative actions? While I wait for an answer, I am also researching various other options and digging deep into the root to rescue deleted files.
If we learn from our mistakes, then I obtained my PhD years ago,
Dr. Z.

Dr. Z,
My iTunes library is about the same size. I am experiencing a little different problem though. At times when I start iTunes up I get a message stating that my library is corrupt and it then tries to restore it from the xml file. It finishes, but doesn't get every song. I then have to select all song and clear them while keeping the files intact on the hard drive. I then have to add my iTunes music folder and all its contents using the iTunes "Add to Library" function. I gets all the songs, but of course now all the dates, when the songs were added to the library, have the current day's date. I have to repeat this whole scenario about three times a week. Grrrrr...
It seems like iTunes isn't capable of handling large amounts of songs. I'm sure it shoud be able to, but it sure isn't at the moment.
As to your problem, what if you try adding your songs a chunck at a time instead of all at once? Maybe that will keep your data intact. Just a thought. Might work. I've seen stranger things work.

iTunes is totally frozen with multiple paints of same screen within itself. Also incredibly slow. Are there alternative players I can use with my iPhone, or must I use iTunes with my iPhone? iTunes is effectively unusably slow. I am using Windows 7.
I only use it once every few weeks and each time it is more disappointing than the previous time. does it run better on a Mac than Windows? Is this app really the future of media? Really?

I am using iTunes 11.1.3 -- The most recent version. When I select something from my albums it just freezes. I have restarted it a few times with same result.

  • Memory consumption for an ASO app with a very large outline

    Solaris 10 running Essbase 9.3.1.3.08 64-bit
We have an app with a very large outline (3Gb). When we do a dimension restructure, it takes about 30 minutes which I suppose is reasonable. However, it takes up about 13Gb RAM to do this and doesn't release the memory when finished unless we restart the app.
Is this normal? It seems an incredible amount of RAM to use, even for such a large outline and it doesn't release it when done.
    The box has 32Gb RAM.

    I think it was version 9.3.1.3 that outline compaction started working. The first thing I would try is to compact the outline. The MaxL statement for it is Alter database xxxx.yyyy compact outline;
ASO Outlines tend to grow with every change, do you really have that many members and attributes that would make that big an outline. If it keeps growing at some point it will corrupt

  • Best Practice for very large itunes and photo library..using Os X Server

    Ok setup....
one Imac, one new Macbook Pro, one Macbook, all on leopard. Wired and wireless, all airport extremes and express'
have purchased a mac mini plus a firewire 800 2TB Raid drive.
I have a 190GB ever increasing music library (I rip one to one no compression) and a 300gb photo library.
So..question Will it be easier to set up OS X Server on the mini and access my itunes library via that?
Is it easy to do so?
I only rip via the Imac, so the library is connected to that and shared to the laptops...how does one go about making the imac automatically connect to the music if i transfer all music to the server ?
The photo bit can wait depending on the answer to the music..
    many thanks

I have a much larger itunes collection (500gb/ 300k songs, a lot more photos, and several terabytes of movies). I share them out via a linux server. We use apple TV for music/video and the bottleneck appears to be the mac running itunes in the middle. I have all of the laptops (macbook pros) set up with their own "instance" of itunes that just references the files on the server. You can enable sharing on itunes itself, but with a library this size performance on things like loading cover art and browsing the library is not great. Please note also I haven't tried 8.x so there may be some performance enhancements that have improved things.
There is a lag on accessing music/video on the server of a second or so. I suspect that this is due to speed in the mac accessing the network shares, but it's not bad and you never know it once the music starts or the video starts. Some of this on the video front may be the codec settings I used to encode the video.
I suspect that as long as you are doing just music, this isn't going to be an issue for you with a mini. I also suspect that you don't need OSX server at all. You can just do a file share in OSX and give each machine a local itunes instance pointing back at the files on the server and have a good setup.

  • Looking to publish my VERY LARGE iTunes library on the web

Can someone recommend a way of publishing a large iTunes library (currently 62,373 tracks and growing quickly) to the web? There doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this. I have printed my library to .PDF, but I can't convert the .PDF to MS Excel as the file contains more than the 65K line limit in Excel. Exporting my list to .XML won't open in Excel for the same reason, too many lines.
My ultimate goal is to make my iTunes library searchable on the web for people to browse and select tracks for their events. I don't need them linked to iTunes for purchase, nor do I want the music on the web. I only want to create a database for web searching the Albums, Artists, Song Title, Genre, and Song length. I would also like the iTunes artwork to be included.
    Thanks,
    Al

Copy the entire _iTunes folder_ , not just the iTunes music folder.
When you have everything ready on teh new internal, you can do 2 things.
1 - Copy the entire iTunes folder back to the internal.
2 - Leave it on the external, start iTunes holding the Option key and select *Choose existing library*. Select the *iTune library* file in the iTunes folder on the external.
iTunes will simply now use this for everything.

  • HT203167 I found my missing song in the itunes media folder on my computer so how do I move to itunes with the rest of my music?

    Hello, mermaid72.
Thank you for the question.  This article will help you import any missing media you located on your computer.  I have also included a screenshot that covers this process as well.

  • ITunes location not in the my music folder?

My Itunes has been installed in the my music folder (I have XP) and worked until about yesterday, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, but Itunes won't open now because it says the ITunes folder cannot be located, and that it should be in its default location (my music), so it will not open. Any ideas on what I can do?

Well, do you care about your ratings and playcounts? If so, try the press & hold thing again but instead, choose an existing ITL file and pick the "normal" one in your default itunes folder. Although that one may be corrupted and hwy you got that error in the first place.
    On XP it's
    C:\Documents and Settings\ username \My Documents\My Music\iTunes
There might be an ITL file in a subfolder named Previous iTunes Libraries that you could use.
If you don't care about ratings & other metadata, sure, go ahead and rebuild your new blank library. From Win Explorer, just drag your top-level music folder over ito the itunes window.
You don't have to add things one-by-one, in other words.

  • ITunes 7 - 2 user accounts 1 music folder sharing issues

I just downloaded iTunes 7 this afternoon. I imported some music from my CDs into my account. My wife and I have a shared music folder. I then logged onto my wifes account and added the music to her library. Her accound moved the music files from the original folder to an Unknown Artist folder losing the file information. Does anyone know why this is happening?
I apologize if this is topic has already been posted.

If you have a folder on the hard drive called anything you want (Shared Files for example) and leave it in the root directory, anyone should be able to access it. If one of the user accounts doesn't have administrator access, writing to that folder may be an issue.
To fix this, control-click (right click) and select get info. Go to the permissions tab. Use the little arrow next to 'Details' to make sure it shows the details. Select the group 'everyone' and allow them to 'Read and Write'. Click on the checkbox 'Apply to enclosed items'. You'll need to do it from an administrator account.
    Should sort you out.

  • ITunes 11.0.5 not showing music folder files

Where to begin? Over the years, my music folder (approx 200gb) became a mess; approx 1/3 "missing" from iTunes, dozens of artists files somehow stashed in other artist files (all my Stones, for instance, was in the Ella Fitzgerald folder... why, who knows) , and not having access to everything I knew to be there. So, after upgrading to 11.0.5, I made a backup of my messed up Music folder, copied that to a scratch drive and began going through, artist by artist, and eliminating dupes, correcting spelling, and so on. Took 18 hours. When satisfied, opened iTunes, created a new library, clicked Add To Library, pointed it to the corrected folder, and let it do it's thing. In Prefs, I had selected "Keep Media folder organized" and "Copy files to media folder when adding".
This morning, when checking on things, noticed that the Music folder did indeed have all the files in there, yet none of them showed in iTunes. Quit and restarted iTunes, and only things from the cloud where present, less than 10% of my music overall. During import, iTunes showed that it was downloading album art, equalizing volume, etc. for these files.
Decided to start over again, trashed that library, made a new one, pointed to the right place, same results. The files are indeed in the proper place, iTunes is showing the correct location for these files, yet they're still not showing up.
I do still have the untouched backup. One of the many things I trashed in the process were dozens of "previous iTunes libraries", which are still in the backup. Also, after backing up, trashed everything in my media folder on my MBP to insure that nothing old was left behind. Might that be causing this issue? Figured it I treated it as a first time, brand new thing, that all would be good.
    Obviously not.
    Thoughts?
Thanks in advance for any help, and have a great day.
    Roger

  • Itunes doesn't recognize my ipod, music folder error

my pc recognizes ipod but itunes doesn't recognize it. i bought my ipod classic 120 gb last week. first time, everything was alright and itunes were syncing well... but after a day, itunes started to not recognize my ipod. i tried lots of things to fix it; uninstalling and reinstalling itunes; restarting my ipod; i did the things in this page http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363?viewlocale=en_US; i installed floola etc etc... but nothing's changed...
and, there's a "ipod_control/music folder" error... how can i fix it?

this osunds similar to the problem I am having with a ipod classic 120 gig model. Itunes is saying that the ipod wont work without itunes 8.0 and to download thelatest version of itunes. And I have the latest version of itunes- 8.2. and it still does not recognize my ipod.

  • When transfering music into itunes, music not showing in itunes app, but songs are in music folder.

when i transfered many songs from external hard drive into itunes library, the songs do not appear after transfer completes. it appears as if songs are being added to library. when i search through itunes app, songs are missing, when i go to the folder on computer that holds my itunes library songs are there. any help?
latest version of itunes with windows 7.
    thanks

Create a smart playlist that would match one of the albums. I suspect you'll find the tracks show up in it...
My guess is that something has gone wrong with the internal index of the Music playlist. Download the current iTunes Free Single of the Week. I know it sounds odd, but it should  fix the problem.
If that doesn't work close iTunes and delete the hidden file sentinel from inside the main iTunes library folder, then start iTunes again. iTunes should run a consistency check when it starts up which ought to clear up any anomalies.

  • ITunes will not open and my Music folder is empty

When I try to open iTunes (even when holding shift) it says "The "iTunes" folder could not be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "Music" folder."
My music folder is empty, however, the music is still on the computer - I have the same amount of space remaining on my hard drive as I did before this happened.
Any suggestions? I have it all backed up fortunately.

Hello, Following are quick tips to try. Along with a knowledge article on how to completely remove itunes
    1. Create a new user, attempt to launch iTunes and see if it opens
    2. Run Disk Utility on the user account that is not able to open iTunes, relaunch after repairs are complete
    3. Go to Applications - Move the iTunes application to trash, Reboot Mac, Download and install latest iTunes again and launch

  • About to install iTunes, where should i move my music folder?

So i am about to install iTunes and wanted to know if i should move my music flder to a certain location/folder?
If i don't have to move my music folder then i am assuming that iTunes will find the folder and make copies of my music?
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

You don't need to move anything. When you install iTunes it will create a number of default files and folders in default locations. The iTunes folder (which will contain the iTunes library files and the iTunes Music folder) will be created in C:\Username\Music in Windows Vista. When you install iTunes for the first time you'll be asked if you want the program to scan you computer for music files to add to the library or if you want to add them yourself: Adding Content to iTunes

  • I can't get iTunes to Start after moving my Music Folder anyone know what to do ? yes I have tried reinstalling iTunes..

I Moved the iTunes folder in My Music to my D:\ Drive to get some extra room on my computer, then when I tried to open iTunes it wouldnt open so I moved the folder back and nothing happened again after I tried to open iTunes... so I deleted all the iTunes files on the D:\ Drive and then reinstalled iTunes... Still the same problem.. can anyone help ?

Moving the /My Music/ folder will not prevent iTunes from opening. That only contains the iTunes library, not the application files. Moving that folder would only get you an empty library when you open iTunes.
    I suggest you reinstall iTunes.

  • Why is iTunes is duplicating files in the "Music" folder on Windows Vista?

I've always kept my music in mp3 format in my Windows Vista "Music" folder. When I drag a particular album to itunes, it imports it and I'm able to add to my iphone. It appears itunes is making a second 'itunes copy' of the album in the itunes- music folder. Is there any way around this? Having 2 versions of all my music is killing my hard drive space.
