Rebuilding Catalogue in PSE 12

Every time I start up the Catalogue it takes ages re-building its content, and always ends up with "missing files". Why is this, and can it be put right?

I suggest that you right click on one of those thumbnails and then choose UpdateThumbnail. then post back here with the results.
Now I am not sure if that Update Thumbnail will solve the problem immediately but even if it does not it will be useful troubleshooting.
Also suggest that you
-- identify what version of Windows you are running.
-- for the thumbnail on which you do the Update Thumbnail, post the pixel resolution of the photo file. If you select that photo and look in the Properties box yu will see a size and next to it will be additional numbers like  3333 x 4444 it is those numbers either side of that "x " that I want to see.
-- post how much RAM memory you do have.

  • Unable to restore catalogue to PSE 7 or 8

I have been through all the Photoshop Elements from Photoshop Album - all have been successful -until now! I recently clean installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my PC and installed PSE8. I restored a backup from an external hard disc (from a previously backup PSE7 backed up from Vista previously) which worked for some days and suddenly announced that the catalogue was corrupt and stopped working. I reinstalled PSE 8 and attempted the restoration again a number of times with no success. The photos are restored to the hard disc but not to the Organiser which otherwise seems to work normally except it says: "the watch folder service is unavailable". I also installed PSE7 on my PC but it will not restore from the PSE7 backup.
I have PSE6 on a laptop working normally and backed it up to a hard disc and attempted a restoration to PSE7 on my PC. It finishes with: "Restoration successful" followed by: "Conversion operation failed". I feel that the information is safe on the external hard disc but how do I transfer it to my PC?
I would be grateful for assistance.

To simplify the troubleshooting, I recommend uninstalling PSE 8, reinstalling PSE 7, and focusing on getting PSE 7 to restore the PSE 7 backup.  Then when you get that working, you can reinstall PSE 8 and convert your catalog.
After uninstalling PSE 8 and reinstalling PSE 7, if the restore still doesn't work, post back here with more precise details about the issue: the location of the backup, the precise command and options you gave to restore, any error messages, the symptoms in the Organizer.

  • How to Transfer Catalogue from PSE 3 to 8 or 11

How do you transfer a PSE 3 catalogue form an XP computer to PSE 8 or 11 on a new 7-64bit computer. I have not installed PSE 8 or 11 on the new computer yet. I need to have the PSE 3 catalogue transfered complete with groups and collections to the new computer. Should I install PSE 3 on the new computer then transfer or should I install PSE 8 or 11. I'm told that you can't transfer PSE 3 to PSE 11, but will PSE 8 work? What is the best procedure to do all of this?

Is there any reason to also save the original jpg image files in a separate location, like an external hard drive?  Or does the software basically do that when you restore?
In my opinion, after the restore is successful, and you now have a PSE11 catalog on the new computer, you want to make a backup of that (in PSE11, File->Backup Catalog) to an EHD, and save it for emergencies. Once that is successful, you could, if you want to, get rid of the old PSE3 backup.
Since the backup created this way contains both the photo files and catalog files, there is no need to specifically save or backup the original photo files via another operation.

  • How do I rebuild catalogue or recover data from an external hard drive?

I have a 2 Tb western digital hard drive that I keep  my photos on.
I seem to have corrupted the catalogue file. My OS 10.7.5 shows the disk as empty,
Apple's Disk utility tells me that the disk is ok.
So my question is how do i rebuild the catalogue, or recover the files?
I have been using an Iomega 1 TB external disk as a photo back-up, but I see that
my system has not backed-up to that disk for about 6 months.
Any suggestions as to rebuilding the catalogue file or recovering the data would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • How can I convert a catalogue from PSE on an old PC to a PSE 11 catalogue on another PC?

I tried to do it according to the instructions in the help menu, however PSE 11 does not even recognize the file format.

How did you transfer the pictures and catalog to the new PC ? The recommended way is to do a full backup on the old PC, and a restore on the new one.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/backup-restore-move-catalog-photoshop.html
The restore process should first restore the picture files, then convert the catalog to the new PSE11 format.
The problem is different if you install PSE11 on the same old computer, you don't have to move files, only convert to the old format catalog.

  • Catalogue in PSE 5 wont show thumbnail

If I double click on the 'hourglass' in the catalogue

Is there a fix for this?

  • Help! How to open PSE 7 without opening catalogue

Tried to migrate from PSE 7 to PSE 9. After catalog conversion the browser seemed to open normally, however crashes in a few seconds. Called the Adobe helpdesk, they come to the conclusion that the catalogue is corrupt, however catalogue functioned normally in PSE 7. Since the catalogue has now been converted, it cannot open in PSE 7 anymore. I was happy having made a back up, but if I want to restore the back up,  PSE 7 is automatically opening the old - converted/ corrupt - catalogue and... hangs. Has anybody within Adobe thought of the possibility to open the software without, automatically, opening the catalogue. Seems particulary useful in these kind of circumstances.
I have tried to open and at the same time helding the ALT + SHIFT+ CTRL keys but that does not work.
First of all I d like to migrate with my old catalogue to PSE 9, but at least I would like to still be able to open my old catalogue (back up version) in PSE 7.
    Many thanks in advance
    Paul
    OS: Windows Vista

    Ken,
The converted catalog is on its original location (hence original version is overwritten). PSE 7 crashes when opening this catalog.
The backup of the original catalog is on an external drive. Now I want to restore the back-up catalog, my understanding is I need to do this with PSE 7. (I tried it with PSE 9 too but got an error message).
However when I open the PSE 7 software/ organiser it starts automatically to open the converted/ corrupted catalogue and the program crashes...
So key question is: how can I start up PSE without opening automatically a catalogue (then being able to restore the BU)
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards, Paul

  • Am I able to use one catalog in both pse 8 and 11

I have restored PSE 11 onto my computer, but wonder if and how, I can also use this same catalogue on PSE 8, which is also installed on the same computer.  I would therefore have 2 back-ups, and in some respects I prefer PSE 8 to work on.  Having once lost my entire Organizer, I like backing-up as a much as possible, with 63,000 pictures catalogued.  Thanks.

Catalogs are designed to work only in a single version of Photoshop Elements. They can be converted to work in a newer version of Elements, but they cannot go backward. Mainly this is controlled by the file extention on the catalog itself, and there may be hacks that can make an Elements 11 catalog work in Elements 8, but these are definitely not recommended as they are likely to lead to corruption of the catalog. There is definitely no way to use the same catalog in multiple version at once.

  • PSE 9 hangs when trying to open preferences from organiser ? and PSE 10

Moved from PSE 4 through every version til 9
    Windows 7 (64bit) 8gb ram
Now find that PSE 9 hangs with the banner "loading" when trying to access prefernces from organiser.
    I have already:
    Reinstalled elements
    Reapired catalogue
    Removed and recreated preferences file
    Removed catalogue
    Created new catalogue
Removed PSE 9 removed all traces of adobe from pc
    Reinstalled PSE 9
    All to no avail..........
Adobe wont help as not "current" product yet i have had it less than a year ? is it my fault they have changed it again ?
Some say upgrade but what if thats the same ? Why upgrade when current software seems faulty ?
has anyone had this problem and managed to fix it ?
Just downloaded trial version of PSE 10 and its exactly the same !!

Tried that but it didnt work
I have also downloaded PSE 10 and it does exactly the same !
I can access via edit page but the source files, colour setiings, etc can only be amended from organiser ?
Are there any known issues or compatibility issues ?

  • How to transfer files from pse 9 to pse 13 on new iMac

  • PSE 10 to PSE 11

Hi.    I need to get my catalogue into PSE 11 and  Wndows 7 on my new computer from PSE 10 and Windows XP. At the moment the backup of this catalogue is saved on an external hard drive. I tried using "restore catalogue" while in PSE 11 but it didn't put the keywords down tthe right side of the screen as I expected. Any suggestions please. Once I have it in PSE 11 I hope to be able to take all my photos with their keywords into Lightroom 4.4.  Any sggestions how to achieve this. I have tried ideas already suggested, but without   success.,
I will be extremely grateful for anyhelp I can get
    Thanks

    Hi Thanks for your reply
I did do the Backup from PSE 10 as in point 1.
I did restore from the TLY file
The catalogue of photos was imported. Only a few of the keywords appeared down the right side of the screen under imported keywords yet all the keywords appeared to be present in the band across the top of the screen which appears when you do a search.
"Upgrade PSE catalogue" did not show at all when I went into Lightroom  and photos I tried to just import instead  did not bring their keywords with them.
Do I need to uninstall LR and restore the catalogue again to PSE 11 then install LR. ?  Will LR upgrade the catalogue and bring the keywords even though they did not all appear in PSE 11.?
Part of my problem is that I am not familiar with PSE 11 and although I felt very confident with PSE 10, PSE 11 is very different so I am dealing with a new computer, a new version of PSE and the new program LR all in Windows 7 compared with Windows XP that I had before.... a whole lot to learn at once. But I will keep trying, and I do appreciate the help I can get.
    Thanks.

  • Elements 9 stops import to catalogue

    Installed Elements 9 to Win7-64.
    Updated software.
    Rebooted.
Intend to use existing Folder image locations on hd.
Attempted several times to import 25,020 images to catalogue.
    Elements stopped working each attempt.
    Find no solution in forum.
What might cause Elements to stop working?
    hime3iii

This is an update of FAILED attempts to import 25020 images PSE9 found from folders to catalogue.
Restored C:\ image to reinstall PSE9 fresh.
Downloaded 2 updates again and applied sequentially. Update dialogue successful.
Used Welcome to the Elements Organizer dialogue that appears when PSE9 opens.
    PSE9 STOPPED WORKING at 27%.
Clicked Display icon, selected Folder Location.
Navigated to image folder; right clicked folder, selected Import to Catalogue.
    PSE STOPPED WORKING at 27%.
Seems no Adobe tech support in forum for this situation.
Can anyone tell me how to contact Adobe tech support direct?
I can not find any link that permits direct contact to tech support.

If you have any previous version of PSE you can purchase the upgrade version. Check on-line such as Amazon as the full product is sometimes discounted, notably during the holiday season. Purchase whichever is the cheapest as both upgrade and full product are identical.
A free exchange is available only if you purchased PSE10 between 1 September and 24 September.

  • IMac 27" (late 2011), Mountain Lion, Bootcamp, and OSX partition disappearing and refusing to mount

    Hey all,
I'm putting this as a question in the discussion forms for bootcamp as I'm not sure where else to put it, but I resolved an issue I was having and having spent all of yesterday and the day before reading through this community and some others looking for answers and mostly seeing "hope you have backups, time to format!" (which to me is not always the best answer), I thought I would put it here for search purposes (with all the key words I had to use) in case anyone else has a similar issue.
    My scenario was this:
2011 27" iMac with Mountain Lion installed and Windows 7 installed on a boot camp partition.
    1) Haven't been in windows in a while, wanted to play some windows only steam games. Load windows 7. All is well. Have fun. Time to reboot into osx.
    2) Reboot using bootcamp toolbar icon.
    3) Wander away from computer. Come back to find windows 7 has loaded again. "That's weird", I think. Reboot again, this time hold down option key to select boot device.
    4) Discover the only options are the Bootcamp partition and the Recovery partition. OSX "Macintosh HD" partition has disappeared. Huh.
    5) Load recovery partition and load disk utility.
    6) Review disk utility to discover the Macintosh HD partition shows up in the list, but won't mount. Run verify and repair tools. Errors are as follows: Invalid node structure, invalid key length, invalid record count, etc etc. Running a repair fails - disk utility advises me to back up and erase the drive and that the partition is unrepairable. No offense disk utility, but I think I'll try a few more options first.
    7) Purchase DiskWarrior on advice of multiple posters in other threads and general online consensus of it being capable of fixing these sorts of errors. Go through process of loading bootable dvd.
    8) Diskwarrior cannot see the Macintosh HD partition. This is bad. Review more threads. Advice is that if diskwarrior can't fix it, hope you have backups and wipe the drive. Likely to be hardware failure. I'm skeptical of hardware failure, because windows is chugging along running fine if I boot into it, and I ran a scan of the windows partition and it came back clean. SMART status is also showing the drive is ok. However, running out of options and starting to lose hope.
    9) Follow advice in this support topic: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1417?viewlocale=de_de Both safe mode and disk utility aren't options (safe mode won't work without it seeing the partition) so sounds like fsck is the final option.
    10) Start up in Single User Mode (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492). Run fsck per instructions. It reports back ok.
    11) Realize fsck is checking the recovery partition, and not my damaged OSX partition. Realize I don't know anything about unix commands and have no idea how to tell fsck to check a different partition.
    12) Learn that I need to find out what the drive id is for the damaged partition. Reboot, load up disk utility, select greyed out "macintosh HD" partition, click info. Write down the id: disk0s2 (likely to be the default for you as well if you have one drive in your imac and a default bootcamp install).
    13) Go back into single user mode and type the following (without quotes): "fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk0s2"
    14) (Forgot to copy down exactly what it said at this point, but gist of it was that the drive had errors and isnt repairable). Feel like ****, thinking this is unlikely to resolve itself nicely.
    15) With nothing to lose, try to force fsck to rebuild the catalog - "fsck_hfs -rc -d /dev/disk0s2" I found this syntax on some forums and can't find the thread again. I have no idea what the -rc and -d do that -fy don't, but if someone can let me know, that'd be cool. Either way, this resulted in something actually happening. Tells me it is "rebuilding catalogue b-tree". Still, finishes with a bunch of errors about improperly linked files, more node errors, etc etc.
    16) Retry "fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk0s2". It seems to be doing stuff now, even though there are lots of errors. Continue to re-run fsck using this syntax. Probably ran it 10-15 times. Takes over an hour. Finally, minimal errors being reported.
    17) Realize that perhaps I should try Diskwarrior again now, since I've managed to do soemthing to the partition with fsck.
    18) Run Diskwarrior from bootable DVD. Success! It now sees the damaged partition. Reports that it has a bunch of damaged crtitical files, and needs to be repaired, but hey, at least it can see it.
    19) Let Diskwarrior do its thing, and reboot.
    20) Boot from repaired OSX partition. Rejoice. Immediately plug back in the timemachine drive you foolishly unplugged to take away over the holidays and neglected to plug back in before you had commenced work on stuff you didnt want to lose through formatting, which is why you are so desperate to recover files rather than wiping and restoring from time machine backups and avoiding this whole mess.
TL;DR - If Disk Utility and DriveWarrior fail you, try running fsck (using different syntax that apple recommends) as many times as it takes to get the partition to a stage where diskwarrior can see it. All advice I saw for similar questions was to erase, reinstall OSX, and restore from time machine backup. For those of you who are foolish like me and had files that werent time machine'd, or those who operate without, maybe try this.
    Hope this helps!

    What -rc & -d do.
    From: The fsck_hfs manual page.
    https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages /man8/fsck_hfs.8.html
-d      Display debugging information.  This option may provide useful information when fsck_hfs cannot repair a damaged file system.
-r      Rebuild the catalog btree.  This is synonymous with -Rc.
-R flags Rebuilds the requested btree.  The following flags are supported:
                             a       Attribute btree
                             c       Catalog btree
                             e       Extents overflow btree
I had the same problem as you but unfortunately "fsck_hfs -rc -d /dev/disk0s2" is failing saying: "The volume   could not be verified completely." I believe it's supposed to be telling me the partition's name (normally "Macintosh HD") between 'volume' and 'could' because there's 3 spaces in between the words.
"fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk0s2" is failing with the same error.
I tried "fsck_hfs -r -d /dev/disk0s2" since the c appears redundant with a lowercase R. and it again says it cannot be verified completely and adds "volume check failed with error 7". Which unfortunately is not documented on the fsck_hfs man page!
Unfortunately for me, Diskwarrior still can't see my busted Mac OS partition.
