Rebuilding indexes after importing...

My coworker and I are discussing whether it is necessary, or advised, to rebuild indexes after an import of the schema.
My thinking is that the index data is put into fresh blocks thereby creating a very flat index tree without any fragmentation.
But my coworker suspects that perhaps the blocks are built exactly as they existed in the source database.
I could understand, perhaps, if the refresh were done by using RMAN which copies block by block, but even then I'm not sure.
Can you help us understand this please?
Thanks.
Ed

Hi,
Normally, the indexes are build and statistics upfated after the import automatically. You do not ned to generate the statistics after the import until unless you are running very old version of database.

You can let Import prompt you for parameters by entering the IMP
command followed by your username/password:
Example: IMP SCOTT/TIGER
Or, you can control how Import runs by entering the IMP command followed
by various arguments. To specify parameters, you use keywords:
Format: IMP KEYWORD=value or KEYWORD=(value1,value2,...,valueN)
Example: IMP SCOTT/TIGER IGNORE=Y TABLES=(EMP,DEPT) FULL=N
or TABLES=(T1:P1,T1:P2), if T1 is partitioned table
USERID must be the first parameter on the command line.
Keyword Description (Default) Keyword Description (Default)
USERID username/password FULL import entire file (N)
BUFFER size of data buffer FROMUSER list of owner usernames
FILE input files (EXPDAT.DMP) TOUSER list of usernames

  • Trouble with CHM Search & Index after Importing Word Document

    Greetings,
I have recently inherited all things RoboHelp at work, but the last person to work with our projects left 6 months ago.  I received a brief overview of how our CHM files were generated from the same word document in RH HTML 7.
Currently, I am using RoboHelp HTML 9, but am having trouble with the Index and Search functionality from an imported Word 2003 (.doc) file.  During my import, only a single topic is created and named after the source document.  I believe this may be the root of my problems, but haven't had much luck with a solution.
I have stumbled my way through setting after setting, but feel I am missing something obvious.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ken
    Background:
Our source documents have a working TOC and Heading 1-3 structure.  When creating a new project and importing the document, the TOC is imported correctly.  The TOC navigations links seem to function correctly.
I have used the Smart Index Wizard to find new keywords from topic titles and topic text.  Unfortunately it seems the import only creates a single topic named after the source word document and therefore associates all keywords with the single topic.  when trying to navigate the index after the CHM is generated, all links simply reference the beginning of the document.
When using the search feature in the CHM, only a single result is returned for any search words.  This result is always the single topic as described above.  The results link always returns you to the start of the document but does highlight the keyword throughout the document.

When you import there is an Advanced button in one of the dialogs. Click that and you will be able to Paginate against chosen styles. That will break your document into topics.

  • Issue in rebuilding index after restoring database from sql server 2005 to 2012

    Hi All,
We have recently restored a database named DBA_admin from our sql server 2005 instance to sql server 2012 and we have added the database to out weekly maintenance plan. After adding the database to maintenance plan the job is failing every weekend due to
    below error message.
Error message from maintenance plan history:
Executing the query "ALTER INDEX [PK_lsttype] ON [dbo].[lstAssign..." failed with the following error: "Invalid object name 'admin.dbo.databaselog'.
ALTER_INDEX - dbo.PK_lsttype". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.
Below is the code within the maintenance plan which the rebuild index task is using for database dba_admin:
    USE [dba_admin]
    GO
    ALTER INDEX [PK_lstType] ON [dbo].[lstType] REBUILD PARTITION = ALL WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, SORT_IN_TEMPDB = OFF, ONLINE = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON, FILLFACTOR = 98, DATA_COMPRESSION = PAGE)
Please let me know if any one knows how to fix this issue.
    Thanks in Advance.

    Sorry for the confusion.
    Here is what is happening.
The query is failing while trying to rebuild index [Pk_lsttype] on table [lstAssign], both these objects belong to database
    admin.
I have verified the old instance there is table databaselog within the database
dba_admin, but in new SQL instance within the database dba_admin the table is not present.
Even I'm not sure of what this table databaselog has to do with rebuilding indexes on table
    lstAssign within the admin database.
I have manually tried to execute the alter index command within the database
admin and it is failing with the below error.
    ALTER_TABLE - dbo.Query_pnb_sms
Msg 208, Level 16, State 1, Procedure ddlDatabaseTriggerLog, Line 39
    Invalid object name 'dba_admin.dbo.databaselog'.

  • Face detection doesn't start indexing after import

    So here's another fun bug.
I started a large import overnight.  The import apparently finished by sometime mid-morning while I was away.  However, Lightroom didn't start doing its indexing task, apparently because of the dialog on screen indicating a few possible errors that may have occurred during the import.  Apparently, Lightroom felt like it had to wait for that dialog to be acknowledged by me before it could begin its indexing task.
So instead of a completed import, I now have a large group of images that still have to be indexed. That's 24 hours for one import SO FAR, and it's still not done! Lovely!

I just had to free space and reinstall xorg...

  • Datapump import of tables will automatically rebuild indexes ?

    dear all,
do datapump import of tables will automatically rebuild the indexes againts the associated tables?
    urgent response please

    Yes indexes are rebulit.
    From dba-oracle
Set indexes=n – Index creation can be postponed until after import completes, by specifying indexes=n. If indexes for the target table already exist at the time of execution, import performs index maintenance when data is inserted into the table. Setting indexes=n eliminates this maintenance overhead. You can also use the indexfile=filename parm to rebuild all the indexes once, after the data is loaded. When editing the indexfile, add the nologging and parallel keywords (where parallel degree = cpu_count-1).

  • Index size increased after import

hi i mentioned already the index creation problem when i am trying to create index using script after import of table. So droped the table and created table using script and index also without data, then i started to import at tablelevel with indexes=n then ia m importing data from the production database.
The size of the 2 indexes in production is 750 and 1200 mb each in test db both index size increased around double 1200 and 1700 mb each.I used same script in both db.Why this is increased here i took the export with compress=y full database export. Why the index size increased? when i created the index with initial extent and next extent size respective 800 and 100 mb.Whether is it the reason?
    with regards
    ramya

i gave initial 1000 and next 100 for the index size around 1.1 gb in production but here in test why this became around 1.7 gb,eventhough the pct increase is 50 it should come around 1.3 maximum.Whether it will give any performance problem
    wiht regards

  • REBUILD INDEX vs DROP/CREATE INDEX

    Hi there,
Does anyone has already got some performance degradation after REBUILD INDEXes ? Would it be better to perform DROP/CREATE INDEX instead ?
Thank you very much for anu reply.
    Best regards,
    Helena

    Hi,
    >>so is it then better to DROP/CREATE them ?
Well, In fact I learned that when you rebuild an index, Oracle creates a new index from the old index and does not perform sorting while building the new index, which results in performance enhancement. In this case, depending of the size of your data it's necessary sufficient space on a tablespace for storing the old as well as the new index (while creating the new index). Other advantage, is that Oracle can use the old index for answering queries while it builds the new index too using [alter index <index_name> rebuild online].
    Cheers

  • Rebuild Index VS Drop and Rebuild?

    Hey all,
I am currently redesigning a weekly process (weekly coz we pre determined the rate of index fragmentation) for specific indexes that get massive updates. The old process has proved to be able to fix and maintain reports performance.
In this process we rebuild specific indexes using the below command:
    Alter index index_name rebuild online;
This command takes around 10 min for selected indexes.
Testing the below took 2 min for 6 or 7 indexes.
    Drop Index Index_Name;
    Create Index Index_Name on Table_name (Col1, col, ..);
I know that indexes might not be used, and the application performance would be degraded with stale or non-existent stats. But our production and all our test DBs have procedures that daily gather stats on them.
I tested the below script to make sure that execution plan does not change:
    SELECT ProductID, ProductName, MfrID FROM PRODUCT WHERE MFRID = 'Mfr1';
    | Id | Operation | Name | Rows | Bytes | Cost (%CPU)|
    | 0 | SELECT STATEMENT | | 37 | 3737 | 13 (0)|
    | 1 | TABLE ACCESS BY INDEX ROWID| PRODUCT | 37 | 3737 | 13 (0)|
    | 2 | INDEX RANGE SCAN | PRODUCT_X1 | 37 | | 3 (0)|
dropping PRODUCT_X1 and recreating it only changed the cost to 12.
Gathering the stats again took the cost to 14.
No performance issues were faced and index was still used.
My question is: Is there any oracle recommendation that requires rebuilding the index instead of dropping and recreating it?
Is there any side effect to my approach that I did not consider?
    Thank you

    Charlov wrote:
I am currently redesigning a weekly process (weekly coz we pre determined the rate of index fragmentation)Nice. Not only have you defined and located index fragmentation but have also measured the rate at which it occurs.
Could you please share your definition of index fragmentation, how you detect it, and how you measure the rate of change of this fragmentation.
I am curious about all this since it can be repeatedly shown that Oracle btree indexes are never fragmented.
    http://richardfoote.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/index-internals-rebuilding-the-truth-ii.pdf
The old process has proved to be able to fix and maintain reports performance.Great so you have traces and run time statistics from before and after the rebuild that highlight this mysterious fragmentation and show how the fragmentation caused the report to be slow, details what effects the rebuild had that caused the reports to perform better.
Please share them as these would be an interesting discussion point since no one has been able to show previously how an index rebuild caused a report to run faster or even show the fragmentation that caused it to be slow in the first place.
I mean it would be a pity if the report was just slow because of an inefficient plan and compressing an index or two that probably shouldn't be used in teh first place appears to temporarily speed it up. Could you imagine rebuilding indexes every week, because some developer put the wrong hint in a query? That would be pretty funny.

  • Rebuild index vs Analyze index

    Hi All,
I am realy confused about rebuilding index versus Analyzing index.
Could anyone plz help me out what is the diffrence between them.
How to Perform analyze of indexes and Rebuld of Indexes for both Oracle 9i and 10g databases.
    Thanks a lot

I am realy confused about rebuilding index versus Analyzing index. tell us you are getting confused why we need to ananlyze before reubild index? if so
if index analyzed the whole statistics of index will be gathered.... then you can check what is the hieght of the index.. according to the height of the index you need to take step is index need to be really rebuild or not...
lets see furhter posts from experts if not clear..Thanks OK, so you determine the height of an index is (say) 4. What then ? If you decide to rebuild the index and the index remains at a height of 4, what now ? Was it really worth doing and do you rebuild it again as the index height is still 4 and still within your index rebuild criteria ? At what point do you decide that rebuilding the index just because it has a height of 4 is a total waste of time in this case ?
OK, so you determine the index only has a height of (say) 3, does that mean you don't rebuild the index ? But what if by rebuilding the index, the index now reduces to a height of just 1 ? Perhaps not rebuilding the index even though it has just a height of 3 and doesn't currently meet your index rebuild criteria is totally the wrong thing to do and a rebuild would result in a significantly leaner and more efficient index structure ?
So what if it's pointless rebuilding an index with a height of 4 but another index with a height of 3 is a perfect candidate to be rebuilt ?
Perhaps knowing just the height of an index leaves one totally clueless after all as to whether the index might benefit from an index rebuild ...

  • Can not edit photos - cannot see photos after import from camera

Hello all - Im having a very frustrating time getting Iphoto to work.
First is that I can not edit photos
double clicking photo - does not launch edit mode
select photo and click edit pencil - does not launch edit mode
Sometimes, however, edit mode is launched and thumbnails of photos can be seen along the top but not in the edit window.
Clicking any effects or adjustment buttons results in a program crash.
Originally installed with two users on the system - both admin.
Problem occurs with both admin users
Uninstalled all the I apps and deleted one admin user. Now only one user on the system (admin)
Reinstalled I Life 8 and updated with the 8.2 updater
Import 6 photos form camera in to new library. Still no joy.
Is there some permissions problem going on?
I have tried to rebuild the library several times.
Also - after importing photos from camera. No photos appears within the library window until I click on the screen. THEN a photo appears.
    Sincerely

  • IPhoto 7.1.5 - Disappearing Photos After Import of New Photos

This is a revisit of an earlier problem that has been addressed in several discussions. The problem is reproducible.
Background: Running 10.6.7 and iPhoto 7.1.5
I have a 14 GB Photo Library with > 10 thousand photographs. After importing another 100 photos, iPhoto AGAIN showed ONLY the latest event photos. Closing iPhoto and reopening iPhoto shows all of the events for ~1 sec and then "poof" the photo library says that there are 0 photos. I have followed the instructions in numerous discussions including my earlier post. Nothing works permanently.
SUMMARY: Repeated rebuilds of the photo library with iPhoto Library Manager (iPLM) bring the events/photos back until the next photo import. Then I am back where I started.
    I have done the following:
    1. Booted on the startup CD and checked and repaired all disk permissions (many) and other disk errors (none).
    2. Made a backup of the photo library.
    3. Rebuild photo library in iPhoto.  No joy. This NEVER helps anything.
    4. Deleted pLists and opened iPhoto. No help.
    5. Ran BatChmod to check on all of the permissions to RW. No permission problems are seen now.
    6. Ran iPhoto Library Manager and confirmed permissions set there are OK. It is important to make sure that the permissions are  set correctly to RW in iPLM.
    7. Ran iPLM and I can access ALL of the events and photos. (This is where the last discussion ended.)
    8. Imported more photos from my iPhone and  “poof” no more photos seen in iPhoto. I Go back to step 7 and wait 1.5 hours for a rebuild in iPLM.
Any further suggestions would be helpful. This is occurring after EVERY import of new photos. As long as I do not import more photos I can access all events and photos.

    Tony:
It could be that the card has been compromised and iPhoto doesn't recognize it. Open Image Capture and see if you can upload the photos to a folder on the desktop. If that can be done reformat the card with the camera, take a couple of test shots and try again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Missing indexes after system copy

    Hi All
we have around 70,000 missing indexes after the system copy
    offline export from
    source with sun solaris oracle
    To
    Linux oracle
but these appeared after we Run  SGEN , which took 60 hours for a 200 Gb database.
and target system response is also slow , how to go ahead with this issue
we have checked export and import logs , none of the packages were missed
1 Why these missing indexes after SGEN , and why SGEN for 60 hours
2  when we check the Tables which appeared in Missing indexes ,from SE14  it says In Consistency with Data dictionary
3  and the other error , is  Index Missing in the database ,
4  but we cant create all these manually.
    Regards

    Hi Matt
    Thanks for the response
After sap suggestion  , we have done only import again, with 721 R3load same as export.
but still the R3load.exe.log of import shows as done with 720 kernel.
    import R3load.exe log       //bas/720_REL/src/R3ld/R3load/R3ldmain.c#
    export R3load.exe log     //bas/721_REL/src/R3ld/R3load/R3ldmain.c#10 $ SAP
But when we compare  the sapinst_dev and AGR logs both from export and import
both are referring the same 721 R3load version ,
    //bas/721_REL/src/R3ld/R3load/R3ldmain.c
still we have same missing indexes issue , after we did the import again.
Are we making any mistakes in export  , Any suggestions are welcome
hi all , kindly respond with your inputs , on this
    Regards

  • Why can't I open and retrieve my files from iPhoto and my address book after importing the files from my Power mac G5 to my new Mac Pro? I get a warning that says the new OS on my Pro doesn't open files from a Power Mac. Any idea how I can fix this?

Why can't I open and retrieve my files from iPhoto and my Address Book after importing the files from my Power Mac G5 to my new Mac Pro? I get a warning that says the new OS on my Pro doesn't open files from a Power Mac. Any idea how I can fix this?

For your addressbook, export the files to vCard on the PowerMac, then bring them over to your Mac Pro. For your iPhoto, copy the Users -> yourname -> Pictures folder to your Desktop on the Mac Pro, and open iPhoto on the Mac Pro holding the command and option keys.  Select the library file from that Pictures folder and open it.  It should import all the pictures into iPhoto as part of the rebuild process.  Other PowerPC to Intel migration issues are covered here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295

  • After importing pictures they became grey with doted white line around

I have imported pictures (RAW CR2 format) from my camera hundreds of times and they all went well. But this time the only the import worked well (I saw the preview when each picture was imported). Then Iphoto asked if i would like to delete the pictures on the camera after import. I deleted them. But then when I should take a look at the pictures they were grey with doted white lines around all of them. When I chose a picture and check the properties I can see that the pictures use normal space. I tried to drag one picture to a directory in the finder but this didn´t work either. The export doesn't work either. When I scroll fast among the pictures I can see them for a short period but when I stop scrolling they will turn grey with doted white line around. Whats wrong? and how to solve?
    system: iPhoto11 and Lion.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • When iPhoto '11 crashes after importing photos and videos, they are gone. How can I retrieve them?

iPhoto '11 randomly crashes after importing/editing/organizing photos and videos. When it does, photos and videos that I've been working on are gone. Pictures taken with iOS devices can be retrieved if they are still in Photo Stream, but videos are gone. Is there anyway I can retrieve photos and pictures that are not saved before iPhoto crashes? Also, is there anyway to prevent it from crashing? It seems iPhoto '11 is doing this since the day 1 I started using it. Thank you.

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library
this should help with the crashes - it may or may not help with the missing videos
