Rebuilding iPhoto '05 database before upgrading to iPhoto '06 lost images
Because of the bizarre library problems I've been having, I downgraded to iPhoto '05, put my backed-up iPhoto library back in place and had iPhoto '05 rebuild the database.
When I upgraded to iPhoto '06 and my database was converted, I poked around my old film rolls to make sure everything worked. In several instances, I could see thumbnails, but when I tried to view the picture in edit mode, I got a blank screen with a grey X.
I looked in the Originals and Modified folders and confirmed that the photos were gone.
Any idea what could have caused this? I never modify my iPhoto library manually, so I'm fairly sure I didn't bork something myself.
thanks in advance,
-don

I recently upgraded to Mavericks and now don't have access to iphoto. I cannot find my iphoto library to back the photos up before upgrading the iphoto but see the photos when I try to change screensaver? Where are my photos so I can back them up?
The iPhoto library should be in your user folder/Pictures unless it was moved.

i'm getting ready to upgrade to iphoto 11 so i can use photostream. I just don't want to lose my current photos.
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you open iPhoto '11 for the first time, your library will be upgraded in order to be used with iPhoto '11. If this process doesn't finish correctly, you will lose all your photos.
Because of that, the only thing you have to do is to make a backup of your iPhoto library before upgrading. Just open a Finder window, go to the folder where your iPhoto library is (normally, Pictures) and make a copy of it in another folder or drive. With this, you can upgrade safely to iPhoto '11 -
IPhoto library empty after upgrading to iPhoto 9.6
HI,
I have noticed this problem mentioned by others numerous times with no solution that has worked for me. Has a better fix been found other than recopying all of the files in the 'old masters' list into a new library, effectively losing previously created albums, etc.? Is anyone at Apple actually working this issue since it seems to be pretty widespread and apparently directly related to a bug in iPhoto 9.6?.
OK, first, i have no back up iPhoto library. I had one previously but my secondary external drive got full and I had to wipe it to rearrange a bunch of data. Had planned on re-backing it up when I opened iPhoto and uploaded some new photos from my phone, but this event happened and now I am out of luck...
My iPhoto library is stored on an external drive (Wester Digital my Passport for Mac) and has worked fine until yesterday when I plugged my iPhone 6+ in to upload photos and sync with iTunes. Upon booting up iPhoto, I got a notification that I needed to upgrade my library. I clicked on the upgrade function and was then notified that a mistake was found and a repair was necessary. The repair was ongoing when iPhoto froze and entire system failed, giving note that startup disk was nearly full. After doing system restart and opening iPhoto, I found all photos gone from iPhoto window. iPhoto is using the correct library and after looking at all internal files in iPhoto library, I found all photos had been moved to "old masters, old thumbnails, old previews". Files are below:

Size of iPhoto library is still over 500 gigs, so data is there apparently. I immediately backed iPhoto library up, so at least this data has been salvaged, but I still can't access my photos. I have used iPhoto's rebuild functions sequentially all the way to full rebuild, with no photos being found. I then used iPhoto library manager app's rebuild function, and it also revealed no photos.
So, what can I do to sort this out? Needless to say, with 500+ gigs of photos, I am concerned. I am hesitant to do the manual rebuild using the 'old masters' option since I will lose all of my previously organized albums. Is waiting for Apple to issue a fix that will actually restore lost data only a dream or would that feasibly happen? Thanks in advance for any and all help that can be offered.and....
Here is the step by step method to recover your photos into a new Library....
Please read the warning below first.....
The current emergency only workaround fix for this issue when the user hasn't made or doesnt have access to any backups, is as follows....
Quit iPhoto
In Finder, Select iPhoto Library
Control Click on iPhoto Library and choose Show Package
Drag Masters or Old Masters folder to either desktop or external HD if not enough space on System Drive
Delete or preferably move iPhoto Library file to new location so at a later date one can recover the library again if needed..
Restart Mac
Launch iPhoto... (It should then create a new Library automatically...)
Drag and drop the Masters or Old Masters folder(s) onto iPhoto's icon... or use the menu option in iPhoto to import photos and point to the Masters or Old Masters folders saved out previously.
Be patient............
Photos will then be re-added to iPhoto... and added to the new library...
Note: If you have both Masters and Old Masters folders then add them one at a time, letting iPhoto import and index all the photos from one folder before adding another....
Important Warning!!!: All modifications and folder structures/albums from the original library will be lost.... but at least the original photos are rescued... and a new library is created that should be free of issues with the current iPhoto/Yosemite combination. -
Would having several Libraries in iPhoto 08 complicate an upgrade to iPhoto 11?
I have iPhoto 08 running on a 2007 iMAC. I would like to upgrade to iPhoto 11. Others have apparently had problems upgrading iPhoto. It seems if problems occur the solution, from earlier threads, seems to be to rebuild the library, or to down load a Library Manager software and go thru some further process.
I have four iPhoto Libraries - I wonder if the presence of several libraries in iPhoto 08 could complicate an upgrade to iPhoto 11 and if so if there is anything that could be done before the upgrade to reduce the chances of a problem.
ThanksNo. Having multiple libraries has no effect on the upgrade of the applicaiton. They are separate entities. However, be sure you have current backups of those libraries before openning them with iPhoto 9.5 for the first time.
Also since they are iPhoto 7 (08) libraries you'll have to download and run this upgrater on each library before opening them with the new iPhoto: iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1

IPhoto 8.0.2 Upgrade Crashes iPhoto Now !!!
Hi
I used the Software Update to upgrade to iPhoto 8.0.2. Everything went smoothly, except that now when I open iPhoto, after about 20-30 seconds, it hangs..
I have to force quit it every time. I checked Activity Monitor, and the CPU is not being used a lot..its normal and console also doesn't report any activity.
Does anyone else having this problem? Any resolutions ??
-PjI noticed the crashing also and thought it was related to one album which i deleted from Mobileme and Iphoto. THat wasn't it and still crashed. Saw a later post that said to use iphoto library manager and rebuild the library, but I am led to believe this is an apple created problem with the recent software update.
The question is when will we have an acknowledgement and a fix -
References to photos in iPhoto library fail after upgrading to iPhoto 08
When I upgraded to iPhoto 08, I wasn't aware of the change that made the library a package. I have a database file that contains references to photos in the iPhoto library. (Some of) the references don't work anymore (presumably because the upgrading changed the location of the photos). Also, when adding a new photo, I cannot enter the library, since it is now a package (and adding a picture's reference must be from within the database's adding dialogue window; a reference cannot be added manually). Is there either a way to make the iPhoto library package contents permanently visible? Or is there another way to make the references work again?
APJMS
Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.
Depending on the particular database package you use, drag and drop from either the iPhoto Window or a media browser (You can create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS) may work.
Also, for 10.5 users: If you use the extended Open or Attach dialogue (with Column View) you can scroll to the bottom of the Shortcuts and find the Media browser there. Select any pic you want from there.

IPhoto quits unexpectedly after upgrading from iPhoto 7.1.5 to 9.2.1
I upgraded directly from iPhoto 7.1.5 to 9.2.1 via the App Store in Lion.
After launching iPhoto for the first time the application starts to rebuild the library. About 5 minutes later it quits and reports an "iPhoto quit unexpectedly" error. I tried simple solutions like restarting and repairing the disk permissions but still get the same error
The following is a copy of the log after iPhoto quits during the library rebuild process:

Upgraded to iPhoto '11 and all photos gone!
Upgraded to iPhoto '11 this evening from iPhoto '09 and all my photos were showing up as blanks. All my events were there and the photo outlines with the correct meta data were all there. But the photos themselves were all blank with a triangle with exclamation point in them.
The Photo Library still showed 44GB in size so I knew it was all there somewhere but nothing was rendering. Tried holding down option/command and rebuilding but that didn't help.
I finally opened up Terminal and went into the photo library and found something that was definitely not right. First the Originals directory now seemed to be a symlink to a new Masters directory and that directory was empty! I also saw a bunch of new "Old ..." directories in there for example "Old Masters". And guess what, inside the Old Masters directory were all my photos!
So I moved all those directories inside Old Masters into Masters and started iPhoto again. All my photos are still blank but if I actually double click on a picture to look at it, it shows up this time instead of the triangle with ! point in it.
I've now restarted iPhoto with option/command and am waiting for the thumbnails to rebuild. It's now taking much longer to rebuild (compared to the first time I tried the trick) and it still has not finished the rebuild process. I'm hoping once this is complete that I'll be back in business.
Looks like Apple was doing some cleaning as part of the upgrade and for some reason, it did not finish it properly. We'll see if I'm back after this rebuild.Note, here's the sequence of events in my case:
1. Bought new iMac from Apple store
2. Copied iphoto library onto external HFS+ sata disk (~44GB in size) from my old mac's internal disk
3. Copied iphoto library from external HFS+ sata disk onto iMac internal disk
4. Ran iPhoto on iMac and it did some upgrading, etc and then came up just fine
5. Read up on the features for iPhoto '11 on Apple's website and discovered I didn't have some of the new features
6. Discovered in About iPhoto menu that I was actually running iPhoto '09 which was the default installed on my brand new iMac
7. Found that iPhoto '11 was on a DVD that came with my iMac but not pre-installed
8. Used the DVD to upgrade to iLife '11 (iPhoto '11)
9. Launched iPhoto but it did not launch saying I must run an upgrade first using Software Update
10. Launched Software Update and it found iPhoto v9.1.
11. Upgraded to it.
12. Re-launched iPhoto.
13. Started upgrading my photo library
14. Took a long time but finally finished
15. Library came up but with blank thumbnails and blank pictures with a ! triangle in them if you open the photo; but all meta data is correct
16. Ran Get Info on iPhoto Library and saw that it was still the right size (~44GB)
17. Used Terminal to go into the iPhoto Library and saw there was an Old Masters directory which contained all my photos still (hopefully)
At this point tried reading all sorts of forum posts and blogs and found nothing that worked. All pointed to upgrading to 9.0.1 and unfortunately I'm already on 9.1 as part of the software update above. Tried rebuilding, repairing, everything. Nothing works. Eventually copied out the Old Masters into my home directory and created a brand new iPhoto Library and imported everything back in. Just hoping I did not lose any of my photos but I definitely lost all the events and books (obviously).
I have some backups but they are a few months old unfortunately. And I did not even think to back up before upgrading to iPhoto '11 since I have never had an issue with an Apple iPhoto upgrade in the past. Sigh -
Just upgraded to iPhoto 11 and have a major problem!
Can anyone assist me please. I have just purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 and once I loaded it and tried to organise my photo collection, the system informed me that my iPhoto needed to be upgraded to iPhoto 11.
I purchased the upgrade and when I loaded Adobe PSE9 'Organiser' I received an error message box which states that I have an
e-licenser Control Error. Specifically it states that 'Halion Sonic 1.x M6' has caused the following error:
elicenser(s) contains no valid license for this application.
It then gives me the following options:
- For Trouble shooting options click 'Help'
- Click <Licences> to view available licenses
- Connect a valid eLicenser and click <retry>
- Click <cancel> to abort.
I do have an elicense for Halion products that I use with Cubase 6. I am not sure why a software for my music studio should conflict with PSE9 and prevent the software from organising my photographs from iPhoto.
Even if I remove the Adobe software from my iMAC the iPhoto 11 upgrade will not load any of my photos that were originally on the system
Please can anyone offer me some advice as I have tried all of the above options without success.
StrummerleeYour question is not clear
Can anyone assist me please. I have just purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 and once I loaded it and tried to organise my photo collection, the system informed me that my iPhoto needed to be upgraded to iPhoto 11.
How were you organizing your photo collection? You are aware that make any changes to the content or structure of the iPhoto library will corrupt your library and cause data loss
As to informing you that you needed to upgrade to iPhoto '11 - I do not believe that that ever happens - you may be notified that your library has been upgraded and you need an upgrade - this can be caused by library corruption (like moving or modifying files within the iPhoto library using the finder or a program other than iPhoto) - I'm not clear but it could possibly be related to your organizing your photos
You then go into s discussion of PSE9, Halion and Cubase 6 - all not Apple products and not iPhoto related - hat questions would best be addressed in the support forums for those products
Even if I remove the Adobe software from my iMAC the iPhoto 11 upgrade will not load any of my photos that were originally on the system
this depends on exactly what you did to "organize" your photos - I'm guessing that you have destroyed your iPhoto library and will have to start over but need more information to be sure
Do you have a backup of your iPhoto library from just before you "organized" your photos?

Carbonite backing my iphoto library again after upgrading to ilife 11
I have Carbonite online backup and have my system backed up. Since upgrading to iLife 11, Carbonite wants to back up my system again thinking everything it backup already is new files/data. This want Carbonite support saids,"we have reviewed the log files and found that duplicate files are being backed up. As the iLife program has changed the My photo and video directories. These are being backed up again. We would suggest you make changes to the settings of iLife program, so that Carbonite does not recognize it as a new data. " My question, want setting am I changing so carbonite doesn't duplicate my back up? it wants to upload 137 gig of data (again) it will take for ever! Thank you for any help.
I also have Carbonite. Before upgrading to iPhoto '11, I divided my library into multiple smaller libraries just so my computer didn't seem so taxed. I have Carbonite in case my computer crashes or is stolen. After doing all this maneuvering of libraries and then the upgrade to '11, my Carbonite was going bonkers.... it even sent me an email saying I hadn't backed up in over a week. I don't know why I got that email. But, I think that Carbonite finally caught up somewhat to my moving around of files and then upgrading to iPhoto '11.
I think I prefer the concept of taking an external HD or two (making one or two additional copies of my libraries).... and, maybe telling Carbonite to not back-up those libraries (the ones that I don't actively use right now) until my Carbonite has caught up on my actively used libraries. Then, once it says that you are caught up, you can one by one add those unused libraries back to your "back-up" to catch any additional changes you may make on those libraries in the future. This way, your current changes are for sure being captured on your Carbonite back-up.
I don't know if this makes sense. And, perhaps your usage is different than mine. But, I had over 14,000 photos in my single library. Now, I have 9 libraries with up to 4,500 in a single library. I only actively use one library right now. And, will be making sure that one is on my back-up with Carbonite. Then, once that is done, I will add the other 8 libraries one by one until they are all updated all the while making sure my primary is being captured as well. But, if something does happen between now and then, I have my external HD with copies of my iPhoto library at least until Carbonite is all the way caught up. -
I upgraded to iPhoto 11.
When I connect my iPhone 4 to iTunes the events and photos show zero data. It's says I'm synced to another version of iPhoto. I previously upgrade from iPhoto 09. Can somebody please help. I enjoyed changing my pics on a frequent basis.
and now all my old photos are missing......where did they go!!!!!!!!
Unless you actually give us some information any answer is a totally wild guess
Exactly how did you upgrade, did you backup first (it is always critical to backup and even more crtitical to ahve a good backup anytuime you do an upgrade), what version of iPhoto did you have, what do yu see now, any more information that might actually someone give you assistance
why did i upgrade...
only you can answer this - my wild guess is that you wnated teh features of the new version
i want my pictures back
probably not a problem but you need to do your part and tell us what is going on

Trying to open old iPhoto library on osx 10.9.5 with iPhoto 9.5.1. iPhoto says I must upgrade but upgrade eventually hangs. Tried to rebuild/repair database but it always says you have to upgrade database first and eventually hangs
What version was the old library made with?
What is the exact message? when it hangs does it crash or do you have to force quit?

Library can't upgrade to iPhoto '11, can't rebuild Library either.
After recently installing iLife '11, my iPhoto Library became unusable. When I OK'd iPhoto to "upgrade" my library, it started the process and then presented an error message "iPhoto is unable to open this Library".
I couldn't rebuild the Library either. So I was able to "downgrade" back to iPhoto '09 and restored my Library from an older backup (a couple days old). I simply moved iPhoto '11 to the desktop, deleted iPhoto prefs, and reinstalled iPhoto '09 from disc. My intention was to use iPhoto '09 to rebuild the library and then upgrade again. After reinstalling iPhoto '09, I can open my iPhoto library just fine. Appears to be normal. However, when I try to "rebuild" the library, iPhoto instantly quits. No error messages or anything. Just quits.
I downloaded iPhoto Library Manager hoping that it may allow me to rebuild the library. When I try to do that, it prompts me to use iPhoto 9.0 ('11) to upgrade the library before I rebuild. It appears that my Mac (at least iPhoto Library Manager) still thinks iPhoto 9.0 ('11) is installed. I'm positive that iPhoto 8.1 is installed, and that's what's in my Applications folder. That's what is successfully opening my iPhoto library. Any ideas on how I can rebuild this Library in '09 so that I can try to "upgrade" again?
Running on new iMac with 10.6.4 installed.Just wanted to chime in to this as I ran into the same issue, and these boards have been a great resource in the past.
Here's what I attempted to do that didn't fix the issue;
- Tried to rebuild the library from iPhoto '11 (CMD+Option) when opening the program, which failed with the exact same error as OSO - Mac was mentioning above.
- Reverted back to iPhoto '09 (deleted iPhoto '11 from /Applications/, as well as deleted any reference to iPhoto in /Library/Receipts; I saw no references but took that suggestions from a previous thread here), then reinstalled iPhoto '09 via original discs. I was able to open the library as I wanted (pulled a library from a few days ago in a Time Machine backup to be safe), then attempted to rebuild in hopes that would help issue. Reinstalled iPhoto '11, but the same issue occurred.
Here's what I attempted to do that somewhat fixed the issue;
- Option-clicked to open iPhoto '11, then chose to create a new library. Created a new library (I named mine iPhoto2) in the ~/Pictures/ folder. Closed iPhoto. Then I navigated to the ~/Pictures/ folder, right-clicked on the original iPhoto library that won't open, as well as the newly created iPhoto library that does open (but lacks any content), and choose to Show Contents. I manually copied all the contents of the original iPhoto library to the new iPhoto library (some folders and files overwrote, some did not; note that the structure of the iPhoto '11 library is radically different than that of the iPhoto '09 library) and then re-opened iPhoto. iPhoto prompted me to upgrade the library again (peculiar since the library technically was created in iPhoto '11, but I guess it saw elements of the iPhoto '09 structure) and successfully upgraded the library. The only downside was that, for whatever reason, certain photos did not come back and were blatantly missing thumbnails and originals. But my album structure, faces, etc. remained intact.
What I did that finally fixed the issue;
- Brought back my good library from a Time Machine backup, then right-clicked on it within ~/Pictures/ and chose Get Info. I manually set permissions for everyone on my machine (admin, staff, everyone, and myself) to Read & Write. Option-clicked when opening iPhoto, forced it to look for my newly-permissioned library, and viola, upgraded without issue and no lost photos.
Not sure if my solution will work for all, and my apologies for providing such information that isn't so concrete, but since these are user-to-user forums, I thought I'd offer my experience as I was not able to locate any other solutions without entirely losing my album structure, faces data, etc. -
I'm using iPhoto 11, and instead of seeing my images in the main view, I see only outlines. (Had same problem in iPhoto 10 before upgrade to Lion Help!
I'm on a Macbook Pro and all of my software is up-to-date.
The photos and events, etc. appear to be present in my photo library, but I cannot see the actual images--only an outlined placeholder.Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails. This can take 3 or 4 goes to work.
