Rebuilding iPhoto database and missing files

Heya,
I got a corrupt iPhoto6 database after a power failure (but had a backup) while travelling. I didnt have the backup drive handy(was far away), so I kept adding new files to this corrupt database. I also began making modifications.
Now I want the two together and keep all the modifications too. I foolishly thought I could: add to the backup the new "rolls" with the Originals and Modified folders and then rebuild the database.
Why 'rebuilding the database' doesnt involve scanning through these two directories I don't know, because this doesnt work. I thought maybe the permissions were wrong, but that doesnt seem to be it.
So what the best way - while retaining the modifications Ive made to my new rolls - to add everything back to the Master/non-corrupted database. A Merge with iPhoto Library Manager? Could a rebuilt with it work(Looks like no, since it only scans the xml file).
cheers,
matt
Intel Mac mini Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Matt:
Here's what I think is your only option to retain some of the modifications that are in the library and get all of your photos back.
1 - create a new library.
2 - with the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager copy all of the albums and rolls from the current library into the new one. This will retain your rolls and albums, keywords, and comments but not slideshows, books, etc.
3 - copy the Originals folder from the current library to the desktop.
4 - drag the Originals folder into the open iPhoto window. You should get a window asking if you want to import duplicates or not - select not.
That will give you the closest you can get to what you had before the crash with the after crash modifications.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Rebuilding iPhoto library changes .mov files to raw

I rebuilt my iPhoto library and since then any .mov files (specifically MJPEG) were changed to RAW in the info panel. The files haven't been changed, but if you try to view them, they small thumbnails are intact, but expanded are a triangular icon with an exclamation point. If I locate the original file and reimport it, it fixes the problem for that individual problem, but this is a tedious solution. MP4 files and H264 files were not affected. I have not been able to locate any information for a solution. Is there a way to force iphoto to change the file format so that it properly recognize that it is a video file, not an image file?
    Snow Leopard, iPhoto 9.1.5

Why do you think they've become Raw?
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Cannot Rebuild iphoto Library - empty xml file

I keep my photos on an external hard drive - and last night i accidentally disconnected the hard drive while i was using iPhoto. iPhoto quit automatically as the library it was using vanished.
When i tried to restart the library after reconnecting the hard drive iPhoto is showing that there are no photos and no events. I checked the package contents and the photos (7000+) are all still there.
So i tried to rebuild the library using iphoto library manager after reading some other similar posts. Unfortunately, iPhoto library manager tells me that the library cannot be rebuilt as the xml file is empty.
Please don't tell me that i have to recreate this library - i had 100+ albums, dozens of web galleries, multiple calendars, etc. and i just can't bear the thought of losing all those hours of work. Please tell me there is another solution!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Are you sure iPhoto is pointing at the right library?
hold down the option (or alt) key when launching iPhoto. Select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the library on the disk.
If that fails, then you won't have to recreate all the library - just restore your back up.
You do have a back up, don't you?
    Otherwise:
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • I try to print a thumbnail from within iPhoto and it keeps telling me I don't have any themes installed. When I look in iPhoto folder the themes folder is there. Themes are in app. Support also. I rebuilt iPhoto database and rebooted but no cure. DICKSTER

Try to print from within iPhoto a thumbnail & I get message that there are no themes installed. They are in iPhoto folder and a folder of themes is in the library/ application support. I rebuilt iPhoto data base using iPhoto rebuild. No change, also rebooted hd.
Can someone straighten me out here?
    Thanks

    Restoring iPhoto 9 (11) Themes
First look in your HD/Library/Application Support/iPhoto folder for a Themes folder. If there is one there move it to the Trash. Also look in your Home/Library/Application Support/iPhoto folder for a Themes folder.  If there is one move it to the Trash.  Reinstall iPhoto as described below:
1 - delete the current application.
2 -files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
3 - mount the disk that iPhoto 11 came on, either an iLife 11 disc or the system disk that came with your computer and do a custom install selecting only iPhoto.
If iPhoto 11 came with the computer then double click on the "Install Bundled Software Only" file and do a custom install.
Apply all of the latest iPhoto 9 (11) updates followed by a repair of disk permissions with Disk Utility. Also make sure you're running the latest Quicktime version.

  • IPhoto 08 and Deleting Files

I recently upgraded from iLife 06 to ILife 08 and having major problems with new version of *IPhoto 08.* First and foremost, messages began showing that my startup disk is almost full and to delete unwanted files. I'm assuming this is happening because of ILife 08 installation including SuperDuper and Lacie external hard drive. No matter, before doing any installations I did massive backups to external hard drive and cds. Once ILife 08 was installed, I began deleting unwanted pictures within *_IPhoto Library via the Finder_* including File browser when I had Photoshop open. Unbeknownst to me, this is not recommended due to possible corruption of IPhoto. OK, apparent this is happening because when I go to IPhoto there are blank photos when I do a full screen.
My question is what is the best way to delete ALL originals and duplicates of older iphoto 06 pictures including other unwanted pictures in current IPhoto 08 Library? Will I have to uninstall IPhoto 08 then go into my finder and start deleting pictures like I used to do whenever I wanted to delete files? Of course, even then I always had blank photos within IPhoto.
BTW, with ILife 08 installed, I have deleted (trashed) all sorts of applications such as iMovie, and iDVD to free up space. This has made barely any difference. My main criteria is to delete HUGE pictures no longer needed in my IPhoto 06 (or rather IPhoto 08 too) Library Folders. Also considering I'm tapped with my current disk space, currently unable to download any programs such as duplicate annihilator, etc.
Hope this isn't to confusing. Any help overwhelmingly appreciated!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Let's get this out of the way:
Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
The way to delete pics from iPhoto is to do it in the iPhoto Window. Drag the pics from the Library to the iPhoto trash. iPhoto Menu -> Empty the trash.
Deleting a pic here or there is not going to make a difference to your HD space? How big are these pics? 2 - 5 mb if they're from a point and shoot camera, 10 - 15 from a dslr? Why not move your library to the external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
As you've been mucking about in the iPhoto Library Folder then you'll need to start over and create and populate a new library:
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop

Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.

In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    To use Photoshop with iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Old Toad? -- Rebuild iPhoto Library and lose NOTHING!

    Hi,
Any help will be very much appreciated (I'm particularly hoping the old toad will be hopping over to this thread)...
I'm running iPhoto 6 and have been using iPhoto since version 3.0. I have a library of about 10,000 photos which I have meticulously organised and catalogued. I don't use albums, but eveything is organised by film rolls and every photo has keywords (names of those photographed, which I access via smart-albums), ratings, comments, and titles.
My iPhoto library, though working perfectly, is a complete mess. I can manually see dozens of duplicates (often whole folders) and it's driving me barmy...
In iTunes, I can simply copy all of my music files to a backup disc, delete all iTunes related stuff from my HD, then re-import. I lose star ratings, albums and playcounts but my careful cataloguing is preserved and I have a pristine library.
I have a feeling that old versions of iPhoto didn't allow such re-importing. How about now? Is there a way to just save the photo files, trash everything, and re-import. What would be lost? It would be a disaster of epic proportions if I lost (a) titles, (b) comments, (c) *most importantly* keywords...
I don't care about albums, and smart albums are easy to re-create. Is what I am suggesting possible?
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve.

    Steven:
The _2 is generated when a photo with the same name is added to a roll that already has a file by that name. If your camera has the option to turn off resetting the numbering process on each new set of photos I suggest you do so. That will avoid duplicate image file issues that can crop up when trying to export photos to a folder.
As far as the duplicates, the thumbnails don't take up much room and the modified files are only when you edit one. If you want to regain that space just do a Revert to Original and the modified file will be deleted. Many of the modified files are portrait orientated images that have been taken by a camera with the auto-rotate option. There's no way around it unless you turn off the option, upload to the desktop and then physically rotate with a 3rd party application before importing into iPhoto.
What with the low cost of external FW hard drives these days it's not expensive to have a decent sized backup drive that you can store older or not immediately needed photos in a separate library and then use iPhoto Library Manager to move between the two and copy photos between them without losing the keywords, comments, etc. Or you can use iPhoto in its alias mode with the source files on the external HD and only a very small library folder on your boot drive. I have 27,000 image files on my external HD and the library folder for it is only 1.7G. See these Tutorials for more about the alias type of library.,

  • Lots of *filename*_edTMP and missing files in PSE10

    Hi,
I'm running a trial of PSE10 Premier on my Windows 7 64bit laptop with a 2ghz processor and 4GB of RAM. All my images are stored in C:\Users\Public\Pictures\ then sub folders.
In several batches I've imported about 7500 pictures. As each batch was imported from the folder I did some basic tagging, country, name of trip etc. At some point I did a "write keyword tag and properties info to photos". At some point later I noticed a pop up box about missing files and that some pictures have a question mark on them.
I had a dig in the folder where the picture should be and the image that was named P1000973 is now named P1000973_edTMP-1. This prompted me to search for all files that end _edTMP-* and there are 3767. Some of them, 41, have a file size that is what I would expect for the image and some of them have no file size,3726.
I'm hoping someone can advise what's going on .... how to resolve it .... and if this is likely to happen on my next import?
I'd rather expected that an Adobe product wouldn't have these types of problems, luckily for me I haven't paid for the product.
I've had a dig through the forum and I can see various users reporting the same issue for previous versions of PSE but not 10.

    Hi,
    Hi,
    Now my queries are
    1) What is cause behind the generation of these files?
These file are generated due to the trace level that you have set in your system for the Java. All the action performed in the JAVA is recorded in these files.
    2) What are parameters which governs the size of these files?
Goto Visual Admin and then ServerNode then services then Log Configurator from here you can enable more trace as per your requirment.
    3) Suggestions to reduce the generation as well as size of these files.
If you want you can reduce the trace in the Log Configuration.

  • Qmaster and Missing files

    Hi all!
I have a small Qmaster queue up and running (surprisingly) for Final Cut Pro 5.1. It runs smoothly most of the time, but when a user submits a job with a missing file, each node pops a window asking if you would like to reconnect the media or to continue. These windows stay on the system and block the node from doing any further work until I find out about the problem, and clear the pop up window.
I'd like to know if there is a way to block these windows from popping up by choosing a default "continue" behavior, or better yet to error out. I looked through all the prefs and couldn't really come up with anything.
Any other ideas on how to get around this problem? I've trained the users to preflight their files, but this is going to pop up no matter how many times I hit them over the head. Thanks!
    ~half.italian

I agree. It would be. But when you are dealing with many different users, mistakes happen occasionally. A mistake in this case means any node that picked up the job is hung until someone clicks a little pop up window on each of the nodes.
I understand where you are coming from, but it's my job to make sure the nodes are always running properly. I can't ultimately control whether a user submits a job with a piece of media local to the machine unless I stand in each of the rooms at all times.
The only way I can see to guarantee that the nodes don't get hung up for this problem is to figure out a way for the system to deal with a missing file when and if it occurs.
