Rebuilding Library ??

The situation is that I sold my Mac and copied my iTunes music folder onto a hard drive along with photos and movies etc.
New Mac Pro has arrived and I will be using an ssd for boot & apps with all the data on, lets say hard drive A in bay #3. iPhoto works great - I hold the option key down when I open iPhoto and am prompted to select one of several photo libraries.
However - no such option when trying to do the same for iTunes music folder. I can go into hard drive A residing in bay # 3 and navigate to a specific song and it plays fine - but no library, no playlists, etc.
How do I create an iTunes library that resides on a different drive than my boot & apps drive?
Thanks in advance.

the iTunes music folder is what I copied
that contains all your media files. what it doesn't contain are the library and .xml files. the iTunes library file is the database that holds information such as playcounts, rating, playlist information. click here for more details.
Now that all is working (have to re do playlists - no big thing though) what do I drag from my iTunes on the boot/apps drive to my other drive? This is another one of those things that I don't keep straight in my mind for some reason.
see above. also, peruse this KB article in case you come across the .xml file.

Iphoto won't display photos or run a slideshow - just a black screen. Can't see photos to edit etc. Thumbnails all OK and all else seems visible in the usual way etc. Tried rebuilding library and reset Mac Air but no result.  Ideas please!!!!

and was told to go home and rebuild the photo library (there are 2257 photos). Did this but problem is still there.
When you rebuild the library did you rebuild the database?  Also did you repair the library's permissions? Is this the First Aid window that you got?
Those are the two options to use.
Here's another fix you can try:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
You'll have to recreate your slideshow after using this method.

  • I'm trying to find a way to move pictures from Preview to iPhoto. Tried "rebuilding  library"...nothing happens.  Help!

I'm trying to find a way to move pictures from Preview to iPhoto. Tried "rebuilding  library"...nothing happens.  Pictures ssomehow wound up in Preview after I needed to do a clean install (Snow Leopard) and moved files from an external drive. Help!

If you saw the images with Preview in the other iPhoto Library, than try to open iPhoto with that Library:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2505
If the Photos are there, replace the iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder with the one from the external.  (posted by Keith)
    My response:
The pictures don't appear in Preview in the other user account.  They also don't appear in the external drive (!!!????).  I discovered I can get the pictures into iPhoto by saving from Preview to the desktop, then importing into iPhoto, but only one at a time.
Clearly the files are on the hard drive somewhere, but where?  The  'iPhoto library" icon that appears in my Pictures folder is a "package" which can't be opened on it's own....it's only able to be  imported into Preview.
This feels like the Twilight Zone to me.....

  • Photo disappear after rebuilding library

    Hi all,
It's very sad thing to happen on x'mas.. hope i can get some help here.
I don't know what cause the problem... so i'd better describe everything i've done.
My friend sent me some photos in his iphone to my email.
I then saved all those photos on my iphone.
I've checked them on camera roll after downloading..and it still works.
then i load the app "Polarize", and try to load the photos from camera roll.
Then it said there's no photos..
so then i went back to photo... it then started to "updating library" / rebuilding library...
then i waited... after rebuild...several hundreds of photos are gone...
I tried to restart...and they are still gone...
Since my laptop has taken to maintenance, it hasn't been backed up for a while now...
    Please kindly suggest any solution...

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a  backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • IPhoto rebuilding library freezes

Two days ago I was sending images from iPhoto over Messages. I sent about 50 images fine in groups of ten. When sending the last four (or five?) images the images stayed on the top of all other applications. I quit iPhoto and the images stayed visible. I shutdown all applications (quit, not force quit) and rebooted my MBP. When I started iPhoto again all my images were gone. I shutdown iPhoto and tried the option+command key sequence when starting iPhoto. The first two options, "repair permissions" and "rebuild thumbnails", did nothing. The third option, repair database, returned my images but lost all my "faces". When I choose "rebuild database" my MBP freezes when iPhoto reaches the "restoring faces" step.
A few weeks ago I had a freezing problem that eventually turned out to be some software (Sierra Wireless) while "cleaning up" my MBP. I haven't removed any software recently. This freezing seems to be isolated to iPhoto.
    - I have moved "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist" and "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist.lockfile" out of the way.
    - I have deleted/uninstalled iPhoto from Applications and reinstalled from the AppStore.
    - I have downloaded "iPhoto Library Manager", but have not tried it yet.
    What to try next?
    Mike

    - Photos was unchecked in iCloud preferences
    - moved iLifeAsset Management out of the way
    - booted
    - started iPhoto with option+control, selected "rebuild library" (fourth option)
    - iPhoto hung again when "restoring faces"
    - I had top(8) running:

  • "Rebuild Library" option leads to external editor problems

Due to an issue with the Aperture internal tray I used the option "rebuild library". After the rebuild is completed it is not possible to open the images with an external editor or plugin anymore.
The message says that the image could not be handled as it has an unsupported format. Sorry, I cannot post the exact message as I use the german version of Aperture.
After getting the old Aperture library from my backup I tried it again. Before "rebuild library" everything works fine (except for the tray), after the rebuild I receive the message.

My affected images are masters inside the library and referenced ones - that doesn't matter. Images imported after the faulty rebuild work as usual. But it is still not possible to edit the older ones - those imported before the crash and rebuild. I couldn't find a workaround until now, except exporting and reimporting every single master, adjusting everything new and edit this new one with a plugin or the external editor.
I tried to export a project as a whole and reimport it, it dosen't change anything. If I open the package of the aplibrary I see that the TIFF or PSD is created by the command "edit in external editor" and I can open this in photoshop, but Aperture isn't able to hand it over to the external editor or the plugin. It seems to be a database problem not a problem of image rendering.
I also tried to rebuild the library again and repaired the user permissions of the database (CMD ALT during aperture start) - Doesn't help.
I imported an affected mediabase into another Aperture installation on my notebook which was not affected before. But the imported images inside the project won't open with the external editor or any plugin too. So I think it has nothing to do with the general installation of Aperture. For sure it is an error inside the database caused by the automatic rebuild of the database after a crash.
For all aperture users I can give the following two hints:
    1) Backup your Aperture database carefully.
    2) After a crash of Aperture and an automatic or any other rebuild of the database, check FIRST if your database is infected by our problem. Open some images with a plugin or the external editor. If this doesn't work, go back to your vault version.
My mistake was to backup RIGHT AFTER the crash, without checking everything including the external editor command. Because of this I infected my vault version with the error too.....
Apple is needed for solving this issue. It should be possible for the programmers to find the error inside an exported project/mediabase, which is affected with the problem. I would provide such a file to Apple for examination.

  • Missing videos after automatically "rebuilding library"

I took a bunch of photos and videos during xmas, and yesterday I wanted to take a picture and I got the message "rebuilding library". At the end of this I noticed my imovie project was missing videos and everything was in wrong order.
I am abroad during xmas and dont have access to a pc. I am worried I have lost a lot of my footage. Can anyone help me. Is there a recovery software or anything??
Just to clarify, I didnt ask it to rebuild my library. It just did it automatically when I accessed my camera roll.

    File -> New Smart Album
    Photo -> is -> Movie
will find all the movies in your Library.

  • Beachballing, rebuild library and Javascript issues

I have constant beachballing in Aperture 3.03. I went to Aperture help to find out how to rebuild library and am told I need Javascript to read Help answers. What I get in Help is not clickable. How do I get/install Javascript for Aperture and how do I rebuild the library. I am hoping this will cure the constant beachballing.

    Hi Birgit (lovely name!),
as to rebuild the library did you already try to launch Aperture pressing the option+cmd keys?
This should force the Aperture First Aid Window where you can choose to repair permissions, repair and rebuild library.
If you didn't, give it a try...press and keep pressing on option (is the key marked with 'alt')+cmd keys and click on the Aperture application icon to launch it...do not release the keys and the First Aid screen should open.
    Hope this helps you!
    Bye!

  • Creative Zen Micro - Freezes when 'Rebuilding Library', does this spontaneous

I'll make this post short and sweet.
Yes, I have read the FAQ.
I'm just wondering, its happened to me twice now that when i turn on my zen micro, it goes straight to the rebuilding library screen, and when the bar gets to the end it just freezes. Replacing the battery does not help. Only until i attach it to my computer at home does the library finish rebuilding. And no, on both occasions the battery was not dead. I just found out now about recovery mode and disk cleanup.
Now, considering this disk cleanup fixes the problem next time it arrises, why is this problem happening in the first place? How can I avoid it from happening?
I'll probably be returning this product if I'm forced to replace the battery etc each time i want to use it.
    Sorry for my broken english

I have had a very similar problem with my 5GB Zen Micro. I have not added music to the player in weeks but during a cold boot a couple of times a week the player will not start clean, many times hanging at the end of a library rebuild.
The player is always shutdown orderly, though most of the time it's via the 4 hour firmware shutdown included in the ..0 firmware. Each time it hangs I boot to rescue mode, run a clean-up, then reboot. During the reboot it always runs a successful rebuild, so I wonder, why didn't it do that last time and why does it keep acting up when nothing has been added or deleted to the player?
One additional note, sometimes during the boot it will hang with the ZEN screen only partially displayed.
I just deleted the firmware and reloaded ..0. Hopefully this fixes it, but stay tuned for updates...
    Thanks,Doug

  • Player stuck on rebuilding library.

My MP3 player is stuck on rebuilding library and has been for the past 2 hours. It also is not being recognized by my computer if I try to plug it in.

It wasn't even plugged in to my usb cable when it started doing rebuilding library. Not exactly sure why it started doing it.... I just turned it on and it went to rebuilding library and stopped there. Someone told me to try and see if I could plug it in and do anything with it and it my computer won't recognize it.
Yeah I have all my songs saved on my computer but I don't know how I can format my player since the thing isn't even being recognized.

my iphone 4 is "rebuilding library" and doesnt finish. It just keeps telling me to launh photos, i need help! i dont want to lose all of my photos!

Put it into DFU mode - hold the sleep/wake button and home button until the screen goes black (ignoring the slide to turn off slider). When the screen goes black release the sleep/wake button but hold the home button. Continue holding the home button for 10 seconds, then release it. The screen should stay black. Plug it into iTunes and it should come up with this message "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. It must be restored before use", that's when it is successfully in DFU mode. Now press the restore button in iTunes and it should run smoothly :)

  • Photos previously deleted from iPhoto, cannot rebuild library on new iMac

I purchased a new iMac and restored from Time Machine.   In the past, I moved some photos from my previous imac to store on a hard drive.  In iphoto, the thumbnails were still present but could not open (message:  cannot find file).  I lived with this because I knew where I could find them if I wanted them.
Now, when I first open iphoto it tries to rebuild the library.  I get the error message for every single one of these photos (hundreds), asking if I want to cancel or find photo.
I there some way I can resolve this without clicking on hundreds of error messages?  When I did this, eventually iphoto closed and I had to start all over again.
Thank you for you help.  My new iMac is running Mountain Lion.

Is sound like the original files for those many thumbnails are gone.  Try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If that doesn't give you a good library you can try this:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
The library will contain all of the orignal files that are in your current library.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • How long to rebuild library

    Hi y'all
How long does a rebuild library take for a 150gb library?
I suspect that it is just hung... has been over 24 hours and activity monitor reports Aperture is doing nothing.
I've had the library for about 2 years and to my recollection i've never rebuilt the library.
I'm on an 2.8ghz iMac 24" (the latest one) with 10.5.1 installed.
Yes, i backed up my library to another drive before trying the rebuild.

Thanks for your detailed instructions Thomas
interestingly enough, i killed the Aperture app and was off to start the process you suggested. I noticed that the drive that i'd backed up to was unmounted. So i tried to remount it and it wouldn't show up on my desktop. I relaunched the finder and it didn't show up then either - so i decided a reboot was necessary. I tried a restart, but iTunes kept automatically restarting, even if i killed it - which prevented the restart from happening. So i did the hard power down and restarted my iMac that way. First thing i did was launch Aperture - and low and behold, it is rebuilding my library.
Something was stuck in the guts of the OS somewhere and now it seems free.
I will consider tho what to do about the size of the library and possibly moving some older stuff off to different libraries.

  • IBooks won't rebuild library when dialog box requires that I rebuild

When I open iBooks in OSX 10.9 Mavericks, a dialog box appears saying my library could not be located.  It gives the option to 1) Quit, 2) Try Again, and 3) Rebuild Library.
    Selecting Quit quits iBooks
Selecting Try Again immediately pops up the same dialog box
Selecting Rebuild quits iBooks.  There is no crash log that appears (otherwise I would have posted it here)...it just quits.
I am able to see my iBooks library files buried in my HD in the correct location.
