"Rebuilding photo library then it shuts off"

I have an iPhone 3gs. My camera on it was working fine. Then, yesterday I tried to open it up to take a picture and it says "Please wait, updating library" and then there is a little blue bar and underneath it, it says "rebuilding library". When the blue bar is just over half way across the screen it just crashes, and goes back to my homescreen.
I've read the restoring it wont help, and I don't want to do that and have to lose my most recent pictures. How do I fix this? I've tried updating and troublshooting...nothing helps. Its a bummer because I used my camera all the time.

Hey Tobbe123,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues with your MacBook Pro. The following resource may provide a solution:

    Hi everyone,
I was playing games on my 3gs the other day and then it shut off randomly and the screen slowly faded away the battery was at about 70%
now it will just turn off randomly without warning unless plug into a power source and wont turn on after shutting off unless plugged in
I have tried restoring it, putting it in a dehumidifier and also charging overnight
I have tried to drain the battery but it wont work because it will shut down whilst i am draining the battery
One time today i turned it off and left it for a few hours, the battery was 89% but when i turned it back on a few hours late it showed the plug into power sign
It charged to about 33% and then a few mins later it went up to 100%
Could this be a battey percentage sensor problem?
It anyone has an idea of what might be going on please tell me, it would be greatly apreciated
Also: i am on ios 5.1.1 and NOT jailbroken
    Thanks

I had major issues with the iPhone 4s battery, however it’s resolved.
The tech who set the phone up at the Apple store did so with little training.
if you have a mobile me account. First go and move all your data to the cloud by going on your computer and logging in at me.com/move. The cloud has replaced mobile me, so there is no need for those two accounts
Also make sure that for any of your email accounts you set them up to fetch, not push. My tech person set them all to have the email servers push data to the phone. The new iphone4s antenna is extremely strong so it will continually try to access stuff that is pushed–***** a lot of battery life doing this. It makes it worse if you have exchange 2010 accounts. Something about changes made to exchange really suck battery life from devices that access such accounts.

    Hi
Just to clarify a couple of points in your post.
RAM (memory) is different from hard drive space. You have 4GB of RAM, but that has no bearing on the amount of drive space you have, of which we know that 79GB are photos.
If those photos are in iPhoto, you should be able to move the entire iPhoto Library, from the Pictures folder, to your external hard drive. You can just drag and drop. Do not have iPhoto open while you're doing this. Once it's done, you can double-click on the moved iPhoto Library file to associate it with iPhoto, so that the app remembers where the library is for next time.
One more thing. When you move a file to a different location, and then delete the original, you don't have a backup. You still only have one copy. So if that external drive dies, you will lose all your photos. Time Machine is a very good way to prevent this from happening. You should dedicate a different drive for Time Machine backups.

Want to know how Apple will get 20 hours out of their 60GB iPods batteries ?
They'll fill it with music and fully charge it (of course), then get it to play continuously (probably on random/shuffle or something similar) until the battery dies. They'll have the screen off all that time and they simply won't touch it, in an attempt to get the longest time they can.
    ie. it won't simulate real-life use !
Few other things worth mentioning :
    - Battery life whilst playing videos is only 3 hours total, so playing any videos at all is going to make quite a difference
    - The battery life indicator is only a rough guide - it's not accurate
    - Don't get too obsessed with 'calibrating' the battery. Accoring to Apple, this isn't necessary because ""lithium-ion batteries, such as those used in iPod, have none of the memory effects seen in nickel-based rechargeable batteries."

  • IPhoto 8.1.2 - Rebuilding Photo Library - Photo Library is unreadable

    Hi,
I am using iPhoto 8.1.2 and have had no issues with iPhoto for many years. However, when I tried to access iPhoto yesterday I obtained the following message:
"You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.
You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto. QUIT"
I then tried to restart and re-install the iPhoto 8.1.2 update. Afterwards I got the following message:
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup. QUIT"
I backed up my photo library and went ahead and restarted the computer again and then proceeded to try and rebuild my photo library. After looking at several discussion threads in this forum, I hoped for the best and checked the following boxes:
    - Rebuild the photos' small thumbnails
    - Rebuild all of the photos' thumbnails
    - Recover orphaned photos in the iPhoto library folder
    - Examine and repair iPhoto library file permissions
    - Rebuild the iPhoto library database from automatic backup
It took a long time, however in the end it seems like iPhoto was once again able to access my photos. However, there are 3 things that make me feel concerned:
    (1) I don't think all my photos were present. Originally, if I am not mistaken, there were around 22,000 photos and now only 20,000 are present.
    (2) During the process of rebuilding the library, iPhoto gobbled up another 5GB of hard disk space. I don't know why, but I think iPhoto might have doubled at least some of my photos.
    (3) Afterwards it seemed like iPhoto froze during "building thumbnails" (the blue bar was about 80-90% complete) - possibly because of lack of hard disk space - and after letting it work over night, I decided to force quit iPhoto this morning.
I then decided to throw away the new "rebuilt library" because of the missing photos and the extra 5GB. After throwing the library away, I placed once again my previous backed up photo library in the pictures folder. So, essentially (I think), I am back to square one.
I would appreciate any help and advice on what I should do. I am afraid of doing the wrong thing and irremediably doing damage to my photos and photo library.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi TD,
Thank you for your quick reply and support.
My HD has a capacity of about 320GB. When I received the error message I had about 24 GB free space. The actual Photo Library is about 19GB in size.
I did the back up on my hard disk, after duplicating the Photo Library I had about 5 GB left over space during the Photo Library Rebuild.
However, after I did the rebuild, the Photo Library size jumped up to over 24GB! Leaving me with only 100MB of HD space left, at this point the thumbnail rebuild seemed to stall. This is when I decided to eventually force quit iPhoto.
Now that I have thrown away the bloated Photo Library and returned to the original one, I am back at about 25GB free space.
I think I know the source of my issue, I don't know if this will help you in advising me on how to get myself out of this mess. I foolishly did a clean up of my hard disk with a clean up / space freeing program. I think one of the little files that was accidentally cleaned up was linked to / related to my iPhoto library.
Thanks for the link to iPhoto Library Manager. I realize that this is definitely an option, but if possible for me only as a last resort (I would like to keep all the books, and calendars data, etc. if possible).
Are there any other solutions? Why did iPhoto double some photos during the rebuild? Why did my Photo Library bloat up in size during the rebuild?
Did I check too many check boxes? Can I attempt another rebuild and if so, what can I do to do it properly?
Thank you again for your help.

  • IPhoto will not open want me to "rebuild photo library" and restart

When I try to open iPhoto i get this error message:
"Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup."
I have tried everything it says, and updated iPhoto, although this problem was happening before today's update.
I just purchased my macbook this past weekend and I am stupid when it comes to mac stuff! Thank you all in advance...

I figured it out. It seems that I some how deleted the folder name where iPhoto stores stuff.

  • I have the iPad 2 and it keeps dying, when it dies it wont turn back on, it shows the apple sign but that is it. THen it shuts off and does the same thing over again, I have tried holding the sleep/awake button along with the home button! HELP!!!

    Please help!

I'm sorry, you are correct I am trying to restore my ipad because it stopped working.   We thought the battery was dead so we plugged it into the wall charger.  All it does when plugged in is flash the apple logo like it is going to start up and then shut off.  It repeats this every few seconds while it is plugged into the wall.  I let it charge overnight and still nothing.
When I hold the power button and the home button down together while the ipad is plugged into the wall, it does flash then after I release the power button the connect to itunes screen comes on.   But when I connect it to my computer it goes blank.   itunes does not recongnize my ipad when I plug it into the computer.  I have used the same cord to plug in my other devices and itunes recongnizes them so it isn't the usb cord.
It seems as if my system has crashed and I think this may just be an apple service trip for me.  But thanks so much for the advice.   =D

  • 'Rebuilding photo library'.

    I am currently running 4.0.1.
Since the update, there have been two occasions in which I have gone to take a photo (or open my photo library), and a white loading screen has appeared, telling me that it is 'rebuilding' my photo library.
This, on both occasions, took several minutes in which I was unable to take a photo or view my photo library. Once the download completed, a number of photos had disappeared, with a seemingly random selection of photos placed at the bottom of my library (all of which are from applications or screen shots). I believe that the photos and videos that disappeared were all the ones I had taken since the update, many of which were very valuable to me.
Any help or advice with regards to solving this problem, or recovering the photos and videos that I have lost, would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

I took it to the Apple Store the morning after I posted this...the Genius recovered all of the pictures. Hope they can do the same for you. He said it may happen if there are a very large number of photos on the phone. So back them up and have only the pictures one will look at often on your phone.

  • STB resets constantly - screen goes green then box shuts off, resets

I have followed the self-help to reset the box, had the live chat guy reset the box, and tried everything suggested on these forums. I am paying a ton of money for a tv service that shuts off over and over again and resets the box, telling me to wait for "a minute" while it downloads. I can't get through a single television show. I tried to call Verizon by phone to get a service person, but wasted my time repeating misunderstood phrases back to a robot.
    Very frustrated. Any help?

  • Photos blurry after rebuilding photo library

OK, so I followed the directions and completed the rebuilding of my iPhoto library. However, now in the edit window the photos look out of focus (they weren't before!) and when I tried making a book the message I got was that the photos are of "low quality." What do I do now????
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

What purpose do thumbs serve anyway? Why don't I need them?
    Iphoto 5 works like this:
When you import a photo it imports the original and
then creates a low quality Thumbnail image into
folders called "thumbs". The thumbnail is not your
photo just a reference that you see when you view
your iphoto library. In addition if you ever modify
(red eye for example) a photo than iphoto creates a
    modified copy of the original...
So you may be asking what does this mean to me
    Here is what I
you said you had a back up copy so do this.
    - Delete all you iphoto libraries up until this point
then make another copy of you backup.
    - DO a search on one of the backup libraries for all
folders called "thumbs" and put them in the trash
    - open iphoto and create a new iphoto library.
    - import images from the iphoto library folder that
    you trashed the "thumbs" from
Note: You will still import what appears to be
duplicates but in actuallity it will be the original
image and then any modified version of any images
that you modified. But at least you wont have those
    pesky Thumbnails

  • X6 froze at startup screen and then auto shut off

    Hi everyone,
Just bought my X6 8Gb two days ago. And I had installed Garmin Mobile XT in it the next day. Everything was fine until I tried to backup my contacts, calendar notes and saved messages from my 6230i using Ovi suite. The phone is able to recognise all of the contacts, calendar notes, and saved messages. However, when I restarted the phone, it stays at the Nokia white startup screen and then shut itself off. The only way around this is to do a hard reset which wipes out everything (Garmin still installed).
Anyone else had this problem? Thanks!

    Hi,
To eject the disc press the mouse/trackpad button while turning the machine on.
I would tentatively say that the HD has gotten corrupted. It is possible that it has failed though.
Have you tried booting in single user mode and running fsck?
Hold down the 'Apple' key and 's' while turning the machine on.
You should see a load of white text and then a 'root#' prompt.
    When this is reached type:
    fsck -fy
    press 'Return'
If this fails to repair the HD then I would suggest trying it in target disk mode attached to another Mac and run disk utility on it from that.
If all of these fail the only thing to try next would be to reformat the HD and see if that makes it usable. If it starts reporting errors again I thing the HD is likely knackered.

Does a Reset work? Mostly unlikely! [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. When the screen goes blank then power ON again in the normal way.] It is 'appsolutely' safe!
