Rebuilding Volume Files Without a CD

This one is a doozy...
So I've got an old 300MHz Tangerine Clamshell with 320MB RAM running OS 9.2 (yes, I'm one of the last holdouts to X). The CD drive on it has been broken since I bought it (used), but everything else is in great shape, and I've been able to connect it to my desktop via Ethernet, or to my external USB CD-RW drive when I've needed to.
Last week, I loan the thing to my girlfriend because her laptop was down for repair (Windows, naturally). She did... something to it, and I get it back running really slow, with a constant hard drive spinning (click, click, click, pause, repeat). I run some diagnostics in TechTool and sure enough, my Volume file, Extents, Catalog, etc. are all screwed up.
Now, normallly, this would be no problem to fix: start up from the CD and fix the broken files on the HD. Except that my CD drive doesn't work, as I said. I can get it to mount on my desktop via Ethernet/AppleTalk, but TechTool and Norton won't let me perform operations on a remote volume like that. So I'm looking for some way to fix these files on the startup volume, which involves me being able to unmount it and put it in the service of another drive, but frankly, I'm at a loss as to how to do this.
I've tried using Option at startup to switch startup disks while I've had a USB flash drive with a system folder plugged in, to no avail. I'm about to try the same thing with my external CDRW, but I'm not optimistic, because it's a drive that isn't fully supported by OS 9 and needs drivers to be seen, so I don't know if it will work as a boot volume.
Does anyone have any suggestions here, or do I just have to pay someone to do this? I knew that broken CD drive would come back to bite me...

The only 2 solutions:
Replace the CD-ROM so that you have a working CD-ROM.
Remove the hard drive and connect it to another Mac. Perform the clean up there. Then reinstall it into your iBook.

Data recovery! Rebuilding Home Directory without Reformatting

I have an WD external hard drive failure. Very recently, I started using this drive as default for iPhoto so now cannot access any of my photos. (I have a 5-year-old son so you can imagine how devastating this is.) To make matters worse, it is also my Time Machine backup drive so I cannot access the last backup prior to the iPhoto drive switch.
Here is a timeline of events:
(I know this is long. I am hoping someone who is familiar with this issue will understand my plight and be patient to read thru.)
04/01/10 iPhoto default drive was transfered from internal drive to WD external drive to accommodate space on the internal drive due to errors in running Virtual Machine due to internal drive being too full.
04/15/10 last upload to iPhoto.
04/18/10 last time I accessed iPhoto. It was left open and went to a "Not Responding" status. I believe I noticed this and did a "Force Quit" on 04/22/10.
04/22/10-04/23/10 Time Machine backup failed overnight and now the computer is unable to read the drive. It is a 500GB drive that is now reading as a 2TB drive and not able to see anything on the disk. I am unable to see when we had the last successful Time Machine backup as Time Machine also backed up to this drive.
We tried connecting the drive to my Mac laptop; same read error (2TB drive when it's 500GB). We also tried hooking it up to the Windows Virtual Machine on the Mac. It gave all the indicators that the drive was installed and working properly however it never showed up in My Computer. When clicking to Unplug Safely, the drive was listed as a USB Mass Storage Device.
04/24/10 Called Apple support. Tech led me thru unplugging drive and computer and doing a reset by pressing and holding power button while unplugged. I then plugged back in and pressed a series of four keys. The system now reads the correct size of the drive but still will not mount on the desktop.
When he could no longer help me, he told me to go here and find applications relating to "Rebuilding Home Directory without Reformatting." I was unable to find anything so I am posting... He did indicate that this normally refers to the internal drive but "a hard drive is a hard drive." He could not tell me an exact name of the utility as it is not Apple-recommended.
Can anyone offer any help before we go down the data recovery road?

The tech was most likely referring to Disk Warrior. However, DW does not repair the Home folder, it repairs the disk's entire directory by rebuilding the directory. The drive is not erased. But this may not fix your problem. If you have damaged system files then the system will not boot. You would need to reinstall OS X. You may be able to do that as follows:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

This makes no sense at all - all of your previous statements indicate that you do have an iPhoto library but have some problems with it
By default your iPHoto library is located in your Pictures folder and is named iPhtoo library - if tha tis not the case the you have moved or renamed it and only you know what you did until you tell us the details

Write xmp sidecar files without need to export masters - script

I've written a script to write xmp sidecar files for referenced and online images (the 2 conditions in the script) of the selected images. I looked for a while at system events and other stuff to be able to write the xmp file, but i'm not a programmer, so in the end i chose the long and dirty way to do it.
This script will export all iptc expanded fields as aperture does (creating basically the same file). It can be easily adjusted to include other tags, even custom ones. I don't know how to get at the adjustments for images, otherwise those could be included as well.
If anyone has the energy to clean this up and make it faster, feel free to do so. Next, I'm going to try to write a script to do the opposite, import xmp sidecars for imported online and referenced files.

I don't know how to get at the adjustments for images, otherwise those could be included as well.
They are stored as binary data in the Version XML files at the bottom level of the Library package. You can also have a look around in the ZRKIMAGEADJUSTMENT table, but again the actual settings for each adjustment are in binary form.
If anyone has the energy to clean this up and make it faster, feel free to do so.
As far as I can remember, Aperture uses the 'proper' IPTC tag names when accessing them via AppleScript, so you may be able to do a loop through all the IPTC tags for each image, rather than picking out each specific one. But that would need checking. The EXIFTools site is a good place to find out about the different ways that IPTC data can be described.
Next, I'm going to try to write a script to do the opposite, import xmp sidecars for imported online and referenced files.
Don't rush unless you feel like it - I've already started planning out a free (as in beer and speech) XMP importer with a GUI so that you can choose how to map the XMP CORE tags that don't exist in Aperture. You've given me an extra idea, though - if we can decide on a set of custom tags, my importer could map the XMP CORE tags to them and your exporter could export those tags.

P.S. I'll check through your script tomorrow, some of the database tables changed between 1.5.6 and 2.0, so you might need to add in a version check to be really thorough.

Files without extensions read as UNIX exe files

I have an iMac connecting to my MacBook Pro that has several external drives attached by firewire. On those external drives the iMac sees any file without an extension as exe files. In particular, font files are seen this way.
Can I add extension to the font files (most of them postscript type 2) so that the iMac sees them as fonts rather an exe files?
Or is there a way of solving the problem that has a more broad approach?

First, ensure that Finder->Preferences->Advanced->Show all filename extensions is checked, then check those files. If the issue continues, then rebuild the LaunchServices database by running this one-line command in the Terminal.app (/Applications/Utilities/)—copy & paste it into the Terminal window and hit the return key:

Restart and see if that fixes the problem.

Invalid volume file count and directory count

My wife's macbook pro started shutting down by itself randomly, so i performed Disk Utility Verify Disk and found these errors:
Invalid volume file count
(It should be 800651 instead of 800653)
Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 191005 instead of 191003)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
As i do not have the Mac OS Leopard disks physically with me, I target-disk started her mac on my mac, and use my mac to run Disk Utility on her hard-disk, and repaired the disk without problems.
However, this is the 3rd or 4th time this has happened. After the 1st time, i figured something is causing it, so i checked this forum, and found that for some, the Blackberry Messenger app causes programs, so i promptly uninstalled it fully (including associated system files) and this problem didnt come back for a while.
Or could this be a sign the hard disk is physically failing soon? It is out of warranty now. We have regular TimeMachine backups. We are actually kinda waiting out until the new line of macbook pro's come out.. (hopefully in June at WWDC)

Well, the disk errors are due to corruption caused by the random power downs, so focus on getting that issue solved first. What's the stats on the battery?

Exporting Volume File Maps

When I close a file I keep getting the message "Exporting volume file maps" which continues for a few seconds and the file then closes.
This appears to have only started since I imported my Soundtrack Pro loops into the Logic Loop Browser. Also when I use the STP loops I get a message that the file cannot have an overview written yet the loop appears to work fine and I can alter the loop without any problems.
I have deleted all unused items in the project and cleared the files up but I still get the exporting message. It even happens when the project only has one Ultrabeat track in it.
Everything in Logic appears to be working fine but I am just concerned that something bad might be going on in the background that will cause a problem in my files.
Anyone know anything about this.

Do not worry. This is part of Project Manager's operation.
Project Manager keeps "maps" of your volumes (Drives, Partitions), for the data it knows about.
Every file Logic encounters either by just using Logic or Project Manager scans will be in the map.

umm... right: flash applications, as mentioned. Not videos though; like the original post stated. There's really no need for you to attempt to justify your incorrect recommendation though.

It's not an incorrect recommendation. In some situations, SWF is the better choice. In other situations it isn't. Without a link to the page, neither of us can know for sure what the OP has going on. :-)

Intrusive media on web sites is very annoying. If your media has audio, you really need to give people an on/off button and volume controls.

Disk Utility: invalid volume file count & directory count

My MacBook OS X version 10.5.8 has ran quite slowly occasionally but I think that's due to the fact I've had it for almost 5 years. But then yesterday it kept on freezing every few seconds so that it was impossible to do anything. I then left it overnight and in the morning cleared the safari cache and kept rebooting it which eventually stopped it freezing so often. But now certain applications such as iTunes keep quitting before they even open properly and applications that do work still freeze every so often. So then I ran disk utility and verified the disk which came up with this:

However the 'repair disk' button is dimmed so I can't click on it. Then when I typed in my problem on the help bar it said I need to use the installation disk to be able to repair this but I don't know where this disc is, so was wondering if there are any ways of fixing this without needing a disc?

No.
You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair:

Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.
Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.

Cannot move files without authenticating

Why can't I move files without getting the message that it needs to authenticate? Just upgraded to new iMac with Lion 10.7.4.

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Back up all data now. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to its present state
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:

You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.

Hey Rechete. Check out "Split Development Directory Environment" which we introduced in 8.1.
The WebLogic split development directory provides these benefits:
* Fast development and deployment. By minimizing unnecessary file copying, the split development directory Ant tasks help you recompile and redeploy applications quickly without first generating a deployable archive file or exploded archive directory.

While in Finder, select the file (click on its icon once) then press the Spacebar.

File-RFC-File (without BPM)- Issue

Hi All,
I am working on a File-RFC-File (without BPM) scenario in PI 7.1.
My scenario is having few problems like, its not able to delete the file from the source directory path (for which we have delete permissions) and it is an NFS system and it shows an error in the Sender file CC.
"Error: com.sap.aii.af.service.cpa.impl.exception.CPAObjectKeyException: Value of key must not be null: ObjectId"
But it gets processed successfully and provides a written paramter which I could see in MONI, but again doesn't write the file in the target directory. Could you please provide your inputs and let me know if I need to do any additional settings w.r.to PI7.1.
These are the parameters which I have specified in the Sender File adapter

Download ZIP file without changing file extension

I regularly download a zipped csv file, of the format: "filename.csv.gz". As the name does not change, Firefox adds a digit to distinguish it, so for example I get "filename.csv-3.gz". This is a pain as it changes the file extension which means that I cannot open the extracted file without first renaming it. I want to keep an archive of all the files, so deleting them each time isn't really an option, and neither is moving them to a different location each time. Is there any way the naming convention for downloads can be changed?

I can open a file using dialog box but I want to open a file without using any dialog box for writing.
