Rebuilt IPhoto Library does not display.

Recently my iPhoto has been crashing, probably because I unknowingly moved a file or files in the iPhoto Library with the Finder.
Heeding the advice posted throughout this forum I trashed the existing iPhoto Preferences file, the three thumb files, and rebuilt my iPhoto Library. (I don't recall in what order.)
I renamed my two respective iPhoto Libraries so now iPhoto automatically finds the new one.
In the Finder, the new iPhoto Library is nearly identical to the old one; it contains over 21 GB of photos, all arranged in their respective folders organized by year, month, and day created.
When I open iPhoto, however, neither the thumbnails nor the file names of the photos display.
In the "Source" pane, icons for "Early Photos," "2003," "2004," "2005," and "2006" appear under "Photo Library" but selecting them does nothing.
Nothing ever appears in the main "Organize" pane at all--it is completely blank. Below it "No photos" appears.
iPhoto will still display the pictures in the old Library, but it crashes almost immediately after I do anything.
Obviously there is some disconnect between iPhoto and the Rebuilt Library. Can anyone offer some insight?
Thanks.
Mike
Imac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

After considerable culling of unnecessary and redundant files I was finally able to free up enough disk space to conduct a second iPhoto library rebuild without having to delete the first rebuilt library.
Unfortunately I've run into problems once again.
Since the rebuild took 2 1/2 hours I wasn't watching the computer the whole time; when I returned iPhoto had crashed but the second rebuilt library seemed complete. My original library is 21.9 GB; my first rebuilt library is 21.28 GB and contains most of the photos of the original--my second rebuilt library is also 21.28 GB.
After the second rebuild I now have 3.98 GB free space on my hard drive (and 2GB RAM).
iPhoto will open the first rebuilt library, although as I described previously, it won't actually display any photos, rolls, or albums. In contrast, iPhoto will not open with the second rebuilt library at all.
When I attempt to open iPhoto and select the second rebuilt library the file selection window opens and all my iPhoto libraries appear in it. None of them are grayed out (as are non-selectable files) but nevertheless I cannot select the second iPhoto library or even highlight it. It does not provide any message--it simply does not respond.
Unlike the first rebuilt library, the second rebuilt library never contained a Dir.data file, an iPhoto.db file, a Library.iPhoto file, or an AlbumData.xml file. It did contain the three thumb data files, but after opening it failed initially I tried deleting these files thinking they might be problematic. That apparently had no effect. Right now the second rebuilt library only contains my photos organized in year, month, and day folders.
Previously Brie Fly stated that iPhoto automatically opens the newly rebuilt iPhoto library after a rebuild, however, the first time I opened iPhoto after the second rebuild attempt and subsequent crash it automatically opened the original iPhoto library.
I copied the error report from the iPhoto crash that occurred after my second library rebuild attempt. Please see below. Does it shed any light on the situation?
Also, to answer your question Brie Fly, I am able to close all the open rolls in my original library before iPhoto crashes. I did that and after a short while it crashed anyway without any other action on my part. I also tried quitting iPhoto after closing the rolls, but every time I do, regardless of whether there are open rolls or not, it does not quit but crashes. It seems impossible to quit iPhoto while using the original library without crashing. Furthermore, every time I open iPhoto after a crash the rolls I previously closed are once again open, and iPhoto informs me it has recovered 17 photos and put them in a folder named "recovered photos." Since this occurs every time I try to quit while using the original library I now have 88 identical folders of 17 recovered photos. I deleted many of these before but iPhoto just keeps making new ones.
Here is the report I received after iPhoto had crashed during/after the second library rebuild attempt:

  • IPhoto Library does not load

    Hi there,
Recently updated to Lion on a fresh install of Mac OSX Snow Leopard. I backed-up everything using Time Machine as well as doing a secondary backup to an external drive.
Everything installed and worked fine, but unfortunately iPhoto no longer opens and is unnable to load my iPhoto Library as it states that the photo library has been opened with a newer version of iPhoto.
I've tried re-installing iLife, using a previous version of the Photo Library from Time Machine with no luck whatsoever.
Does anyone know any work arounds or how to get my iPhoto Library to work.
    Many Thanks!

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • After Upgrading my Library does not Display

I backed up my entire Macpro and did a clean install of Leopard and iPhoto 08. I copied the contents of my backed-up pictures folder to the pictures folder in the new install of Leopard. IPhoto 08 shows my albums and folders on the left side, and there are placeholders where each image should be, however, nothing displays, and when I select an image, a giant exclamation mark appears.
1.) Any idea what might be wrong?
2.) I still have a backup of my pictures photo from Tiger, so I can go back and restore it if need be,
3.) Inside my pictures folder in the Leopard install of iPhoto 08 that is not working, I have lots of files. Are some of these not needed?
    Library.iPhoto
    Library6.iPhoto
    Library.data
    iPhotoLock.data
    iPhoto.ipspot
    Dir.data
    AlbumData.xml
    Data folder
    iPhoto Library folder
    iPod Photo Cache folder
    Modified folder
    Originals folder
    Tumb32Segment.data
    Thumb64Segment.data
    ThumbJPGSegment.data
    Thanks!!!!

You have a damaged library database file:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Copy items to the iphoto library does not seem to do anything

My understanding is that if I un-check "copy items to the iphoto library" images would be not be copied from the source and its just a reference.
But when I pull my external flash drive out I still see the thumbnail and can still open the image in full resolution.
So to me this makes it appear the check box is doing nothing.
Im sure it is but I cant tell what its doing.
Also if it is making a copy to my HD where is it going?
If its going to the iphotolib although I unchecked it and told it not to, where is it, I opened Show Package Contents but cant find my images.
    Ed,

If you uncheck that preference (which is very strongly NOT recommended) then the originals are referenced rather than copied and the original must always be available on the eact same path
I suggest you reconsider as you will have many problems if you build a referenced library

  • Iphoto library does not open.

    Hello there!.
It shows like this when i open it. ( Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable..Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup). I already delete it and download it again but it shows the same problem.
    I am using imac.
    Please help me.
    Regards
    Riaz Uddin

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto calendar does not display selected calendars

I have created a calendar specifically for use in iPhoto's calendar project. It does not show. Others of my calendars do but not this one. I cannot identify a single factor that would cause this. Date clash is not an issue; calendar (in Calendar) is text only.
I am hoping for some guidance.

Have you rebooted and tried again since this began?
Also as a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

  • My iphoto library does not back up

I thought that timemachine would back up my desktop including my photos to my external drive. There is regular back up taking place but I am pretty sure my 6,000 pictures library is not backed up.
    1. Where do I need to look to find it
    2. is it possible to have such a photo library backed up automatically?
If not what are my options: drag and drop the pictures to my external hard drive?
    Thanks
    Armand

I thought that timemachine would back up my desktop including my photos to my external drive. There is regular back up taking place but I am pretty sure my 6,000 pictures library is not backed up.
    Why do you think this?
    1. Where do I need to look to find it
Launch TM from the dock and look back to see what is in the pictures folder (the default location of the iPhoto library) - to test you can select a previous version of the iPhoto library and restore it to the desktop (not to your pictures folder where it would overwrite your existing iPhoto library) and launch iPhoto while depressing the option key to select the restored library to test - do the option launch again to go back to your current library
    2. is it possible to have such a photo library backed up automatically?
Yes - by default that is what TM does
If not what are my options: drag and drop the pictures to my external hard drive?
You can always drag the iPhoto library as a single entity to an external drive

  • Aperature and iPhoto Library does not share properly

I have the latest version of Aperture, iPhoto and also have Maverick installed. After sorting trrough 30,000 photos and getting it down to half of that and put all the photos into events.
But when I open Aperture, it still has photos all spread over all over and did not put the photos in the events where I placed them. Both iPhoto and Aperture have the same amount of total photos but the Events in iPhoto and the Projects in Apeture to not match.
Is there a way to update the photos in Aperture to agree with iPhoto so they are all in the same Event/Project?
    Thank you.

But when I open Aperture, it still has photos all spread over all over and did not put the photos in the events where I placed them.
This looks like you were using different photo libraries in Aperture and iPhoto.  Do you have duplcated your photo library?
You should be seeing all iPhoto events as Aperture projects, if you open your iPhoto library in Aperture. What do you see, when you open iPhoto and use the command "File > Open library in Aperture". Are you still seeing more events in Aperture than in iPhoto?
Another reason for seeing more projects in Aperture than events in iPhoto could be, that you may have hidden photos in iPhoto. If all photos in an event are hidden, the event will not show in the list of events, unless you enable "View > Show hidden photos". Aperture will show these events as empty projects.
And iPhoto will not show photos that have been rejected in Aperture. You cannot even unreject them.

  • Iphoto library does not show photo files or years

Since installing I photo 8 I can no longer see individual files (or photos)in the finder window - I see the Iphoto Library and its a huge size but when i click on the file I cannot see the photos, nothing happens.
I can see all the photos in the Iphoto window pane.
Previously I used to go to this file and take copies of the various years to place on DVD for backup.
    Can you help
    thanks

    Super mac Mom,
What you were doing previously was dangerous - you were modifying the old iPhoto's library from outside the iPhoto application. The truth is that it isn't a good idea with iPhoto 08, and it wasn't a good idea then either.
To answer your question - all you have to do is delete them from within iPhoto and then empty iPhoto's trash. They will no longer be on your computer. (This is assuming you have the "Copy items to iPhoto library" option checked - which it is by default. Since you said you "go into the library", this implies that you do have that option checked.) iPhoto will delete the original, anything modified, and the thumbnails when you do that. Your photos are as temporary as you want them to be.

  • My iPhoto library does not play the sound from videos by my digital camera

Hello, although the videos from my digital camera used to play sound from the iPhoto library, now they don't. only videos playing sound are the ones from the iPhone.  The digital camera videos, do play sound on media player.  Please help.  Thank you

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If the problem persists log into another user account on your Mac, create another test library and test to see if the problem persists there.  Does it?
Can you export a video from the digital camera to the Desktop as Kind = Original and play it with Quicktime Player?  Does the sound play then?

I have my iphoto library on an external hard drive and I did install and run the iphoto upgrader programand it says that my iphoto library has been updated. I tried holding down alt/option key while I open iphoto to select my iphoto library and still no photos load. The image below is what my iphoto looks like. I hope I didn't lose any photos.. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you,

  • IPhoto 6 does not display correct Spotlight results

I am new to OS X, and I have not to my knowledge altered any of the default Spotlight/iPhoto options.
I have a large photo library. When searching through it using spotlight, it finds exactly the results I want. However, when clicking on the result, iPhoto 6 opens and always displays the first photo in my library.
No matter what I search for or what result I select, iPhoto still shows the same photo - the first in my library.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I'd prefer to use iPhoto and not Preview. Thanks.

Problem solved. Disconnected from iMac and restated iMac and new album appeared and sync complete!

  • When i look for photos in finder my iphoto library does not appear, but when i open iphoto, all my photos are there, how can i fix this?

this means i can't attach photos from iphoto to emails for example, how can I remedy it?

Of course you can, just remember that iphoto replaces the finder. It's the manager for your photos.

Is this iPhoto on your Mac?  Are you referring to the photos that were in your iPhoto LIbrary prior to the upgrade to iPhoto 11?  If so then apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If that's not what you're referring to then you should describe what is happening in more detail. Remember we can't see your Mac or your iPhone so need detailed and accurate descriptions of what you're experiencing.
Also we need infomartion like do you have an iCloud account and are you logged into it on all of your devices, iPhoto and Mac? do you have Photo Stream enabled on both.
