Rebuilt iphoto Library not syncing
I had the problems of thumbnails 'disappearing' when I tried to edit my photos on my imac. Thanks to the great advice here from Terence Devlin, Old Toad and others, I rebuilt my Library and now have all my photos restored and working.
However, a new problem arose when I tried to sync my iphone4S and ipad3. I have over 18000 photos so I only keep a few on my mobile devices. After syncing, there was a report that itunes could not sync the majority of the photos that I had previously kept on the devices.
I'd appreciate any guidance on what to do now, and easy-to-follow (I'm a newbie to things Apple) instructions on how to resolve the problem.
Thanks for your very prompt responses. I did that first repair, and it has improved the syncing to some extent. I still get the error message ("3320 items could not be synced. See iTunes for more information") as some photos I would like to sync appear on my iphone as blanks.
Do you know where I might find on iTunes the "more information" mentioned? I have looked but I can't seem to find any more details.

Rebuilt IPhoto Library does not display.
Recently my iPhoto has been crashing, probably because I unknowingly moved a file or files in the iPhoto Library with the Finder.
Heeding the advice posted throughout this forum I trashed the existing iPhoto Preferences file, the three thumb files, and rebuilt my iPhoto Library. (I don't recall in what order.)
I renamed my two respective iPhoto Libraries so now iPhoto automatically finds the new one.
In the Finder, the new iPhoto Library is nearly identical to the old one; it contains over 21 GB of photos, all arranged in their respective folders organized by year, month, and day created.
When I open iPhoto, however, neither the thumbnails nor the file names of the photos display.
In the "Source" pane, icons for "Early Photos," "2003," "2004," "2005," and "2006" appear under "Photo Library" but selecting them does nothing.
Nothing ever appears in the main "Organize" pane at all--it is completely blank. Below it "No photos" appears.
iPhoto will still display the pictures in the old Library, but it crashes almost immediately after I do anything.
Obviously there is some disconnect between iPhoto and the Rebuilt Library. Can anyone offer some insight?

Imac G5 Mac OS X (10.3.9)After considerable culling of unnecessary and redundant files I was finally able to free up enough disk space to conduct a second iPhoto library rebuild without having to delete the first rebuilt library.
Unfortunately I've run into problems once again.
Since the rebuild took 2 1/2 hours I wasn't watching the computer the whole time; when I returned iPhoto had crashed but the second rebuilt library seemed complete. My original library is 21.9 GB; my first rebuilt library is 21.28 GB and contains most of the photos of the original--my second rebuilt library is also 21.28 GB.
After the second rebuild I now have 3.98 GB free space on my hard drive (and 2GB RAM).
iPhoto will open the first rebuilt library, although as I described previously, it won't actually display any photos, rolls, or albums. In contrast, iPhoto will not open with the second rebuilt library at all.
When I attempt to open iPhoto and select the second rebuilt library the file selection window opens and all my iPhoto libraries appear in it. None of them are grayed out (as are non-selectable files) but nevertheless I cannot select the second iPhoto library or even highlight it. It does not provide any message--it simply does not respond.
Unlike the first rebuilt library, the second rebuilt library never contained a Dir.data file, an iPhoto.db file, a Library.iPhoto file, or an AlbumData.xml file. It did contain the three thumb data files, but after opening it failed initially I tried deleting these files thinking they might be problematic. That apparently had no effect. Right now the second rebuilt library only contains my photos organized in year, month, and day folders.
Previously Brie Fly stated that iPhoto automatically opens the newly rebuilt iPhoto library after a rebuild, however, the first time I opened iPhoto after the second rebuild attempt and subsequent crash it automatically opened the original iPhoto library.
I copied the error report from the iPhoto crash that occurred after my second library rebuild attempt. Please see below. Does it shed any light on the situation?
Also, to answer your question Brie Fly, I am able to close all the open rolls in my original library before iPhoto crashes. I did that and after a short while it crashed anyway without any other action on my part. I also tried quitting iPhoto after closing the rolls, but every time I do, regardless of whether there are open rolls or not, it does not quit but crashes. It seems impossible to quit iPhoto while using the original library without crashing. Furthermore, every time I open iPhoto after a crash the rolls I previously closed are once again open, and iPhoto informs me it has recovered 17 photos and put them in a folder named "recovered photos." Since this occurs every time I try to quit while using the original library I now have 88 identical folders of 17 recovered photos. I deleted many of these before but iPhoto just keeps making new ones.

I have an old mpg video file, taken with a very early model "smart phone", that opens and plays fine in my newly "rebuilt" iPhoto library. I cannot open, edit it or share it with any other software. How can I fix it, to be able to do anything with it?
Detail:
I've recently purchaced a 4TB Thunderbolt drive to store my "vast" music and photo libraries. iPhoto had an issue reading the moved library, so I bought and used iPhoto Library Manager to "rebuild" it. Apart from much of the original data such as date taken & camera used etc, it appears to be working well. The aforementioned mpg video was taken some 9 years ago, using an early model "iMate" smart phone, and opens and plays fine on iPhoto, but I cannot open it with anything else, (I've tried iMovie, VLC players, Wondershare and Handbrake) nor can I share it. I just want to edit it, and share it with family.
Any help would be appreciated...No - not iMovie, VLC, Wondershare or Handbrake... Quick time starts with a "CONVERTING", then I get
I've looked at the "tell me more" links, tried downloading some of the movie players there. I'm begining to think the file is corrupt.

Sharing iPhoto Library Not Recomended?

Is this really a problem? I would like to do this if its not a problem. Acually I do have several iPhoto Libraries in the /Users/Shared folder and so far in iPhoto 5 there didn't seem to be any major problems except for the one listed at the bottom. When upgrading to iPhoto 6 yesterday I did get the permission error while opening a /Users/Shared/iPhoto Library for the first time and I did this.
Setting Permissions for iPhoto Library Folder
1 - Select the iPhoto Library folder and type Command-I.
2 - When the Info window comes up go to the Ownership and Permissions section and make sure You have Read & Write permission and that the Owner and Group have Read & Write also. Others - Read Only.
3 - Then click on the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.
And it seems to be fine. I would really like to keep the iPhoto Libraries in the /Users/Shared folder if I can so that both me (Admin) and my wife (Standard) can access/edit/add/delete pics to this library. Thats why I'm troubled why it's not recommeded.
I also use iPhoto Library Manager v3.2.1 and have the options set as Owner and Group have Read & Write and Others - Read Only. I also have the settings Permissions to Apply as enabled to automatically apply before launching iPhoto and when iPhoto Quits. But I only use it if I want to change libraries if not I just open iPhoto.
I noticed in iPhoto 5 that sometimes after importing photos to this library from one user that when accessing that library from another user iPhoto wouldn't open until the permissions were changed again. I think this happened when I did not launch iphoto from iPhoto Library Manager. Does this mean if I leave the library in the Shared folder I should after importing photos always open iPhoto with iPhoto Library Manager to change the permissions. Will this fix the problem?

Iphoto library not visible for itunes home sharing
Hello, I have an issue where my iPhoto library is not visible in iTunes Photo Sharing Preferences. I wish to have my iPhoto library (Aperture Library) available on my Apple TV. I have switched on Home Sharing. When I go to iTunes/File/Home Sharing/ then wish to select which photos to share, iPhoto is not listed in the preference pane. The only available option is my Pictures folder.
My library is on an external hard drive. When I try to point to it manually, the library is greyed out.
Any ideas? I have been using Home Sharing for a long time and have not had this before. I have latest version of iTunes and iPhoto. My library is an Aperture library. The external hard drive is Mac OS Extended format. There should be no issues there. I have done a check disk and a repair permissions also.

Keep local iPhoto Library in sync over NAS

Here's my usecase: I want use ONE iPhoto Library with 3 Mac's and 2 Useraccounts. Why ONE library? Because i want work on Albums etc. on my stationary iMac in Room1, and finish it on my MacBook pro while sitting on my sofa :-) It also can be, that my wife will work on the same Album too. Of course not at the same time, but i don't want to tell her if the Library is available at the moment, or if I've already opended iPhoto on another Mac. It has to be automatically "locked" if someone is using it. Easy, just put the whole thing on a NAS and you got this effect automatically. Correct, but the speed isn't really nice. Why buying an i7 iMac with Fusion drive and using a NAS as source while working on photos...? Got it? (sorry for my poor english, i'm swiss but doing my best :-) )
Here's my solution approach I would like to have: (sorry a little confuse...)
My i7 iMac has a local iPhoto library. A "sync software" keeps the iPhoto library in sync with a mirrored version on a NAS, (wich can be a Timecapsule as well as any other NAS). when I open iPhoto on my iMac, it has to lock the whole iPhoto library on my NAS as well, so my wife can't open the library on my NAS while I'm using it local on my iMac. After i close my iPhoto on my iMac, the mirrored Library is available on my NAS where i can use it with my MacBook Pro directly from my NAS. The "sync software" has to lock the file in the other direction, so i can't open my local Library on my iMac at this time. When i close iPhoto on my macBook Pro it will be unlocked and the sync software on my iMac will update my local copy automatically the next time that i start my iMac and (surprise surprise) my local version is up to date!
You see my point? The clou is to lock the library on another place while using it's mirrored version. That helps preventing any corrupt iPhoto Librarys becaus of two user at the same time and you don't have any performance inconvenience.
Advanced version would be to habe many Mac's with local iPhoto librarys. It would still be the same: If it's not possible to use a Library at the same time, you wan't have any problemes with de database... right? There would be one problem: If you work on a local iPhoto library while you're not connected with your nas, you wan't have informations about the "lock" status... but that's another story-
I tried "synk pro" which keeps folders and documents "realtime" in sync. But it works really bad with NAS and my problem with the "lock" is still there.
Folks: Any ideas to share with me? I just wan't to have a SAVE iPhoto library to work on it with my wife an our 3 Mac's ;-)

RomaniPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.
This is particularly the case now that iPhoto uses the same library as Aperture:

it is strongly recommended that the Aperture library be stored on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing the Aperture library on a network share can also lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.
What do you mean by "Sync".
The general term means when two Libraries (A and B) are compared and files in Library A are copied to Library B, while files in Library B are also copied to Library A so that both Libraries are identical.
This is bi-directional copying and you cannot do this automatically with iPhoto. No Syncing software is capable of parsing the iPhoto Library in this manner. One or both of your Libraries will be damaged if you try this.
You can have uni-directional copying - files in Library A are copied to Library B - this is essentially backing up. Obviously you can also copy from Library B to Library A.
The nearest you can get to syncing is to use iPhoto Library Manager to move files/Albums/Events plus associated metadata between Libraries. This process cannot be automated. -
Iphoto will not sync with ipod touch
hi i have this problem with my ipod touch. when i go to sync everything is ok but iphoto does not sync i get the message . the ipod "xxx"cannot be synced the required file cannot be found. cheers sue

IPhoto Library Not Found after Upgrade to Leopard
I was running the newest iPhoto under Tiger and I just upgraded to Leopard. I tried to open iPhoto and a message said, "iPhoto library not found." It was there before I upgraded from Tiger. I mostly use Adobe Bridge so I didn't have much in iPhoto but I'm curious to see why the library disappeared and whether it can be restored. I looked all around on the hard disk and didn't see the iPhoto library anywhere. Thanks.
Yes, it must have been upgrade and install because I followed the defaults. The iPhoto library was in the Pictures folder in Tiger and I never moved it. After the upgrade to Leopard, it was gone--it is no longer in my Pictures folder, nor does it seem to be anywhere else. I didn't touch it--the upgrade made it disappear. Why did that happen? What can be done about it? Thanks very much.

certain events in iPhoto will not sync to my iPad. No Error messages comes up and the photos themselves are ok. its like my ipad doesn't see them. Cause i can get some photos on there just not all. Photos are from the same camera and should all be in the same format.
What is the file name of the video(s) you want to sync?
Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

Help! iPhoto library not available to other Apple applications
My iPhoto library is not available for browsing in other Apple applications like iMovie, Mail or even Desktop and Screen Saver. I've rebuilt the iPhoto database, fixed permissions, tried to do over starting with a clean plate and importing the database and nothing seems to work. The iPhoto library is unavailable to other Apple applications that can make use of it.
Any ideas as to how I can fix this problem? FWIW, iTunes is available in other Apple applications and iPhoto seems to work just fine as a stand alone application it just doesn't want to play with the other children anymore.

Sharing between applicationns is enabled by a file in the iPhoto Library Folder called the Albumdata.xml file.
First step: Remove this file and restart iPhoto. This will force iPhoto to rebuild the files. Then relaunch the other apps, see if they see can see iPhoto.
If not, do you have any non-ascii characters in your titles or keywords - bascaly anything that's not 0-9 or a - z.

I currently have a issue with my iPhoto & iPhone, i apologize if this is the incorrect area for assistance.
My iPhoto library has been synced with my iphone all my images/photos are saved onto the phone, but i want to put them back onto my Mac, unfortunately my iphoto library has been deleted (actual file). is there any way to achieve this?
i have tried syncing the photos but i believe it will delete them, and update with my current library (no images).
i have also tried to take the images off via iphoto & image capture but they only take newly taken images not the photos in the old library stored on my iphone.
i am using an iPhone 4S, Macbook Pro 2010 & current version of iPhoto.
Please advise if there is any way to move an iphoto library from iphone to mac.

I have an older ibook, G3, with just a CD drive. I am running tiger 10.4.10 and iphoto 2.0. I understand that in order to sync photo's I need the latest version of iphoto which is included with ilife 08. Here is my problem, ilife 08 will not run on a G3 mac! Plus I don't have a DVD drive to instal it? So ... How in the heck can I get the latest version of iphoto on an older ibook?
Create a folder in the location of your choice - named by whatever you choose but if you want to have an Album or multiple Albums of sorts, create these folders in the Pictures folder in your Home folder/directory - which should be the same location as your iPhoto library location.
Export the chosen pictures from iPhoto to the created folder or folders placed in your Pictures folder.
Under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes at Sync Photos From, select the Pictures folder which should be available via the pop-up menu.
Select - Selected Folders.
The folder or multiple folders you created within your Pictures folder should be available in the window below. You can select each folder or a chosen folder. The number of pictures available within each folder should be available to the right of the folder name.
Select Sync and you are done.
To add additional photos to your iPhone, add chosen photos to the existing folder or folders created in your Pictures folder or create a new folder. This is the manual way of creating albums within iPhoto but serves the same purpose. -
Complete iPhoto library not displayed by Apple TV
I have the 2nd generation Apple TV with home sharing active with MacbookPro 15" with all the latest iLife '11 software. One issue is that events from one iPhoto library are displayed in a different order on Apple TV than on iPhoto. No big problem, but confusing. Second, bigger issue is with larger iPhoto library (51,000 photos and 850 events). Only about 1/4 of the events show up in Apple TV, and strangely, they are in the same order as in iPhoto. The Apple TV apparently has an 8GB flash memory for buffering. Is this a limiting factor in how large an iPhoto library that can be displayed by the Apple TV?
There is a limit based on the 8GB internal storage on the ATV2. I confirmed this with Express Lane support today. ATV2 will try to load your entire library but will stop when it gets to the limit and does not provide any messages stating that the limit has been reached. This means that you will get roughly the first 20,000 of your library, starting with the most recent.
The work around is to select which albums or folders from iPhoto that are to be synced, much like you would do for an iPod or iPhone that can't fit your whole music or photo library. This selection process is done in iPhoto's Sharing preferences where you select Share my photos and choose the second option to Share selected albums. Note that the list will contain iPhoto folders as well as albums.
Once you reach the 8GB limit, you may also have a problem playing the video files in your iPhoto library that appear to have been synced, as the full videos are not loaded until they are selected for playing. Once that is tried, ATV2 will likely crash as the 8GB limit is exceeded. No harm is done to your library that is safe.
This whole process is not well supervised by the ATV2 system as it keeps the user in the dark.

Changing BAM installation User ID
I have installed BAM in a user account. I need to change the userid on which BAM is installed as the userid will be disabled after few days. I need to use a new UserID for BAM services. How do i acheive this ??? Please help!!
