Rebuilt library & now No Thumbnails in iPhoto

What is the fix in iPhoto when you have Events with no key photo present and no thumbnails when you open that event. The pictures are still in the library, double-click and they appear.  I option-clicked and rebuilt every aspect of the library but still no thumbnails.

Thanks, I will try it a few more times.  I've already rebuilt twice.
By saying "Back Up", is the Time Machine back-up sufficient or should I have another type of backup that is of every image (not just the iPhoto library database)?
My concern is that the Time Machine back-up is corrupt as well.  I believe this corruption is due, in part, to something that Faces did with several images.  It extrapolated one photo into multiple depending on the number of faces it detected.  So what is really a database of about 2,000 images is now about 10,000 images.  (no joke)

  • Rebuilt library, now 2 of everything

Hi Forum, For reasons I won't go into (irrelevant) I had a mishmash of photos in iPhoto Library. I then rebuilt the library ( only 2000+ photos) and ended up with 2 photos of just about everything. They are not duplicates as even though the name is the same, one copy is, for example, 2112 x 2816 and 2.7 MB, the other is 270 x 360 and 86KB. My question is, do I keep them both and is this normal and is there a reason for keeping them both. I can see that the small one is useful for emailing, the big one for achieving a good quality print.
Is it all going to become unmanageable once my library builds up as the copies do not even'sit' next to each other but rather sit in 'rolls'. It is tricky to find the copies of each photo, how often do others keep the 2 'sizes'?
    Machine Name:iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

one copy is, for example, 2112 x 2816 and 2.7 MB,

Are you making these observations from
INSIDE iPhoto or by using the Finder? (Your answer
    is VERY important.)</div>
These observations are from INSIDE iPhoto ie, I open iPhoto and the 'library ' of all my photos can be seen onscreen. It is NOT opening all those little folders.

  • Rebuilt Library Please Help

Hi. I rebuilt my Library because I was messing in the I Photo files when I shouldn't have and now when I go to view my pictures in full screen they don't show up as full screen pictures as they did before it's like a small picture right smack in the middle of my screen. Please what did I do wrong? Thanks.
P.S. It seems that the program changed my pixel sizes.

    I rebuilt my Library...
    How?
P.S. It seems that the program changed my pixel sizes.
No, it didn't. It seems like you rebuilt the library using the thumbnails that iPhoto uses for display, rather than the full sized pics from the Originas folder.

  • Rebuilt Library in iPhoto 5

    Hi guys,
My friend recently "lost" all of her photos on her Powerbook G4 and iPhoto wouldn't open. They were still being used for her screensaver but she couldn't find them anywhere in finder using spotlight.
I helped her to re-build the library using iPhoto Library Manager and the files were moved to another hard drive. (hers filled up before the end of the re-build at the first attempt.)
However, even though all of the thumbnails are now back in iPhoto and the albums are happily brimming with photos again, when she tries to browse the rebuilt library in finder, the directry structure has changed. The albums are divided by year as before, but now have random numbers rather than names and not all of the photos are there. Also, they have been moved to random places chronologically. (photos taken in 2008 now in 2003 folder etc.)
Does this need a 'Repair Permissions'? Will this work if the rebuilt library in on an external drive? Any other tips?
    Thank you in advance!

If you prefix a quote with a > then you'll get that italic effect. Good for clarity.
    Thanks.
iPhoto is a database. It's not an image viewer.
I had no idea, as on the surface it look like every other image viewer I've used, but point taken.
The point is simple: do you want to manage and work with the files or the Photos? If you want to work with the Files, use the File Manager - the Finder. If you want to use manage the Photos use iPhoto.
I would say the point is that, for other software I've used, "photo" and "file" are not treated as mutually exclusive. But guess this goes back to the database thing. I would question the amount of extra functionality that this "database" offers over a viewer though.
And this way you have exactly a two ways to find your photos: date taken or Filename.
If you use iPhoto you can search for that photo by date, filename, title, filename, keywords, camera model, lens, aperture and more, plus any compound of them.
I think we're at cross purposes here. You seem to be answering a different point to the one I was making. Mine referred to having to open iPhoto in the first place, so the search options offered within iPhoto are irrelevant.
If you were in email and using Apple's Mail programme then click on the Photo Browser as indicated above. Find the photo and drag it to the message window. Or use the Attach command as indicated in the first illustration above. Or use a media Browser. Or just drag and drop from the iPhoto Window or... or... or...
You mentioned Entourage earlier. Is the same the case for that?
If you have more than 100 photos, if they were taken on more than one date, there is no way the rooting through the iPhoto Library Folder is faster.
With the speed at which iPhoto a) loads and b) scrolls the thumbnails for large albums, I doubt that. (I'm speaking from experience here at least, if nowhere else)
Yes I'm aware what the word means. Here's another way of looking at it: Integrated throughout the OS. There is nothing negative about this. Don't want to use iPhoto? Don't. Don't want to use some of the features? Don't. They're opportunities, that's all.
Freedom to choose is all very well, but when the vast majority of casual or "domestic" users make the migration from PC to Mac, or from whatever photo "management" software they are using to iPhoto, I would wager that they are unaware of how much the integration of iPhoto will affect their ability to work in their chosen way.
(I think that, given the nature and number of similar post on the discussion boards, its a pretty safe bet.)
It certain isn't implicit when iPhoto's dialogue pops up to entice you to import your photos with it.
Depending on which version of iPhoto you use, there are some similar tools to Lightroom, but Lightroom is a pro level application, iPhoto is geared for the domestic point and shoot user primarily. There's a price difference too.
You're right, there is. And I think you get what you pay for. Tons of features and tools, and robust file management.
That said, if you find iPhoto difficult, good luck with Lightroom
I do find iPhoto difficult. However, the difficulty is of its own making.
As a user of Lightroom, I have absolutely no difficulty in using the file management part of the software, which is where the difficulties seem to arise for iPhoto. In fact, its probably more intuitive.
I've certainly not had any of the aforementioned issues regarding permissions, having the wrong font installed, disappearing photos and corrupting libraries by either browsing my file manager, or breathing too hard near the directory structure.
The main issue would now seem to be how to get the photos back safely from iPhoto into a viewer that does essentially as much as iPhoto, but with a lot less fuss.
Is drag and drop from within iPhoto (and having to copy everything from one location to another) the only way to do this?

Could someone help me restore my photos?  I was trying to "restore my database" in iPhoto when it shut down - now my thumbnails are distorted, logged under a new name, and when you click on a thumbnail it opens as another photo.  I was following another "helpful hint" hold down the option and command key and restart iPhoto - select the top three and you should be able to get rid of the dreaded exclamation point.  My MAC ran through the first two options dealing with thumbnails, but crashed during the "restore database"  step and now I have a mess.  Help, please.  Thank you.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Can't see all thumbnails in iPhoto library

Suddenly, when I tab over to the photos tab, I no longer see all the thumbnails in my iPhoto library. Some of them come up, most of them don't. I have tried trashing the iMovie .plist, run Diskwarrior, and rebuilt permissions. When I open iPhoto, all of the thumbnails are there and everything looks fine, only a problem when I try to access them through iMovie.
Also, when I log in as another user, everything seems to work fine!! Runnning iMovie 5.0.2 on Mac OS 10.4.3 Help!

Download and use  Find Any File  to search for a file named "Library6.iPhoto".  It's a file that is in every iPhoto library.  FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't, like invisible folders, system folders and packages.  If your library is somewhere on the hard drive FAF will find it.

  • Can't rebuild iPhoto library now

I've had iPhoto problems but throught I had them licked when I broke the library into smaller ones (by year) and began using iPhoto Buddy (very nice). The libraries are about 2000 - 4000 photos in size.
I've noticed that after backing up the libraries using Intego Personal Backup, I am able to open some libraries but not others. I have one for each year since 2000. The application just crashes on open. I've tried using option-open to select a library manually as well as iPhoto Buddy.
I went to rebuild the library using option-apple-iPhoto and iPhoto doesn't even open. Any suggestions? Any thoughts around using backup software? Doesn't make sense that that would have anything to do with it since it presumably is just reading files and not doing anything to them.
I've fixed permissions, trashed preferences file, run the application off a cloned drive, etc.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi David,
I don't think your problem is the backup software, but you never know.
    To go over your steps..
You used the Option key to switch to another library
The library did not open and iPhoto crashed. any error message?
You used Command Option to launch iPhoto to rebuild the last opened library and nothing happened.
Did iPhoto crash this time to?
-Check and make sure all the libraries are Read/Write for you
    iPhoto Library Info
    -Clean out all cache files

In case you want to create a new library for the ones that don't open...
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and choose it.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!

  • How can I assign iPhoto rebuilt library as a main one?

LarryHN is correct. The only way this message occurs is if the iPhoto Library database is upgraded to a newer version.
You could try holding SHIFT-OPT-COMMAND when launching iPhoto from the dock and checking only "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" and hope it restores the previous database prior to the upgrade.
If that doesn't work, you can install iPhoto '11 on your iPhoto '09 computer. If I understood the iPhoto '11 Mac App License agreeement correctly, you can install it on any personal, non-commerical computer you own running 10.5, 10.6 and 10.7.

Have you run the iPhoto Library Upgrader? You need to direct it to the location of your old iPhoto Library by clicking the "Choose Library" button in the lower right corner of the panel you are seeing when the upgrade starts.

  • What should I do about an icon, "Rebuilt Library" that appeared when I "grabbed" the top of my iPhoto window?

The icon appeared when I "grabbed" the top of my iPhoto window to move it across the desktop. I don't want to delete important files, and wonder what I should do about the icon.
    I am using Time Machine.

    Thanks LarryHN,
I have iPhoto version 9.4.3, and the "Rebuilt Library" icon is on the desktop.
Interestingly, when I closed iPhoto in order to perform the option startup, I got the spinning beachball and had to force quit—when I reopened, using the option key, a window did ask which library to use—I chose the rebuilt library.
I moved the "Rebuilt Library" icon to the iPhoto Library folder.
    Thanks again!
