Recall on batteries?

I just heard on the news that Apple is recalling 1.5 Million batteries.
Has anyone heard about this?
I'm wondering if my MacBook battery is recalled.
I do notice my Mac Book gets extremely hot.
I don't want my laptop exploding in my face.

Did you read page 27 of your MacBook User's Guide?
When you use your MacBook or charge its battery, it is normal for the bottom of the case to get warm. For prolonged use, place your MacBook on a flat, stable surface. The bottom of the case is raised slightly to allow airflow that keeps the unit within normal operating temperatures.
If your MacBook was sitting on your leather couch, it probably didn't have the air circulating underneath it and it could have overheated. Not all of the cooling features of the MacBook are active, some natural airflow is needed all around the computer.

  • Battery Recall

    Hi everyone.
I bought a first generation MacBook Pro (the original Core Duo 1.83GHz version) way back in June 2006 from the Apple Retail store near where I live in Meadowhall, Sheffield.
I have recently been noticing my MagSafe connector flickering when supposedly the battery is fully charged - i.e. it never stays on solid green any more - it flashes green and orange.
I have learned that Apple did in fact recall the batteries in the early MBP's and have discovered that my battery should indeed have been recalled and replaced.
Apple never contacted me about this issue and I was never aware of it until very recently, when this problem started to occur.
I would very much like to know how I could get this obviously faulty battery replaced? It is clearly one of those included in the recall (I've checked the serial number) and I also have an Apple Care protection plan on the MBP that doesn't run out for another 6 months.
Any help anyone who could give on how to get a replacement battery for my otherwise still fantastic laptop, would be greatly appreciated. I am somewhat disappointed in Apple for not notifying their customers of this issue, since they're usually very good at after sales service.
Once again, any help would be great.
    Many thanks,
    Gareth.

How many charge/discharge cycles are on the battery? If it's more than 300 they will probably tell you the battery is worn out and it's time to buy a new one.

  • USA Today Article - Battery Recall

So I caught the article in Tuesdays (Aug 15,2006) USA Today about Dell recalling laptop batteries. In the article it mentioned other companies included in the recall. Apple had 128,000 laptop batteries made in october 2004-may 2005. I was just wondering if anyone else had heard about this?
The issue at hand was that these batteries would get too hot and could cause a fire. Now I have not had a fire, but my powerbook sure does get toasty to say the least.
Any info on this would be great. thank you!
    eric

    PB = PowerBoook.
On the bottom, heat can be generated from the CPU, hard drive, and CD/DVD. That's why it's important not to use the PowerBook on anything soft, like a blanket, rather to keep it on a hard surface so air can circulate around it.
It's not unusual for a PowerBook to see temperatures into the 120 degree range, depending on what's processing and the heat of the room.

  • Qwerky MacBook Pro - LEMON?

I'm a first-time Mac user, and so I am still learning, but I have had difficulty with my Mac since I go tit. +*Has anyone experienced anything like this before (below)???*+
I purchased my MacBook Pro in August 2006 (Tiger, 10.4.11, 2 GHz Intel, 1GB Memory). Ever since then I have experienced what seem to be random, chronic issues with this Mac, even just within the first couple weeks of owning it. In the beginning, phone support was so-so and I usually attributed my issues to my lack of familiarity with the Mac system. Phone technicians usually would end up having me re-start my computer or change settings and sometimes this worked, but it seemed like the problems that I was observing were not normal....meaning, I shouldn't have to restart my Mac as often as I do, I +shouldn't have+ these regular problems with a new machine. Unfortunately I never kept a consistent log of all my issues and when they occurred or in what context, but here is a list of chronic problems I have experienced within the last 15 months since I got my Mac and an estimate of how frequently they have occurred. Also, they seem to occur during 'normal' activities when I am simply browsing the internet....trying to watch a DVD....typing up a document in MS Office....or leaving my computer alone (just some examples, nothing unusual):
    - Unable to view video on certain websites, such as CNN or YouTube (I would get a "?" or the Quicktime "Q" in place of where the video should play. First couple months, a Mac IT guy on campus couldn't figure it out and finally had me create an entirely new account and moved all files to this new account. No problem since)
    - Oftentimes will get the 'pinwheel' for unusually long amounts of time (First couple months this occurred whenever I tried to watch a DVD, this occurred when the DVD was inserted and the DVD program was initiated, or if the program did start OK, the pinwheel would appear if I 'interrupted' the viewing progress, like pausing the DVD or moving between chapters. Now this happens regularly, every couple of days, when initiating normal actions like closing a window, clicking on an icon on a webpage, force-quitting a program (which is another issue below))
    - I have to force-quit programs (altappleesc) because they will not respond. Occurred with iPhoto, Safari, MS Office (only a handful of times w/ each in the last several months). Several times when I have initiated a force-quit, the program to force-quit will be highlighted, I will hit 'Force Quit' and I get the perpetual pinwheel that never goes away, the program never quits, and I have to turn my computer off using the power on/off button.
    - My desktop picture randomly reverts to an old picture that it had been set to previously. Usually has happened when my Mac is 'idle' or the screen goes into 'sleep' (black) mode, but has also occurred when my Mac has been off, and I turn it on at the beginning of the day. Has probably happened a total of a dozen times (once, just yesterday).
    - My Mac shuts off randomly. No power surge, always plugged into the power cord (battery charging). The Mac just turns off, black screen, as if you had turned it off. Has happened two or three times total.
    - Optical drive oftentimes will not read CDs or DVDs - new Cds, burned CDs/DVDs, no scratches or smudges. I will insert DVD/CD and it sounds like the drive will initiate, it does this three times, and then spits the CD out. This happens regularly (daily), more often than not.
    - I receive an 'unexpected error occurred that could not be recovered from (-36)' when trying to watch a DVD (has occurred when I try to hit 'Play Movie' on the menu screen of a DVD, when trying to move between chapters, or in the middle of the movie - in all cases the disc surfaces were perfectly clean). Additionally, often times when trying to watch a DVD, the image has appeared staggered, slow and jumpy and not up-to-speed with the audio (which is unaffected).
    - System generally runs 'slow': words that I am typing (either in an email or in a document) lag several second behind my typing speed, minimized windows that appear next to the dock are slow to appear at full screen when I click on them (10-20 seconds lag)
    - System is slow to start up (1 to 2 minutes): when turning on the laptop, the white screen with the apple icon that appears before the user log-in screen appears for an unusually long amount of time. This has happens several times a month, most recently this morning. This screen appeared for literally 14 minutes and my log-in screen never appeared. I had to turn of the computer using the on/off power button.
    - I recently bought a WesternDigital external hard-drive (My Book Essential Edition, 250gb). In the last month or so, my Mac has stopped recognizing the drive. The external drive is still quickly recognized by other computers, but never appears on my Mac from any of my USB ports, and my Mac does not appear to be 'searching' for it either. Other devices (USB jump drives) still function with my Mac.
*+Am I crazy?+* I know independently each of these issues may not seem very unusual or significant, but these are chronic, and together are unacceptable for an $1800 machine. I have never heard of anyone having so many issues (many friends and departments at my university use Macs and are baffled by my problems). It is all-around just very qwerky and has been since the day I bought it, but has finally gotten to the point where I cannot imagine that these are all normal scenarios. Have I bought a LEMON?! It has never been dropped or experienced any extreme environments....
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated...

The first thing I would recommend is taking your MBP into an Apple Store and talking with one of the geniuses. During my first few weeks of owning my program, I found that I had to download Windows Media Player & Adobe flash player in order to play videos on certain sites. I will occasionally get a pinwheel thing that lasts, not "perpetually", but for a few minutes. I got my MBP in August of this year and I'd say this has happened 8-10 times, using my computer for ~6-10 hours a day. My dock has disappeared a handful of times and I had to get a new display because of dead pixels just one month after I bought it. About a week ago, I inserted a clean once or twice viewed DVD and got the same message as you've had. However it has only occurred once, so I wasn't too concerned. The point I'm trying to make is that there are some software problems that I too think are not fitting for such an expensive machine. However it seems like you have a lot of problems, so definitely go see a Genius at an Apple Store. Hopefully you got the AppleCare Protection Plan, because if not I think a visit is about $100. If you can't get to a store or mail it in to Apple for inspection...
-You could try to purchase an external optical drive because it seems like something is not right with yours.
-The slowness of the computer may be caused by CPU or memory intensive programs (some which you may not realize are running). To see if this is a problem, download the iStat Pro widget and when your computer gets slow, open Dashboard and check CPU and memory usage. Also, make sure you "Quit" programs instead of just closing them (I'm not an expert so I don't know if this makes much difference, but it's worth a try). I don't have any idea why your computer would start slow.
-Also, I believe there was a recall of batteries on certain MBP models. Check to see if your machine was affected by this recall. If so, this may be connected with your random shutdowns.
Macs are known for their simplicity, power-performance ration, being ascetically-pleasing and all-around great machines. They are not, however, known for being the most reliable machines. Consumer Reports gives them an "average" reliability. Even so, even the most reliable brands produce a few lemons. Your computer may be a lemon. Anyways, I believe you should take your MBP to an Apple Store and talk with one of the Geniuses there. Good Luck with fixing your problems!

  • ThinkPad T60p not getting started

    Hi,
My thinkpad T60p is not getting started. Whenever i switch on my laptop, the power and battery led glows for a second and goes away after that. And after that nothing happens. I tried by removing the battery for 1 minute and putting it back but nothing worked out. I got the same result of not able to start my laptop. My battery is fully charged.
Can anyone tell what could be the reason for this behavior?
    Thanks,
    Harish

    1) Lenovo recalled T60p batteries as it has lot of issues
check your laptop batter is recalled or not by using this link : http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=BATT-LENOVO
    2) remove your laptop battery and run the laptop with power connected & see if it started without any issues
in my case, it's working without battery and with battery i also had seen the same issue what you have. i got new battery from lenovo.
    Try your luck too...
    Thanks

  • New T61 will not power on unless plugged into AC Power

    Hello all,
I am a new owner of a T61 laptop and so far I love it.  Though, I have found something rather weird.  I cannot power on my laptop with just battery power.  I have to plug it in to power it on.  From that point on, I can run off of battery power.  I have a 9-cell battery.  Once the laptop is powered up, it reads as 100% battery power.  I would really appreciate any ideas or tips that anyone may have.
    Thanks
    Ryan

Sounds like a bad battery. We received a shipment of 30 T61's in which 17 of them had bad batteries straight out of the box. Exact same symptom as yours. You should contact your Lenovo or the store you bought your laptop from. Last year, Lenovo recalled defective batteries for T60s.

  • Battery glue is faulty+computer is 1 year old=I'm screwed

Hi folks, here's the deal: I have a MacBook Pro, 2.16 GHz Core Duo. Barely over a year old. My battery started acting funny, on occasion it would cease to work when not charging, so I took it out. A few days later the battery had ballooned out, the glue wasn't holding it together and the insides were practically falling out. I called Apple and of course they were no help because the 1 year warrenty is gone and my MacBook Pro is not on the already long list of recalled laptop batteries. I don't know if I should wait to see if there is a recall or buy a new one. I am frustrated because I payed $3000 for this thing and only a year later the battery is falling apart! I'm sorry but I am so sick of the Apple support team not even speaking to me for one second if I don't fork over $50!!! It is my understanding that most other computer companies have FREE support, why can't Apple give us a break?? why do I always feel like I'm getting the shaft from these people?

why do I always feel like I'm getting the shaft from these people?
    Could it be your approach???
Apple extended the battery warranty to two years for all Core Duo machines, as stated on this page. This is separate from the recall of 15" MBP batteries.
I have personal experience with this, as I have a 15-month old 17" MBP, no AppleCare, and certainly not part of a recall that affected only 15" units. And yet, two days ago I noticed a very slight bulge in my battery, 2 hours later I walked into an Apple Store, and ten minutes after that I walked out with a brand new battery, and all I had to pay was 25 cents for the parking meter...
Try again with Apple, be polite and firm, mention the above link, they will help you out...

  • Reference to the cycle posts with pics posted in this thread. Explain This!

Ok, I've been reading the posts on this forum, and noticed what people been saying about the mAh dropping on the batteries and so forth. Now the thing about my situation is that I've had my week 10 Mac Book Pro for about 4 months now. And I've gone through about 43 cycles (as of writing this post) and I use it alot. (pretty much everyday). Now the thing that I read in this post is that people been talking about how the the capacity drops from the original capacity. Mines used to be 5500. But now it's 5279. It's funny cause for a moment it said 5260 (like everyone else) if your wondering about how my current battery information (as of writing this post) here it is below.
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 5279
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 4352
    Amperage (mA): -1269
    Voltage (mV): 11959
    Cycle Count: 43
Now here's the thing. Something crazy I noticed. And i just had to add pictures. Cause when I noticed it... I was like *** is going on? I even had to take pictures of it.
2 Days ago I was using my mbp and when I dc'd he ac power, it told me that it calculated a time on it of 2:45 min. ( i had been running it off AC power for almost 2 weeks) And that was with the light being green on the magsafe indicating a full charge on it when I dc'd it. I was like aww crap. my bat cell must be dying. Now I let it Discharge till almost dead, and I put it back to charge for the night. Now today I was using it reading your post earlier and I just had to go on and see if there was something going on why my max time from it usually being 3:30 went down to 2:45, thinking maybe it was a battery just not indicating the right info and needed to do a discharge and back to full charge on it since i usually always have it plugged in to ac power, and it went up to 3:34. And then it just kept climbing. I had the MBP on for almost 30 min, with usuage and noticed the above info and just had to take pictures of it to prove it. Here are the pics at imageshack that i just personally took less than 20 min. ago and directly uploaded to imageshack
    http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/5485/dsc02178hf9.jpg

    http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/5259/dsc02183tl4.jpg
Now notice, I have the page to the original thread open in the back and it's showing the original thread that moved me to write this post. Now the crazy thing is that the time kept going up. Now I had the screen brightness set to medium. And airport has been on since I turned it my MBP. But it peaked to 4:24 or so with the MBP on for almost a half an hour. Now this is strange due to the fact that I've been using the stock bat on it since I got this MBP back in early May. I think i've made this as detailed as I can.
Now I've been writing this post for almost a half an hour, and it showing a time of 3:04 min as of writing this post. And I wasted almost 15 min. uploading the pics to the site. Can anyone explain why it is that the battery indicator is showing that its actually getting longer and longer and not only that, but i've NEVER had my mbp bat last this long. Not even when I first powered it up for the first time and did the bat calibration. I have'nt been working the processor to death, but it's just so strange. Furthermore, I have one of the bat that is on apples recall list, but I don't want to sent it in yet, till it's almost dead and then I really need a new bat. I'm gonna try to juice this one for almost the 1 year warrenty that this MBP came with and then about 2 months before send it in for a fresh bat. (trying to be slick and save some money and extend the use of my batteries since they ain't cheap).
Anyone out there got an explanation? Would love to hear it. If you need any further info, Just ask. I'll answer it.
Mac Book Pro 1.83 GHZ 512 Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.7)
Mac Book Pro 1.83 GHZ 512 Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    AirBruce,
This is normal behavior, and it has nothing to do with the reasons for recalling the batteries.
Your MBP will calculate estimated battery life as you use it. Every change in the sate of your MBP will affect the parameters used to calculate that estimate. For example, if you start out on battery only with a full charge, and you have your screen brightness turned all the way up, you might get an estimated time of 3 1/2 hours. If you then turn down the brightness but continue to use your MBP, the estimate will gradually be re-calculated, resluting in a longer estimate.
Launch some processor-hungry application, and the estimate will again go down. Sometimes very quickly. The indicated battery life is an estimate, and it is based on how much power your MBP is consuming at the time of the calculation.
    Scott

  • Battery shows 34% and the Macbook turn off

I am having a problem with my battery it shows that the battery has between 30% and 35% of charge but my macbook turns off and I can't turn it on until I plug the power. If I press to see if there is battery it flashes 3 lights.
I tried to upgrade the battery software but I already have the last version.
Is there a recall for batteries of macbook aluminium?

Your full charge capacity is far too low for just 98 cycles. Apple suggests that you should still have 80% capacity (perhaps 3600 mAH) at 300 cycles. "Verify the battery" is also a bad sign.
    Try resetting the SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
And if that doesn't change your information, call AppleCare and demand a new battery, as yours has experienced a failure beyond the normal expectations.
Be certain that after you get your new battery, you calibrate it regularly (every 4-8 weeks):

  • Bloated Battery -- Macbook Death??

Around June 2007, I got a Macbook 13", persuaded by my mac-savvy friends into joining the mac community. To say it was a great change would be an understatement. Unfortunately around June of last year, on a particularly hot summer day, I had my macbook charging while open, it went into sleep mode and then, (if I remember correctly,) it woke up and a dialogue box popped up and then it crashed immediately. Since then, the macbook would not power up, no sounds of gears or any sounds from the machine when trying to turn it on. Tried removing battery, holding down keys while trying to turn it on to reset it, etc.. -- totally bricked. I found out also that I had forgotten to get the extended applecare, so I figured I was S.O.L.
Flash forward, a few months ago, I gave my macbook to a friend to take a look at it, and he noticed that the battery was 'bloaty as f' and mentioned that there was apparently a recall on batteries with this bloated problem. Does anyone think that the bloated battery problem could have caused my macbook to brick itself? If this is the case, is there any chance that Apple would be willing to fix my macbook?
I have to say this situation really ruined the mac experience for me. Which is a true shame because going back to windows has been painful. But at least I've never had a windows machine brick on me unexpectedly. Awwww. I loved my lil macbook! T_T

Depending on how much it expanded, this is a possibility if it flexed the logic board enough to damage something. This is pretty unlikely, but not impossible. You'll need to touch base with Apple in order to find out if your battery was included in the extended battery replacement program (there was no recall). I believe the replacement program only applied to the original Core Duo machines.

  • MacBook type skips around

I have an MacBook using OS. When typing the type skips around all over the place. The only thing I do to correct it is re-type. Any ideas why this is doing this craziness?

You don't mention which MacBook you have, but a common problem, especially in the older white or black thermoplastic MacBooks 1,1 through 4,1 built 2006-2008 is that the removeable battery can bulge or swell enough to distort the topcase assembly (one piece containing keyboard, trackpad, and palmrests) enough that it causes keyboard and/or trackpad errors.
The original batteries are expected to have a useful life of about 300 charge/discharge cycles, or about 3 years.
Apple never formally acknowledged any problem, nor 'recalled' swollen batteries, although reading through these forums over the years, some users have received a replacement for a swollen battery while the computer was under Applecare.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If the battery is severely swollen, it may be difficult or impossible to put it back into the computer, once it is removed.
So if your battery still holds a charge and you absolutely need to use the computer powered ONLY by the battery without being plugged into an outlet before you have the opportunity to secure a replacement battery, you might NOT want to remove it right now.
It is easy enough to check to see if a swollen battery is causing the problem:
Turn off the computer, unlock and remove the battery.
Plug in the Magsafe power adapter and use it to power the computer, and turn it back on, with the battery still removed.
Try doing using the apps you normally use. If the problem is gone, it was the bulging battery.
If the battery visibly bulges or swollen, and problem goes away with the battery removed, you should replace the battery.
New replacement batteries from Apple are US$129.00. There are other less expensive vendors, some far less expensive. I tried a replacement battery from a reliable vendor of other Mac products and found that for the way I use my MacBook, plugged in a substantial amount of the time, and discharged only about once a month, the lower-cost replacement battery swelled sooner than the original (2 years and 150 cycles) versus 3 years and 500 cycles for the original, so I purchased another Apple battery to replace it.
If you have a newer MacBook or MacBook Pro designed without a user-removable battery, the battery can still swell and still distort the keyboard and/or trackpad enough to cause a malfunction. Then you should take it to an authorized Apple repair facility to have the battery condition assessed.

  • A1212 Macbook Pro Cooling Fan Speed / SMC / Service Battery

    Background:
I've owned my A1212 Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo since launch (Thanksgiving 2006 I believe). For some time now the temperature has been quite warm - more recently my right cooling fan has intermittently sounded like a jet engine and failed to speed beyond 1,500-2,000 rpm intermittently.
    1. I ordered the correct cooling fan for A1212 right and replaced.
    2. When I rebooted Macbook Pro here is what I see for temps in hardware monitor
    AMBIENT TEMP 31C/88F
    CPU A 44C 111F
    CPU CORE 1:36C/97F
    CPU CORE 2:39C/100F
"SMART DISK" — [DOES THIS MEAN THERE IS A SENSOR THAT IS NOT REGISTERING]
The hottest temp recorded is 109F/ CPU A temperature diode
The new cooling fan is majorly cooling the mac much better than prior fan.
    3. I can't find ANY way to stop the mac from running both cooling fans at 6,000rpm
    a) reset SMC (tried holding down power button 20 seconds after disconnecting battery
    b) reboot
    c) remove smcfancontrol
    d) use smcfancontrol
    e) monitor with temp monitor, hardware monitor, istat pro
    f) no runaway processes - not even hot
    4) I notice ( this was also showing up before install of new fan) in my battery icon it indicates "Service Battery" - while I do have a 4 yr old computer there was a recall on batteries so this battery is maybe 3 yrs old and I usually use computer plugged in.
I do not have my snow leopard boot dvd readily available to run hardware test on sensors, however techtool pro does not report any issues. I have not found any terminal commands to force the fan speed down nor any indication I have any apps that are accelerating it.
It appears that my fan speeds are accelerating shortly after power up - before OS X is even loaded completely - and never slow to normal speed except when mac is asleep.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO CONNECT THE FAN INVERTED (THE TWO PINS) MESSING UP ABILITY TO CONTROL FAN SPEED?
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I INADVERTENTLY BROKE SOME SENSOR "SMART"?
I am thinking more and more that this is hardware related like a sensor. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, while I don't have a Jet engine I have a very noisy mac

    Hi N,
SMART reports on a number of checks on the HD. I don't believe that's any part of the current issue.
I agree with you that my first inclination is toward a sensor issue; by default, if the sensor's are not reporting properly, the fans run full speed/6000RMP.

  • My Battery 'Exploded'

Exploded might be a bit of an exaggeration, but i cant think of any other way to describe it. See the pictures for yourself. Will my 3 year warranty cover this kind of damage, I don't really want to have to pay £100 for a new one.

yikes! i would think that apple would recall such batteries. This looks very dangerous and I think they'd want to know about it. Give them a call.

  • Battery freezes computer while charging and causes overheating.

I have an HP Pavilion dv2500 laptop. The battery for it overheats the computer, freezes the computer while attempting to charge at 100% (when I look at the battery controls it sometimes says it’s at 6%, 0% and then switches to 100%), and slows down the speed of the startup while plugged into the computer. When the battery is plugged in and freezes the computer the only way to shut it off is by unplugging the AC Adapter. The computer works fine with just the AC Adapter alone when the battery isn’t plugged in and doesn’t overheat or freeze. I’ve tried putting a fan underneath the computer and it doesn’t help with overheating for the battery.
I also tried contacting HP about the recall on batteries that they've had. They said that my PC didn't qualify when it's having problems specified on the page and the dv2500 series is listed on recall. Does anyone know what’s happening? I’m not even sure of the battery age myself; the computer is almost 2 years old and has been sent to the repair shop on several occasions last year with parts being replaced.
    This question was solved.

Test your AC adapter with multimeter make sure the output the same voltage and ampere as written on the adapter.
If your adapter fine, then its time to buy new battery, third party battery in ebay offers attractive prices compared to HP genuine part.

  • New battery won't charge

Hi, using an alu pbook 1.67 15"
A week or so back I thought my power cable had died. The indicator light stopped coming on. Just before buying a new one, I tried it again and it did start working again, although the battery no longer charged. As it was one of the duff recall replacement batteries I decided to buy a new one (think I've had it too long to complain to apple about bad recall). I inserted the new battery this morning (which turned out not to be a genuine one - thanks ebay seller) and my pbook worked fine off just battery poewr for a few hours.
When it died, I plugged the cable in but this new battery will not charge - status is 0% "battery is not charging". I've reset pram and pmu but still problem exists.
Pbook runs fine on battery alone - could it be that the cable is the cause of the problem - i.e. it works well enough to power but not well enough to charge the battery?

Hi Bgreg, many thanks for your response. I've just tried a different, known to be working adapter and still no charge.
There is prob a good 5mm of play in the power plug at the dc-in socket, so may well be the source of the prob (with this new cable the amber charge light stays constant while wiggling, my old charger flashed dark orange/amber).
I'll get to an apple shop and ask to try a working battery (do they charge for quick favours?) then will look into the dc-in card.
    Thanks again,
    M
