Receeived 17 inch MBP replacement for 15 inch - Differences

Having had 2 15 inch MBP's, I have now received a 17 inch.
Initial observations are impressive !
1. The top and lower case, left of the IR receiver are a good, tight fit with no gap. Infact the case is a snug fit all round.
2. The screen hinge feels more smooth
3. Heat ? What heat ?
4. Whine ? What whine ?
My initial conclusion is that Apple were really pushing the envelope with the 15 MBP and that things are much more comfortable inside the 17 inch. I guess the extra space in the 17 inch allows this.
The sound is so much better as well.
The 17 inch is the way it was supposed to be.

Yeah I have also had 2 15' MBP and they have had the issues. I got one of the very first 17' MBP and I haven't had any problem with it. I agree right out of the box the sound is fantastic and plus the 17' is much cooler than the 13' MB and 15' MBP.

kindly help what i need to do... will appreciate much...thank u
    my MBP specs:
    13 inch early 2011
    2.3 ghz intel core i5
    4 gb 1333 mhz ddr3
    mac os x lion 10.7.5 (11g63)
    itunes 10.7 (21)

    1. A 13" screen is awfully small to do any efficient editing. The 15" gives you significantly more on-screen real estate.
    2. All of the MacBook Pros can run FCE. However the graphics processor in the 13" model will limit some functionality with effects. See Tom's earlier comment.
    3. Not much difference. All these cpu's are fast. There will be more overall system performance gain from the quad core at the slower speed.
    4. FCE cannot use more than 4GB RAM anyway, so the 4GB that comes with every MBP is more than adequate. If you expect to use Aperture or CS5 then go for more RAM, otherwise there's not much reason to add RAM. You will be better off spending your money upgrading to the 7200rpm hard drive.
    5. Everything will be smaller on the high res screen; there are just more pixels (1680x1050) on the same 15.4" screen area. (I have a 15" MBP with the standard 1440x900 screen and it is beautiful.)

  • 13 inch 2.9GHZ MBP or 15 inch 2.3GHZ? for video editing

Hi, everyone. im looking to buy a new MBP but i don't know which one to buy, the 13 inch 2.9GHZ MBP or 15 inch 2.3GHZ? i will mainly use the computer for video editing and sometime photoshop. i'll be using Adobe Affter effect, and premier. i have a samsung and i think i already had enough of it. it takes me 40-60 min to render a 7 min video and if i have effects from after effects in it, it take even more to render my videos. im thinking about buying the 15 inch mainly beause of the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 512MB of GDDR5 memory. but i don't know if the money is really worth it. i have the budget to buy these computer, so the budget is not a concern, but i still don't want to throw the money around.
i also been thinking about the 15 Inch 2.6GHZ but i don't see that big of a jump from the 2.3GHZ. BTH forgot to mention i want to buy the non-retina Display MBP
Which one wold you guys recommend.

    that's an easy answer.
go with the 15' for what you'll be using it for.  it has it's own discreet graphics.
the 2.3GHz is better because of the quad core design.  especially true for video editing.
the 13' will also do what you want but slower because of the built in intel video which is driven by the processor and uses part of the system RAM.
if you're not worried about speed and are more concerned about portability, then you can stick with the 13'.
whatever, you decide to buy, you'll be happy with either macbooks.  just make sure you max out the RAM for your purpose.

  • Would it be possible/difficult to replace 15 inch MBP Speakers?

Let's face it, the speakers on the MBP suck and I just found out that I have a defective right speaker on my Week 22. I thought the sounds was bad and then I saw another post on it and tried the left vs. right thing and ohhh yeah the right one is definitely messed up.
Still I have to wonder if it would be possible (perhaps already been done) to completely swap them out with some better notebook size speakers? Any takers or suggestions?
BTW. Have you seen that you can pick up a new pair of MBP speakers for under $20 at ifixit.com. Twenty whole dollars, now that is a quality pair of speakers!!!!

    Hi cyber,
Here is a link to iFixit.com which shows you the whole procedure for taking apart a MBP................

  • Best combo 15 inch MBP

Looking into getting a 15 inch MBP.  Want to order it online because I want the hi-resolution display.  The thing is that I'm looking to maximize the longevity, power, etc of the MBP and wanted to get some advice on the best customization options for it.  Basically getting the most out of my money (that excludes getting max everything :-) ).  I am looking for a desktop replacement which would be my main workstation holding all my media (music, movies, pics etc.). I don't do anything serious like graphic design or things of that nature to kind of give you an idea of what type of customer that I am.  Hopes this makes sense and your input is much appreciated.

awesome thanks for the input.  The anti-glare really makes that much of a difference huh?
A laptop is portable, exposed to many different environments.
You want to use the anti-glare MacBook Pro near the pool while watching the kids?, no problem.
You want to use the anti-glare in class or at the office with overhead lights or bright windows you can't control, it's no problem.
Glossy screens look good in the stores, but they are not practical to use in the real world unless used in a darkened, reflection controlled environment.
Desktop machines like iMac's, people can place them in a dark corner to reduce reflections, but a laptop one can't change the environment everywhere they go.
The "anti-glare films" people try to place on their glossy screen laptops afterwards are expensive, bubble, peel and collect dirt around the edges, requiring their occasional replacement. Makes the Macbook Pro look like cheap PC junk.
The "wow factor" of  "black bezel" and "oh shiny" screen of glossy MacBooks wears off in about 3-4 days, and then after that you perhaps impress a few of your friends.
So lets say 5 days of "wow factor" and then your down to using the machine as a tool as intended for the next 3-5 years, your not going to care after that if the bezel is metal or black, your going to want to use the machine with as little hassle as possible.
With glossy screen laptops, people make all sorts of physical adjustments in classrooms and offices to try to avoid the reflections, they sit funny, slouch, scrunch etc., tilt the screen in weird ways and so forth.
Many people complain of eyestrain and headaches from using glossy screens for long periods of time. On a anti-glare screen, one can use it for 10-20 hours a day and be just fine.
The high res of the new anti-glare MacBook Pro screens are really nice, you should take a look as Apple has them in the Stores, it's not the "dull matte" look of previous computer screens which made people attracted to the glossy ones in the first place.

  • Monster iTV Link for 13-inch MacBook and 12-inch PowerBook

Does anyone knows or the Monster iTV Link for 13-inch MacBook and 12-inch PowerBook even work with the imac intel-based mini-dvi port?
    hp   Windows XP

I went with the crucial 512 SSD.  It will push your budget just a tiny bit more as with tax and shipping it came to about $834 but oh man what a difference this makes!  My MBP sprang to life with this SDD... Everything simply pops open instantly.
    www.crucial.com
On transferring, I suggest the following:
    Get a copy of SuperDuper
Buy an external case for your internal drive.
Install SuperDuper on your current HD (before swapping)
Perform the HD/SSD swap, so your SSD is in the MBP, your HD is now in the external case.
Plug in the external HD and power up holding down option.  You should be presented with a choice of boot drives (DVD and your external).  Boot off your external.   Once OS is loaded, use Disk Utility to format and initialize your SSD.  BECAREFUL that you initialize the SSD and NOT the external HD!!!
Now run SuperDuper, clone from the external to the internal SSD.  It might take an hour or so to do this.  When complete.  Power down, disconnect the external and reboot.  If you've done everything right your computer should come up on the SSD but basically will look exactly like your old drive.
You're good to go.  Use it a few days and make sure everything is good, then you can format your external and use it for general purpose storage!
I'm not sure this will work on the 13" but these guys:  www.mcetech.com make a bracket that you can remove your internal DVD and install your old HD inside.  This way you have your SSD + your old HD installed at all times.  You move your DVD to an external case.  I did this in my MBP 15 so now I have basically a 1 TB laptop.  My main drive is the SSD but for storage of stuff I don't use all the time I have the HD which is also 512gb.  Pretty cool.  For me I didn't use the internal DVD that much so having it in an external case was just fine.

  • UPGRADING RAM IN 2011 13 inch MBP i7

Can I use the 2x4GB RAM pieces from late 2010 13 inch MBP to upgrade my new 13 inch MBP i7
only difference I can see is that old ones are rated 133 GHz and new one is 166GHz  - please advise before I try this.

Thanks for that - would it make much difference using the older RAM anyway in the new machine - would the 200% size improvement overcome the small speed difference ?   Or is the result too drastic to make it worthwhile ?

  • 13 inch mbp or mba

Hi I was going to get a laptop for high school and could not decide between the 13 inch MacBook air with the i5 8 gigs of ram and 256 gb of storage or the 13 inch mbp i7. I would need this laptop for the next four years and I'm not really into upgrading my machine but if I have to I can. I will be using my laptop for some small video and photo editing, some graphic desighn and CAD, web browsing, light gaming ( minecraft), and a lot of word processing.what I'm asking you guys is which computer do you think is best for me? I like the speed, weight, looks, and feel of the MacBook air. But the MacBook pro has a more powerful CPU and a much larger hard drive yet it is slower, this machine also seems to rate higher in geek bench and I was wondering if a thousand point difference there is extremely noticable in real world conditions. Thank you ahead of time for your consideration - Chas

if you are going to bringing back and forth from school get the air.  if you are not there is no point to the air unless  you want that slight boost of speed with small ssd

  • Replacement 17 inch Review (week 33)

Just wanted to let you know that my week 33 17 incher is actually really well built. So far so good. It looks good, no warping and no uneven display like my previous. THe latches work as they should and I have no whine on battery. Although I have a low hiss on AC. But that's fine. Almost all my 17's have had the hiss on AC
Anyone care to comment on their 17? Or have any questions?

My 17-inch MBP is also very nice. I've had no issues: display lies flat, latch works nicely, screen is evenly lit (for the most part), no whine on battery, etc.
However, I do hear the faint hiss on AC power as others have described. It's barely audible in a quiet room, though, so I really have no complaints. Not sure what all the fuss is about, or maybe I just got lucky?

  • How much memory can use my early 2011 15 inch MBP ?

I'm looking to buy new memory for my early 2011 15 inch MBP because it's running way to slow ( i have 4GB memory). I want to put 16 GB on it. Will it support it?

I too want to add memory to my 15" MacBook Pro, early 2011.
It has: 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7. Currently I have 8GB installed. I saw this post and thought yahoo! HOWEVER, when I look on Apple's site it says no. That the memory is tapped at 8GB. I really hope to go to 16 GB.
Here is the link I found:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1270
So, since this post says the laptop will support 16 GB and the above says only 8 GB. Please help.
    Thanks,

Also, sometimes when i turn it on the screen gets fragmented, like in the image. Does anyone have any solution? thanks.

  • I got an 11 inch macbook air for christmas and now i am regretting not getting the 13 inch is there any way i can upgrade to the 13 inch still ?

i got an 11 inch macbook air for christmas and now i am regretting not getting the 13 inch is there any way i can upgrade to the 13 inch still ?

okay well another question the track pad on my 11 inch mac got stuck and wouldnt work and i took it to the apple store and had a tech look at it and he said it was working and i got home and it still wouldnt work so i took it back again to another tech and he said the guy before didnt fix it right and he said it was broken and that i needed a new track pad and he said he would replace it but they didnt have any trackpads in the store at the time but he fixed it enough that it barely works but he said i needed to come back to get a new trackpad because he fixed it enough that it would only work for a short period of time, so i went back the other day to another tech and told him and he said that since it still works they wouldnt do anything about it. but it barely works and barely clicks down should they fix it since the one tech told me it will only work for a short time and that if i came back they would replace my trackpad ? i have apple care and i am still under the 1 year warranty.
