Received new battery - Now MBP runs much hotter

My old battery had no poblems - MBP had no problem, now with new battery it is running much hotter and fans come on big time. Had no noise at all with first battery. Guess I'll call Apple and find out what's going on.

I'm trying out the new battery (normal use of MBP is with line current and external kvm). On battery power the CPU temp stays in the fifties -- much hotter when plugged in for some reason. Also, on battery, there is a new, faint but noticeable noise, not steady but about one-second bursts with a microsecond inbetween, so 50-60 Hz. I'm thinking of visiting a genius.
BREAKING NEWS: As the fuel gauge went down below 1:10 hr remaining, the menu bar icon shifted to "Calculating", with a red bar at the left end. System profiler shows all zeros in the Power submenu. Something is definitely amiss.

  • Installed new battery now fan runs

I have an older MacBook circa 2006. I recently installed a new battery. Now the fan runs occasionally while it never did it before. When I don't hear the fan it is running at 1500rpm and when the fan is running it is approx. 4500 rpm. Is this normal behavior? I was concerned because the fan hadn't run much before but my battery had been dead for a long time. I always use it on a hard flat surface and never on my lap. Thanks for your advice.

You might try a SMC reset. One of the things it can repair is:
    Fans
The computer's fans run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated.

  • So is it just me, or is Mavericks a bust?  My MBP runs way hotter now. I don't have time for trial and error solutions. Is Apple offering a way to downgrade back to Mountain lion? I want out of Mavericks ASAP.

So is it just me, or is Mavericks a bust?  My MBP runs much hotter since the upgrade. Why do I need ot sit around watching Activity Monitor, manually controlling my fans, and deleting extensions that I enjoy using. Don't even get me started on the Quicktime/Mov issues. I had none of these issues on Mountian Lion. Searching these forums, I see it's not just me. Why would Apple release a new system w/o peoperly testing it on MBPs?
I don't have time for trial and error solutions. I've tried the obvious ones. No help. Is Apple offering a way to downgrade back to Mountain lion?  Or better yet, a Mavericks update that adresses these problems? As of now, I want out of Mavericks ASAP.

Nobody owns a ML install disc - ML was only ever distributed as a download from the Mac App Store.
If you have a Time Machine backup, you can boot into recovery mode and restore from your Moutain Lion TM backup volume.  If you have a system clone, then you can boot from the clone, and just clone ML back onto your internal drive.
Going back to your previous installation from a backup should be trivially simply if you have the backup in hand.

  • After 10.6.7 (special MBP) update, MBP (early 2011) running much hotter

After installing the 10.6.7 MacBook Pro special updater, I note that my MBP is now running much hotter -- on the order of 20 to 30 degrees F (was running usually around 100 to 110 under load, now running 130 to 140 with just Safari open).
In Activity Monitor, nothing is using a lot of CPU % but I have one kernel task mopping up 78 threads and 515.9 MB of memory (consistent over at least the last 20 minutes as I check back on it). Parent process is noted simply as "kernel task (0)".
I've done a few restarts and some usual housekeeping -- any clues as to what's up and how I can see exactly what this process is?

I have a late 2009 MBP and I have noticed that just surfing the internet has caused the machine to run 20-30 degrees hotter. It used to hover around 40C (according to iStat...obviously it would climb under a load) when I was bumming around the net (no videos) and now it is anywhere between 60-70C doing the same stuff. I didn't really notice it till the other day when all I was doing was working on some bash scripts so at that point it was under very little load and it just seemed quite warm.

  • New battery lowers MBP temperature??? Am I going insane?

I got my replacement MBP battery yesterday and, after installing and fully charging it, began using my machine for a long work session.
Previously, the machine ran at an average temperature of 57-59 degrees C, but now it's running at an average of 40-43 degrees C. I haven't changed my useage of the machine in any significant way or stopped using any high-intensity applications, so I'm at a total loss to explain the nearly 20 degree temperature drop.
Surely there can be no connection between the battery and the temperature of the MBP, but I have to trust the evidence of my temperature monitor software and the fact that I can now comfortably rest my hands on parts of the machine that were very warm before.
Has anyone else noticed this or have I totally lost touch with reality? I thought I'd ask here before I ran off to my therapist and asked to be committed.
On edit: I didn't mention that my battery was replaced under the recall scheme, so I'm wondering if maybe the early batteries were, in part, responsible for the machine's high temperature.

Well, I guess I'm one of the lucky ones... I have a mbp week 11, and the machine has worked all day very cool, about 55°C max (temperature monitor, CPU) doing only light stuff like internet browsing, adium and playing music. I just finished some backing up and the mean CPU temp rose to about 65°C, but it's now after 10' down to 54°C. So it's not one of the Cookbooks and for that I'm glad!
The system freezes from time to time, but ever since I made an archive and install, things are working much better.
It has the whine though, but I keep it quiet with ShhMBP. Some people say this kills battery life...I get almost 4h now with the new battery...so I'm very happy with this.
So like I said before, now that the temp is down (new battery) and the whine is gone (ShhMBP), I'm very pleased with this machine!
I just contacted the local Apple store to hear what they do with mbp's that whine and how long it takes to replace the logic board...I still haven't decide if I'm gonna take it in though...it's kinda hard to live without a computer.

  • MBP runs noticebly hotter after upgrades

I am able to monitor the various temperatures around the MBP using a program called TemperatureMonitor. I recently upgraded from 2 to 4 GB of RAM, as well as upgrading my home router to a N from a G (at roughly the same time). I'm not sure what might have done it, but I have noticed that my CPU temps are quite hotter than usual. Before the 2 upgrades my CPU temps would be in the 50s, 60-70 under load. Now, just running firefox and mail, my CPU temp will hover around 75-80. Does this sound normal to anyone else. I was under the impression that RAM upgrades shouldn't place any additional loads on the CPU, and I can't see why connecting at 144 MBits over 54MBits would change anything either.

    Pacman9889,
Its really quite simple. More ram equals slightly MORE power usage. More power means MORE HEAT. This has happened to some degree on every laptop (Apple and Others)I've ever upgraded. I will however agree that in most scenario's, its a bit MORE pronounced on the Mac's. I (personally) attribute that to the way mac laptops are cooled not being as aggressive as on most pc laptops (with actual INTAKE and EXHAUST vents, and higher running fans by default). I personally could care less about the noise, so I use smc fan control on my macs to balance it all out to MY liking/comfort zone. To each their own...
    Hope this helps!

  • New battery for MBP wont fully charge

I have a new battery for my mid 2011 macbook pro 13". I installed it and since then i have had some problems.
first i installed the battery, it came with 67%, i let the MBP go all the way to the red and shut itself off, thinking this was the best way to calibrate it.
I plugged the mag safe charger in and let the computer charge
come back to it the next day and its at 0%, click on the battery icon and it says battery isnt charging (clearly is)
restart computer and it starts showing the charge, HOWEVER when i click on the battery icon it sill says not charging, but my light on charger is green, my battery icon has the charge look...
I have seen other threads where they recommend a SMC, i done one and it made my monitor go from the wallpaper  to a white screen, i let it play out for 2 minutes before restarting it and it was normal....what does that mean?
im in desperate need of some help and piece of mind i didn't just spend top $$$ on a bum battery, and FYI im 2 hours from a apple store so i try to do all my mac work myself, or with this assistance of youtube.
    Thanks

It says replace now, but I just bought the battery yesterday.

  • Installed new battery, now computer is extremely slow

    Hello,
My battery was DEAD, and I just installed the new one today. (It isn't the one from apple, but Read reviews that this was good so I got it). But I installed the new battery today, and every since, my computer gets really slow and starts to lag a ton after 5 mins of starting up. I've never had this problem before. I tried the smc reset (not sure if it is actually resetting). I did a pram reset as well. I also have a lot of space. It is even slow and laggy when I am not running any programs. Once I start a video, for example on skype, or on youtube, it lags like crazy.
    Please help me fix this.
    Thank you!

Try having a technician install a battery made for your device.
Using things not made for your computer (or approved by the manufacturer) is a poor way to save money.

  • New Battery, Now Powerbook restarts after sleep everytime

So as the subject says I bought a new battery for my 17 inch powerbook about a month or so ago. Since I started using it almost anytime I let the computer go to sleep while an application is running it will require me to restart when I wake it from sleep. This is more of an annoyance than anything but it would be very helpful if there was a fix for this.
    Thanks alot!

Im not sure where exactly I got the battery from (it was some eBay store)

    Hi there
I got my new battery this afternoon! Haven't use it yet! I was woundering if apple have some kind of "battery guide" for maxiumum performance? Like, charge it fully up and drain it 3 times or calibrate it first time, and so on?

  • Batterly Bloat...now MBP Runs Sloooooowwwwwww

My first post on an Apple forum.
Have a 15" MBP that I bought about a year and a half or so ago. Yesterday I was typing on it and it was wobbly. I looked to see if it was sitting on something. Turned it over and to my dismay the battery looked like it blew up. I instantly removed the battery.
I did some Google searches on this and found that other users have experienced this. Many on these very forums have experienced this.
I see that Apple has closed its battery replacement program for bloated batteries a month ago. ***?! Why close it at all? If this is an on-going issue with some users of these batteries it needs to remain open for such occurances.
    ANYWAY...
I haven't called AppleCare yet and I'm not optimistic that Apple will even replace the battery since I'm six months past the warranty period and I didn't get the three year service plan.
As if this wasn't bad enough, th most alarming issue is that now my computer is running slow. When I mean slow I mean that when I encode a video with h.264 it takes three or four times longer to render. Even worse is that all of my 720p h.264 movies are choppy and virtually unplayable. Forget about watching a 1080p!
Is this a CPU related problem? I know the new MBP's use hardware to decode h.264, but the older ones don't.
This all happened after I installed the new firmware Apple released that was supposed to "fix" fan-related issues.
    Any advise?
What torques me off is that this is my first Mac and the darn thing cost me $1,999 plus tax. This isn't some chumpy DELL netbook.

Very interesting that a laptop will run slower on AC power than a battery. Not an engineer, but it seems the opposite would make sense.
The CPU will sometimes (for brief periods) require more power than the AC adapter can provide, and the additional power is drawn from the battery; the OS throttles back the CPU to avoid this situation when running on AC power +with the battery removed+.
    See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2332
Oh, isn't there a three-finger salute you can press when booting that will sort of "reboot" the MBP and make it run better?
Holding down the Shift key at startup is Safe Mode, which runs some disk checks and disables some extensions. But that's for troubleshooting, not optimization. There's really no need to 'optimize' the Mac OS - it does that on it's own with periodic Unix maintenance scripts, it automatically defrags files smaller than 20 MB on the fly, etc. To borrow your phrasing, this isn't some chumpy Windows OS.

  • New 2.8GHz MBP so much cooler than 1st gen -- a real laptop!

Received my 2.8GHz MacBook Pro a few days ago. No early adopter regrets whatsoever. As others have posted, this time Apple really nailed it. It was a replacement for the first-gen Intel MBP, purchased in March 2006.
One of my first tasks was to transcode about 100GB of Apple Lossless music files in 320kbps AAC files. I had the MBP churning away 10+ hours with a 50% CPU load or higher. If I had tried this on my old MBP no way could I keep it on my lap, and I would get third-degree burns if I touched the case above the Fn keys (I once measured the temp of there at 138F).
No such problem with the new MBP. The fans came on and the machine got very slightly warm, but I could have kept it on my lap, no problem. No hot spots on the case, either.

My 2.53 MBP idles between 40c and 55c,
My older one typically stayed in the 40s
If I use the 9400m GPU, the temps are in line with my older GPU, so my new machine is running a bit hotter but it seems to be attributed to the GPU

  • Windows 7 64-bit w/Bootcamp 3.1: GPU runs much hotter than on Bootcamp 3.0

The graphics chipset driver update between Bootcamp 3.0 and 3.1 has left my graphics card working a lot harder and hotter. Examining (using SpeedFan 4.40) the temperature sensors shows that the graphics chipset never drops below 55c, even during periods of idleness. Additionally, fans are running at an audible level (the usual 2k RPM is not within hearing range).
This behavior did not occur on the Bootcamp 3.0 graphics drivers. Fans rarely ran audibly except during load, and the temperatures were much lower.
I've tried a SMC reset (shfit-ctrl-opt and power button while the laptop is off) with no impact.
Anyone else experiencing this issue, or have any suggestions?

    Hello BennB,
    Have you checked compatibility?
    Just an FYI for you.
It is always best to check with the software manufacturer FIRST. They will tell you if they have tested the product and the version, as well as whether or not it will work with Windows 7.
Check out the Windows 7 Compatibility site: (There you will find out about hardware and software compatibilty.)
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/en-us/default.aspx
There is a pulldown from which you can choose "hardware" and "software".
There are also some great articles, instructional videos and such to help with your Windows 7 at our Springboard site:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/default.aspx
In any event a lot of the times, Vista drivers will work in lieu of Windows 7 drivers, however, it's not 100%!
As stated previously, it's best to have the Windows 7 certified drivers installed.
Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/9fhdl5 . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to check the threads available there for additional assitance and support.

Just was given a Macbook by a friend. Macbook runs FINE when plugged in, but will not run with battery. Most obvious thought in MY mind was battery.  Purchased brand new apple battery and installed and it STILL wont run on battery power . Tried that reset thing( removing battery and holding on button down 5 secs)  that was posted and still no results.   WHAT GIVES?

by the way, replacing the motherboard cost about $55 if u do it yourself, which i would rather buy a new one if thats the case.
and sorry that i didnt do a proof reading, of which lots of error in my post.
