Receiving contact requests.

Alright so my friend once lived in Australia with me she then moved to America. I only use Skype to chat with her but for about 4 weeks now I have been getting contact requests NON STOP from creepy old men claiming to be "U.S Army Veterans" I am really creeped out. I have blocked all of them. I have changed my privacy settings but it still hasn't stopped them. I have no clue who they are and I am really creeped out. How can I stop this?!

This is an old problem http://community.skype.com/t5/Security-Privacy-Trust-and/Strangers-keep-contacting-me/td-p/620247/pa...
I have the same issue. I have always had all my privacy/IM/Video settings set to contact only. I do not have an MSN account so the crossover issue mentioned in the thread I linked, whatever that was, isn't it.
I asked the last one how he got my contact details. After lying that I'd given them to him, he absolutely refused to answer.
First he said I must have given him the info in another group (I don't know him from Adam, very creepy shot-in-the-dark from him, since I DON'T use skype except to call my family's landlines in the UK via subscription - if that was true, why not open with a "Hi it's xxx from site yyy"?)
I said that was impossible, he said, "Hmmmn. Don't know."
I said, "How did you know what contact name to add? Go on, I promise I won't be cross "
He said "I don't know what to tell you."
At that point I thanked him for his time and blocked him.
I don't get a lot, and it's strange how they do _seem_ to be army. I don't for a second think they are. There are scamers out there using US army guys faces to borrow credibility to get you to talk to them.
In which case, they are probably finding contact names by doing to places like dating sites and running through the username lists they find there. If your skype contact id is not unique to skype, you can be contact by guesswork, basically. Skype can't fix that.
Skype CAN fix that the last one IM-ed me and he's not in my contact list, contrary to my provacy settings. That suggests there's an exploit in skype's security that is being hacked, possibly by an organised effort since the type of contact is so consistent.
My advice to average user bearing the brunt of this - since we are the actualy target and what they want is money - is to save the conversation, then block and report, and post the convo here if you can so the community can get a handle on how widespread this is.
Never, ever give out personal identification info or money out online, not even if the person convinces you absolutely that you two are in love. They contact you, get real info and a background check but don't just take thier word for anything.
Ref: http://usmilitary.about.com/u/ua/justicelawlegislation/Are-You-A-Victim-Of-A-Romance-Scam.htm Scroll down to the name nj flinn - that post talk about use of army guys names in scams on skype.
Good luck and stay safe,
Mulberry

  • Cannot send or receive contact requests

    [Topic title edited by Aimi]
I'm sure there alrady is a topic for this as I see Internet full of complaints about the same issue (without no decent solution!) but here is once again my version...
I have an old Scype account which I haven't used before. Yesterday I set up the Skype desktop client (Win 8.0), the latest version if it (checked and no newer updates available), and linked my existing Skype account with my Microsoft account. Had no connections at that time and since that (during today and yesterday) I've made 3 contact requests but not one of them can see my requests!! So, we tried it viceversa: they sent me the request - same result: I cannot see any of the requests!! I have checked the settings (one solution for exmple suggested that I should allow IMs from anyone - I did - no help). I also tried the app for mobile. Same result. Also tried to uninstall/re-install the Skype client. No help.
I don't need instructions how to search/add contacts - I know how to do that, the contacts requests just don't go through!! Help needed. Annoyed.

So I have windows 8.1 and using the latest desktop version of Skype. When I tell someone to add my Skype , I never get a notification or an option to add them. It has been happening to pretty much anyone who wants to add me. I also made sure in the notifications tab that contact request was checked. I can add other people fine its just hard to get in contact with them and asking for their Skype username so its more convenient giving them my Skype username. Anyone could please help me. Thanks!

  • I am not receiving contact request

Hi, My friend is using a paid version of skype and she cant seem to add me. She said she has sent the request but i have yet to receive any, this does not only happen to me. She cant even add her cousin as well help!

Hi, Can you clarify what you mean by paid version? the Skype software itself is free and if she has paid for it then she is likely not using Skype. Assuming that she is using skype can you please recheck that she has added the correct skype name or microsoft account to her contacts? Thanks

  • Not receiving contact request

Hi All, I am using skype for mac, my friend has just got skype for business. She tried adding me and i cant seem to recieve her add request. I tried searching for her and i cant find her as well can someone help me out please i have checked that i am using the most updated version

Hi, Thanks for posting, as i understand it for you to add her and her to add you then her business has to have enabled it in their Skype for Business Server settings, see adding external Contacts for guidance. If she believes this has been configured and her System admin confirms the same then can you provide some examples of what you are using to search for her (please do not use actual ids). Kind regards

Let's get something quite clear. Even if you have your privacy settings for contacts only, these US generals contact requests get through. Blocking them does nothing to stem the flow of others. So many customers write in, do the right thing, but skype does nothing to sort the problem. Its so depressing. If only we had a choice so we could stop using Skype. Microsoft get your act together and DO something.
Unfortunately, the Privacy Settings in Skype can only prevent/stop unwanted calls/instant messages from non-contacts, not contact requests (which now also appears in the IM box/window).

  • Unwanted IMs and Contact requests

    Hello,
I'm receiving contact requests and IMs from strangers.
I've double checked all my privacy settings and they are all set to "receive from contacts only".
Where else can I go?  Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

Same here.. .apparently skyp doenst give a flip about it...
Ive asked this question 20 times (usually under other names per it was actually per clients..
This is the first ever under my own id.
I regularly have to deny 'requests' twice a week and at times more.
I currently have hundreds of requests blocked..   Im getting tired of it...
Unfortunatley skype is the only way I have to contact certain friends who are using skype as a workaround per them not being able to afford regular phone use, but have nearly unlimited internet options.
But this particular issue, as soon as skype gets competition, if not already... Im gone.
I had hoped skype workalikes would do it, but they mainly are skype passthrus.
I relize I can make myself invisible and that likely solves the problem.
BUt I need those who are my contacts to see that I am in fact online.
So while invisible might do... its not realistic....to me thats a fake workaround.
Contacts should be able to see you if they are contacts...period, even if invisible

  • Receiving unsolicited contact requests.

I only use Skype for chats & video calls to my relatives in Australia. Normally I do not receive unsolicited contact requests. I have had them before and they seem to follow either new Skype updates or my Skype activity. I video called OZ last week and I am now receiving 6 or 7 unsolicited contact requests from young women in Africa/Asia each day now?Yes my settings only allow my contacts to contact me and yes I block all the unwanted requests; but it is annoying and upsetting because I do not know how & why it happens and I cannot stop it.Apparently neither can/will Skype? My apologies for being repetitious, I'm just blowing off steam.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE. SAME ISSUE JUST STARTED JULY 2015. IF SKYPE DOES NOT PUT IN A FILTER THEY ARE GOING TO LOOSE A LOT OF CUSTOMERS AND THEIR REPUTATION.
THIS IS LIKE GETTING ANNOYING TELEPHONE CALLS FOR DONATIONS EVERY DAY BY HUNDREDS OF CALLERS. WILL SKYPE GET THE MESSAGE? EVERYONE KEEP BEATING ON SKYPE!!!!

  • New contact requests not showing up.

Normally under contacts on the left new contact requests appear now they are not. Skype version 5.6.0.143 Mac osx version 10.5.8 I tried deleting all remenants of skype under application support and redownloading yet nothing. Please help!!

I asked an overseas friend to be on Skype, but he did not show up in my contact list. He received an email from Skype and carried out the instructions, I am on his contact list.
I asked him to send me an invitation - it came - I accepted - All is well now.

  • We need help with unwanted contact requests

In the last 2 weeks, I have received 13 unwanted contact requests that I have blocked, which is roughly 2 unwanted contact requests for every Skype message or call I'm interested in receiving.
All of my privacy settings are set to "Contacts" and I do not publish my Skype ID on LinkedIn, the only social media site I use.
    What else can I do?

    Hello Gilad,
    Thank you for your contact!
The script does not work, no error message comes up, I am sure it`s a
stupid mistake but neither my boss nor I are programmers.
Please have a look at the form enclosed, the field in question (field
name "calculated currency value", red border) is on the top right  and
refers to the field "FX" (field name "FXname 4800") below (blue border)
Both fields are in number format so I don`t know why this doesn't work,
    what else can it be?
    With kind regards
    Ursula

  • Contact Request

How do I know if somene has received a contact request?
A friend, who is not computer literate at all,  denies receiving my contact requests.
He says he has sent requests to me but I haven't received them.
Is there a way to check this?

There is no way to verify a contact request, apart from the requestee acceping it. Make sure you both are on the same version of Skype, and be sure you are sending the request to the correct account (typos happen).
    http://www.skype.com/go/getskype
Some users have reported that resending requests do help in some instances. Also beeing online at the same time, with status set to online (green icon with checkmark), might help.
You couls also try a call and use the screensharing feature in Skype to check the other persons settings, turning off firewalls etc. Make sure to enable calls from anyone beforehand in tools > settings > calls

  • Contact request: Is this a scammer?

    Hi,
I received a contact request yesterday with the (in my language) default invitation message from a Skype account I don't know. Said person has a picture of a heart with 2 puppet-like figures looking at it.
Even though I've never had random contact-invite issues before, I'm smart enough to guess this might be a scammer and I should not accept this person.
However, The only information shown on the profile of said person says that this person is from the same city as me.. Which is what kinda confuses me.
    So my questions are,
do scammers fake being from the same city on their profile?
Could it do any harm for me to accept said person and ask who they are? (I have no added phone number on my Skype profile, so that's secure). Or is there a different way of finding out who they are/where they are from?

possible, scammers might employ such tactics to entice their targets to accept their contact request.  Generally, it is not advisable to suspicious contact requests.  I think if that user is indeed someone who knows you, they may have attached a short message in their contact request to introduce themselve.

  • Contact request showing a pending IM message with ...

Hi - received a contact request today from a person unknown to me.
When I look at the request, there is an IM showing in the history, with the status 'pending', that looks like it has come from me (it has my actual name at the top of the message line, not my user name).
That is odd all by itself, but the content of the IM is one of my passwords, used in other applications/programs.
I have declined the request - and have noticed that the person requesting is offline.
    Has anyone ever experienced this?
I have now changed all apps / progs that use this password but it is a little worrying.  How did they know my password?  It absolutely is not easy to guess and I have never disclosed it.
I am running Skype on a iMac, iPhone 4S and an iPad 2.
Any suggestions on what is going on here?
    thanks....

but this means ill have to re enter all my contacts and passwords. i store all my invoices on my phone via an invoice app. restoring from new would mean i would lose all that info which i cant afford to do. thanks for the help tho. maybe ill just have to ride it out till the cache clears out.

  • Unwanted Contact Requests

Unwanted Contact Request IS THE REASON I AN QUITTTING SKYPE AND
WILL NO LONGER PAY FOR THE SERVICE

    Dear Readers,
I, too, have filed various reports via the [email protected] e-mail address and to date have not received a reply - however, nor did I ever expect to.
Moderator Note: This e-mail address is no longer in service.  Please see this FAQ article for next steps and instruction: https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA10001/how-do-i-report-abuse-by-someone-in-skype
I have it on good authority that all of our reports are reviewed by Skype and action taken as necessary.  I have also reported this and many other threads related to this topic.   You may also file reports with Skype Customer Service directly; here is a link to the instruction on how to do this: contact customer service
For my two cents, I add absolutely nothing to the profile - country, location, birth date and so on are completely blank/unspecified or for those settings where we are permitted choices, private or contacts only.
Please don't shoot me, I'm only the piano player ...
    Best regards,
    Elaine
