Receiving FAX on Answering Machine Line

I have an external Fax Modem on my Mac Pro. It works great in both sending and receiving Faxes. My FAX line is also my business line and when I have my Answering Machine turned on I cannot receive Faxes, as I have set the answering machine to pick up sooner than the Fax Modem. If I change that to the other way around, no one can every leave message. My old HP Fax machine had a setting that could differentiate between and income Fax and Voice call so I would receive all Faxes and all voice calls to the right place. Is there anyway to get the Apple Fax application to do the same?

I bought a ComSwitch 5500 from Buy.com. It was about $50 delivered. Hooked it up per the instruction and it works great. Can even deal with caller idea. Only draw back is a caller hears 1 more ring than you will as it waits to see the FAX tone before patching the call to your telephone. The customer support was great at ComSwitch for technical help.
Thanks for helping out. I have been dealing with this problem for years!

Now hat I have my HP6500A Plus connected the fax works great.  However my answer machine will no take messages.

    Hello A082692a,
First important question is, is it a real answering machine or something like a Voicemail service. With a real answering machine click HERE to see how to set up your fax and answering machine. Be awere of the fact that the message you record on your answering machine needs to be recording to several rules. But all this is explained on the page you can reach by clicking on the link above.
Voicemail service will most likely not work with the fax, but there are som e internet sites with thing you can try. A Google search on use a fax with voicemail will help.

  • I cannot receive faxes on my Voip line

I cannot receive any faxes on my voip line. The line rings, the fax answers the call and starts negotiating, but I get a message that there was no transmission.
The sender is using a regular land line.

Check this link, This is actually used for reciving fax but it can also be used for sending. ALso verifywith the provider if they are using t.38 protocol.

  • Answering Machine/Phone/Fax receiving

    Hi,
I was wondering if anybody knows of any software that makes the difference between different rings. Basically, my phone line is set-up with two phone numbers on the same line, each number has its own diferent ring. I would like the answering machine to pick-up for one ring and my Mac/fax to pick up for the other ring. Is that possible?

    Hello @BoltAction,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand when you're receiving a fax, the answer machine comes on using the Officejet 8620. I will do my best to assist you! Let's check the fax settings on your printer to make sure everything is correct:
Do you have a distinctive ring pattern? If not, then make sure the ring pattern is set to All rings in the basic fax menu
Do you have a Voice mail on this line as well?
Please turn off error correction mode on your printer:
On the printer control panel, swipe the display to scroll to Setup , and then touch the Setup icon ( ).
Touch Fax Setup , and then touch Advanced Fax Setup.
Touch Error Correction mode to off
Next, follow this entire HP document on Cannot Send or Receive Faxes. I would like you perform any steps I haven't covered on this post. Make sure you that the answer machine is connected properly.  Please let me know if any of these steps make a difference. Have a great night!

  • Can send but can't receive faxes on HP Laserjet, on Mac 10.9 Mavericks with TAM answering machine

I have an iMac running OS 10.9 (Mavericks) and an HP Laserjet Professional M1212nf MFP all-in-one print/scan/fax machine connected by USB.  I have a telephone system with answering machine connected.
I can send out faxes from the HP and from the Mac (using Fax pdf).  What I can't do is receive faxes on the HP (I know that the Mac cannot receive faxes with this machine).  I've tried every combination of settings to no avail  even disconnecting the phone/answering machine to no avail.
Any ideas what settings I need?

    Hi ChuckStewart,
This is certainly a head scratcher! I have found some additional information, from the following link Using an HP Fax Product with a Telephone Answering Machine (TAM).
I found this blurb interesting, When recording the outgoing message on your TAM, the voice portion should be at least 10 seconds long, but no longer than 20 seconds . Record 5 to 7 seconds of silence at the end of the voice portion of your outgoing message (total outgoing message length would be your voice message plus the additional 5 to 7 seconds of recorded silence ).
I wonder if you might find something helpful in the document.
    Please let me know. thanks.

  • Send and receive a FAX without a phone line

Is it possible to send and receive faxes without a phone line. Instead, can I use bluetooth and cell phone? Or, are there any other options?
    MacBook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Yes/No. There are internet options, companies/programs that like internet phone dialers allow you to send faxes over the internet that end up calling actual phones. Most (if not all) charge a fee for this.
As for bluetooth/cellphone, you're better off sticking with internet options. You could use bluetooth if you had a bluetooth device setup to receive and convert but I'm not sure such advices exist and even if they did I'm not sure the value of them. It would be like sending from your laptop while standing next to a fax machine. Cell phones are possible if your phone allows connection via modem which only a handful do. Given a cellphone with modem support and an apple modem, its possible.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus - no longer able to receive faxes

I can no longer receive faxes!  I consistently get error message 281.  My bookkeeper and I exchange faxes multiple times a week and it has always worked in the past.  She is able to send and receive faxes from her machine.  I am able to send faxes to her, but I cannot receive any faxes.  All other functions (i.e. printing, copying, scanning, and sending faxes) are still working.

This means there are noise on the line, or you are using a non traditional phone line like from a cable company.
Check with your phone company first.
On the fax, try the following:
turn off ECM (Error Correction Mode)
    set a slower transmission speed

    2) on the SPA 2102 on the line were is  attached the fax machine, audio section:
I have followed the setup as described in the document that I have mentioned in my first message that is:
    a) Preferred Codec: G711u;

    o) FAX Tone Detect Mode: caller or callee
With this configuration I can receive and send fax to 14.400 on PSTN line acros the asterisk and the SPA 3102 / 2102 device.
The phone attached on the line 1 port of the spa 3102 have not echo when answer or call on the PSTN line as the other phone that have access to PSTN Line.

  • Pixma MX 882 in if there is an answer machine on the line I can only receive faxes manually

I have a Pixma MX 882. I was told a while back by Canon Support that if there is an answer machine on the same line as the Canon that I can only receive faxes manually. Has Canon solved the problem.?
HP can do it, Brothers can do it, old Fax only machines can do it

    Hi mort,
This is true...but let me clarify the setup for you.  The answering machine must be connected directly to the printer.   Your phone cord will come from the wall outlet, into your PIXMA MX882 (L port on your printer) and then out (from the phone port) to the answering machine.  With your printer connected between the wall outlet and the answering machine, the printer can "listen in" for a fax on the line when the answering machine picks up.  Be sure the printer is set to Tel Priority mode and the answering machine is set to pick up in about 3 rings.

  • Receiving a fax on a shared voice/fax/answering machine configuration

I have changed my phone service to Uverse and I no longer have a unique incoming fax number.  I share the same number with my incoming/outgoing voice and fax.  The "answering machine" is built into my service with AT&T.  I can send a fax without a problem.  During the fax setup process the report says "After answering a call, if you hear fax tones, you can receive the fax manually by either pressing the "Start" button on the printer control panel or by pressing "1 2 3" in sequence on your extension phone.  You can hang up the extension phone after the printer answers."
I can successfully receive a fax when I press the Start button; however, if I press "1 2 3" on my phone (not wired...just a remote) the machine does not accept the fax.  Am I doing something wrong?

    Hi @TonyW63
Since you are doing what you were told, I don't think you are doing anything wrong, I do however think what you were told may be slightly incorrect   I think I remember these, press the 1, 2, 3, instructions applying to some of the older HP fax machines, but I do't believe it works with the newer machines.
Now, it is possible I am incorrect, but we could try something. Do you have a corded phone? Maybe if you try the 1, 2, 3 sequence on a corded phone instead of a cordless it may work.
Frankly, I thought if you picked up a phone call, not knowing it was a fax until the tones started, if you hung it up quick enough the fax would pick it up without you having to do anything, this I suppose only works if you have auto answer on. Based on your description, I guess you don't use the auto answer because then it would interfere with your voicemail
Let's try the 1, 2, 3 with a corded phone and if that doesn't work I will do some further research to see what I can find.

  • Using broadband/phone line to receive faxes

Hi. At the moment the line that comes in is split, one to my computer and one to a fax machine. Is there a way I can send/receive faxes but still use the stand alone fax to answer phone calls and send some faxes? Thanks for your help. I receive so many spam faxes that it would save a forest! I'm in the UK if that makes a difference

So, can you clarify your phone and internet connections, you mention you have broadband and one split of the phone line, so what all is actually connected to the computer? Are you using a phone-line split to the computer USB/dial-up/fax/modem or a phone-line split to DSL modem to computer Ethernet or both of these? You may need to run an additional split to get both, and don't forget those in-line DSL filters for every phone/fax/modem line.
If you want to fax from the computer you have to use the USB/fax/modem with a phone line in addition to the Ethernet line from your broadband (DSL/cable?). If you are using dial-up for internet (not broadband, very slow band), then you can't simultaneously use the fax/modem to fax while you are connected via dial-up modem.
Since you have a dedicated fax machine, but don't want to waste the paper on the spam faxes, you may have to turn off auto receive on the dedicated fax and have the computer set to receive faxes as electronic files so you can just print ones that you want to save paper, is that your plan?
So, you can use a hardware fax/phone switch to route the fax calls to the computer, or some folks use a dual numbers on a single line phone service with distinctive rings and set up the computer to answer only the fax-ringer calls. Not sure which alternative is cheaper.
For outgoing fax calls, either computer or fax can use the phone line split, just not simultaneously.

  • What is the best way to hook up a telephone line to an i- mac so I can receive faxes directly to my computer?

What is the best way to hook up a telephone line to an i- mac so I can receive faxes directly to my computer?
I tried usb modems.  They worked ok for 32 bit usb's but Lion only allows 64 bit.  I bought one from Best Buy and it works when it wants to.  Mostly, it doesn't want to!
Is there a way to connect through a time capsule?

    Thanks for that!!
    Zoom - 56K V.92 USB Mini External Data/Fax Modem
I didn't look any further than this.  I bought this at Best Buy and like I said, it works somesimes.  It does not trigger the fax automatically when the phone rings.  You need to have it manually answer.  In the past, I had the 32 bit Apple version of this external USB modem and it worked without issue.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus - Fax answering incoming calls instead of answering machine

I have set the fax up on my new HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus & the fax test report at the end passed everything & yes I have used the right cord for the phone (the one which came with the fax) however when someone calls, the fax picks up the call instead of the answering machine.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this please?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

If you only get fax once in a while, I would suggest turn off auto answer on the 8600, and when you hear the fax tone,  *#123 to tell the fax machine to pick up. That way, you can leave your answering machine the way it is, and not miss the faxes either.

  • Laserjet M1536dnf fax error report - result-Line Surge(2)

We use HP LaserJet MFP as stand alone fax machines. Earlier this week, the one that had been in service for 6 years would not receive nor send a fax. All other functions worked well. The replacement the M1536dnf, will send and receive faxes but after a few attempts. The two errors that have been coming up are Line Surge(2) and Comm Error 232. When I dial our fax number with my phone I can hear static on the line at times.
After replacing all the patch cables that are connected to this line (fax and postage machine are on this line), nothing has changed.
I am thinking the telco has made changes which is now giving us these errors.
Any other ideas what to check for or what the Line Surge error may mean?

    Hi @benamen,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see that your Laserjet M1536dnf will not send and receive faxes. I am sorry to hear this, but I am happy to help!
I would recommend to go through these guides, to verify everything is connected properly:
    Cannot Send or Receive Faxes.
    Troubleshooting Fax Issues.
According to this guide, Interpreting Error Codes in Fax Communication Error or Fax History Reports.
    Error Code: 232, 233, 234, 235 ECM, 236 ECM, 237
    Definitions
A communication failure occurred between the two machines.
The user at the remote machine might have pressed the Stop key.
The call waiting service can cause this error. The click, heard for an incoming call, is actually a momentary disconnect of the line. Do not use call waiting on a line with a fax machine.
The power at the remote machine was interrupted, or deliberately turned off causing the fax session to be interrupted.
    Solutions
If the error persists, and error correction is in use for the fax session, disable ECM. Fax quality might be degraded.
Set the host machine to receive at a slower transmission speed.
Retry the fax reception at a different time when telephone line conditions have improved. Call the telephone provider if line conditions fail to improve. These errors can occur if the phone lines in the area to be faxed are old or there is noise (static on the phone line). Other reasons can include power brownouts and other power-related problems.
After reading this information, and verifying the connection is setup properly, I would definitely consider contacting your phone provider.
    Hope this helps!
