Receiving Spam from myself1

I seem to be receiving regular spam mail from my own email address. It appears to be linked to a 'msadcenter' (there is a 'reply to' address linked to this). Can it be a virus? I am receiving them everyday and I also seem to be sending them to other people as I often get an 'undelivered' mail note (whom I don't know and are not in my address book but seem to have the same first name as myself).
Help! Anyone. How do I get rid of this?
Many thanks for any help.

Hi
highly unlikely to be a virus.
Some spammers & other unsavoury types gather real email addresses, not just to send spam to , but also use these addresses or variations on them as the 'apparent' sender of the messages.
Thus your email might be used to 'send' a few or thousands of spam emails to addresses which may not exist ( some spam software tries many combinations of [email protected] for example...) Of course this mail will be bounced back as undeliverable if it's a non-existent address, hence the mails you get.
Doing anything about it is harder - you can't prevent someone from pretending that an email they sent came from you. Decent Spam filtering at your isp or email provider will filter out a lot of these bogus returned emails.

  • My contacts are receiving spam from my email, how can I stop?

What is the best way to scan for virus on my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.8).  Yesterday at 10am I started receiving numerous bounced emails in my inbox from random contacts in my address book-some that are very old and I haven't used for years (hence the bounce-back).  Also had a few friends email me back saying they were getting spam from me.  Shut down my computer and it seemed to stop, however this morning at 10am it started all over again!  Yikes!  I have three mail accounts including yahoo mail which is where some of the contacts came from originally, although I have since added them to my Mac address book. What is my best course of action?  Thanks for your help!!!

Yahoo email is famous for beiing hacked and has nothing to do with your computer. Most of the time.
That is not to say it is your Mac that is doing this.
If you really think it is something on your Mac then turn it off for a day and see if these contacts are still gettig emailsfrom you on that day. If they are and you did not use your computer that day then it is your Yahoo email system that has been hacked.
Also what you could do right now is log on to your Yahoo email and change the password. If the emails stop then again it is your Yahoo email acount that has been hacked and not your Mac.

  • HT4864 I just received spam from myself addressed to myself and other @me users.  Is Apple aware of this and has their server at iCloud been hacked?

This was the e-mail I received:

    <Email Edited by Host>

Firstly, it's a really bad idea to post your email address (or anyone else's) - it's an invitation to even more spam - and I've asked the Hosts to remove them.
When people receive emails which appear to come from their own address but they haven't sent they naturally tend to be concerned: however it's most unlikely that anyone has hacked their account, they've just been targeted by one of two common spammers' techniques: both arise because it's all too easy to forge the 'from' address on messages to be something other than the real one.
There are two things that can happen. One is that the sender has forged the 'from' address to be the same as the 'to' address (so other people will see it coming from themselves, not you), presumably in the hope of confusing spam filters. It's harmless, if extremely annoying. Delete it (never ever answer spam or try to unsubscribe from it), and you don't need to be worried about it.
The other problem is that a spammer is forging your address as the 'from' address on a whole batch of messages. Usually the first thing you hear about this is when you start getting bounce messages because the spam has been sent to non-existent addresses and is being bounced to you. In this case it looks as if this is what has happened but you've also got onto their mailing list so you're getting it directly.
There's no point at all in responding to it. It's infuriating but normally stops after a bit as they move on to another forged address.
There isn't really anything you can do about it: closing the account isn't really worth the hassle unless you are totally swamped, because you will have to tell everyone your new address. Apple can't really do any more than they already are about spam.

  • Whoa ! I've just started receiving spam from OVIST...

I was waiting a message from my daugther, and I got that stupid message from OVISTRORE : "download new games and applications;;; etc." from OVISTORE.
    Which I find really unpleasant.
You pay not a small amount of money to have a "smart phone", and It is used by those who sold it to you for their advertisement !
If Nokia is fair, it has to pay me to accept any advertisment.
Besides, most of the applications I've tried from OVI STORE are bad, with only a few eceptions (of course that of the ovi maps).

Log on to OVI Store.. and click 'Account' (..just below your name...)
..after the E-mail Address field there are 3 choices for receiving the alerts.. UNTICK all...
    Enter the Password and SAVE.
This should stop the SMSs from OVI Store..

  • Someone is spamming from my iPhone. How do I stop this?

Someone must have hacked my iPhone because friends and family say they are receiving spam from me and the messages say they are sent from my iPhone. Any idea how to combat this?

You may have gotten a worm or other form of virus that infected your computer, which could have taken control of any mail account on it. If it did this, it was probably quite sophisticated, and probably kept up what it assumed was your standard signature to keep up appearances, so your phone is probably fine.
You may still want to unlink any mail accounts on your phone just in case, however.

  • Excessive Email Spam from Romania!

I am receiving excessive amounts of spam/phising sites from Romania offering bogus ADT ads, lower interest rates on my home loan, and senior dating services (although I am not even close to being a senior). Now, I have been spending weeks of my life using the filtering and blocking, but more just keep coming. I also have the spam filter turned on, but from the volume of crap I am getting in my mailbox, I don't think it's working. Now, I am told I have reached my maximum on my filters. Really??
Now I am frustrated at the bombarded rate I will be receiving spam from these email tyrants! What are my choices? Quite frankly, I am tired of deleting hundreds of these emails from my phone and my mail box!
    Here some examples:

In spite of the gloomy poetic effects which Mademoiselle de Verneuil's imagination cast about this vaulted chamber, which was echoing to the sounds of a pitiful prayer, she was obliged to admit that the place was nothing more than an underground kitchen, evidently long abandoned. When the formless mass was distinguishable it proved to be a short and very fat man, whose limbs were carefully bound before he had been left lying on the damp stone floor of the kitchen by those who had seized him. When he saw the new-comer approach him with a torch in one hand and a fagot of sticks in the other, the captive gave a dreadful groan, which so wrought upon the sensibilities of Mademoiselle de Verneuil that she forgot her own terror and despair and the cramped position of her limbs, which were growing numb. But she made a great effort and remained still. The Chouan flung the sticks into the fireplace, after trying the strengt

Marie saw with terror that the man was the same Pille-Miche to whom her rival had delivered her, and whose figure, illuminated by the flame, was like that of the little boxwood men so grotesquely carved in Germany. The moans of his prisoner produced a broad grin upon features that were ribbed with wrinkles and tanned by the sun. -->

These are a handful of suggestions for best use, and you should try to adopt as many of them as you can.   In general though you should make good use of the spam button, spam detector tool and Filter rules (filters allow you to create a rule, and have it automatically delete those spam messages.  You have gone through a lot of the below suggestions, I imagine, so you MAY want to set up two ID's for online email.
Always try to use best practices when using email on the internet.
You should start reporting the spam with a spam button in the webmail client
Forward spam emails that were not caught to [email protected]
Set your e-mail filter. An e-mail filter and spam blocking software are absolutely critical. Set these security measures to update automatically to ensure that you are protected from the latest threats.
NEVER reply to spam. Replying to spam, even to "unsubscribe," could set you up for more spam.
Protect your e-mail address and instant message ID. If you must post this information online, set up two identities, one for real use and one for online activities.
Be wary of e-mail attachments. Change the settings on your e-mail program so that images and attachments are not opened automatically. Only open attachments from users known to you.
Watch out for phishing scams. Don't click on links in e-mails or instant messages unless the sender is known to you. Instead, open a separate web browser and visit the site directly.
Create smart and strong passwords. Use a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols.
Never enter your personal information in a pop-up window. You may not be able to tell when a scammer has hijacked a seemingly legitimate site.
Don't fill out online surveys, or register for contests or fan clubs. These may be fronts for spammers trying to collect your e-mail address

  • I received spam using Firefox as my browser from Fed Ex; it carried a virus; instantly an $89.99 protection plan was forced on me; don't like sales like that.

I have Kapersky Antivirus and do not need to spend $89.99 on whatever program Mozilla is promoting. First of all, I don't expect spam from Fed Ex and should not have opened the e-mail (which looked authentic and I do order with Fed Ex delivery); however, your loop kept taking me back to the high pressure sale of your Shield antivirus program. Nice that I found out the e-mail was contaminated, but please no high pressure sales or scares. My own program handled it for me.

Firefox does not have anything to do with your email or spam you may have received. Firefox is simply a browser that you use to access your email (Email is managed by people like AOL, Gmail, etc.). And if you received an email trying to sell you software, that came from a third party that is spamming you.
Shield Anti-virus sounds like it may be part of a family of rogue anti-viruses. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_security_software http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_security_software]. So, it sounds like you may have an infection on your machine if you installed this program. Also, if you provided your credit card to the anti-virus, the integrity of your credit card number is at stake.
[[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]] provides some resources you can use to help eradicate this virus.

    Hi,
Do you mean you are not getting SMS text messages now ?
    If so start here
Follow the Account management options until you are offered and email contact.
Explain the issue via email as only someone in Support can now remove your iPhone Number from iMessages if it has not "de-registered" itself correctly.

  • I am receiving spam emails from my own email address and need to put a stop to it asap please.

Hi as per above, for the last week I have been receiving spam emails from my own email address. Can anyone help me please to put a stop to this and also perhaps explain how it happened? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

'''but not sure what you mean when you say I must not store it on my computer?'''
I was just thinking that if someone or some software agent is accessing your computer then they also have access to saved passwords if for instance it is webmail and the password is stored on Firefox, or if you store logins and passwords in any other utility.
'''I have asked my service provider again for help - waiting to hear from them. I don't store passwords in any other utility that I know of? Are passwords stored automatically somewhere on computers?'''
An obvious thing to do is also make sure you log out of email and do not leave yourself logged in or use the remember me option.
'''Yes, thank you, I always log out and never use the remember me option'''
'''Thank you for your input. I did report this to my service provider and they assured me that no one is accessing my account?
I wonder what they meant by that
possibly that the account has been accessed only from your computer and the same IP Address has been shown
Maybe just that the mail used your login and password.
'''I have asked them to verify the above - thank you. :)'''
What are the emails ? do they make sense, are they also sent to others ? and of course is it likely anyone else is using your computer and sending these emails.
'''The emails make some sort of sense but not much. As far as I know I am the only one receiving them but just to be safe I deleted my Address Book. No one else has access to my computer - I am the only one who uses it. :(('''
it is probably worth contacting them again, give a couple of examples of the emails you are referring to and tell them that you yourself did not type those emails. Ask if they can explain how this may have happened.
'''Done and awaiting their response. :) Thank you'''
As a general security measure it is also good practice
to use a limited user account for day to day work not an admin account
    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/windows_security_whynot_admin.mspx
to set passwords up to login to your computer
'''what is a limited user account? Also, I am now busy adding a password to my computer and making all files private through User Accounts. Would that help do you think?'''
    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/usercpl_create_password.mspx
(IIRC at one time by default XP setup an Administration account with a nul default password, an F8 reboot would get you in by just using the return key when the password prompt showed ) P.S. as mentioned method 3 in this article http://www.slideshare.net/passexpert/six-methods-to-crack-windows-admin-password-remove-unknown-windows-admin-password. Rather a serious security hole.
'''"oooh, sorry, the above paragraph is way past my limited knowledge? Will read the article again and get back to you. Thank you so much for your help so far. :)'''

  • Can not receive emails from third party email accounts

Recently I started working for a small business which has small business server 2011 and exchange 2010 installed. Before I started there were eight user accounts and they all have unlimited email access. I created a few users through sbs AD and also from
exchange console a week ago. Unfortunately none of them can not receive emails from third party accounts. they all can receive internal emails and also can send mails to any email accounts internally and externally.
This is a night mare for me as new users are having trouble with communicating via mails. I have tried all the methods and now thought of posting this issue on tech net. Please help me on this!!
    Thanks a lot!!
    Sammy

Checklist for testing inbound email problems, I am assuming outbound emails works ok.
    1. Check Port 25 forwarding on all modems routers/firewalls
    2. MX Record is created and pointing to the correct Public IP Address, use MXToolbox.com to verify MX Record and test SMTP flow. Also Verify your public IP has not changed, use whatsmyip.org to check you public IP
    3. If using POP Connector Service, make sure POP accounts are created properly
    4. If using a 3rd party spam host, make sure they forward email to correct public IP address, use step 2 to verify your public IP.

    Thanks

    Hi Beigi,
According to your description, I understand that Exchange cannot received the message from Gmail, however others works well.
    Great checklist from Hotaka.
Additional, I want to double confirm whether any other antivirus and protection software in your environment, also the
    Anti-Spam
    or
Transport rule settings, for example sensitive words, IP block list and attachment filter, so that the message from external trigger constraints and be rejected. Meanwhile, please double check in OWA.
Besides, please use message tracking log to get more details for this issue. It’s more helpful to narrow down the problem, for your reference:

  • Not receiving email from one domain

    Hi,
I am running Exchange 2003 on Windows Server 2003 SP2 and suddenly starting having the problem of not receiving mail from one domain.  All other domains seem to be fine, although seem slower to receive mail than normal.  The sender of the domain in question does not receive any NDR or bounce back error messages, so they are none the wiser the mail has come through.  I have checked the junk/spam, I don't have any filters which could be blocking the domain.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks

    Hi,
Please enable the protocol log on SMTP virtual server to check whether the remote domain has attempted to connect to your exchange server to send email to you.
If the remote domain has attempted to connect to your exchange server, please check whether the message is received by the SMTP server. If the message has been received, please use the message tracking log or queue viewer to check whether the message stuck on the server.
If the message is rejected, you can use protocol log to gather further information.
If the remote domain does not attempt to connect to your exchange server, I think you need to work with the remote domain admin regarding the issue as other domains are able to send email to you with no problem.

  • Unable to receive mail from a particular address (love is at stake!)

Okay, so for weeks my new girlfriend and I have been steadily swapping mail without problem. Then, on Sunday 5 Aug at 10pm EDT or so, mail from her personal account ([email protected]) to me ([email protected]) starts bouncing back to her as undeliverable. I don't receive any of them. She is able to mail others, however, without problem and can also mail me at my workplace (not a good solution). The mailer daemon keeps telling her that it continues to try to send it but after xx.xx hours has been unsuccessful. She can receive mine fine.
She has asked comcast support for help. Their best theory after examining the history is that icloud has blacklisted her address, perhaps for spam or a perceived threat as interpreted by the icloud security system. This is admittedly their best guess. She did attempt to send me an email listing several links to bike tours. I never rec'd it and it appears that it was the earliest case of mail rejection.
First, can someone advise me on how to contact icloud about this issue? Secondly, does this stand to reason to those of you who understand these systems?
    Thanks for your guidance.

Okay sorry for delay. Here is a header of a message that had been blocked and it has now apparently been released as i just recieved it a bit ago. I'm imagining that's the result of a 48 hour waiting period. Hope this helps. Thanks again.
