Receiving unsolicited contact requests.

I only use Skype for chats & video calls to my relatives in Australia. Normally I do not receive unsolicited contact requests. I have had them before and they seem to follow either new Skype updates or my Skype activity. I video called OZ last week and I am now receiving 6 or 7 unsolicited contact requests from young women in Africa/Asia each day now?Yes my settings only allow my contacts to contact me and yes I block all the unwanted requests; but it is annoying and upsetting because I do not know how & why it happens and I cannot stop it.Apparently neither can/will Skype? My apologies for being repetitious, I'm just blowing off steam.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE. SAME ISSUE JUST STARTED JULY 2015. IF SKYPE DOES NOT PUT IN A FILTER THEY ARE GOING TO LOOSE A LOT OF CUSTOMERS AND THEIR REPUTATION.
THIS IS LIKE GETTING ANNOYING TELEPHONE CALLS FOR DONATIONS EVERY DAY BY HUNDREDS OF CALLERS. WILL SKYPE GET THE MESSAGE? EVERYONE KEEP BEATING ON SKYPE!!!!

  • Receiving Unsolicited Facetime Requests

I keep receiving unsolicited Facetime requests on my iPhone.  I noticed in the morning that this person attempted to Facetime with me during the odd hours of the night, and in the morning they tried to connect again.  I wasn't sure if I actually knew the person so I answered the call (with the camera blocked) and asked who this was.  All I could hear on the end was laughing and that was it, there was no video of an actual person, but an empty background of someone's room.
I hung up.  Afterwards, I kept getting requests over and over from the same user.  I finally had to disable Facetime from my iPhone to avoid being harassed.  What I don't get is, why isn't there some sort of blacklist or blocking feature in Facetime?  This could be a haven for spammers, if they were able to harvest facetime IDs, they could easily spam thousands of people with this communication tool.
So what are my options (other than having to disable my Facetime)?

  • Unsolicited contact requests (spams / junk)

I though Skype would have been a better platform, but it appears to be the worst of the worst.  I am constantly inundated with (mostly sexual) unsolicited contact requests.  I do not have the time to keep blocking every day.
Does Microsoft have a plan and timeline on fixing this?  Else I will be uninstalling Skype.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

What I want is a solution that handles the problem terminatedly! I do get multiple unwanted requests daily (4 already and its only 9AM). This situation has gotten worse over the last few weeks.
I talked with customer support and have set all the privacy settings according to recommendations and even changed my profile name - I was assured this would stop the requests. Well none of the recommendations work.
So why have this privacy setting "Allow messages from: Contacts" if it does not work? Its a little like those buttons at crosswalks.
It seems like a simple formula - contact request does not equal contact on my list = reject it! I will gladly add a person I want to my contacts. How you ask? They can call me on the phone, send me an email, talk to me in person, contact a friend, post on my Facebook - if they don't have any of these then they are a contact I don't need. Will this cause an inconvenience? Maybe but I am not unreachable.
Skype is a tool. A very handy tool for texting, calling, file transfers, conferencing. I use it every single day.
I sympathize with the person who started this thread. Their solution is unworkable for me since Skype is as integral to my business as an internet connection. So the only option Skype has left me is to close my account and open up another one.
This is a VERY BIG hassle as anyone with hundreds of contacts might imagine.
So I ask....make the privacy setting you promote really work. Exclude all contact requests, delete them, do not let them thru, obliterate them, send them all to SPAM hell if they are not on my contact list! Simple, easy, and straight forward.
    Can you do this?

  • Unsolicited Contact requests

I am getting a lot of these lately and continue to block them and report them but I am not convinced that any action is being taken - whats going on - does anyone know??

if you report those users, especially if you send a detailed report to [email protected], Skype will surely take time to check or investigate the activities of those users and do the appropriate actions against their account/s (which may range from temporary to permanent suspension).

  • Contact requests

Hello, I keep getting contact requests fro us soldiers in Afganistan and don´t know how to stop them!Add me to you contact etc... I tried privacy in my setting, but somehow did´t succeed.
    Solved!

    Hi,
Skype application has built-in privacy settings that you can use to restrict who is allowed to contact you, but you can still receive new contact requests. This allows friends that you do not have in your contact list to ask to share contact details with you.
Unfortunately, there is a small minority of people who abuse the Skype software. We have resources dedicated to a number of ongoing anti-spam initiatives so that we can effectively deal with people who send unsolicited messages.
Please continue to block and report abusive users to us. This helps us to identify and prevent spammers.

  • Can Skype send contact requests without your knowl...

My daughter received a contact request from a man that I know. He is denying any knowledge or that he sent it. Does skype ever send contact requests without your knowledge? For example, could it access your email contacts and then search for linked skype accounts and send them contact requests without you knowing? Need to know if this is possible before reporting this person. Thank you.

    Hello
    1. Absolutely NOT!
    2. No. These are private to the users. You should consider reporting this matter to the Police without delay.
TIME ZONE - US EASTERN. LOCATION - PHILADELPHIA, PA, USA.
I recommend that you always run the latest Skype version: Windows & Mac

  • Suggestion: Contact Requests - Privacy Options

    Suggestion:
Addition to Advanced Privacy: options to control who can send the user a Contact Request.
    Example:
    Allow Contact Requests from...
    anyone
people in my Contact's Contact list
    no one
from a list of email addresses  (Add email address)
from a list of Skype names (Add Skype name)
    Details of Example:
Anyone: anyone may send the user a Contact Request.
People in my Contact's Contact list: comparable to "Friends of Friends" in other websites.
No one: User will not recieve Contact Requests.
From a List: this option allows a user to allow specific users to send them a Contact Request. Anyone who is not on the list cannot send a contact request to the user. To add names to this list, the user would input a Skype name or email address in a textbox. The default list is blank.
(parenthesis) = clickable buttons. When clicked, a window  will open in Skype and prompt the user to enter an email address and/or skype name.
=  circles the user would click to choose the option.
To reduce the amount of options, email and name could be combined into one section.
Some users might want to choose "people in my Contact's Contact list" and the list of users, I suggest the ability to select multiple options, unless the selected option would conflict with another.
The list of email addresses and/or names that the user has added could be accessable through menu options, and/or somewhere within the Privacy Settings.
If something like this was implemented, I believe the numerous complaints about strangers sending unwanted Contact Requests would be greatly reduced, if not eliminated.
I am aware of the current solution with unwanted Contact Requests: to Block and Report, and make our profile as "uninteresting" and plain as possible. I have done as suggested, and I still get unwanted Contact Requests. I do not want to be blocking a dozen requests per day, but that's what the current solution leaves us with. To me, and many other users, "Block and Report" is not a satisfactory solution, but it is our only option at this point if we want to continue using Skype.
I'd also wish to point out that for some users, the inability to prevent Contact Requests is unsafe. Some users are mentally impared, or very young, and don't know a stranger from a friend. I'd hate to think that some of these innocent users could be financially, physically, and/or emotionally hurt by one of these deceptive contacts. Online safety is important.
P.S. Thank you Skype for allowing us to communicate to you in these forums.

  • Contact Request

How do I know if somene has received a contact request?
A friend, who is not computer literate at all,  denies receiving my contact requests.
He says he has sent requests to me but I haven't received them.
Is there a way to check this?

There is no way to verify a contact request, apart from the requestee acceping it. Make sure you both are on the same version of Skype, and be sure you are sending the request to the correct account (typos happen).
    http://www.skype.com/go/getskype
Some users have reported that resending requests do help in some instances. Also beeing online at the same time, with status set to online (green icon with checkmark), might help.
You couls also try a call and use the screensharing feature in Skype to check the other persons settings, turning off firewalls etc. Make sure to enable calls from anyone beforehand in tools > settings > calls

  • Contact request: Is this a scammer?

    Hi,
I received a contact request yesterday with the (in my language) default invitation message from a Skype account I don't know. Said person has a picture of a heart with 2 puppet-like figures looking at it.
Even though I've never had random contact-invite issues before, I'm smart enough to guess this might be a scammer and I should not accept this person.
However, The only information shown on the profile of said person says that this person is from the same city as me.. Which is what kinda confuses me.
    So my questions are,
do scammers fake being from the same city on their profile?
Could it do any harm for me to accept said person and ask who they are? (I have no added phone number on my Skype profile, so that's secure). Or is there a different way of finding out who they are/where they are from?

possible, scammers might employ such tactics to entice their targets to accept their contact request.  Generally, it is not advisable to suspicious contact requests.  I think if that user is indeed someone who knows you, they may have attached a short message in their contact request to introduce themselve.

  • Contact request showing a pending IM message with ...

Hi - received a contact request today from a person unknown to me.
When I look at the request, there is an IM showing in the history, with the status 'pending', that looks like it has come from me (it has my actual name at the top of the message line, not my user name).
That is odd all by itself, but the content of the IM is one of my passwords, used in other applications/programs.
I have declined the request - and have noticed that the person requesting is offline.
    Has anyone ever experienced this?
I have now changed all apps / progs that use this password but it is a little worrying.  How did they know my password?  It absolutely is not easy to guess and I have never disclosed it.
I am running Skype on a iMac, iPhone 4S and an iPad 2.
Any suggestions on what is going on here?
    thanks....

but this means ill have to re enter all my contacts and passwords. i store all my invoices on my phone via an invoice app. restoring from new would mean i would lose all that info which i cant afford to do. thanks for the help tho. maybe ill just have to ride it out till the cache clears out.

  • How to Handle Unwanted Contact Requests

Unfortunately, there is currently no method to sort or filter incoming contact requests.   I think it would be very difficult for Skype to determine if a certain person is a potential scammer or spammer, unless they receive relevant reports from users who receive suspicious contact requests from them.  Below are some suggested steps on how to deal with unwanted, random, unknown, or suspicious contact requests.
    1.       Take note of the username and display name of the user (please see image sample below)
    2.       Open the Contact request then click the Block Button.
    3.       The Block This Person window will also appear, you can click the Report Abuse box if you feel that that contact is indeed a highly potential scammer or spammer.  Click the Block button to confirm your action.
    4.       You can also report them to [email protected]
Then Skype will be notified of the suspicious activities of the reported user/s and will most likely prompt them to check and investigate those users.  Their account might be put under suspension, termination, or prevent them from creating new accounts or using Skype services.
Note:  Setting your account's privacy settings to allow messages and calls from people in your contact list only will only prevent the ability of non-contacts to call you or send you instant messages.  It will not stop unwanted contact requests from random users.

I think the problem results from the level of visibility Skype users present. For these random requests to come in, there must be some way of trawling for Skype IDs, which would allow would-be scammers and spammers to make the requests. My wife gets many of them and I get virtually none, so they obviously target women.
If Skype users could manage their level of visibility to prevent random trawling or browsing, but allow targeted searches, that should reduce the incidence of this problem enormously.
Another way would be to create an option for a "Contact Token" which could be forwarded to people you allow to make contact requests. They would need to supply the correct token (matching your individual "Contact Token") in order for the request to be submitted. ie. in Privacy Settings, add the followng option:
"Only accept and display contact requests from users supplying the following Contact Token: _____"
This may seem overly heavy-handed, but it would suit many people who don't want to be bothered by nuisance contact requests, and if they like spam and scam, they don't have to enable the option!

  • No Timestamp On Contact Request

    Hi.
When I use skype on my computer and I receive a contact request it tells me the time I received that reuqest and it also tells me the time that I accepted that request. But, today I logged onto my mobile app and I received a contact request and accepted without looking too much at it as it was a person I was expecting a request from. Now, when I log on my computer it shows me the time that I accepted the request but it doesn't show the time I received the request and on my mobile app it shows neither. I was just wondering is there a way to find out when I received the request? Also, is it possible that the person sent a request and then blocked me before I could accept it (bearing in mind that I did recieve and accept the request).
Thank you for any help you can give me.

    Hi,
If you open the conversation wit that contact on your desktop Skype client the very first entry in the conversation should be the timestamp of the acceptance of the contact request. That's given you accepted it on the desktop skype client.

  • BLOCK unsolicited contact attempts

PLEASE - when is Microsoft's Skype going to allow users the (optional) privacy of BLOCK UNSOLICITED CONTACT attempts? 'm fed up with being harrassed by "Nubile in Nigera" or "Great t*ts in Ghana" - such can cause considerable embarrassment, suspicion and family ructions, doubt and angst.  I'm well aware there have been several requests for a feature such as this yet there has been NO RESPONSE from either Microsoft or Skype. Thank you.

I have read other complaints of this nature so I wish to add to these. I am fed up to the back teeth with the number of unsolicited contact requests with some of them sounding rather creepy which makes me feel decidedly uncomfortable. They are mostly if not all from American men who claim a lot of the time to be serving in Afghanistan and give long sob stories. Now whilst I am sensitive to and hugely appreciative of what armed forces from countries around the world do to protect us all I still do not welcome this intrusion. Kindly do something about this now. As you at Skype are fully aware there are several alternatives of this type of communication available so if you wish to keep your customer base and so keep your business going and all the implications of that business might I STRONGLY suggest you carry these changes out sooner rather than later.

  • Declining hundreds of contact requests at once

I have received 370 contact requests in a short period of time, all from different people. How can I easily decline all 370 requests?

I have tried this a few times as I wanted to archive some mail to a PDF file.  I select a group on mail message and then select print.  It only shows one of the messages being ready to print.  Because it only showed one file, I presumed that it would only prin the one file.
Based on your response, I went ahead and tried the print to PDF. It created a separate PDF file for each mail item.  I then selected all of the PDF files, opened them with preview and did a second print which comned them all into one file.
Thanks for your comment.  As you say, it does print groups of mail items. It is just not obvious that it is going to do it.
