Recent items dont update

I screwed up a couple months ago when I was cleaning my mac up. I went into disk utilities and erased free space. This usually is fine except
I stopped it right before a lightning storm and it was only half way done. Since I did this my mac is not remembering recent items in most of the applications.
In fact every time I launch iTunes it launches the Terms and Conditions box like it was the first time it was running. All of my data, music, movies etc. is fine.
I got the systems recent items working again but the apps like Sketchbook, Quark, and Dreamweaver don't seem to update. Any thoughts would help.
Thank you.

hi Gordon
thanks for you response. what happened is my client changed the prices of the child items on the Item master data and on the BOM but when he was running the update global update some of the child items he had changed in the BOM did not change
when i was doing it on the test sytem it worked, what else do i need to look at?

• Why doesn't the "recent items" menu update?

The recent items menus on Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio neve update, cna clearing the menu doesn't help...how can I fix this?

don't know, but there are certain basic troubleshooting steps that might help. Delete FCP and DVDSP preferences using preference manager (go to digital rebellion's site for free download)

Do other programs' recent items update? Does the systems recent items in the apple menu update? If not, it's probably an os problem rather than an final cut studio problem. You might try repairing permissions in the diskutility.

I recently wanted to update my phone and so when i put it in recovery mode and tried to set it up it said that i had to enter the apple id that i used to set up the phone the first time but i dont know the information to my old account what can i do?

You will need to remember or find the id that you used, without it you won't be able to re-activate your phone - if you are on the activation screen then does that show the first letter of the id and the email provider's name ?
Do you know if you have any of the account's downloads in computer's iTunes library - if you do then you can get the id form that : Recovering a forgotten iTunes Store account name.
If not then see if you can find it via http://appleid.apple.com : Apple ID: How to find your Apple ID.

• Why is my "recent items" list not updating properly?

When I go under the Apple menu to "Recent Items," I find that sometimes it does not actually show the most recent documents I have been working on. I just closed a Microsoft Word document that I've been editing and saving for the past two hours, and it doesn't appear in the list, yet a bunch of other items are documents I had open earlier today (and have since closed). Excel spreadsheets randomly fail to appear sometimes, then appear other times. What gives?

The solution - turn cookies back on in Safari.
I'm guessing here, but it seems likely that iTunes uses the same rendering engine as Safari, and perhaps it is also dependant on Safari's use or non-use of cookies.
What I know for sure is this - once I turned cookies back on in Safari, my list of Purchased items was populated, instead of being blank. So, hope this helps others.
(I didn't have to reload my library, or any of the other things that others have suggested.)

I was recently prompted to update my Itunes player to the latest version. I'm using Windows Vista. I was left with an error message MSVCR80.dll and consequently no new update. I uninstalled the old version and have tried to reinstall manually several times. No luck. Consequently I have no player.
Any ideas for a fix?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
iTunes
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
Bonjour
Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

• How do I remove "Recent Items" Documents from the apple menu?

I've been searching for an answer to this question for the better part of 3 hours now. W
Several iterations of osx ago, there was the ability to separately limit how many recent items were shown for Applications, Documents and Servers. Over the years, I simply installed a newer version of osx on top, and surprisingly my recent items always eliminated the Documents from the list.
I've since done a clean install of mavericks after installing an SSD, and i've lost this small but important part of my work flow. No matter what I've tried to remove the documents from Recent Items, it always shows up. I can still boot into my old HDD (which is now installed as a supplementary drive and also updated and running mavericks 10.9.2), and see from clicking on the Apple Menu > Recent Items that it only displays Applications and Servers.
Try as hard as I can, I can't simply figure out how to remove the documents from the recent items menu. I've tried editing the com.apple.recentitems.plist file, to show 0 items for documnets, but this never seems to work. (I've since read that this file is simply rewritten on logout.) Strangely, if I go into the old setup System Preferences, Recent Items: it is showing as None. I also suspect that maybe I used Tinker Tools or some other utility to change some command line preference (using the gui) several years back. Not sure how I could investigate what would need to be done to compare files or otherwise figure out how to remove the documents section from the recent items menu.
It's starting to drive me crazy. Anyone?

The Apple menu is at the top left hand corner of your screen, click on it and about this Mac is the first choice.
Click twice on Version to get serial number.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

• "Recent Items" is really confused and inconsistent

Is there any way to get "Recent Items" to be the same in all applications? Basically, I have two sets of "Recent Items". The "Recent Items" in Safari and Mail are almost always wrong and do not get updated. I just now cleared by Recent Items from the Finder and from Safari. Then, I opened a document from the Finder. Next, I opened an attachment inside Mail. Now, I have to different sets of Recent Items menus, depending on what application is running.
Is this a known problem and, if so, is there a known way to fix it? Thanks.

None that I know about. Why would say TextEdit want to know where Safari last visited? It makes sense to me that recent items/folders/etc should only reflect what the current application can deal with. Since Finder deals exclusively with folders, why would you want it know anything about files? What exactly did you do to clear recent anything from Finder and Safari, since there's only a Go->Recent Folders in the Finder and only a History file in Safari?

• Removing items from "open a recent item" list

Hi,
I deleted some files in dreamweaver cs5, but they still appear in "Open a recent item",
how can I remove them from the list?
Thanks for any help
David

Windows or Mac?
On Windows, it's a setting in the Windows registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS5\Recent File List
Select each file, right-click and select Delete.
Alternatively, just open up to 9 legitimate files in DW and let the list update itself.

• Strange files in Recent Items menu

I've been getting strange files in my Recent Items menu that I never opened. And when I try to open them, I can't. Here are some of the file names.
AE39.staple
GHAEA.staple
Does anybody recognize any of these kind of files?

As far as I understand it, the app is just an installer and it should only run once, to install the firmware on your DVD drive, but a lot of users have had problems with it running every time they log in (normally it should bring up a window). I tried running it manually and it does leave those same files in my Recent Items menu, as you described.
First take a look in your login items (System Preferences->Accounts) and look for a reference to SuperDrive Update 2.1. If one exists then deleting it should solve the problem. If you want, you can then move the app to the trash (although leaving it be does no harm). If it's not in the list, post back.

• A file shows up in my Recent Items, but I cannot locate it elsewhere

A file shows up in my Recent Items, but I cannot locate it elsewhere. When I click on it, nothing happens in Pages. Nothing, literally. It was located in Documents, but is now longer showing up there. Please help.

Follow Alex's advice.
The Recent Items list is like the human memory and car keys. You know that you saw your car keys the last time you used them, but you cannot remember where you misplaced them — now that you need them.
Recent Items only knows where the document was at last use. If the document is renamed, moved, or deleted, that file activity is not updated in the Recent Items list.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved.
Step 1
Restart the router. Many problems are solved that way.
Step 2
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
Step 3
Run the Network Diagnostics assistant.
Step 4
Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
Step 5
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
Potential sources of interference
Step 6
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
Step 7
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

• Appleworks now crashes on opening "recent items"

Tonight I updated some documents in Appleworks on my iMac and then transferred the completed
files from the iMac to my MacBook Pro. All went well till I tried to open them in my MBP only to find
it crashes every time. The report says it was a
"Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: KERNINVALIDADDRESS at 0x0000000015ef9000
Crashed Thread: 0"
All the reports are the same.
Following the suggestions previously listed I have tried to delete the preferences
(h/d/users/username/library/preferences/Appleworks) but cannot find the file
com.apple.appleworks.plist in (~/library/preferences)
I have triedto restore using time machine but problem still exists.
I have also deleted all the files relating to Appleworks that I can find and then re-installed them
from my iMac where the application works well.
Interestingly, I can find the com.apple.appleworks.plist on my iMac but not on the Macbook Pro !!!
I have also attempted to re-install using both computers with file sharing but still the same old
problem.
If, I go into appleworks and select a document in starting points, then this document will open.
However, when I select Appleworks 6. app and get the starting- points popup, as soon as I select
"recent items" it then crashes.
Can any one please help in this case ?
Alan

There is one point I would like more info on - why don't I have in my h/d/users/username/library/preferences the file "com.apple.appleworks.plist" Its there in my iMac but is not to be found on my MBP.
If you've never launched AppleWorks on the MBP the .plist wouldn't be there. Neither would the AppleWorks folder in preferences. It's possible that if you've launched it but didn't alter any preferences or open any files, it could also be "missing."

• Snow Leopard breaks iWork "recent item" lists?

I no longer have recent items listed for my iWork suite after installing Snow Leopard--it always shows as an empty list now, no matter how many doc, presentations, etc. I've opened. Is this a known bug?

I installed Snow Leopard today, and noticed that the following applications no longer remember recent documents when you go to 'Open Recent':
- Keynote
- Numbers
- Pages
- Preview
- Text Edit
I tried dragging the file 'com.apple.recentitems.plist' to the Trash, emptying the Trash, and rebooting. That fixed the problem for all the applications. So the question now is, why did Snow Leopard cause this problem in the first place? I feel an update comng on!
