Recent Items Menu

is there a way to pin files to the recent items menu so that they don't get removed when clearing the list?

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
The only thing I know of which is similar to that is a list of recent Palm applications which you have opened.  You can bring it up by pressing and holding the "Home" button (the top right button on the front of the Centro).

  • Strange files in Recent Items menu

I've been getting strange files in my Recent Items menu that I never opened. And when I try to open them, I can't. Here are some of the file names.
    AE39.staple
    GHAEA.staple
Does anybody recognize any of these kind of files?

As far as I understand it, the app is just an installer and it should only run once, to install the firmware on your DVD drive, but a lot of users have had problems with it running every time they log in (normally it should bring up a window). I tried running it manually and it does leave those same files in my Recent Items menu, as you described.
First take a look in your login items (System Preferences->Accounts) and look for a reference to SuperDrive Update 2.1. If one exists then deleting it should solve the problem. If you want, you can then move the app to the trash (although leaving it be does no harm). If it's not in the list, post back.

  • Duplicate Items in Recent Items menu

    HI,
Just recently (in the last couple of weeks) I have suddenly been getting duplicate entries in the recent items folder (not in the apple menu as has been discussed elsewhere). I have 2 entries for Disk Utility, ITunes, Terminal etc. I have checked the plist with Onyx and it says the syntax is OK. I have cleared all items in the list. It behaved fine for a few days then the duplicates reappeared again. Should I try deleting the plist file? I currently have the recent items settings for 30 Apps, 5 docs and no servers.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
    Peter

Last thing to try, then, is rebuilding the LaunchServices database by running this one-line command in the Terminal app (copy & paste), and restart:
*/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user*

  • Why doesn't the "recent items" menu update?

The recent items menus on Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio neve update, cna clearing the menu doesn't help...how can I fix this?

don't know, but there are certain basic troubleshooting steps that might help.  Delete FCP and DVDSP preferences using preference manager (go to digital rebellion's site for free download)
    www.digitalrebellion.com
Do other programs' recent items update?  Does the systems recent items in the apple menu update?  If not, it's probably an os problem rather than an final cut studio problem.  You might try repairing permissions in the diskutility.

  • Duplicates in Recent Items menu  ?

I have two or three duplicate items listed when I check my RECENT ITEMS under the Apple Menu. I have cleared the menu, but the duplicates return over time as I use applications. Any idea how to correct this problem? Thanks in advance for any assistance.
NOTE: Voice Over is not turned on.

Cache Out X will rebuild launch services. It's free.

  • Recent Items menu will not remember my recent items

On MacOS X 10.5 going into the preferences and changing recent items did not work. I set it to none closed it then reopened it and set it back to 10. I even deleted the com.apple.recentitems.plist in the preference folder and restarted and it still did not change the recent items listed. Please help this is annoying.

I am sorry that last message was vague. The problem that was happening until the other day was that pages, numbers, preview were not listing any of my recent items even though I had ten listed in the preferences. I tried everything to fix it to no avail then last week they started working again and I have no idea why.
    Thanks for you time.

  • Recent Items menu is empty

After upgrading to Snow Leopard all iWork 09 applications have disabled the "open recent" menu. Any way to fix that? Thanks, M

The fact that the list appear to be blank at first run is normal.
If it remains empty, something is odd in your computer.

  • How do I remove "Recent Items" Documents from the apple menu?

I've been searching for an answer to this question for the better part of 3 hours now.  W
Several iterations of osx ago, there was the ability to separately limit how many recent items were shown for Applications, Documents and Servers.  Over the years, I simply installed a newer version of osx on top, and surprisingly my recent items always eliminated the Documents from the list.
I've since done a clean install of mavericks after installing an SSD, and i've lost this small but important part of my work flow.  No matter what I've tried to remove the documents from Recent Items, it always shows up.  I can still boot into my old HDD (which is now installed as a supplementary drive and also updated and running mavericks 10.9.2), and see from clicking on the Apple Menu > Recent Items that it only displays Applications and Servers.
Try as hard as I can, I can't simply figure out how to remove the documents from the recent items menu.  I've tried editing the com.apple.recentitems.plist file, to show 0 items for documnets, but this never seems to work.  (I've since read that this file is simply rewritten on logout.) Strangely, if I go into the old setup System Preferences, Recent Items:  it is showing as None.  I also suspect that maybe I used Tinker Tools or some other utility to change some command line preference (using the gui) several years back.  Not sure how I could investigate what would need to be done to compare files or otherwise figure out how to remove the documents section from the recent items menu.
It's starting to drive me crazy.  Anyone?

The Apple menu is at the top left hand corner of your screen, click on it and about this Mac is the first choice.
Click twice on Version to get serial number.

  • Modify Recent Items list

I open a lot of torrent files that I really don't ever need to open again.
I was wondering if there was a way to prevent these items from cluttering up the Recent Items menu.
I've looked at the com.apple.recentitems.plst but it just seems to be a list.
Is there a way to exclude certain document types from showing up in the Recent Items menu - sort of like you might with spotlight or a smart folder?
    thanks.

AFAIK, it's the norm. Recent documents only displays ones previously opened, not their current status or whether they still exist.

  • Documents (picture files) in Recent Items issues

My machine is a 2009 MacBook Air with Lion (10.7.3) and I just noticed recently that I can still open the JPG files in Recent Items even though I have already deleted those JPG files.  (When I click on the file name from Recent Items menu, Preview still opens the JPG file)
Does this have to do with Lion's Auto Save & Versions?  I have tried to search for the file, but I can't find where the file location is.  Is there a way to delete pictures completely?
I have searched for solutions, but I couldn't find answers directly to my issue.  Can anyone help me out?  Thanks in advance!

Thank you so much for the help!
Going by your solution, I was able to find the file location.
I found out it's not because of the Auto Save & Versions, it is actually because of Messages (iMessage).  I received these pictures on my Messages and I guess the app automatically saves the pictures in the Messages folder when you receive picture files.

  • I cannot open a recent item. Is it lost forever?

I had an important document that my MacBook autosaved for me, so I opened the autosaved version and began editing it extensively, after finalizing it I (stupidly) saved it under the same autosave name. Now my document folder is only displaying the original version of the document and the autosaved version is not in the folder and does not come up as option when I search for it in the finder. I figured all hope was lost until I clicked on my apple "recent items" menu and there it is!...but i can click on it all day and it doesn't open. Is there anything I can do? (It is a TextEdit doc file) -Cal

Perhaps you can find a more up-to-date version in Time Machine?

  • "Recent Items" doesn't show all recent items

I have a file type I use commonly that never shows up on the Recent Items list. Why?
Actually, none of my InDesign files show up. Is this just Mac acting like Microsoft and only showing recently used MICROSOFT files instead of all files?
I thought that Mac people were better than that! After using Mac's since 1985, I am SERIOUSLY frustrated with the lack of Mac I'm getting with Leopard. It's been terribly MICROSOFTED.
    This *****!
Not to mention wasting hours of my time finding absolutely NO DATA about this in the help, or the knowledge base (talk about copying windows).

I just tried it and my InDesign files show up in the Apple menu's Recent folder after I open them using the Finder - they do not appear after being saved or opened using Adobe's interface to do. Adobe must be bypassing the standard Open and Save file dialogs used by the operating system and in doing so these file operations are not cataloged by the Finder for the recent items menu.
Do you have the sidebar turned on in your Finder folders? There is a section for custom search results or smart folders or whatever they are being called today - where you can store a search for all InDesign Files created in the past week or month or whatever criteria - could even use a tag in the file name by project to have separate folders for each - and you could even go into your Library folder (under your user name) and take that saved search and make it a shortcut on your doc or using an App such as FruitMenu from Unsanity.com you could even make this a custom item on the Apple menu.
Two pieces of advice for you.
    1. Don't get upset with Apple when the issue is with Adobe's code.
    2. Take any opportunity where the system or an app does not work as you would like it to find a creative solution that works better for you than the built in options.
Also I feel your pain I have been there - and in the process discovered some truly amazing third party apps that suit my needs wonderfully - some of which have even been purchased by Apple and incorporated into the base operating system.

  • How can I remove items from the open a recent file menue.

How can I remove items from the "Open a Recent File" menue. Many other applications allow the clearing of that file . Is this possible in Adobe Reader 10.1.2 ? If so how?

    See this previous topic: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3759596
It is for Acrobat, but the registry entries are similar for Reader.

  • "open recent file" menu item - 2 issues / aspects (Mac & Windows)

regarding the  "open recent file" menu item in the File menu.
    1)   should have a way to "clear recent items".  Most software solves this by appending an item "Clear Recent Items" to the bottom of the list of aliases that springs forth from the menu.
    2) Further, in the preferences it should be able to be set to 0 to prevent the function entirely, not just natural #s 1-99.  This is the case in Windows Adobe REader, and on the Mac it was the case the last time I was able to check, but due to the bugs in 9.1.x regarding the ability to handle a case-sensitive file system I haven't been able to even open the preferences on the mac for a while.

    Michael:
    Thanks for your quick reply.
Please note that this issue:  "open recent file" menu item that is not clearable, nor is the system preference able to be set to retain 0 files,
has absolutely nothing to do with the file system issue.  It is just a design choice (or oversight or bug depending on your point of view).
It is an issue of security/privacy to not have the Reader keep a list of recently viewed files, or to at least allow the user to clear the list.
Thanks again for your time, interest, and speedy reply.
    Cheers!
