Recent Leopard Updates

I've just installed the following updates:
AirPort Utility Software Update 2009-C5.4.1
iLife Support 9.0.1
iTunes 8.1
AirPort Client Update 2009-001 1.0
Front Row Update 2.1.7
When I repair permissions I'm flooded with errors. If I repair permissions a second time the errors are still shown so I assume they aren't being repaired. Help! Any suggestions on what to do next?
I'm running Leopard 10.5.6 on a 20" iMac.
Thanks

Thanks much for the reply. Here is what I see.

  • Recent Leopard Update Messes up Cinema Display Firewire Ports

Okay, this is really odd. I have a Lacie Porsche DVD-RWDL Firewire drive hooked up to my Mac Pro via my 23" Cinema display. The cinema display firewire cable was connected directly to the back of the mac pro. Lastly my iSight was connected to the open firewire port on the Lacie. This worked just fine for the longest time under both Tiger and up until very recently in leopard.
Now tho the DVD Drive is not recognized by any programs (Toast, etc) or by System Profiler (Unknown Device) when it is connected to the cinema display. Oddly enough it is detected when connected directly to the mac pro (or for troubleshooting sake I tried my G4 cube w/ Tiger... it also detected it). On top of that the iSight will work when plugged into either the Lacie or the Cinema Display... so its not like the cinema display's pots are dead (the USB works fine).
This is pretty obscure I know... but has anyone ran into something similar? I figure its either some very, very weird hardware problem or or one of the many recent updates to leopard has things acting goofy.
    Thanks

I have a similar problem with my 20" cinema display. Try unplugging and replugging the device. That's been working for me, although it is an annoyance.

  • Login Keychain not working after recent Leopard update

Hi, I've been out of town for the last few weeks and upon returning, I pulled down the most recent updates. Since then, I'm being prompted to enter my keychain password every time I need to access an application. The issue is that when I type my password in, the system is telling me that the password is inaccurate and I am 100% certain that I am typing the correct password in. I ran the Keychain Access "Verify" and then "Repair" and I get the following result. What should I do next?
    Repair started
Checking keychain configuration for Administrator (user ID=501)
    Home directory is /Users/admin
    Checked login keychain
    Checked password for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
Password for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain is not the same as login password, so keychain can't be unlocked automatically
Login password could not be synchronized with keychain ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain (-128)
Unable to read settings for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
    Checked default keychain
    Checked keychain search list
    Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
    Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/admin.keychain
Warning: some problems were not fixed
    Repair failed
    Thanks in advance!

After using Leopard for awhile, I think the "Login" keychain, is the same as your login password, and Leopard asks you over and over again for your "Login" keychain password and I kept putting in my keychain password which was wrong, I finally put in my standard login and it accepted that password. I have no idea why, but I am glad someone else had the same problem....I thought Leopard only hated me!

  • Late 2007 Macbook hangs or stutters following recent Leopard update

After running the software update process on my late 2007 Macbook, the computer seems to stutter. It will do something like respond to a mouse click for a very brief period of time, then hang for 20 to 30 seconds. Just trying to open Safari takes a half-hour or more. Everything was working fine before the updates, and running the Grey OS-X disk that came with it in test mode says no problems were found with the hardware. Booting from that same disk works great also (no delays/stuttering).
It sure looks like something went wrong in the update process. I checked for similar problems and found a mention of ApplicationEnhancer.bundle being a source of issues, but that doesn't exist on my disk at all, so that isn't the issue.
    Any ideas?
Since I can't use my Macbook's internal disk to boot from because of the sluggishness, can I boot from my external USB drive (10.5) and use the combo updater to put 10.5.8 onto the internal disk?
    Thanks in advance!

I've got the same problem - did you get any help on this?

  • Recent firmware update prevents Snow Leopard downgrade?

I need Snow Leopard for my work, and will continue to need it for at least a year. Apple online chat was unable to confirm whether refurbs currently in the pipe would ship with SL or Lion, regardless of age. They basically indicated that my chances were about 50/50.
After reading user accounts of how to downgrade from Lion to Snow Leopard, I went ahead and purchased a refurb February 2011 15" 2.2GHz MacBook Pro from the Apple store. Sure enough, when the machine arrived, it was loaded with Lion.
I ran Software Update to make the OS current, backed it up via Time Machine, and then proceeded with the re-format/SL installation process. However, Snow Leopard would not install using any of the commonly described methods, and the symptoms were consistent with trying to load it onto a post-July 2011 machine.
After a couple of tries, I got a 'phone support agent on the line, who advised that when I ran Software Update, it loaded a recent firmware update that locks the machine down. He was evasive at first, but eventually confirmed that the machine was downgradeable when I received it, but was now effectively a Post-Lion machine, and could no longer be returned to it's as-shipped condition. He indicated that my only option was to return the machine for a refund.
I have a local independent repair facility looking into the situation at the moment, but they are pessimistic.
I was unable to find out when Apple first issued the new firmware load via Software Update, but I understand that people were still successfully downgrading to Snow Leopard as recently as December, 2011.
Assuming that the information I received from Apple is correct, they have closed the door on further Snow Leopard downgrades, at least on the MacBook Pro. Can anyone confirm if this is the case?

Apple is getting a lot of calls from people wanting to downgrade to Snow Leopard for several reasons, like that Lion is terrible and/or they need to run software that hasn't been updated or is avaialble on Lion.
Firmware updates apply to the machine itself, so it if's running Snow Leopard it gets the same firmware updates as a Lion machine.
I'm not ruling out the possibility that a change is preventing you from installing Snow Leopard on a compatible machine, however like to explore the possibility that you've used the wrong disk to do so.
You can't use the 10.6.3 white disk to install Snow Leopard. Early 2011 machines that came with Snow Leopard came with their own disks and hardware drivers that are not present on the 10.6.3 white disks.
Since your Mac is Snow Leopard capable, try calling Apple again and just say you need replacement Snow Leopard disks for your Early 2011 Mac.
If that isn't a option, you migh want to explore the "Procedure" of combining 10.6.3 with the 10.6.8 Combo Update, which when burned to disk, produces a bootable disk to install 10.6
Explore the links and info on this old thread written for the Early 2011-Mid 2011 period
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3264421?start=0&tstart=0
Another option is to get into contact with another Mac user who bought a Early 2011 Snow Leopard Mac of your exact make and model, get a copy of their disk.

  • Recent Time Machine and Airport Leopard update causes Kernel panic

I had 15 iMac's in a classroom that were all updated to the new Leopard update for Time Machine and Airport. When they restarted, they all gave a kernel panic error. Successive restarts continue with the screen starting with the kernel panic error message and asking for a shutdown.
I am extremely sure that it had to be those updates because they were all fine before that. I doubt 30 pieces of RAM could have gone kaput all at once. Since we have a dual boot setup, if I press the alt key when I restart, I can boot into the Windows side without any problems.
If somebody has had a similar problem and found a way to do something about the kernel error, please let me know. Thanks in advance. I did the usual zapping RAM and stuff. It didn't help.

  • Photo window won't open since Leopard update

After I installed the Leopard update June 2 from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3, the next time I clicked on IPhoto, its name showed in the Finder window but the window with my nearly 18,000 photos did not show up. I tried the "Go - Volumes/" suggestion in a previous reply but it didn't work.
I tried importing new photos by inserting the media card which usually opened Iphoto where I could click "import" but although the icon for the card reader shows up on the desktop, Iphoto's window does not.
When I click on the card reader icon where only the most recent UNimported photos exist, a list of Canon folders show. I don't have anything Canon.
Those most recent images show in Cover Flow: the path is Device, DCIM folder, 197Canon folder, image.
Has anyone else had trouble with the Leopard update and Iphoto?
    What should I try?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

In Word 2004 I can not save documents or quit. One suggestion is the recent security update. Any suggestins on how to fix?

Security Update 2012-001 Bricks Rosetta programs
I've outlined the restore proceedure here, it covers a lot of bases and explains what is going to occur so please don't be intimidated it's a LOT easier that it appears.
Take your time and comprehend the steps involved and you'll be backup up like before in short order.
    Restore method.
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
If you get a gray screen or some other hangup upon booting, try holding the Shift key down while booting to enter Safe Mode.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
#2 Try Restoring from a TimeMachine or hold option bootable clone
If you have TimeMachine drive, or a hold the option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from before the Security Update occured.
Obviously if you didn't make a recent backup before the update, your going to have to skip to Step #3.
Note: A TM restore can take a awfully long time, a clone restore takes under 2 hours in most cases.
If you don't know how to restore from TM drive
    http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html
    #3 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
If no recent TM or bootable clone then:
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk and Permissions of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
Note: If Disk Uitlity can't repair the drive, then come back to seek further assistance and make sure you have a copy of your data off the machine.
#4 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#5 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
Note: For most users likley Step #3 and #4 is likley all that is needed to be done.
    That's it really.

    Unverified hacks
Note: You may see a "hack" for this issue floating around, it has had mixed results as people's software is different.
You may want to try it, but it's at your own risk. It has worked fast for some and not at all for others, hopefully over time it will work for all.
The above methods I outline are Apple approved restore methods + based upon experience here and not a quick fix, but are sure to work as Apple recommends such steps themselves.
If at any time you feel this is beyond your capability, please seek local Mac/PC professional assistance before you lose your data.
In fact my steps above are very simple, you might want to have a family member or friend perfrom the proceedure in about a hour or two.
If you don't have any backup, please maintain at least a TM drive, just hook up a new blank external drive and TM will ask you to make a backup, takes some time so let it work.
If your a bit more skilled, a option bootable clone is much superior than TM drive.
    Good Luck

Depending upon how extensive your library of legacy Microsoft Office data files are, you may want to consider continuing to use Microsoft Office 2004.
Microsoft Office's 2011 version is compatible with Lion and presumably either works with Mountain Lion or an update will make it so.  The problem with this approach is that Office 2011 will "convert" your earlier data files and there lies the rub!  For example, I have the need to weekly open a chart created in Excel 2004, but Excel 2011 trashes the chart in its "conversion."
So I have approached the overall problem differently.
The reason your applications do not work in Mountain Lion is that they were written for the older PowerPC CPU that all Macs used up to 2006.  When Apple made its transition to the Intel CPU, they licensed software that they included in all versions of OS X (from Tiger to Leopard and optionally, Snow Leopard) called Rosetta.
Rosetta miraculously allows PowerPC applications to work on the Intel processor transparently; you do not know it is even present.
The problem is that after 6 years of the transition, Apple's license to use the underlying software expired for OS X Lion and all version thereafter (and it is doubtful that the current owner of the software, IBM, would relicense it, even if Apple were inclined to do so).
So for those of use that need to run Lion, I have offered the option to install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels 7:

    And now Mountain Lion:
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions into Parallels 7 are here:

Snow Leopard is $29 and Parallels 7 is $79 retail (cheaper from competitive sources) and Parallels offers a 14 day free trial of Parallels 7 on their website:

  • Bug between bootcamp and recent W7 update ?

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro with several hard drives, one being partionned:
    - Snow Leopard 10.6.8 kernel 64 bits
    - Window 7 64 bits, bootcamp 3.3
This configuration has been running perfectly since more than 24 monthes, even with all the W7 updates.
Today I installed some recent W7 updates, several dealing with .NET or IE, and two with so-called 'driver architecture V1.1'.
After this update, being loggeg on W7 partition, when I try to copy a file from the OS X partition to some folder on the W7 partition, I have regurlarly a crash of W7 with a blue screen. I never had that before.
I tried to uninstall the two W7 updates dealing with this pilot architecture V1.1, one is named 'kernel-driven ....', and one is named 'user-driven ...'. After removing these txo updates, everything is OK again. I was able to copy many files from OS X to W7 without crash or blue screen.
Hence I suppose there is some bug between the Apple bootcamp drivers, especially the one which allows to mount and read HFS+ partitions, and this W7 update.

I have investigated this bug furthermore, and read many forums. At the end, I am suspecting some bad interaction between these two W7 updates, and Kaspersky Internet Security 2013.
    I have :
    - set my network connexion to "automatic", in order it could be active duiring the "reboot / finishing installation" phase after W7 update
    - disactivated KIS 2013, and set the preferences in order it does not launch automatically during W7 boot.
Then I installed the first suspected KB "infrastructure user-driven ...". After W7 reboot, no bug (bleu screen) during copying a file from the OS X partition towards the W7 partition. Then I reactived KIS, and reboot, some tests, no bug either.
I did then the same procedure with the other suspected KB "insfrastructure kernel-driven ...". Same thing. No bug after reboot. Then I reactived KIS and reboot, no bug either.
Hence it seems that Bootcamp in not the culprit, at least not by itself alone. Maybe only in combination with these two W7 updates, and with KIS 2013.
Nevertheless, it's much more probable that there is some bad interaction between KIS 2013 and these two W7 updates. Performing these updates with both KIS 2013 disactivated (and not launched at boot), and the internet connexion set on "automatic", seems to prevent the problem.
I need to perform some more intensive tests, but the bug seems to have disappeared, or at less is became fal less frequent.

  • My Macbook does not recognize that it does not have the most recent software update.

Does anyone have an idea of how to fix this?

Are you on 10.4.11 as shown in your signature?
What recent software update are you referring to? If it's Snow Leopard (10.6), that is not an update - you have to buy it (widely available for $29 or less).
