Recent Macbook & wireless issues

Seems to be a lot of post in reference to connectivity to wireless, and macbooks.
I too have started having issues here lately with my macbook, and I thought I'd share what I found so far between the post and my own macbook.
* Intel core duo, 2 Ghz
* Wireless (radio) device does not seem to matter (same issues with 3rd party radio or airport. (APE[n])
* Within a limited distance, (20ft) the macbook will seem to work fine, except for the occasional drop out to scan for wireless..., which should not be happing.
* Anything outside of 20ft is a crap shoot. Even My neighbors unprotected wireless, which is a linksys, will do the same thing when it connects with the mac book.
None of my other wireless computers (iMacs) have the connectivity issue.
* I'm still using 10.5.6, due too I hear there are some issue with the recent update of 10.5.7
* using version 7.4.1 of APE
* Using WEP instead of WPA, because WPA it does not work with GameBoy wireless
* radio mode is b/g compatible
* (strange issue) under wireless options in APE, it keeps switching country code from US to Puerto Rico after multiple resets of the country.
* This has only started happening in the last 2 months, which somehow I suspect is upgrade related.
If you have similar readings in your macbook, post them here so we can track and narrow down the issues affecting these macbooks.
Grasping at straws..... Antenna issues? APE card issue?
* oh yeah, I can't upgrade my card with the APE enabler, which according to this.....
http://store.apple.com/us/product/D4141ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg&mco=MjE0NDc1NQ
I should be able too. Related somehow?

I have a MacBook and I'm having some troubles trying to connect to any network. The problem is exatly the same one posted above.
Yesterday I went to a friends house. He also got a MacBook. I put both notebooks side by side. He connected to 2 different networks and I couldn't connect to any one. I opened iStumbler in both computers too, and I found the problem: in my friend's macbook, the wireless signal is continuous, while in mine, the signal is intermittent. The orange bar appears, then suddenly disappears, appears again, disappears...
I'm thinking this is a hardware problem, but, before buying a new AirPort card, I'd rather be sure that's not a sorftware/driver issue.
I'm using 10.4.10, and saw some issues about wireless and this version, but the problem also appear when I boot in Windows XP. When I try to connect, the message "Waiting for network" shows up and nothing happen.
Last sunday I was able to connect to another friend connection. I tried to connect several times and it didn't work. Then I reboot the router and connected, but the connection was very slow for a 1mbps speed.

  • MacBook wireless issue (ongoing) & DIY airport card replacement

    Hello,
With reference to the ongoing MacBook/OSX (10.5.3) Leopard intermittent wireless issues discussed in this forum has anybody gone ahead and taken matters into their own hands and purchased and installed a new Airport card for their MacBook from www.ifixit.com?
    Further details at: http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Core-2-Duo-Santa-Rosa-Penryn-802-11n -Airport-Extreme-Card/IF186-062
If so, did it resolve your intermittent Airport issues?
It seems to me that when the MacBook is running on battery power only the Airport card does not realise that the MacBook has come out of sleep sometimes and therefore does not always function correctly. Maybe the Airport card does not receive sufficient power when the MacBook comes out of sleep mode whilst running on batteries only?
Typically when I run the MacBook connected to power the intermittent wireless problem does not occur.
This issue has been a recurring problem for me for 6 months now and unfortunately I have not seen Apple address this issue.
My MacBook is 6-months old and is a black MacBook using a 2.2GHz processor running Leopard OSX 10.5.3.
    Cheers,

Visit Apple Store and replaced the Airport card.

  • Apple confirms it's looking into C2D MacBook wireless issues

Apple says it is indeed looking to problems with the latest MacBooks and their Wi-Fi issues.
    http://blogs.chron.com/techblog/archives/2007/01/updatedthe_macbooks_weakwifi.html

Well - I thought I had problems - I got this machine a few days before I had to go away for 10 days early December.
I still had the old CD MacBook - so just used the Migration Assistant to get everything over. The new Machine was 10.4.8 and my old one was 10.4.7
On the old machine the only time I had WiFi problems was when our Router [ linksys WRT54G ] was playing up and we kept dropping connection - and at the same time we also had our Cable Modem going belly up too . Once they were sorted out - no WiFi hiccups at all.
Got the new C2D up and running - BUT it took me 7 attempts to get it online [ no no wireless security - long story and not relevant] Went to France - staying 1 night on the way with a mate with a Belkin Router. He operates wirelessly . Set up the C2D and saw no less than 11 Networks !! BUT could I get onto his ?? NOPE - no way no how - totally impossible . Even took off his security for me - still no hook up - gave up and used Ethernet.
Tried in France on a Network I knew there - saw plenty [ far more than I could see with the CD Machine] but no luck.
Returned home trying the Belkin again halfway home - no luck.
Got home - straight on - no hassle BUT Icon showed maximum of 3 bars and speeds were slow - but everything worked.
Suddenly - the machine is now just over 1 month old and 2 days ago my Airport Icon showed the full 4 bars and has remained at that - AND I'm now seeing speeds of 3.7 Meg [ on a 4 Meg cable line ]
I've done nothing at all - but I'm still asking questions.

  • New MacBook Pro 13 i5 Wireless Issues.

I got the new MacBook Pro i5 2.3 the day it came out. So maybe a week and half ago.
I`m having intermittent wireless issues. I have done some testing and even replaced my older AirPort Base Station with the new Dual-Band one, but still seeing a drops from the network. I have a ping going to my router and to the ABSE. I tried changing the channel and using 5GHZ or 2.4GHZ. I also have a AirPort express and seen similar results. I tried reseting the PRAM, repairing permission, I did not reinstall the OS but I dont see how this would help. I think there is a hardware issue with the wireless card/antenna.
I did upgrade RAM and HDD was changed to SSD (intel G2 SSD). There are no other issues, machine is fast, no lock ups. Other devices on the network do not seem to drop any connections (ATV, ATV2, iPhone4, iPad etc..)
The network drop outs are short but are noticeable and if a ping is going I can see the drops

  • Macbook Pro (Late 2008) - Windows 7 64-bit, Bootcamp 3.1 - Wireless Issue

    Hi Everyone,
I have a Macbook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) model with Snow Leopard and Windows 7 64-bit dual boot. I have done a search and cannot find any reference to this problem on my hardware.
I have had no issues in Windows 7 when using Bootcamp v3.0. In the last week I have upgraded to Bootcamp v3.1. (completed twice, rolled back in between to prove that the issues was related to the Apple Update)
After I update to v3.1, I have issues with my wireless network. The network cannot resolve the name for any internet address. I can connect to wireless networks (tried multiple networks), all the DHCP settings seem to be retrieved correctly (Gateway, DNS etc) and I can ping local and machines outside my network without an issue provided I use the IP address. (Skype works - which uses direct IPs rather than names I have found over time)
As soon as I use a name for a destination for Web traffic, Mail, pinging (any application), my Macbook Pro cannot resolve the address and just bombs out.
If I connect to a wired network, the machine works perfectly and name resolution on that interface works. If I rollback (using Windows 7 rollback capability) to before the v3.1 Bootcamp is installed, the wireless networking also works perfectly.
I noticed this in the support area at apple:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3196
But this refers to wireless issues in Bootcamp drivers prior to v3.1 and on 13 inch Macbook. Wonder if this is a similar issue or related?
Anyone else seen this or point me in the direction of a fix?
    Thanks,
    Thommo

I'm looking into running Windows 7 64bit on the exact same MBP you have, so I'm curious as to whether or not you've found a solution yet outside of the forums.
Do you think it might be that the bootcamp 3.1 update is only for Windows 7 32bit and not for the 64bit version?

  • WRT310N v1 and MacBook Pro wireless issues

    Hi all,
I've been having ongoing wireless issues with my WRT310N v1. I have a macbook pro (early 2009) with mac os 10.5.8. I have cable internet, with a DHCP connection. I have a computer and PS3 hardwired through the router, and they work flawlessly. The wireless, however, has never been what it should be. Internet loads slow, even though the connection speed is pretty good (not as fast as hardwired devices, but close).
    Here are the wireless settings:
    wireless config: manual
network mode: mixed (the Macbook can get wireless-n, by iPhone is only g)
    Radio band: standard 20 mhZ
wide channel: 9 (can't change this with this config, unless i go wide channel at 40 mhZ)
    standard channel: 11
    SSID broadcast: enabled
I've got WPA2 security, with AES encryption. I've set the Beacon interval to 75, and left the Fragmentation and RTS thresholds at default. The firewall is activated, and "filter anonymous internet requests" is disabled.I'm wondering if I'm losing so much speed by broadcasting a mixed signal, instead of just G or just N. I've tried transmitting only in Wireless-N, but there's no noticeable change (and the iPhone can't connect at all).
Any input at all would be really appreciated. I'm hoping I don't have to fork over $30 to linksys just to get tech support. Thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well its not necessary to power cycle your router everytime whenever you make any changes on your Router. But if you re-configure all the settings on your from scratch, then its better to power cycle your router.

  • Macbook airport wireless issue

    Hello,
I have a macbook from around 2006/2007, and up until last year has been very reliable and something that is still quite speedy.
I have an issue with the airport/wireless on the mac, whereby the signal is so intermitnent and sometimes non-existent. My internet (virgin internet super hub) works perfectly with all my other devices (iphones, ipads etc) so it's just this one device.
When I start the mac up, first of all it stats that the connection times out and unable to connect. It also wont connect when I'm around 10 feet away or further so I have to sit quite close to the router.
After around 5 minutes the signal builds gradually in strength, and gets to 1 bar, then jumps up and down from full (4 bars) to 1 bar whilst connected, never stable - this allows me to connect (just about).
I have just done a test with my iPhone and set my iphone perso
I am running Mac OS X 10.5.8 and have done all the updates for airport and software.
Right now whilst I'm writing this message the wireless strength has dropped from 3 bars and I'm now on the lowest bar.
I have had a few people look at this and the airport card (to my knowledge) has been replaced yet we still have this issue.
I also have an issue where if I unplug the power the computer instantly dies so I presume the battery is dead and needs replacing, however it works fine as long as it's plugged in. The main issue is this wireless issue which would be amazing to fix and get this old beast working perfectly again.
Any thoughts on what we can do? As stated, the internet works perfectly for all other devices and we've switched since and still have the same problem so I;m 99.9% sure it's the computer.
Many thanks for your help and look forwawrd to some feedback
    James

    Update:
I have since added a new user to the account and the problem still persists on the other user account.
I have also ran a 'network diagnostic' however because the internet kept dropping, it either stated that there was no problem or it wouldnt run at all. I have installed iStumbler and it shows signal strength ranging between 24% - 32% and the graph shows it is dropping out quite frequently.
I have seen people recommending i switch from channel 11 to channel 6, but not sure it will be this simple as we have changed routers and internet numerous times...
    Any thoughts?

This is a new issue on an old setup. The mac was recently upgraded to maverick. thanks
Say no more.. upgrading to Mavericks.. any upgrade install is prone to issues.. the Mavericks one is the worst of any recent upgrades.
Lets just try and isolate the problem.
In the setup of the AE, give different names to the two wireless bands.. so go into the airport utility.. click the AE, Click edit.. click the wireless tab.. and now type in a new name.
    Try AE24ghz
Then click the wireless options and change the name for the 5ghz..
    Make it AE5ghz
    Then update the AE.
In the computer.. select either band.. and see if your other clients are affected if they use the band that the Mac is not using.
Alternatively turn off wireless in the macbook and use ethernet.. oh please please have a Mac with an ethernet port.. otherwise buy a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter.. it is well worth having. wireless is never to be trusted.

    im running OSX 10.7.4

    Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • This is a workaround for the MBP wireless issue

There have been many topics on the MBP wireless issues already, but I thought some people might find this workaround helpful.
Firstly, my system is a 2.2Ghz MBP, running 10.4.10, and also airport extreme update 2007-04. I am using an airport express base station. My previous Powerbook never had any wireless problems, so I really couldn't blame the basestation for the MBPs poor wireless.
Warning - The workaround requires a little bit of work in the terminal. A little bit of understanding of how networks work is assumed here as well. So it is probably not for everyone ...
What I have observed - whenever the MBP loses connection, the airport basestation IP and MAC addresses are missing from the ARP table.
    - To view the ARP table, type (in a terminal window) arp -a.
So, when the MBP wireless hangs, open up the terminal and type that in.
Do a Cntrl-C if the arp command is hanging and not returning anything.
In normal situations, a list of IP addresses and MAC addresses will show up.
As others have already noted, clicking on the airport icon in the menubar, will magically bring the wireless back to life. When this happens, the ARP table also gets magically populated correctly. Coincidence? I think not!
So, the workaround is to store a PERMANENT entry in the ARP table for the airport basestation IP and MAC address. In my case, I can use the Airport Utility software to confirm what the basestation IP and MAC addresses are (note MAC address = Airport ID in Airport Utility). I found the basestation IP=10.0.1.1 and the MAC=0:11:24:07:d7:f
To create a permanent ARP table entry for my airport basestation, I opened up a terminal window, and did the following -
    1) login to my administrator account
    2) type in the following command sudo arp -s 10.0.1.1 0:11:24:7:d7:f
    3) type in my administrator password to authorise the change
    4) type in (to confirm the changes have been made) arp -a
    5) logout of my administrator account (from the terminal)
Ever since I did this, my MBP wireless performance has been flawless.
Note, if you shutdown or restart your computer, the arp entry disappears. This is ok for me as I hardly ever power down my MBP. As insurance I have added an account startup item to remind me to do the arp table entry.
This workaround is great for me because I don't have a need to use multiple wireless networks. It might not be practical for people who roam around onto different networks.
Give it a go and see if it works for you.

OK, after some further experimenting, I changed the multicast rate on my airport express. It was set at 6Mbps, and I changed it to 2Mbps.
I have read that the default multicast rate for previous 802.11g versions of Airport basestations is actually 2mbps. Excellent results so far !! I have set up a terminal command to continuously ping my airport router address every 15 sec, and there have been virtually no dropped packets so far over many hours.
    ping -i 15 10.0.1.1
Interestingly, in Apple's Airport Admin software in my MBP there is no option to set the rate at less than 6Mbps (!!!!), so I had to use the Windows XP version of Airport admin software to make this change using a windows machine. Using the XP software you can set the muticast rate as low as 1Mbps.
If you are using Apples airport admin software (Tiger and Leopard) and you commit any sort of change in settings, the multicast rate will be re-set at a minimum of 6Mbps. My understanding of the multicast rate is that setting it too high is similar to shrinking the coverage area of the basestation, and limiting access only to clients who can transmit at the required multicast rate.
So my new theory is that the dropouts are caused by the MBP dropping off the airport due to not being able to achieve the set multicast rate. (this could be due to factors such as low signal strength, excessive interference or noise).
If you are using Apples more recent Airport admin software, you are having a minimum 6mbps muticast rate set, and this might be too high for your particular environment.
    Just a theory.
(oh yeah, I enabled interference robustness on the MBP and the basestation just for good measure)

  • Latest 10.4.10 Upgrade on 7/2/2007 - did it fix the wireless issues?

I am one of the people that had to go back to 10.4.9 because of all the wireless problems that the June release of 10.4.10 introduced. I just noticed that there is an updated version of the upgrade released on July 2. Has anybody installed that one, and did the wireless issues go away (in case you had them with the previous release)?
I am just wondering if it's worth doing at this point. Last time I had to reinstall the OS starting with 10.4.6, and it was a pain. Has anyone been more courageous than me and bit the bullet?
    Thanks in advance.
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Yes, this update seemed to work for me. It is not terribly clear there are actualy two 10.4.10 updates. There is the full update, which is 279 megabytes, that gets picked up automatically by the Apple Software Update utility.
There is a second 10.4.10 update which is actually 10.4.10 v1.1. This DOES NOT get discovered automatically by the update utility. You have to manually go get the update. The v1.1 update is about 72 megabytes before unpacking.
You can find it at the following Apple support URL:

  • WRT310N Wireless Issues

I recently got the WRT310N router and I've been having some major wireless issues. First, I tried using many different forms of encryption (WEP, WPA, WPA2 Personal), but many times my computer told me I had the wrong password when I actually copied and pasted it from the Linksys router admin page. Eventually, I was able to get WPA2 Personal encryption to work (I'm not even sure how or why), but now every so often the wireless signal just dies and I usually have to manually reset the router in order to get it back. Sometimes it comes back on its own after some time. The time it takes for the wireless to die is variable: it can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 20 hours. I have noticed however that it tends to die when a 2nd wireless user connects, although this may be coincidence. I tried removing wireless encryption, but this didn't help the problem. The firmware is the latest version as well. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

which O.S u are using on computers ?
First , If you have wireless - G adapters in computers pre-installed.
Follow the Magic Link for Information , what to change and where.
Second , If u are using Wireless N adapters in computers pre- installed.
Follow The Magic-2 Link For Information , what to change and where.
Third , If problem still persist .
Try this Magic -3 Link For Information , what to change and ofcourse where.
observe these settings, and dont forget to Power cycle whole network after saving the settings.

  • THis Wireless Issue is a Head Scratcher

As some know, I bought 2 Macbooks in Dec '06 and was experiencing all sorts of wireless issues early on. Dropped connections, SLOW transfer speeds while networked to my Imac, etc.
At some point Netgear released new firmware for the 824, and all seemed right in the wireless world for at least 2 months.
No issues with OS updates or airport updates, it seemed.
Al of a sudden last week, I went back to the extremely slow speed when networked from the macbook (wireless) to the iMac G4 800 (wired) and nothing so far will fix it.
The wireless transfer happens in 500K packets and a 4 meg file takes 4 minutes to transfer. Yet if I plug in the ethernet cable to the macbook - it works as it should.
What I can't figure out is what happened to make this annoying issue return out of the blue.
I am also back to slow page loads via Safari and page hangs.
Of course I have rebooted the router -
I can't figure out why for at least 2 months everything worked perfectly after months of sub par wireless performance and then back to **** - with everything back to sub par except not dropping connection anymore.
    Thoughts?

I think the first thing I'd check for is if some source of interference returned after a few months of absence. I have a 2.4 GHz cordless phone that will nuke my 2.4 GHz WiFi connections - but only sometimes - when the phone happens to pick a channel that coincides with my WiFi. It could well be that a phone in your neighbor's house gets on your channel, and if the the phone doesn't experience any trouble may sit on your WiFi channel for a long time. In my case, my Panasonic phone bothers the WiFi, but the WiFi never bothers the phone.
The other thing you might want to look for is how many IP packets are being discarded by your Mac's network interface. You can do that my opening a terminal window and doing "netstat -s | more" The -s option gets you a rather extensive list of Ethernet statistics. What you want to look for is anything related to retransmitted packets. If you are experiencing more than a 1% IP packet loss, Ethernet performance can degrade rather ungracefully. (Note, I'm talking about layer 3 and above IP packets). It isn't unusual for 15-20% frame loss at layer 2 in the WiFi connecdtion.
There are a lot of variables here, and it is difficult to give you an answer that would be a one-step magic pill. There could be several problems at once. The best test would be: does one computer have lousy web page load times over WiFi, but the other computer has quick web access.
If both computers are having problems loading web pages, then there is something wrong with the router and/or WiFi interference. If just one computer has poor performance, then you need to look at the software on that computer.
    Best wishes for finding it.

  • No Wireless Issues - Post Your Router

There is a "Wireless Issues - Post Your Router" thread, so this one will take a look at all routers that do NOT have any issues at all with any model of MacBook Pro. Unfortunately I can't add to it personally since Airport won't connect to my Linksys WRT54G intermittently. I was looking at the DLink DI-634M, so if anyone has any experience with that one, please post that as well.

Linksys WRT54GX4... A great router that supports 4 Windows XP systems (3 desktops and 1 laptop) and 1 Macbook Pro. Since I've had my MBP, I've had no connectivity problems whatsoever...

  • Presario V6000 Wireless Issues

Recently the wireless adaptor for my Presario V6310CA has stopped working. I read on a multitude of pc support forums that this is a common issue with the motherboard for these particular models. I also read that Compaq is repairing this issue for free since it is a highly common defect with these makes.
My warranty has already expired and i am wondering if i am eligible for a replacement motherboard.

Yes well it was not really a recall but a "warranty enhancement" which meant they would not contact you but if you contacted them they would provide the benefit. There was also a class action against nVidia that may have involved your model but it, too is now closed. The laptop is 4 or maybe 5 years old. You could get it repaired for about $100 or even a bit less and the repair techniques are getting better. It also might not really be the video card/motherboard but some simpler problem. But the bottom line is whatever you do with it at this point is going to be from your pocket, not HP's. Don't shoot the messenger, I am just saying.
