Recent Recommended updates jacked my iMac.

UPDATES! Updates! This reminds me of why I converted to MAC from Windows; Updates would mess up my systems. That was years ago.
Zoom forward 15 years to 2 days ago when I installed the recent updates offered by auto-notification; this was never a problem in the past, so I felt safe to do so... after all... it's a MAC. YA?
Well, now, I reboot and reboot, I get squat,,, the system boots to the Apple icon, the screen flickers constantly and the iMac shuts down.
What's up with that?
So is this drive toast? Do I re-image? Is there a keystroke to by-pass?
DETAILS:  Before update attempt.
OSX-10.9.5
iMac (ITEL) 2007
4GB ram

Since you have 10.9.5 installed what were you updating? Do you see only the Apple icon or do you also see the rotating timer below it? Are you able to boot from your Recovery  HD?
Boot Using Command+R keys:
  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
"COMMAND" and the "R" keys together.
  3. Release the keys when the Utilities Menu appears.
If so, then click on Disk Utility in the main menu and click on the Continue button.
Repair
After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu. If you still cannot boot the computer then you need to reinstall OS X:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If your HDD fails to appear in the Disk Utility sidebar, then your drive needs to be replaced. If you cannot do the above repairs but the HDD is listed in the Disk Utility sidebar, then you need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

After the most recent Thunderbolt update my 2011 iMac keeps hung in the loading screen! I've tried restarting it a few times without success. Any help? Thanks!

I had the same problem. Try this. Launch FaceTime. Click the toggle to turn it off; or Command-K. Quit. Do a restart, you shouldn't get the popup. You could then turn FaceTime back on if you wish. Either way, the popup should be gone from then on.

did recent recommended update cause incompatibility with HP printer, causing error message and printer to print blank pages?

Why not contact HP tech support for assistance since they make the printer. While on their site you can look for an updated printer driver. Otherwise, try deleting the current installed driver, reset the print system, then reinstall your printer's driver.

  • Hello all.   Hope someone can help me. I recently downloaded some  updates for my imac.  Since doing this the computer starts up but I get no logon box.  The home screen opens but I can't open any programs or files. I've tried rebooting, no joy. Help!!

Hello all..   I hope someone here can help.  I recently downloaded some updates to my imac.  Since then the computer starts but I get the home screen opening without the logon box.    I can't open any programs or files and if I click on the Safari tab it disappears from the dock.  I've tried rebooting with no joy.
I contacted technical help at Apple and was told to hold down the ctrl and alt keys with two other keys, I think the S or P keys when powering up. This worked
and the computer seemed fine but now the problem has reappeared.  Is there a way to removed downloaded updates from the computer or revert it to an earlier state?   Sorry for the long question. Hopefully one of you clever people can help.   Simon

It's always good to go with one thing at a time and stay focused on that. Let's start with the OS you're running. Click on the Apple menu > About This Mac. What does it say under Mac OS X version ?

  • Lexmark P6250 scanner not working with iMac after recent software update, any ideas?

The scanner has always worked with the iMac but after a recent software update only the printer works now.  I have searched the apple communities boards and have downloaded a variety of drivers suggested but nothing has solved the issue.
When I load print and scan from system preferences, I select to open the scanner and the process just hangs.   I can see the scanner and am able to select to open but not able to scan.
Any ideas on how to resolve?

Unfortunately I have tried this and I have downloaded new drivers and restarted both the iMac and printer/scanner numerous times but I still only have the printer working.
I have tried to use preview via system preferences, print and scan and the when I select open scanner for preview the application hangs.  I have also tried to use image capture and there is an error when selecting the scanner device of "Lexmark Language Error".  When selecting overview within image capture I am advised that the size tryng to be scanned is too large when nothing has been selected and the default setting are standard size and then image capture hangs.
All features were working fine prior to conducting a software update about 8-10 weeks ago.  I have downloaded further software updates which I had hoped would sort this issue but it hasn't.

  • Numbers on my iOS devices have recently been updated but not on my iMac is this correct ?

Numbers on both our iPads and our iPhone were recently updated but there has been no update for our iMac is this correct ?

Yes, Apple updated the iWork Apps for iOS twice this month. The first Update added features just like the Mac Counterparts but the second Updatehas bugfixes and fixed perfomance issues.
Since the last Updates iWork finally runs fine on my iPad 3 :-)

It's possible that you need new drivers from HP, in order to be compatible with OS X 10.8.3. Looking at HP website, they haven't released new drivers since last November. You might need to wait for new drivers or contact HP to push for an update.

  • 27" iMac i7 won't startup after recent security update

My iMac does not boot properly since I installed the recent security update.  All I get is the circle slash symbol.  Anyone have a solution?

    Hi Carlos
Slip in the OS X DVD that came with your iMac, startup your iMac on the DVD, then open Disk Utility and Repair your Macintosh HD startup volume.

  • Recent Software Update - Recommended for FCP X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4 Users

There is a recent Software Update ("ProApps Quicktime Codecs") that is recommended for the FCP X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4.  Should FCP 7/FCS 3 Users download this update as well, or avoid to prevent any conflicts?

I have one boot drive with 10.6.8 and FCS 3, and a 2nd boot drive with 10.9 and the FCP X Trial - best to avoid any problems.  Everything is smooth as glass at the moment.

  • IMac won't reboot after recent wifi update

27 inch iMac running Lion OSX. Installed the recent wifi update that popped up in software update and now the iMac hangs on the gray boot screen. Ideas?

Try a safe boot.  Hold the Shift key down between the start up tone and the Apple logo/pinwheel.
If successful, Go to System Preferences > Startup Disk > Select your MacIntosh HD and restart.

  • IMacs blue screen after recent Windows Update!!

    Hi,
Our iMacs running XP-Pro did a recent round of Windows Updates 9/2. They are all blue screening Pagefaultin non-paged area, win32k.sys problem.
    System Restore does not work
Can only boot to Safe Mode
Tried Last Known Good configuration (worked on some)
Has anyone else seen this and has a fix?
    Thanks

I have seen this problem on a bunch of iMacs running bootcamp at multiple sites. The issue is definetly a mixture of ATI graphics cards and a recent windows update (I have not been able to identify which one). The fix has been simple though.
    1. Reboot the iMac
    2. Hold down the Option(alt) key
    3. Select Windows partition
    4. Quicky tap the F8 key after the partition selection
    5. Select Enable VGA mode
    6. Install BootCamp 3.0 drivers.
    7. Reboot
That should do it. I have fixed about 20 macs this way, no fuss, plus the newer drivers add a whole bunch of enhancements to the iMac running XP.

UPDATING OSX MOUNTAIN LION ADOBE VIEWER. recently received e-bill statement. could not view. site recommended updating adobe viewer. as this feature comes OEM from Apple, how is this accomplished? Note, this was an online view for the PDF document.

Thanks for your help.  Final question. So I am assuming that PDF funcitonality is accomplished via Preview.  I assume then that the PDF creation in Mail is also similarly accomplished, that is not via an Adobe product, but equivalent funcitonality. I see now that I can download Adobe. But, does the Apple PDF equivlant provide updates to keep up witht the new encoding structures released by Adobe, so that I can only update the Apple equivalent, or is this not practical because Apple would be chasing Adobe for software updates?
