Recent Repair - What did they fix?

My wife's iBook recently crashed, and since it was out of warranty we sent it in as a flat rate depot repair... my question is how do you decipher what they did?
The Service Details form that came back with the computer lists the following under the service description and parts section:
631-0342 SVC, ECN, Q72B, REED SWITCH
630-7386 PCBA, MLB, Q72B, 1.33GHZ, REV1
631-0171 SUBASSY, AP EXT/BT, 11CHNL, Q

Josh:
It would have been helpful if you gave us more details about the specs of the iBook. In any case, here's what I make of it:
The first set of numbers are parts numbers.
The first item is the reed switch, which was serviced.
The next item refers to the logic board
and the final item refers to Airport Extreme.
What they actually did, you will have to ask them.
Cheers

on the iphone4 (not s) did they fix the signal problem and if they did when did they fix it how long ago (date roughly)???????

Apple has not made any changes to the iPhone 4 since its release. The over 80 million people with the phones don't seem to think there's a serious problem.

  • I cannot get sound from apple TV. Has anyone had the same experience and what did they do?

Hi, I recently bought Apple TV 2nd gen. I can, after a while, get access to my library but when I start to play movies I cannot get sound. Has anyone had a similar experience? If so what did you do to overcome the problem?

Do the movies contain both stereo and 5.1 audio.
Have you tried toggling the Dolby Digital setting or the Audio Output setting.

  • What did They Do To This Forum?

What happened to the Apple Support Communities?  I don't understand it at all.
It used to be so helpful, but, not anymore!
Will they ever change back to a more user friendly format?

Yes there has been a radical change and there are still many issues to be addressed and rectified.
The WHOLE forum needs to be rectified now.
    But slowly things are improving.
    Um, no they are not.
You can safely assume it will be several months before a status quo level will be achieved.  I base this on my personal experience on system design and implementation.
That is if there is anyone still in this catastrophe of a forum when / if they fix it.
    Try to be patient.
I'm definitely NOT going to hold my breath waiting for this mess to be fixed.
And maintain a sense of humor.
The only thing I find funny about all of this, is that Apple thought they were making a step forward, when they really just alienated most of the people on the forum.

  • Recent Pandora update did NOT fix a glaring problem

The problem being when you lock your Touch (screen blanked) while playing Pandora, you'll hear about 5-10 audio dropouts per minute. The only solution for the time being is to keep the screen active (I dim mine way down to minimum). Pandora IS aware of the problem--I trust they will get us another update with that issue fixed.

You are mixing EFI and SMC and just... ranting!

People often recommend or practice "repair permissions" when what they need is to weed the clutter in their cache folder, or 'take out the trash' or something else. Changing the oil isn't going to help if you need brake fluid (even though its usually a good part of regular maintenance).
Applying EFI update on some systems did 'break' or alter USB behavior though, so there was a lot of changes - had I known more, I might have waited even longer before applying.
luckily both systems seem to be working... knock on wood...

  • I have to send my 3Gs in for a repair; what will they look at?

I must send my new 3GS in for repair.  Because my screen is frozen with the Apple log, I cannot clear history or cookies or anything like that. I am an adult and I do like to look at photos using "Yahoo Images" or occasionally to read adult literature.  I have never, ever accessed anything considered exploitive but I do know that I have been directed to sites that are a paid site or require a flash player or whatever and I do not access those (I back out).  I did click on some anime just to see what it was but I have no interest in such material as it does look like suspiciously close to child **** to me.  Will the tech support be interested in what I have on my phone?  I also frequently post questions to Yahoo Answers of a personal nature.

we are users here, just like you.  We would have no idea what the techs look at.

  • What did they do in post processing to get this effect?

    Hello,
Can anyone please let me know what post processing they did to this photo to get this effect?
    Thank you very much.

Effect?  It just looks like a well-executed, natural-looking photo shot with a good wide angle lens to me.  Indeed it's very nice.
At one time I might have said they did noise reduction and maybe some HDR work, but with modern gear and great converters like Camera Raw (especiually considering the current set of adjustment abilities), it's not inconceivable to get an image like that right out of a raw file.  Landscapes often benefit from increased color saturation, and I can imagine the Clarity control might have helped make the air just seem very clear.  It's possible they cloned- (or spot-healed-) out any little bits of debris visible to give the image a very clean feel.
It's also sharpened nicely for web presenetation.  There's even a lot of detail in the 2048 pixel version, though at that size you start to see sharpening halos.
Clear, wide angle landscapes with light reflections, not to mention pretty clouds and all the colors of the spectrum, can be very nice indeed, as this shot underscores.

  • Did they fix the ancient pica bug in CC '014?

This but goes back, I’m guessing, as far as version 9, when Illustrator fell into perpetual beta. Use picas as the default value or manually enter pica values in any dialogue. Use a value between -1p0 and 0p0, like -0p9. As soon as you leave the field or click OK the value becomes a positive. If picas are the default unit and you use cursor keys to adjust the field’s value, once you get down to 0p0 and press down again you will briefly see -0p3, but the values with then change to 0p3. Hold down the down arrow and the field value ill just fluctuate between 0p0 and 0p3.
I have make tickety-six bug reports to Adobe, so either they have known about this bug for years and have no ability to fix it, or they do not read their bug reports.

    Hi Scott,
Very familiar with that bug... reported it several times myself.
No, it is not fixed in CC 2014.
I just use Xpt instead. So, rather than using -0p1 or -1p0, I insert -1pt or -12pt respectively. Then the arrows work as expected.

  • What did they do to iMovie?

Is it just me, or does iMovie have LESS ability in terms of transitions, titles, etc.? What happened to the "Star Wars" title effect? WHat happened to all the old transitions? WHat happened to the ability to choose between different views in the timeline? Also, I can no longer control audio fading of audio throughout a project (make it louder, then quieter, then louder, then quieter). WHy do all my transitions need to be the same length (this is very limiting) Am I over reacting? AM I overlooking the fact that these things can be done and I just don't see them? Are there work arounds? ANy feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I agree with the current wave of posts suggesting that people send feedback to the following link:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/imovie.html
I have sent a lengthy post to feedback this am suggesting that the next update to iLife 08 reinsert iMovie 06 and call it iMovie Classic, etc and then renaming iMovie 7 to be Movie Express. That would broaden the iLife suite with an additional app and better inform users as to what is going on. It would also appease those who want to do things in such a simple manner that they don’t even need an iMovie level app but something along the lines of some third party s/w that does almost exactly what this new version of iMovie does.
I suppose I wish I could be so skilled in my video taking that I wouldn’t even need to edit my video. Simply import and encode. But what about all the special effects, transitions, motion, etc? The edit/addition of audio, ,etc? Using GB to do such things as well as inserting chapter makers is a very obtuse work around.
As it is now, people are in an uproar over the change, seeing it as a mixed message as to what Apple has in store for the future of their video editing apps, not only iMovie, but also FCE and FCS, etc. This can be particularly upsetting for people in education who have been touting iLife as a very easy to use method for creating/editing video. For Apple to have done what it has done with no heads up or explanation as to the why fors, etc leaves many people in the lurch. To me the education market is just to important a market for Apple to make significant changes to s/w & h/w and not inform its' customers. Too many people are making financial decisions that will have a significant financial impact on Apple if it does not go about the informing process in the right fashion.
So it then becomes incumbent on the customer base to let the vendor know what it wants. So we do need to reply to feedback. Maybe Apple will hear/listen and do the right thing. Then again maybe it won’t. I do believe that we are all aware that ranting/venting on the forums only leads to threads being locked, deleted or otherwise removed.

  • Beta worked- what did they do to final version?

I'm adding images to the new version 3 (because Version 3 isn't importing/opening the Beta 3 catalog, looks like it's corrupt) I replaced the beta version (wish i didn't now - i guess it would have timed out anyway though.)
Now after only adding less than 1/5th of my image collection version 3 final release is crashing hard and not letting me go further. I didn't have this problem at all in any of the Beta 3 versions - very frustrating!!!! Not sure what i'm going to do now!

    digartz wrote:
So apparently Version 3 public has a limited number of photos per catalog, where the beta version did not. Once i started deleting/removing photos and tried to add some more photos the crash didn't occur. i'll try to see what the actual number turns out to be, and perhaps it's a mega limit instead of a piece number.
This certainly is not the case with LR, 2 or 3!
There are users around with more than 100K images in one catalog. Something else, more specific, must be going wrong in the process.
    digartz:
Are you importing RAWs with XMP sidecars, or non-RAWs with XMP data written to them by LR3 Beta2? If so, corrupt XMP data might be a possible cause for it
Have you tried importing your photos in smaller batches ?

  • Can you see a history of who was looking at files? What did they see?

I accidentally left file sharing on and noticed that someone inside the hotel was conected, is there any way to find any info of who was connected?

Hi skube70, and a warm welcome to the forums!
AS far as I know... NO, but likely they saw nohing other than what is in your Shared folder even so, they need a Username & Password to see more.

  • What did they do to the print engine in LR2?

    Please look at this example:
    http://flickr.com/photos/dtinsley/2726203047/sizes/l/
The printer is an HP Photosmart 8450. The OS is Windows XP Home SP2. In LR 1.3 I always let the printer manage the printing and had Colorsmart/sRGB as the profile. The exact same settings in LR2 produced the second example. After twiddling with things I finally got the third print by letting LR2 manage the printing and selecting the profile for the printer and paper I was using.
Anyone know why such a radical change in prints between LR 1.3 and LR 2 using the exact same settings?

I have a potentially related problem - we produce a weekly podcast, and as of a couple of weeks ago, our podcast stopped showing up in search results. Subscribers to continue receiving new weekly additions, but no one can find us in the directory at the moment.

  • What bugs are fixed?

Is it possible to find out which bugs apple thinks they have fixed with a release of their software? I also have this issue with front row: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=485117&tstart=15
and from what I have been told, QuickTime is really the 'engine' behind playing music and videos and the ITunes (for example) is just a "skin" over this engine. Perhaps this is not true. Anyway, I would like to find out if the recent release of QuickTime fixes this bug. Also, is there anyway to find out from Apple if they plan to ever fix a particular bug? The only thing I use my mini for is as the head of my home theater, and the only reason I would upgrade is because they plan to fix this bug.
BTW, up until 3 months ago, I was a lifelong PC user. I thought that those PC/Mac commercials were really funny. Then I got a mac. All those people who had somehow convinced themselves that macs are more stable/secure/easier to use/etc. than a PC are just fooling themselves. I can't believe how much trouble I have had trying to do simple things and how much obfuscation I have gotten from people at the apple store, tech support. Just for grins, anyone here who thinks that mac is so great, try to play a song encoded as .flac in ITunes. Even better, try to get it to play two in a row without a gap between them. Then, go to an apple store and ask one of the 'geniuses' how easy that is to do.
Sorry for the rant... I feel better now.

Apple does not announce what bugs they fix. They almost never do for any of their computers either.
The current update was a security and minor bug fix, no major new additions or substractions.
The only way you can find out what updates do is to read through other websites where people "autopsy" the upgrade software and post what they find different in the code. Those are not highly reliable because Apple often includes things in their software that are not activated, just idle code.
If you click on the Apple links, all you will get are a direct link to the Update page from the users manual, to explain how updates are done, and a general message stating this is a "security and stability update."
