Recent Windows Convert Having Trouble W/External HD

I bought a Seagate 160GB external HD for my Windows laptop. While the laptop died a very slow and painful death, I got a PowerBook G4. I'd love to use my new comp with my HD but I don't know how to reformat the drive. Will this cause me to lose all my data?

The installer/restore CD that came with your PowerBook will have a program in the Utilities folder called "Disk Utility" (OS X) or "Drive Setup" (pre-OS X). You can use either to reformat the hard drive as a Mac OS Extended volume, but this will erase all of the data currently on the drive. You don't necessarily need to reformat it, because Macs recognize PC-formatted volumes. Have you tried connecting it to the PowerBook yet?

  • Recent Windows Convert - How to Organize iPhoto

Hi all--  I'm a recent Windows convert and could use some advice on how to organize iPhoto.
I have an external 2TB drive that I've attached to my new iMac that has all my personal files from my Windows machine on it.  It's organized like "Videos" "Music" "Pictures" "Docuemnts" "Downloads" etc..etc..
I want to KEEP this organization if possible as I share it to my MediaCenter HTPC that will stay Windows.  The MediaCenter library expects to see the Pictures folder and sub-folders (what I think translate to Events or Albums in iPhoto - not sure which).
    So my question is:
I see that iPhoto stores all it's pictures in its' Library file in a Masters>Yr>Mo>Da folder structure.  Is this a requirement to maintain this structure?  Makes sharing it to the MediaCenter & extenders very hard to browse.
    Comments/Suggestions?  Thanks!

Simple suggestion: Don't use iPhoto at all.
It has no cross platform ability, and as you want to store your material on the MediaCenter, which is a NAS you find yourself with a
Referenced Library - that is, one where iPhoto doesn't copy the files into its own library - tricky enough for someone not familiar with macs and iPhoto
    and
The Library on one disk with the files on another. You end up with this because iPhoto needs the Library on a disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the Media Center isn't.
In this scenario, iPhoto indexes your files in place but this is not iPhoto's comfort zone. Specifically, if any element of the path to the files changes, then you could find yourself fixing it for every single photo, one at a time.

  • Having trouble matching External display's colour to Macbook Pro

I got myself an external monitor very recently, a Dell Ultrasharp model which I think is a great external. Problem is I'm having trouble getting the colour settings to match. I'll be able to both the Dell and my Macbook screen to match up certain colours perfectly but others will appear grossly inconsistant with each other. For example, if I get blues to match up, browns or reds may be different shades entirely. So I'd like to ask for help tuning it to work on every colour properly. I've tried using calibartion in system preferences but things still look wrong in some places. Is there any way I can apply the "color LCD" setting on the Macbook into the monitor?

I think your friend is trying to get you to buy him a new TV. The TV going out and the computer being connected to it were likely coincidental. If Macbook Pros were destroying external monitors as your friend suggests then there would be more reports and outraged customers. Yours is the first post I've seen suggesting that a TV was destroyed because of a Macbook Pro.

  • Windows user having trouble reading attachments since 10.4.4

Has anyone else experienced problems sending attachments (specifically Word docs) to Windows users? I have experienced this only since the latest batch of updates. I have checked my settings and 'Windows friendly' is the default for mail. I have also sent the docs I have had trouble with to an old mac and this works fine which leads me to think its 10.4.4 as the cause?
    Help!!!!!!!!!!!

As I have emailed, in part:
Well, this Mac friend is not all right! Please tell me the exact method of creating this document, and the version of Word being used. It is not recognized as a valid format by any of my applications that should open it. Also, tell me how you are connected to the internet.
    and
Placing the cursor over the attachment, reports it to be of the type octet stream. This is most often seen when an exchange server, or some other MS program is involved, and working improperly.
Also, try switching off windows friendly setting and sending to me again. Does the document open properly when you open the message sent to me in the Sent mailbox?
Try sending me a JPEG, or other type of attachment -- this might help to check for a transmission error. This does not appear to be simply a Mail problem.

  • Having trouble with external HD showing up...

    Anyone...HELP.
I have an external hard drive I use on my MacBook (I've used it for over a year and its fine). However, whenever the external HD is unplugged (usually by accident) I am not able to have it show up again.
I've turned everything off and back on again. Usually I turn the ex-hd off first, turn off comp, unplug & replug ex-hd USB, turn comp on, & turn ex-hd on (in that order) and still nothing shows up.
Has anyone had this problem? Does the order of which I turn on and off the ex-hd effect anything? I didn't think it did matter but obviously I am doing something wrong.
    Help please.

"external HD is unplugged (usually by accident) I am not able to have it show up again. " > you must counter mesure this problem because it is not good for firewire or usb for that matter.
"I've turned everything off and back on again." Bad implementation just creates more of a problem.
"Usually I turn the ex-hd off first," You MUST unmount the firewire drive or usb first (Always). Then turn turn off the external firewire/usb power and wait a few seconds.
"turn off comp, unplug & replug ex-hd USB" Once unmount occurs then power down then disconnect cable Always from Mac first then the device whether it be firewire or usb.
Now how to reset all? Disconnect all cables from Mac and device. Remove battery from Macbook. Press and hold power button for 5 seconds. restart Mac book. Power on device. Connect cable to Mac first then to device.

  • HAving trouble with external hard drive

    Hey
i have a mac mini 1.83ghz intel core duo its about a year old now. I have a trekstore 160gb 2.5 external harddrive and for some reason it wont show up on my computer or the harddrive programm from apple. It worked fine for awhile and i was able to transfer all th data that i want to store on their as a back up and then one day i plug it in and it wont show up. Now this kinda ***** i paid 80 euro for the stupid thing have all m files backed up and its not showing up on my mac.
    Any suggestions?
    THX

If you've got another Mac around the house or know someone who does, the next step would be to try connecting it to something other than the Mac Mini. If the drive works on another Mac, then there may be something wrong with the Mini; if the drive doesn't work on another Mac, continue being concerned about the integrity of the drive.
Also relevant for 2.5" drives, some of these don't come with AC adapters and instead draw power from the USB or FireWire bus. Though the FireWire bus can supply more than enough power to keep a 2.5" drive spinning, USB power is usually pretty measly, requiring either a complimetary AC adapter or a strange two-headed USB cable to draw extra power.

  • Illus. CS3 Windows: Im having trouble selecting text when objects are beneath it.

Technically, I CAN select text, its just a pain in the ***. There is a very fine line to click on and I usually end up selecting the obnect that the text is on top of. If someone knows another way to do this I will be most appreciative.
    Cheers,

Have you perhaps enabled the Type Object Selection by Path Only option (see Illustrator preferences) ?
    If so, disable it.

  • Having trouble with Flash Player in regards to youtube

    Hello,
Recently I started having trouble with Flash Player in regards to using it with youtube. Sometimes all I see is a blank white screen and sometimes I do see the video with no surrounding youtube webpage or suggested videos etc. Nothing has changed on my computer as far as I know except the usual updates etc. I have tried uninstalling Flash Player and reinstalling with no luck. I even tried an older version. I am running windows XP and IE and have McAfee for my anti-virus. I am not the most computer savy person in the world and could sure use some help.
    Thanks,
    Ron

    Hitomi,
Thanks for the links. I am pretty sure it is not a problem with Flash Player itself but something else that is causing this. I don't know how to do a "screen shot", but even if I did I don't know that it would do anygood to show that because the youtube video screen and surrounding webpage only show for a second and then it goes totally white.
    Pat,
    Here is what I found:
    Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family
    Driver Provider          Intel corporation
    Driver Date               6/8/2005
    Driver Version          6.14.10.4332
Digital Signer               Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatability Publis
    Update:
This morning after doing some further reading and research on the Internet I tried running youtube in the  "InPrivate Browsing" window and youtube worked fine. So thinking I should delete my Internet Browing History, Cache, and Cookies, based on what I read I went ahead and did that but it still doesn't want to work. I think I did the deletions correctly? As I mentioned above I am not very computer savvy but can get by on the basics. Where should I go from here based on this info?
    Thanks,

  • Firefox 4.0.1 closes with no error message. When I restore the session I get: Well, this is embarrassing. Firefox is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs. This is usually caused by a recently opened web page. What can I do?

After opening certain websites, pogo, firefox 4.0.1 closes with no error message. When I restore the session I get: Well, this is embarrassing. Firefox is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs. This is usually caused by a recently opened web page.
I have had this problem before and had to reinstall an earlier version of firefox.
The error console has a long list of errors, many of them end with: does not implement nsIObserver. Is there a way to send the information on the error console to firefox support?
Redownloading Firefox 4.0 will fix my problem until I either close firefox or turn off my computer. The problem recurs when I open firefox again.

    See:

It is also possible that there is a problem with the files [http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js sessionstore.js] and sessionstore.bak in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder]
Delete the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note).

Flash plugin keeps crashing. Following directions here, I tried to reset firefox and get error message "Well this is embarrassing. Firefox is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs. This is usually caused by a recently opened web page."

If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more recent crash reports that have a "bp-" prefix:

Try to set the Flash plug to click-to-play by setting the permissions for Flash to "Ask To Activate" in "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins".
That way you can activate the Flash plugin when you need it via the Lego block icon on the location bar.

  • I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external drive.  I change the kind to "original" but when I view the video from the external drive once exported, the sound and picture are distorted.

I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external hard drive.  I have tried to export from iphoto with changing kind to "original" but when I open the video from the external drive the quality is effected.  I have also tried copying the video to my desktop and then dragging and dropping onto the drive...same problem. Any suggestions?  I would like to save everything to my external drive so that I can delete all of iphoto library and then reimport to correct a few things.

The file sizes are identical.  In the finder I did a search for all .mov files.  Then when they came up, I went through them and named each one so that they would be easier to find.  I am a new mac user and am used to windows.  I realized later that I should not have done this....with a mac files should be named within iphoto app...not finder....When I went to open the videos in iphoto, it wouldn't allow me.  I had to go into finder, copy to desktop and reimport into iphoto.  Then the videos worked again.  However, I had the problem with the poor video quality when copied to external drive before that.  Actually the first problem I had was when I copied to ext drive...videos were copying as an image...so I learned that you have to change "kind" to original before exporting....then that problem was solved...now they are videos, not images but not of a great quality.  Skips, sound and images are not in sync...etc...
