Recently installed a new hard drive and i am now unable to use the Software Update Feature?

Error message:   The Software Update Server (192.168.1.12) is not responding? it then goes on to say check network connectivity but everything appears to be fine both normal and wireless. And also programs such as itunes or iphoto will say that there is an update needed and the updater will search and just come up with the error msg.
i have been searchin for a solution for ages and still nothing. iv tried a few things but nothing seems to work.
im running
Mac OS X 10.6.8
any thoughts?
thanks

In >Library\Preferences find com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist move it to the desktop, log out of your account then log back in and then run Software Update. If it runs smoothly delete the file you moved onto the desktop.

I recently installed a new hard drive and now when I turn it on, it just shows a blinking file with a question mark on it. What do I do now? How do I install the software if I can't get on the internet from my MacBook? Can the apple store do it for me?

Which operating system version did you have?
We also need to know which exact model Mac (almost always include this information when you post - saying MaBookPro is almost as bad as saying "Ford car" in terms of the variety of submodels) because some newer models can boot from the Internet.

Since it will not boot then a hardware test can't be run. You could try FireWire Target Disk Mode and if it works then access from another Mac to run tests on the new drive. You could also try installing the OS X software from the host computer. If this does not work then professional help should be considered.

I recently installed a new hard drive in a MacBook 2007 and then 10.6.3. I'd like to be able to Sync iCal to the calendars I have created on other devices (new iCloud account and an ME account). I can't upgrade to 10.7 or 10.8 because the MacBook is 32 bit. Just looking for a workaround as this is not a primary device.

You should update to the latest version of Snow Leopard, 10.6.8 - you can download it here; however it's still not compatible with iCloud and though you can connect to access your email you cannot access any other of iCloud's facilities.
However some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point. I've not tried it: use at your own discretion.
    To access the email:
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard
Are you sure you can't upgrade to Lion? It requires an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which you may well have, though it also needs 2GB RAM so you might need to add additional RAM (might not be worth it for what you want). The published specs don't mention 32 or 64 bit. You can buy Lion by ringing the Apple Store at the number at bottom left of this page.

I have about 300 songs missing anyway to update the folder to add the missing songs?
If you know the location and you have all the songs in there, you could try the below:
    For iTunes 9:
Choose File > Library > Organize Library
    For iTunes 8:
Choose File > Library > Consolidate Library
    For iTunes 7 or earlier:
    Choose Advanced > Consolidate Library.
    A message will pop up.
    For iTunes 9:
Place a check next to "Consolidate files" and click OK.
    For iTunes 8 and earlier:
    Click Consolidate.
This action copies all of your music and other media files to the new location.

  • I installed a new hard drive and OS X 10.6  and now I don't have an App Store

I had to install a new hard drive because my previous one failed.  I installed the OS X 10.6 disk that came with my laptop and almost everything is back to normal, except that I do not have an App Store and my iTunes will not connect to the iTunes store.  What can I do?  I updated my software using software updates and nothing has changed.  Please help!

App store in added as part of 10.6.6 and later.  Make sure you have run all updates.  What version of the OS is reported using the menu item " > About this Mac"?

  • Installing a new hard drive and reinstalling Leopard 10.5 on a ibook g4

I have run out of hard drive space on my 30 GB ibook g4. I installed Leopard 10.5 about 8 months ago and hope to use Time Machine to restore the system. I also have made hard backups of my documents, photos, videos, address book etc. My question is do I need anything else besides my Leopard 10.5 install DVD to format the new hard drive and install the leopard 10.5 OS x operating system? I do not have a clone boot disc or firewire boot discs. Thanks for your advice.

Another alternative is to put a Seagate or Hitachi bare HD into a FireWire enclosure—basically, rolling your own (for a significant savings). Here's one http://www.amazon.com/Macally-Firewire-Storage-Enclosure-PHR-250CC/dp/B0000B3ALD
I have two Argosy enclosures with 200 GB Hitachi HDs. They used to be available at http://www.pcmicrostore.com/PartDetail.aspx?q=p:10500933 but apparently they ceased carrying them. However, a google search for ARGOSY EXTERNAL 3.5" firewir yields http://www.pcmicrostore.com/PartDetail.aspx?q=p:10502056%3Bc:100187%3Br:google which isn't a bad price.

  • Installing a new hard drive and using Time Machine to Restore system

I just upgraded a Macbook (2006) hard drive and had problems importing the Time Machine backup. The problem was that the initial install discs were for Tiger, which did not support Time Machine. After numerous attempts at a work-around I solved this problem the following way:
I connected the 2006 Macbook (with new hard drive) to a newer Macbook (with Firewire port) - one with install discs for Leopard (which supports Time Machine).
I launched the newer Macbook with the install disc (#1)
I connected the two Macbook via firewire cable.
I launched the 2006 (new hard drive) Macbook in the Target Disc mode.
I connected the USB external hard drive containing the Tme Machine data to a USB port in the newer Macbook.
Next I went to the Utilities Menu on the Macbook (operating from the Install Disc) and selected Time Machine. I followed the prompts to match the source and destination. The process worked fine.
The above assumes that a new hard drive is properly formatted using Disc Utility per Apple's guidance prior to the Time Machine restoration described above.
    Cheers.
    Bill

    Bill,
No, the glass is half full!! In this case, we (collectively) have three things to brighten our day:
    1) That I was mistaken, and that your usage is completely legitimate. I definitely prefer this to what was inherent in my erroneous assumption, and I do not mind being wrong (not in the slightest).
    2) That we can be clever enough to overcome obstacles, then go out of our way to share our newfound knowledge with others. More specifically, that you have done so.
    3) That we are willing to police ourselves, if and when one of us might go astray. Even if I was wrong in this case, isn't it nice to know I am willing scold someone for being less than honorable?
Perhaps my greatest mistake was the assumption that, if you had the proper disks at one time, you would still have them, or would have said so in your initial post. My apologies. Technically speaking, the media for a given OS should always be somewhere in your possession when running that OS. In practice, however, I strongly believe that some "wiggle room" exists, guided by common sense. In this case, I believe that the fact that you purchased said media gives you a pass, regardless of whether or not you know off the top of your head where it is.
    There. Are you still saddened?
    Scott
