Recently my keyboard on my macbook pro died. i backed up the machine to my Seagate 500GB hard drive, successfully, and sent the notebook in for repairs. Now that the macbook is repaired, i can read from the seagate, but not write to it. It says read only.

Recently my Macbook Pro's keyboard failed. Using my wireless keyboard, i managed to backup everything to my 500gb Seagate external hard drive. I sent the machine in, had the keyboard repaired, and now the machine is back, and i am loading my content back onto the macbook. My problem is that the drive is now read only, and i have searched for all the obvious fixes. The lock on the permissions secion of the info block on the drive. (not present). I have even tried disk utility, but all the options are greyed out.
I am a graphic designer, and so i use my external drive extensively to move artwork around, so it is important that i can make it writable. It worked perfectly on this very same machine, two weeks ago, and nothing has changed on the drive, so i can only assume it is a software issue on the operating system.
I have read through all the forums, etc, and can find nothing that works. I am loath to change anything on the drive, as it was working perfectly on this system before the system went in for its repair.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please post a screenshot of Disk Utility that shows what you mean. Be careful not to include any private information.

Yes, I bought iPhone 5s from Apple.com/uk and paid full price(no contracts, not pay as you go). From your reply I take it that it wont be locked on O2 even though my first sim used on the device was on O2. This is helpful to know, I will change it with a new sim from 3 and see (definitely will switch off while doing so). Thanks for your suggestion. After changing the sim probably in a few days time, I will confirm to you again.

iPhoto pulls off new videos from my iPhone 5 just fine. Does iPhoto automatically come up when you connect your iPhone? If it does, you should see your iPhone under "Devices" in iPhoto and then can select the videos to transfer (select, then Import Selected), though that should happen automatically.

Are others having the same problems?

Try this. Worked for me.
- turn off your router
- turn off you Mac's after removing all available printers
- turn off all iDevices
- do a factory reset of your printer remove all cables min. 30 sec.
- turn on your router first
- ran the network set up wizard
- give your printer also a new name like "DeskJet 2015"
Something which you don't have used before.
- turn on your Mac's and add your printer
- turn on your iDevices at least.
Should work after these steps.
It worked for me including all iDevices.

Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. I haven't checked reviews recently but there's a difference between bare drives and drives with enclosures. Western Digital made some of the most reliable drives last time I checked, though the enclosures weren't all that great. It is convenient to get both in one package but I usually buy a highly rated enclosure and then put a highly rated drive in it myself. OWC sells some good enclosures but if they put a so-so drive inside of it then the package is only as good as its weakest component. If you get a package from them, ask them what drive is inside (some vendors have no idea what's inside - went to an Apple Store recently and they couldn't tell me what was inside some of their Apple brand enclosures). My first thought if buying a new drive would be to buy a OWC enclosure with a WD drive, but chek around because I may be out of date.

Copy all the content on your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes. Then go ahead and sync the iPod with your new library.

Have you opened Disk utility and formatted it? Most new HDDs come formatted for Windows, not Mac.

Well, I'm not sure how anything can fit into a 5 mm depth, so I can see why they've removed the CD drive - there probably wouldn't be enough room for the laser, LOL. Can't imagine speakers, hard drive (of any flavor), logic board and so on and so forth. Fortunately, my iMac has Applecare through early 2015 so I'm set for a while; I may check out a Mini at that point - saw that it is configurable with a fusion drive, which would make it interesting for me.

I'm just trying to get into my account on iTunes and retrieve the mp3s I lost when my hard drive crashed and there's no clear button for signing on that I can find anywhere.

If you had the MP3s on your hard drive, just what exactly makes you think that signing in somwhere is going to restore them from a dead drive?
All you can retrieve from the iTunes store would be what you purchased there, and for that, you need to log in with the same account info you used previously.
