Recently opened sites grid in new tab has disappeared, how to fix?

So I recently installed a VLC player, and after the download, I noticed that the installation had also snuck in a bunch of other programs (I assume were viruses). When I opened up Firefox moments later, I realized that when I clicked to open a new tab, the grid wasn't there, and all the sites I had pinned were gone, I only saw a blank white window. I'm not sure whether there is a connection between the installed player and my Firefox problem, all I know is that the problem occurred moments after the player was installed.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try some of the following programs to scan for malware:
* [http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware]
* [http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363 TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility]
* [http://windows.microsoft.com/MSE Microsoft Security Essentials] (A good permanent anti-virus if you don't already have one)
Further information can be found in the [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]] article.

That happens if the server sends the file as text/plain.
You can see this if you open "Tools > Page Info > General": Content-Type: text/plain
Files send this way will always open in a tab.

My new tab page disappeared. How do i get it back? When i click on "new tab +", i get a search screen that looks similar to google search page.

this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware on your pc. please go to ''firefox > addons > extensions'' & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and do a scan of your system with [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].
[[Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page]]

afterwards install the search reset addon - it will revert the most common customizations those adware programs do in firefox back to the default: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchreset/

Install, update, and run these programs in this order. They are all free for personal use, but some have limited functionality in the "free mode" - but those are features you really don't need to find and remove the problem that you have. '''(Not all programs detect the same Malware.)'''

  • How do I set Firefox preferences to automatically open links in a new tab (just like Firefox3) ?

For example, when clicking on a link from a Google search, how can I have the link open automatically in a new tab as opposed to replacing the current page ?

Hey, cor-el -- long time no see! Hey, I have a problem, & my brain isn't working well enough to suss it out at the moment. :(
For some reason in the last week or so, links selected from either bookmarks or address bar no longer open automatically on selection, plus google search has disappeared from the nav toolbar . (Don't ask "what add-ons have you updated?" I don't know, & the add-on manager says I haven't done any recently.)
I checked about:config for browser.search.openintab; value is still set true. I toggled it false, restarted FF, then re-toggled true & another restart -- no joy. :(
I'm running 7.0.1 (release channel) on my work machine & the latest 8.x beta candidate at home; both exhibit the same behavior, so I'm assuming it's not a beta bug. What am I missing? I know it has to be something simple, but my brain refuses to compute. I know I could use safe mode & successively re-enable my add-ons, but I don't really have the time or mental clicks available.
I'm hoping it's something simple since I really don't have time to plod through everybloodydangthing for the one bad value that I'm sure is causing it. :/
    Regards & Happy Monday!

  • Why is it that sometimes when I use my middle mouse button to click on a link to open it in a new tab I will have it open it in an entirely new instance of Firefox instead of a new tab?

Occasionally when I click on a link with my middle mouse button, instead of opening the page in a new tab, it will open a new instance of Firefox.
I've looked through some of the settings and I wasn't able to find anything. It really gets to be bothersome at times because I prefer things to be in tabs instead of a new browser.

It's not specific sites. I can middle-click on the same link 50 times and it will open it in a new tab 45 times and 5 of those times, it will randomly open it in an entirely new window. I don't know what's causing this.
It happens so randomly that I don't know how to pin-point what it could be.

  • Opening link in a new tab disables back navigation to the first page

If I am on page A (for an example, let's say it is www.yahoo.com) and I chose a link on that page and by right-clicking open pop-up menu and choose '''Open Link in New Tab''', the page B (let's say finance.yahoo.com) opens in a new tab. Now, if I click on any link on this page B to be opened in the same tab the page (we will call it C) opens, but all options to navigate back ('''Go Back One Page''' browser button, Alt-Left Arrow, '''Back''' option on pop-up menu) appear disabled. However, if I continue to navigate from page C in the same tab to let's say page D, and from there to pages E and F, I can go back all the way to page C, but no further. It looks like for some reason the opening link in a new tab fails to put it in that tab navigation history.
I am running Firefox 4.01. It happens only on my office computer and not on any other computers I use. I had this problem before on the same office computer with Firefox 3.6. I could not get rid of it. Only after I uninstalled 3.6, cleaned all remnants of it and installed 4.0 – the problem went away. I updated to 4.01 and it worked fine for a while. But recently (I don't know what triggered it) the problem came back.

    Thanks for your post.
I've seen it, and that's what I want to avoid. Like I said, if I click on a link which was suppose to open in a new window, it should open in new tab instead.
    Thanks.

  • The mall grid button in the upper-right corner of the page that toggles the images on and off in a new tab is missing how do I get it back?

I had a problem with some malware/adware by the time I got it removed it had altered much of Firefox.
I have managed to correct everything apart from the thumb nails of frequently used sites on a new tab. I know there should be a 3 x 3 grid in the top right corner but it doesn't show. How do I get it back, please?

You can reset the <b>browser.newtab.url</b> via the right-click context menu to the default value (about:newtab) to get the new tab page with the thumbnails.

  • I email popup isn't working nor can I open pages on a new tab using right-click

I have AOL mail and I view my emails in a pop-up and now I click on the email and nothing happens- I cannot read them. When I am searching for videos or looking at content that is contained in a list I like to open links in a new tab so that I don't have to use the back button. When I right click a link the list is empty.

  • Will not open link to a new tab

When I right click on a link and tell it to open in a new tab it opens a new window instead..... this happens on every website except mozilla.com
I recently upgraded to FF 6.0 and I never had this problem with the prior version I was using...

You can't middle-click a JavaScript link to open that link in new tab without using an extension that supports that.
