Recently Played smart playist won't update

Normally, when I look at my Recently Played smart playlist, it shows songs that were played both on my computer and on my iPod (after I have synced it of course). I got a 5th generation Nano for Christmas, and ever since I have started using this iPod, the songs that I play on it no longer appear on my Recently Played smart playlist. I have searched this forum and tried everything people have suggested for similar problems (resetting the parameters of the smart playlist, etc.) and it's still not working.
I have the latest version of iTunes (since I know a lot of people were having problems when they upgraded) but I never had this problem with my old iPod nano. The reason this is so important to me is that I sync my Recently Played playlist with LastFM, and I also use it as the only playlist I have synced with my iPod (since I have too many songs to fit on it).
If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this I would really appreciate it because it is driving me crazy! Thank you so much

Are you manually managing the contents of the Nano (i.e. drag and drop) or do you auto-sync? If you manually manage the Nano you can still have a "Sync" button in iTunes, but clicking it won't sync play history from the iPod if it is in manual mode.
+(there is one exception to that -- if you auto-sync and then change to manual sync without removing the iPod contents, then clicking the Sync button in iTunes will continue to transfer play history and song rating changes from the iPod, even if it is in manual mode)+

  • Recently played Smart Playlist not working

I read here that this was a problem back in 2005, but I'm only encountering it now with the latest iTunes upgrade. I noticed today that my Recently Played smart playlist did not update for all the songs I played today. It shows only 1 song played today, which I think I played through the computer/iTunes. All of the songs played on my ipod today are not being recognized as "recently played". This is affecting the majority of my other smart playlists because they mostly work on a "least recently played" or "least often played" idea.
Is this happening to anyone else and does anyone have a fix?
    Thanks -

  • 10.2.1 Recently Played smart playlist (bug)

Like most users, I often skip around from song to song before the song is finished. These songs used to be added automatically to the "Recently Played" smart playlist (set to Last played in the last 30 days, live updating).
I have noticed since 10.2.1 update, that a song must be fully played before being added to said playlist.
It is very time consuming to scrub through the entire song of each song you play to get it added to the recently played smart playlist.
    Has anyone else noticed this?

  • Smart Playlists Won't Update

Since I updated to iTunes 6.0.3 I can no longer change the Date Added section of my Smart Playlists. So I tried creating a new Smart Playlist and it won't let me save a Date Range - no matter what I enter, it beeps when I close it and then when I check again the Date Added has reverted to Date Added is <today's date>.
Are other people having this problem? And if so, how do I get around it? Is it a bug in 6.0.3? Or is it just me?
(I know this sounds like a minor problem but I organize a lot of my music this way...)

    No problem on my system.
I suppose the format has to be the same as you have set in System Preferences>International>Formats.
    Can you check that?
    Hope this helps.

  • Plays on iPod won't update to iTunes library after 9.2 update

so i went on vacation for 2 weeks with my ipod and in that time watched 15 previously unwatched episodes of tv, 40 songs previously unplayed, as well as hundreds of others played, plus a few ratings changed. when i came home, i saw the 9.2 update was out and so i updated. afterwards, i plugged in my ipod. i waited past the beach ball effect and it all synced, but everything is the same, as if nothing was played on my ipod in those 2 weeks (according to my library). is there anything i can do to fix these? the only thing that transferred over to my library is an on-the-go playlist i made
ipod classic 6th generation 80g, macbook intel core duo from late 2007 but running on snow leopard

I did some more investigation and made an interesting observation. My track info did update as it should. The problem lies (for me at least) when viewing tracks in a SmartPlaylist. I made a 5 song smart playlist to see if I could figure out what was the problem. I also made a normal playlist and copied the songs from the smart playlist into the normal one. After I listened to the five songs (one of which I paused in, and one I skipped) all four of the ones I listened to updated in the normal playlist. I then looked at the smart playlist and all of the songs still showed their previous Last Played dates.
So, try looking at your 'un-updated' tracks outside of a smart playlist and see if they in fact, aren't updating.

  • Smart playlists won't update, remains empty even after weeks

Before I updated to the new iTunes, my smart playlists worked fine. My current version (11.0.3.) does not seem to add songs to or update any of the playlists I have created since downloading the new version. I have turned my itunes on and off several times and the version is up to date. I read this thread, posted by someone who had the same problem but his/her playlist automatically updated itself a few hours after it was created. Some of my smart playlists have remained empty for weeks. How do I solve this issue? It is driving me crazy.

One of them is a 1950s playlist in which the following rules apply:
    - Album title contains the word 1950
    - Year is in the range 1950 to 1959
The secon playlist is a compilation of remixes:
    - Artist name contains the word remix
    - Song title (name) contains the word remix
    - Album title contains the word remix
Are these Match Any or Match All?

  • Play Count/Ratings won't update.

For some reason neither the play counts nor the ratings will update if I do them on my Nano. If I play and/or rate a song on iTunes, the information will usually be saved.
This actually happened before early in the month, but the problem (temporarily) fixed itself. Now, information that was previously there (for example, I played some songs on iTunes on the 18th) has now reverted to earlier info. What gives? Is there any way of fixing this without resetting my iPod?
(Note: all other functions that deal with iTunes such as id3 info and album artwork, will update fine. It's just that any info I alter on the iPod itself will not save.)

So I formatted my iPod Nano, and it worked, but for some reason it stopped counting again. I briefly connected my iPod in order to load a song, and disconnected it properly. So does not charging it fully cause it to not save the data?

  • My ipod resets when a certain song plays and it won't update some videos

There is one song that no matter what when it plays it resets my ipod, black screen with the silver logo then main menu after like 30 seconds.
And I have a tv show on my iTunes but even though it shows its on my ipod I can't find it on there.
So is there a way to liek wipe my ipod clean reformat it and reupdate, and if so would that even fix my problems?

That song would appear to be corrupt. You should delete it from the iPod and transfer it back again.
If that doesn't work, try deleting it form iTunes then re importing it.
"even though it shows its on my ipod I can't find it on there."
    Huh?
You can wipe your iPod by restoring it.
See this: Restoring the 5th generation iPod (iPod with video).
That will also reinstall the software, but whether it will cure the issue no one can say.

  • 'Recently Played' playlist won't update after 2.0 upgrade

I purchased the 2.0.1 update in July. Prior to the update, I would go through play various songs, then later go to the 'Recently Played' playlist and listen to them again, shuffle, etc. Since the update, this playlist will not update at all. I must have played at least 25 different songs yesterday trying to get the playlist to update, I show one song in my 'Recently Played' playlist. Still having problem after 2.1 update a week or so ago. Anyone else having this issue?

I've tried these workarounds but they don't seem to work (on any current iPod.)
Lots of discussion regarding Smart Playlist synching on the iPhone here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1067876
...but none of the suggested workarounds seem to working for me.
There are two issues, it seems.
    1) synching the results of a smart playlist from iTunes to the iPod
    2) updating of smart playlists, on-the-fly, on the iPod itself
#1 is working for me. It's #2 I'm having no success with, and I'm wondering if Apple just abandoned the feature when it broke.
To reiterate. Leave the computer out of the equation for a moment. All I want is a "Recently Played" smart playlist that updates on-the-fly on the iPhone, no synching required. Is this not possible?
If not, that's a step backwards. It used to work on older iPods.

  • "Recently Played" playlist doesn't update on the iPod?

I know it used to work, on my old (3G?) iPod and some older firmware. Now it's broken.
All I want to be able to do is check my iPhone after a run, look on the device and see "what song played a couple of minutes ago?"
But the "Recently Played" playlist doesn't update on-the-fly like it used to. Instead, it's looking like I have to go back to my computer, and sync, in order to have the information sent back to the computer, and then the "Recently Played" playlist in iTunes shows what played on the iPod.
    But that stinks.
I want to see an accurate "Recently Played" on the iPod itself. Is that no longer possible? Is this a bug that we can hope Apple might address in the future... or is it a feature Apple's decided to abandon?

I've tried these workarounds but they don't seem to work (on any current iPod.)

  • My Recently Added playlist won't update when I buy a song on my iPhone

For some reason, my "Recently Added" smart playlist doesn't update when I buy a song on my iPhone 4. I have to Sync with iTunes for it to update. How can I get it back?

    1. Select your Smart Playlist
    2. Right Click and select "Edit Smart playlist"
    3. Add a new condition "Playlist IS Music" and make sure "Live Updating" is also checked. Press Ok
    4. Sync and it should work...

  • IPod "Recently Played" gets erased/overwritten by iTunes

I set up a "Recently Played" smart playlist on my iPod. It works. I listen to a track and that track gets listed on the smart playlist.
Then, when I connect the iPod to the computer, iTunes seems to make its own version of the smart playlist (btw - yes, the playlist is on the iPod itself - I'm not talking about iTunes' "Recently Played"). In iTunes, the iPod's Recently Played list shows a different set of tracks - those that were played from the iPod through iTunes.

There seems to be a problem with the Classic and new Nano where play history does not update your library. I would guess it is something that may be fixed with a firmware update ... someday.
The other consideration is the use of games seems to wipe out play history. Do you play any games on your iPod? I know on my 5G I lose play history if I've played more than about 50 songs or so and then play poker. But if I play only a few songs between syncs, then poker doesn't clear out the play history. This has been a problem since day 1 and has never been fixed.

  • Smart Playlist refusing to update

I've created and recreated multiple smart playlists for 'most recently added' however it won't update if I add new songs to my library. Live updating is enabled and I have the most recent itunes update. Any suggestions?

I am having the same issues, also new smart playlist which have only podcast are now showing up on my Iphone after syncing. On my Ipod there is an issue with the playlist showing 1 of 1 when there are 50 songs showing in the playlist? This all happened after updating to 9.1. Is apple aware? Does apple care?

  • Recently Played Playlist

    Hi,
I've recently installed itunes 8 and have noticed that my Recently Played playlist does not get updated while i listen to new songs but only when i synchronise the ipod to itunes. Before i installed itunes 8 everytime i listened to a new song my Recently played playlist would update the number of songs in the playlist.
However, recently this isnt happening. For example, my recently played playlist has 38 recently played songs. I then decide to play a song that isnt in that list but once i go to check if the playlist has updated and it hasnt.
The playlist only updates once i synchronise my iPod. I find this quite annoying as it never happened before.
    Help, PLEASE
