Recently purchased Airport Extreme

Recently purchased an Airport Extreme - (I have an iMAC 2009) hooked per the instructions when it was searching for the network it came up with "Unexpected Error Occurred"? not sure what to do next? Mike

What OS is your iMac running? What version of the airport utility?
You must use latest v6 utility with the new AE. The version v5 utility will not work.
You also need to use ipv6 set correctly to link local.. this is important.
Hidden deep down in the documents it tell you this.
AirPort base station not seen or "An unexpected error occurred" appears in AirPort Utility 6.3
The utility does not help you set local ipv6 settings or actually tell you the cause is your ipv6 is set wrongly.

  • TS4597 I am using an Airport Extreme as my base station and I want to extend its range using a recently purchased AirPort Express.  However neither device is showing up on my AirPort Utility on either my older MacBook Pro or my IPad 4.  What do I do?

I am using an older AirPort Extreme as my base station and I want to extend the range by using a recently purchased AirPort Express.  When I try to find either device using the AirPort Utilities function on either my new IPad 4 or my older MacBook Pro neither device is detected.  However the utility is seeing that we are connected to the Internet which is through the Extreme.   What am I doing wrong?

For now, leave the AirPort Express powered off.
Power off the entire network....all devices.....in any order that you want
    Wait a few minutes
Power up the modem first, and let it run 2-3 minutes by itself
Power up the AirPort Extreme next, and let it run a full minute
Keep powering up devices one at a time about a minute apart until everything is powered up (leave the Express off for now)
Open AirPort Utility and check to see if the AirPort Extreme is visible.
If it's not, click the AirPort Utility menu at the upper left of the screen, then click About AirPort Utility. Post back with the version number of AirPort Utility that you see there....which should be AirPort Utility 5.6.1.
    Post back on your progress.

  • Just purchased Airport Extreme ac and lost internet connection 3X. Reset to factory settings and worked for 2 days then lost connection and remedied by unplugging power supply. Anyone else having problems?

Just purchased Airport Extreme ac and lost internet connection 3X in less than one week. Fisrt time, reset to factory settings and fixed problem. Has occurred 2 additional times and connection re-established by unplugging AP extreme. Anyone else having these problems?  Do I have a bad router?  Thanks.

I definitely think this is a Mavericks issue.  My iMac running Mavericks is the ONLY system in the house that drops the network randomly while all other systems never lose the network.  No idea how to resolve this, but here is the workaround I'm posting:
I've had the 'network drop' issue with my Airport Extreme for the last 2 months.  It reconnects when I pull the ethernet cable and plug it back in.  I've tried downgrading the AE firmware, resetting to factory, etc.  Nothing worked.  I finally threw in the towel and created a script that monitors my network connectivity and restarts my interface if it senses it has dropped:
    #!/bin/ksh
    while true
    do
      yup=`ping -c1 -t2 www.google.com|grep from`
      if [[ -n $yup ]]
         then echo "Internet is connected!"
      else
ifconfig en0 down; ifconfig en0 up
            echo "Down at `date +%m%d%Y%H%M%S`">>./dropped.out
      fi
      sleep 5
    clear
    done
I know its a workaround, but its saving me the headache of constantly pulling my cable and putting it back in!
    Good luck!

  • Purchasing Airport Extreme Router

    Hello Everyone,
My Belkin router just died after three years and I need a new router, I am thinking of purchasing the Airport Extreme and was wondering if it is a good router. The router is a bit expensive at $180 and I want to make sure that this is a good buy. Apple products have not let me down and I recently just purchased a Macbook about 3 months ago. My belkin router worked great for 3 years, so I am trying to decide on which router is better. I tried Linksys and D-Link and I didn't have good experiances with ether. Please help me choose what is the better router.
    Thank you in advance.

Well, if you want something that is works well and is pretty much plug and play then the AirPort Extreme is a good purchase. It works really well with an external hard drive for Time Machine backups.
It is very user friendly but doesn't have some of the advanced options that other routers have (even though some of those other routers are cheaper). If you are planning on running just Macs or plan on adding other Apple wireless routers later (i.e. Time Capsule, AirPort Express, another Extreme) at a later time then I would suggest the AirPort Extreme. If you are running mixed Apple and PC products or need a product that has more advanced features it may be better to go with a non-Apple router.

  • Just purchased airport extreme what cable do i need to start the process, is it a double ended male usb cable because there is no cat-5 connector on macbook air?

Hi,  which type cable do I need to start a hard wire connection between my Airport extreme and my macbook Air, is it a double ended male USB
because there is no cat-5 port in the notebook

If you want to connect the AirPort Extreme to the MacBook Air via Ethernet, you'll need one of these (requires a late 2010 MacBook Air or later and OS X Lion (10.7.4) or later): http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD463ZM/A/thunderbolt-to-gigabit-ethernet-adap ter

  • Recently bought airport Extreme and have connected the device to the modem. WIFI works. However when I connect the LAN port to a switch I do not see the LAN printer and my NAS. Which setting do I miss?

I have installed my Airport Extreme and have conencted it directly to a modem. WIFI works fine. However I do not see my LAN network (printer. NAS,..).
    Analysis:
Scen#1: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a switch (as input) and connect the other LAN devices also to the switch, those LAN devices do not have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the Airport Extreme I cannot find my LAN printer and other devices.
Scen#2: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a router X (as input) and connect the router X to the same switch, and the LAN devices to the switch, those LAN devices do have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the router X I can find my LAN printer and other devices in the LAN network.
Question what has impacted the behaviour of the Airport Extreme, not to detect the devices in the LAN network. Why is the use of a switch directly behind the Airport Extreme not working (no internet access for the other devices and Airport Extreme is not the basis station for the LAN network)?

Your scenario #1 is a correct configuration and should work. It seems as though your Extreme is not acting as a router as I believe you intend.
Most likely, you need to reset your modem. Power it down and let it rest for a few moments. Some need longer than others. Then, I recommend you "hard reset" your Extreme (see below) and configure it again, after the modem has been reset. From then on do not change what is connected to your modem without powering it down first.
Once configured, confirm your Extreme's wireless network works as expected and that your iPad and every other wireless device can load web pages. Then, connect the printer directly to one of the Extreme's LAN ports and confirm that it works as well. After that it should work equally well with a switch between it and the Extreme, as should every other wired device connected to the switch. This assumes your switch is an unmanaged device requiring no specific configuration.
Scenario #2: Having a router connected downstream of another is not a normal configuration, so don't pursue that as a solution. It will only distract you from determining the problem. If you want to repurpose Router X as another device do so only after everything else is working to your satisfaction.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.

  • Airport Extreme - Worked excellent x 1 week, now it's very very slow - no idea why or where to start evaluating it

So I recently purchased Airport Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi...
I have it set up to provide wireless for my laptop, Ipad2, AppleTV, and a printer...I'm in a small apartment and the wireless router is at the same desk as the laptop (which is usually used as a desktop style) so it has full bars.
When it first set it all up, it was blazingly fast...and absolutely no problems. Then over the past few days, it has slowed tremendously and the only way to get full speed is to connect the ethernet cord directly to the laptop. When I try to switch back to the router Wi-Fi it slows to a crawl (we are talking dial-up modem 1990's in loading a picture)....When I switch it back to a direct connection it then downloads with no problems.
I was reviewing older forum stuff but a lot of the terminology is over my head.
    Security is WAP2 personal
I have 2 channels which it says are Automatic (6, 159)
Looks like I have 5Ghz/2.4Ghz Airport IDs...
    It's uptodate with version 7.6
It says I have 3 wireless clients - Is this the printer, Ipad2, and Apple TV? Or is it possible someone else is on my secure network?
I just don't know where to start to figure out what's going on. I also have a wireless keyboard and mouse by logitech - could this be interfering? Unsure but I have those two next to each other but that shouldn't be affecting it after a week of it working perfect, should it?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

It's possible that the Airport card has issues (I had mine replaced on my older MBP a couple of years ago).  I would run a Hardware Test to see if that develops anything.  If not I would take it to the Apple store Genius bar.

  • Help with connecting Dell laptop Wifi using new airport extreme

I recently purchased airport extreme. I am having problems setting up my wifi on my Dell laptop. It was working fine with my previous router.
My ITouch and IPad connect fine with WiFi. what do I need to do with the laptop? I've tried everything I can figure out, but no luck.

you should ask in the airport forum rather then the imac forum where nobody are sure to own airports

  • Airport extreme will not fix problems or allow manual settings

So I have a recently purchased airport extreme and the dreaded "flashing amber light" problem, but I can't find a solution that works. When I open my airport utility it says it has found an airport extreme that is experiencing problems, and then gives all the specs of my airport extreme (e.g. name, ip address, etc.) and says it is reporting problems.
It then instructs me to press the continue button to resolve the problems. However, when I do that (or attempt to open the manual settings), it thinks and thinks and thinks while reading the configuration and then finally tells me that an error occurred while reading my configuration and I should make sure the airport is properly plugged in and in range of my computer, though it's plugged in properly and sitting immediately next to the computer.
I would also note that the internet works fine on my desktop (being run through the airport to my mac), but just will not work on the danged airport.
Any idea of what I can do now?

It opens up a new window, but still gives me the exact same error message about not being plugged in or in range, though it is both of those

  • Chaning a setting on Airport Extreme/Time Capsule?

I recently purchased Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule. Time Capsule part is working fine. My internet connection is working fine too. However when I was going thru the setup, instead of marking "Ethernet" for the wireless router, I marked it PPPoE. I have a DSL modem already connected via PPOE and so I suppose there was a conflict between the Airport router (connected via Ethernet cable to the DSL modem) and it wouldn't connect. However, about ten seconds later, it said I got a message saying the connection was resolved. And I was connected. Only afterward did it dawn on me that I should have set the wireless router as Ethernet. The only 'problem' I have with this set up is that I cannot see the DSL modem by entering its IP address on Safari. It just spins. I called Apple support and the guy I talked to told me that if it was working, just leave it be. He wasn't sure what would happen if I changed the wireless router (through the Airport Utility) to Ethernet. But I'm still stuck with the issue of not being able to address my DSL modem if I need to say, change my Internet logon password, which I do infrequently. He didn't know (nor do I) know what was done that caused the iMAC with Leopard 10.5.7 to resolve the issue instead of just not connecting and making me discover my error of entering the PPPoE into the router's settings. I can use the Airport Utility and change the PPPoE to Ethernet but will this cause a problem now that it's working OK. I'm not sure I understand fully whether the router should be the 'connection device' or just a bridge. I don't like the idea of not being able to IP address my DSL modem because the next time I change my password, I will probably have to call my ISP (SBC DSL) to see if they can help and sometimes the do and sometimes they don't. Any suggestions here or is it possible that I can just reset the Airport wireless router to Ethernet and it will not cause any problems. I have two other Macs on my home network just FYI. This Time Capsule is 500GB and like I said, the backups are working as they are suppose to so the question is only with the wireless router. This seems to be a pretty slick product and I've had no problems with the wireless functionality either. I am almost 70 years old and have only had a iMAC since December 2007. Prior to this router, we used a Linksys, Ethernet cable for about 10 years.

If your modem is just that a DSL modem it is unlikely it has a built in PPPoE client. If your dsl modem is a modem/router then it will have a built in PPPoE client. This is usually the case of 99% of modems.
What is the make and model of your dsl modem?
If your DSL modem has an integrated PPPoE client then you need to setup your TimeCapsule as a wireless access point only. So in your aiport utitlity goto the internet tab and on the 'connection sharing' drop down choose 'Off bridged mode'
    Then update the settings.
If your modem does not have a PPPoE client then let your TimeCapsule be the PPPoE client. However in order to connect to the WebUI of your modem you would need to connect directly to it with an ethernet cable not going through your time capsule.
But to be sure what kind

  • Wireless modem and airport extreme

Hi. I recently bought airport extreme with the intention of using it to provide wireless access to my external hard drive and printer.
I have a netcomm nb5plus4w modem router which is connected to my broadband and currently provides wireless internet to our laptop.
I am wanting to connect the airport extreme to this current network wirelessly. Is this possible, or will I need to purchase an ethernet cable to connect my modem to the airport extreme??
I just attempted to connect it, and then had all sorts of trouble getting my modem back running with my isp.
Please use as simple language as possible. While I am the techno chick in my marriage, I am by no means proficient in the gobbledeygook language!!!!
    Cheers.
i hope I have given enough info.

I am wanting to connect the airport extreme to this current network wirelessly. Is this possible, or will I need to purchase an ethernet cable to connect my modem to the airport extreme??
Sorry, but unlike the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) or the Time Capsule (TC), you will not be able to "join" an existing wireless network with the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) wirelessly to share USB drives/printers.
Since the router you are trying to connect to is not another AirPort, you will have to connect the two (as you suggested) with an Ethernet cable for sharing.

  • Airport Extreme keep disappearing from airport utility

    Hello,
I have purchased recently an Airport Extreme and set it up as such:
    - wired connection to my ADSL modem
    - connected a 1TB drive by USB to the airport extreme
On top of this, I have an airport express that I use exclusively for itunes streaming to my stereo
Devices connecting to the Airport extreme are:
    - one Windows XP PC (wired)
    - iPhone, Ipad, Macbook Pro, all wireless
All firmware and airport utility versions are up to date.
First it works. All is connected, green lights, extreme and express detected by utility, USB drive visible everywhere. Then after a few hours, the following happens:
    - extreme and express are not visible by utility on mac book pro (but still detected by utility on iPhone!)
    - cannot stream music to express
    - USB drive no longer visible from my Macbook pro
    - shared itunes library no longer available
    - green lights still on
    - internet still on
The only way to fix it is to reboot the extreme.
    Any ideas ?

I'm sorry to say that I've had this exact same problem.  It's very frustrating because I lose the ability to stream to appletv and also to use wireless printing... the two main reasons I bought an Airport Extreme and got rid of my old router.
I will continue to have connectivity to the WAN but the airport utility on my MBP can't see any available airport devices. I thought it might be an issue with my OS, so I upgraded to Lion, but no change...
I've spent time searching the forums without success. I've also posted it to twitter. Hopefully, someone can help us? I'm wondering if the router hardware is bad or if it's a wireless driver issue with my MBP.

  • Airport Extreme and Express - connecting both via Powerline?

    Hi
Recently moved to Virgin and now have a Superhub 2 Modem/Router.  However, still want to use my existing Airport Extreme (4th Gen) and recently purchased Airport Express (2nd Gen).
I can put the Superhub 2 into Modem only mode so the Airport Extreme is only router.  I currently extend the network around the house with the Airport Express.
Is there anyway I can connect the Extreme to the Express via a Netgear Powerline?  If so, will this work with both 2.4 and 5.0 networks.
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

Is there anyway I can connect the Extreme to the Express via a Netgear Powerline?  If so, will this work with both 2.4 and 5.0 networks.
Yes on both. Note however, when interconnected by Powerline adapters, it would be the same as though they were connected by Ethernet. The type of extended network would not be an "extended" network but a "roaming" one. Both basically do the same thing.

  • New AirPort Extreme will not connect to internet

Purchased AirPort Extreme to replace older D Link 655 router. All of my Apple gear has been plug and play except this
Extreme router.  I cannot get an internet connection to save my soul.  I tried connecting thru both my MacBook Pro and my HP Pavilion dv6.  I just assumed I could move the ethernet cord from the DIR-655 to the AirPort and all would be fine.  Not so.  I have reset, unplugged and restarted so many times I lost count.  Nothing works.  What am I doing wrong.  I even swapped out at store where I bought thinking I had defective router.  any ideas?  My wife works from home and I really need a better router with greater reach and thought this was it.  Please help.

Simply restarting the modem will not always allow it to reset correctly so that it will issue a new valid IP address to the AirPort Extreme.
Power off the cable modem completely for at least 30 minutes....longer will not hurt. Be sure to unplug the power cord from the back of the modem or unplug the power cord at the AC wall jack. If the modem has an easily accessible battery, pull the battery.
Power off the AirPort Extreme as well.
After the modem power down period, insure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is connected to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme. Reinstall the modem battery if it was installed previously.
Power up the modem and let it run for 10 minutes by itself.
Then power up the AirPort Extreme and let it run for a few minutes. Check to see if the Internet connection is working correctly now.

  • We use an Airport Extreme in my office, which works fine for me. Occasionally we need to have more than one computer running on it, but for some reason it won't connect to the internet. It says we have internet, but won't connect to wifi. What's going on?

I use my computer everyday in our office and have no issue connecting to the internet/wifi, but when my boss comes in and tries to connect it doesn't work. It tells her she has internet, but won't connect to the wifi. We've tried a few different tactics(the basic ones I've seen on here), but nothing seems to be working for us. My computer automatically connects to our wifi.
Just recently the Airport Extreme has started with the blinking amber colored light on the front, which I believe means something is wrong? Can anyone help us figure out what's going on and why we can't get my boss' computer to connect as it should?
    Thank you!

    Here's an update:
Now the light is not blinking. It's a solid, consistant green. I don't know if it helps to narrow it down or anything, but I just figured I'd mention it.
