Recently switched to Mac, LOVE IT! Not going back

Hello
A few weeks ago, I made the decision to purchase a new white MacBook 2.0GHz to replace my 8 month old Dell Latitude D620. I work in the IT Industry, and am around computers and technology all day, and had grown tired of Windows XP on my home computer. I had upgraded to Windows Vista, but found it too unstable for productive use. Most of the issues were related to Dell drivers and will most likely be resolved soon enough, but I was needing something new then. You all know that feeling, just can't wait and need a new toy! So I went in to the Apple Store and walked out with a new MacBook.
I must say that I am extremely happy with my purchase and feel that I am now a Mac user for life for my personal computer needs. Not being very familiar with the OSX interface, I expected my transition time to be longer. But OSX just seems to make sense, in a way Windows could only dream of.
Not to beat a dead horse, as I know most people on this forum are going to understand everything I'm saying anyway, but I just wanted to preach to the choir for a moment and say how much I love the MacBook, and Apple products in general. I am anxiously awaiting the availability of the iPhone as well!
Thanks to everyone for a great forum, and for convincing one more user to switch!
Cheers
Josh

Welcome....
I switched 2 years ago and now use a Macbook everyday at work. It is really amusing to watch my colleagues each time they say 'see this in vista'....you mean like this feature I had 18 months ago when Tiger came out
Have a look at Dave and Entourage. Dave lets you integrate to Windows 2003 server network and Entourage is so much better than outlook. I run Citrix ICA for my other needs while in the office such as our Helpdesk software and main applications.
I can not see me going back now...so much so that my PDA is now a Newton, wow is that a piece of technology that was way ahead of its time. The most impressive thing is taking notes in a meeting then Bluetoothing them to my Macbook and emailing to my colleagues ---- LOL.
Welcome to another switcher.....

    iPhone warranty is not international, but is valid only in
    the country of original purchase. Since you bought the iPhone
    in the UK, your warranty is valid anywhere in the EU but not
    in Egypt. You can gry taking it to an Apple authorized reseller,
    but don't be surprised if they tell you they cannot do anything.

  • My iMessage will not come on. I hit the switch to on and it automatically goes back to off. Help!

    Every time I try to turn on my iMessage it will not come on. I toggle the switch from off to on and it automatically goes back to off. I've made sure that there are no restrictions on and every other thing I could think of, but still to no avail. Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be?

        Thanks for your efforts, jcma323. I'm going to send you a Direct Message. We'll get to the bottom of this.

  • FXO port not going back onhook when call goes to CUC Voice mail.

    HI All,
    Quiet new to the voice world and have just set up a home lab and have run into the following problem.
    When a call comes in from the PSTN and gets transferred to voicemail CUC, when the caller has left the message and hung up the FXO port on my Cisco 3825 does not go back on hook
    If a call comes in from the PSTN and is answered on a phone registered to the CUCM and the internal user hangs up the FXO port goes back on hook but if the caller hangs up the FXO port does not go back on hook.
    I am using H.323 between the 3825 & CUCM
    PSTN ------->Voice Gateway 3825-------->CUCM-------->CUC
    Anyone got any ideas as to why this is happening?
    Thanks

    Hi Shaun,
    The router DSP port is not able to detect the disconnect tone sent by provider that is why FXO port is remaining off hook. When call is answered by IP phone then IP phone user can listen the disconnect tone when PSTN caller disconnectes the call and they will hang up the call so gateway is aware that call is disconnected and moves the port to ON hook state but CUE cannot understand the tone so it keeps the call active. To resolve the issue we ave to configure custom CPTONE. Kindly collect PCM capture for a test call. Disable capture after call is disconnected by PSTN caller. i have attached the document. Use the method according to your IOS version.
    Using PCM capture we can findout the exact frequency and cadence of the disconnect tone sent by provider.

  • Recently switched to Mac...Mighty Mouse or Wireless Mouse??

    After being a PC user for 15 years, I recently bought my first Mac...a black Macbook. I try to avoid using the trackpad unless I need to and I'm going to purchase an Apple mouse. My question for you guys, since I'm a noob, would you recommend an Apple Wireless Mouse or Mighty Mouse for use with my Macbook?
    [I'm currently using a Logitech MX1000 Laser with my PC and I love it!]
    Thanks for the help, I frequent these forums everydays. You guys are an invaluable resource for a new switcher!
    Black Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Dell Latitude D800

    The Mighty Mouse gives you several options that you set in System Preferences.
    - Single-button clicking, like traditional Mac mice;
    - Left and right clicking, like on Windows machines;
    - Center clicking (you press on the scroll wheel itself);
    - Side "squeeze" click;
    Most or all of these can be configured independently of one another.
    The wireless mouse also has no scroll wheel.
    Note, however, that there is not nearly as much need to right-click on a Mac. A right-click brings up a contextual menu, which generally provides a handful of useful commands, which vary with the application. But virtually all contextual-menu commands are available via the traditional menus.
    (To try out contextual menus, hold the Ctrl key while clicking. This simulates a right-click on a single-button mouse.)

  • Recently switched from Mac to WinXP-- now iPod doesn't show up at all!

    As the subject says, I recently reset my iPod (the old black one with video) from my Mac to my Windows XP. I restored the iPod so that it would work on the Windows computer, and I let it sync, since I've got a good amount of songs. As I was syncing, I was also downloading Podcasts. Well, I ended up needing one of the ports to hook up my printer, and removed the port which connects to the internet. iTunes froze for a moment, and I quickly replaced the internet plug. iTunes told me that it could not locate the folder for my iPod, and the icon for my iPod disappeared. I unplugged the iPod from the computer and plugged it back in, but my computer doesn't even recognize that something is being plugged in. I've tried it in different ports but it won't show up at all.

    Page 55 ipod manual:
    "The 5 Rs: Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall, Restore
    Remember these five basic suggestions if you have a problem with iPod. Try these
    steps one at a time until your issue is resolved. If one of the following doesn’t help,
    read on for solutions to specific problems.
    Reset iPod. See “General Suggestions,” below.
    Retry with a different USB port if you cannot see iPod in iTunes.
    Restart your computer, and make sure you have the latest software updates
    installed.
    Reinstall iTunes software from the latest version on the web.
    Restore iPod. See “Updating and Restoring iPod Software” on page 61."

  • Mac book pro not going to sleep

    mac book pro when put to sleep, the monitor turns off, but the light does not indicate sleep mode, I can hear the motor running and it is warm, indicating it is not sleeping.  It is an early 08 mac book pro, running Lion, completely updated.
    Anyone aware of this issue?  Apprectiate any insight.
    Thanks
    JT

    Are you **** closing the lid to put it tp sleep? It might be operating in clamshell mode for some reason. Try the drop down menu for the Apple and click sleep, or option, command ,eject.
    You can check your login items under accounts, and get rid of all those, by highlighting and using the - sign, it could also be a bluetooth item tha is keeping your mac from sleeping, a phone headset, mouse, etc. If it is a blurtooth yhing turn off blurtoth till you need it.

  • Once you switch to Aperture, is there no going back?

    Since Aperture uses stores all data in a proprietary database that is not accessible by any other program, I'm a little worried about committing to it fully. As much as I like the features, I'm reticent to throw the management of my 8 gig photo library to Aperture knowing full well that if I change my mind in the future and want to revert back to having a simple folder structure full of JPGs organized by date, I cannot do that. Aperture's Export function is really simplistic, meant only for single or small batches of images. You cannot export your entire library into hierarchical folders based on projects/albums. I pretty much understand why Aperture has to store the data in a place where users can't access it, but I think the option to export library entirely or partially—complete with hierarchical structure and metadata—should definitely be an option. Does anyone else feel the same reticence I do?

    1 You can export the RAW and versions and all your
    other photos at any time.
    Aperture is supposed to SIMPLIFY Raw workflow, not create more obstacles. At least that's what their marketing materials all stated it would do.
    By keeping the files stored in a "package" you aren't
    tempted to move the files and break the connections to
    the "delta" information. The way it works I can
    undersatnd why the do it the way they do it.
    This issue has been addressed many times by me and others, but I'll explain once again why this argument is specious. First of all, professionals are going to write protect the master Raw folder if they are that worried about it. And they can control people's ability to add to it but not delete from it really easy on a file server.
    Secondly, Apple stores Raw images in a package. This is the same thing as an exposed folder except they create a subfolder per Raw image -- you know, just to make sure it's a pain in the arse for you to back out of Aperture. I guess it's like the mafia -- once you're in, you're in for life.
    Anyhow, because they store them essentially as a folder, they're not protecting anyone from anything. Quite the opposite, in fact because now my Windows machines and other Macs on the network must browse folders to get at the Raw files (since only one user can have the master database and that user must be on a Mac). What are the chances someone will edit a file right there on the network drive now? Much higher in my experience.
    The reason this is so frustrating is because it was completely and utterly unnecessary. Apple went out of their way, spending a lot of extra development dollars to build a product with restrictions so draconian as to limit the number of professional photographers who can purchase it. That's an unsound business decision, period.

  • Why is the cursor not allowing me to use clip art.  It's just continually spinning and is not going back to normal.

    microsoft office word/powerpoint is not responding, the cursor just keeps on going round and round, i cannot exit it.

    What is your iPhoto version?
    For Photo Stream you will need at least iPhoto 9.2.1 for compatability with iCloud. Are you still running iPhoto 8?

    Anyways... The Dock, where all the applications are on the bottom of my macbook remain there. they wont slide back down out of view. how can i change this? i've been searching and cant find the answer.

    You can also use the shortcut Apple has assigned to the "Automatically hide and show the Dock" command: ⌘⌥D (command or "Apple" key, option or alt key, then the letter D).
    Hope this helps.

    There are part of the verification check i.e. is the card valid and active and can accept charges. They should disappear of your card within a day or two. Don't know why it was done twice, unless it was just because it was two different machines

  • Mac Book Pro immediately goes back to sleep after waking under Lion

    The sleep problem I am having seems to be in the minority, so I thought I would get it  (and the resolution) up here for others. I have a 2011 17" MBP.
    The laptop wakes up as normal, and the display is active for 1.5 to 2 seconds before it shuts off again.During that time, the keyboard appears to be active, but even if you sucessfully log in, it will still continue to blink.
    The trick that seems to work is to unplug the machine before waking it up. Under battery, the machine wakes up properly and you can plug it in again afterwards with out issue.

    Would you create a new user account. Log into this account. Does the problem persist? If so, then navigate to the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder. Remove the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file. Restart the computer and reconfigure your Energy Saver preferences for both Power and Battery. Also, reset the SMC: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC). Test to see if this fixes the problem.

    Well try upgrading the firmware of the router & keep on holding tightly the reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!!
    Open the setup page of router using 192.168.1.1 then put in the password as admin...all you need to do is do the wireless settings such as Radio Band Frequency to Standard 20 MHZ frequency,channel to 11.
    Also,the advanced wireless settings to Beacon Interval=50,Frag
    thres=2306 & Rts thres=2307 & then uncheck a Block Anonymous Internet
    Requests & it will definately work!!!
