Recently switched to Mac...Mighty Mouse or Wireless Mouse??

After being a PC user for 15 years, I recently bought my first Mac...a black Macbook. I try to avoid using the trackpad unless I need to and I'm going to purchase an Apple mouse. My question for you guys, since I'm a noob, would you recommend an Apple Wireless Mouse or Mighty Mouse for use with my Macbook?
[I'm currently using a Logitech MX1000 Laser with my PC and I love it!]
Thanks for the help, I frequent these forums everydays. You guys are an invaluable resource for a new switcher!

The Mighty Mouse gives you several options that you set in System Preferences.
- Single-button clicking, like traditional Mac mice;
- Left and right clicking, like on Windows machines;
- Center clicking (you press on the scroll wheel itself);
- Side "squeeze" click;
Most or all of these can be configured independently of one another.
The wireless mouse also has no scroll wheel.
Note, however, that there is not nearly as much need to right-click on a Mac. A right-click brings up a contextual menu, which generally provides a handful of useful commands, which vary with the application. But virtually all contextual-menu commands are available via the traditional menus.
(To try out contextual menus, hold the Ctrl key while clicking. This simulates a right-click on a single-button mouse.)

  • App switching problem with Mighty Mouse

Looks like a bug in the Event manager. From the Finder, right-clic (Migghty Mouse) on an Application window that provide contextual menu. The Windows get the focus, but you can't close, minimize or maximize it anymore. You'll have to switch to the finder and back to the application for things to get back to normal

    Hi John,
    OK, one little example :
In the Finder (10.4.6) with Safari Download window in the background.
Right-clic on Safari Downloads -> Safari Ctxt menu.
Left clic in the same window to dismiss menu
At that time, if you clic on a download item, it will become Grey instead of Blue (my hilighting settings). Commands Shortcuts won't work. You can clic again on the window with no results. But Safari is in front since its menus are displayed. You'll have to clic on the Finder and back in Safari to get focus working.
Looks like Safari came to front but didn't gain focus...
Of course, and for me at least, it "works" the same with many applications.

  • Recently switched to Mac, LOVE IT! Not going back

    Hello
A few weeks ago, I made the decision to purchase a new white MacBook 2.0GHz to replace my 8 month old Dell Latitude D620. I work in the IT Industry, and am around computers and technology all day, and had grown tired of Windows XP on my home computer. I had upgraded to Windows Vista, but found it too unstable for productive use. Most of the issues were related to Dell drivers and will most likely be resolved soon enough, but I was needing something new then. You all know that feeling, just can't wait and need a new toy! So I went in to the Apple Store and walked out with a new MacBook.
I must say that I am extremely happy with my purchase and feel that I am now a Mac user for life for my personal computer needs. Not being very familiar with the OSX interface, I expected my transition time to be longer. But OSX just seems to make sense, in a way Windows could only dream of.
Not to beat a dead horse, as I know most people on this forum are going to understand everything I'm saying anyway, but I just wanted to preach to the choir for a moment and say how much I love the MacBook, and Apple products in general. I am anxiously awaiting the availability of the iPhone as well!
Thanks to everyone for a great forum, and for convincing one more user to switch!
    Cheers
    Josh

    Welcome....
I switched 2 years ago and now use a Macbook everyday at work. It is really amusing to watch my colleagues each time they say 'see this in vista'....you mean like this feature I had 18 months ago when Tiger came out
Have a look at Dave and Entourage. Dave lets you integrate to Windows 2003 server network and Entourage is so much better than outlook. I run Citrix ICA for my other needs while in the office such as our Helpdesk software and main applications.
I can not see me going back now...so much so that my PDA is now a Newton, wow is that a piece of technology that was way ahead of its time. The most impressive thing is taking notes in a meeting then Bluetoothing them to my Macbook and emailing to my colleagues ---- LOL.
    Welcome to another switcher.....

  • Recently switched from Mac to WinXP-- now iPod doesn't show up at all!

As the subject says, I recently reset my iPod (the old black one with video) from my Mac to my Windows XP. I restored the iPod so that it would work on the Windows computer, and I let it sync, since I've got a good amount of songs. As I was syncing, I was also downloading Podcasts. Well, I ended up needing one of the ports to hook up my printer, and removed the port which connects to the internet. iTunes froze for a moment, and I quickly replaced the internet plug. iTunes told me that it could not locate the folder for my iPod, and the icon for my iPod disappeared. I unplugged the iPod from the computer and plugged it back in, but my computer doesn't even recognize that something is being plugged in. I've tried it in different ports but it won't show up at all.

    Page 55 ipod manual:
"The 5 Rs: Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall, Restore
Remember these five basic suggestions if you have a problem with iPod. Try these
steps one at a time until your issue is resolved. If one of the following doesn’t help,
read on for solutions to specific problems.
Reset iPod. See “General Suggestions,” below.
Retry with a different USB port if you cannot see iPod in iTunes.
Restart your computer, and make sure you have the latest software updates
    installed.
Reinstall iTunes software from the latest version on the web.
Restore iPod. See “Updating and Restoring iPod Software” on page 61."

  • Install disk 1 + wireless mighty mouse

when i re-boot using install disk 1 the process comes to a stop when it comes to the graphic showing how to put the batteries in and switch on the mighty mouse, there is just the spinning disk at the bottom of the screen.after alot of trial and error i discovered that plugging in a usb mouse makes the process carry on as normal.also i discovered that clicking repeatedly the mouse button
sometimes makes it carry on but not always.I usually have to revert to plugging in a usb mouse.I have tried the hardware test with "no trouble found" also the extended test is ok.The mouse works normally otherwise except maybe the tracking speed could be faster.I have it at max and i could do with another notch or two but thats another story. Also the range seems ok.it works normally up to 25 ft.Do you guys have the same behaviour as i do?
    macpro 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

did not solve the problem with the install disk. But if you are referring to the speed of the mighty mouse i tried "steermouse" and that solves the speed issue. Lets hope apple solves this one in the next update

  • Mighty Mouse problems - dead click

Recently purchased a Apple Mighty Mouse. Works fine until the click is no longer read by the computer. Usually when switching apps. The cursor moves fine and it causes the dock to appear and react correcly when moved over it but nothing can be clicked or activated.
Even if I have another input source plugged in (Wacom, trackball) these no longer react to clicks eaither. Most of the time I'm running without them.
The keyboard also seems to be in-active at that time.
Is this a known problem or conflict of some type? The only solution seems to a full power reset since the I can't bring up force quit with keyboard.
    Thanks.

    Hi Scott
I bought a mighty mouse shortly after they were released and I found after a while, that if I used Button 4 [the squeeze button on the side] as the Application switcher then the left and right click wouldn't be recognised until the computer was restarted.
The only soultion I have is to not use Button 4 for anything and stick to Command & Tab for using Application Switcher.
    Hope this helps

  • Mac Mini and Bluetooth Recent Problems (Mighty Mouse, Wireless Keyboard)

    Hello there,
I have an issue with my Mac Mini.
We had a storm here recently, so I switched my Mac off. After that, I turned it on, but to my surprise my Wireless Mighty Mouse and Wireless Keybord do not function any more. The green dot under the mouse nad keyboard flashes for a few seconds and turns off. I tried to plug my regular mouse and keyboard but it seems the do not work too. Any solutions?

i dont know if you have another mac around but have you tried repairing the disk by putting it into Target disk mode and hooking up another mac to it? if nothing else, try putting the install CD/DVD and boot from there by holding down "c" as it boots. if that works then it may just be a bad BT card. if it doesnt work then you may have bad usb ports. i hope you have applecare!
a tip for bluetooth HIDs, spread them apart. you will experience problems on occasion where their signals get crossed and they fail to sync right.
by the way, if you went the extra mile to turn off your mac because you were concerned about it, then why didnt you just unplug it from the outlet?

  • Odd Wireless Mighty Mouse  behavior with new Mac Pro?

    Hi,
I have a brand new Mac pro and Wireless Apple Mighty Mouse & Keyboard.
The mouse however is not operating properly, it is jerky and slow to respond on a intermittent regular basis. I can move the cursor around the screen but it will stutter and jerk slowly then pick up ok?
I had the mouse and keyboard with my iMac and it worked fine. I have run all updates and re-installed but to no avail. The keyboard is fine.
I suspect it's a hardware issue with my new mac Pro but i'd love it if someone has any other possible causes.
    Thanks.

Hi, there's a quite a few people with similar problems, including myself.
My keyboard likes to drop it's connection for no apparent reason, which in turn likes to mess up my mouse and cause it to stutter for a while. Pairing up new devices can do this too, I've found.
It's been thought that some Mac Pro's came with their WiFi and BT wires incorrectly fitted, if you have a search you should find a link to the tutorial if you want to try switching them around.
That said, it didn't make any difference to my BT keyboard and wireless Mighty Mouse, so I switched them back.
I've been hoping for a software fix, but no joy so far, glad I got a three year warranty as standard.

  • Wireless Mighty Mouse Sputters During Network activity

Has anyone figured this one out yet.
I have a wireless mighty mouse that when you copy files to or from a computer off a network,
it sputters and barely moves when trying to use it. If i plug in a usb mouse there is no problem at all.
Was using a verizon wireless router and just bought an airport extreme. Guess what. Still does it. When I hard wire my computer to the router all works fine.
I just cant think of what this could possibly be. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

There are a lot of people with this problem - mostly MacBook owners, but probably because they're more likely to have the wireless and BlueTooth running.
I have the problem with a Logitech mouse on a Mac Mini -- cursor goes bonkers at random intervals, with terrible mouse lag, and I basically can't use the mouse when it's happening. It doesn't correlate with anything I can see in the Activity Monitor, but I can stop it if I turn off BOTH Airport and the router.
Not likely to be RF interference with the signals, IMO, but some have reported that switching to an 802.11n router (or 802.11g with b compatibility disabled) solved the problem.

  • Wireless Mighty Mouse unresponsive during Bluetooth connection to K800i

Whenever I use Bluetooth to sync my Sony Ericsson K800i with my Mac, I notice that my Wireless Mighty Mouse sometimes becomes slow and unresponsive. I have to switch the mouse off and on again, after switching off Bluetooth on the phone, for the mouse to go back to normal.
I am using a third-party plugin to provide iSync support for this phone, but I don't know if that would make a difference. I never had this issue with my K750i.
Any suggestions would be very welcome!
    iMac Core 2 Duo 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The combo update rolls up all the patches Apple has released since 10.5 hit the shelves into one monster download; so you don't need to have installed 10.5.3 to install 10.5.4 - you can go from any version. Some users swear that applying the combo update makes for a more reliable Mac, and it fixed my Mac problem.
But beware the combo is over 1/2 Gb in size and will take a good while to download, even on a DSL connection. You can find it on the Apple downloads page at:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/
There are separate versions for the regular version of MacOS X and the more specialised server edition, so make sure you download the correct version (most people just need the file named Mac OS X 10.5.4 Combo Update).
Once you've got the update, close any applications you are running (remembering to save your data), double-click the update to start and follow the instructions. You will have to restart your machine at the end of the installation and rebooting may take a little longer than normal - this only happens the first time you restart your machine. Hopefully you'll be back in business as soon as you see the login prompt.
    HTH.
    Mike.

  • Wireless keyboard and Wireless Mighty Mouse failure

    Hello,
I have just bought an iMac 20" with a wireless keyboard and wireless mighty mouse.
Both the keyboard and mouse will not work properly.
I followed the installation/setup instructions and paired first the keyboard and then mouse. Then the problems started.
    1. Mighty Mouse tracking is dreadful and very slow (even after adjusting mouse properties)
    2. Keyboard started to drop connection and then when awoke started repeating keys (as if key stuck)
    3. Keyboard then disconnected and will not be recognised when searching for Bluetooth devices nor can I pair it again.
    4. When both were working the Airport extreme wireless network would be lost (but I think that this is a red-herring and irrelevant)
Interesting once keyboard stopped working the wireless mouse tracking improved.
The only software I have installed since taking the iMac out of the box are (in order)
    - Running/installing all Apple updates (including firmware 1.1)
    - Installing Firefox 2.0
    - Installing Adobe Reader 8.0
    - Installing Stuffit Reader 11.0
    - Installing Canon Bubble Jet Printer driver
    - Installing latest version of Skype
If I use a USB mouse or keyboard they work ok.
This is the second replace imac within 2 weeks. The first had the same problem.
Can anybody help please as I'm new to Mac's after switching from a PC and I do not want to have to chuck either the keyboard or mouse or have the pain of Apple supplying me with a 3rd replacement iMac
    Jonathan

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Congrats on the new Mac.
Did you Repair Disk Permissions after the software updates and installs?
Whether this solves this issue for you, it is something that you should always do. Go to Apps/Ut5ilities/Disk Utility and select your OS X HDD. Press Repair Permissions. Run Repair Permissions until no more repairs are reported.

  • Wireless Mighty Mouse Right Button does not work well

Recently I bought in Online Apple Store a Wireless Mighty Mouse.
I installed the drivers that came in the CD, and, I defined in the System Preferences the second button of the mouse (the Right Button) to function as the Secondary Button.
But after the computer going to sleep and I wakes it up, or I stop a little to work with the Mouse, or then without none apparent reason, the Right Button behaves as the Left Button, like if it had one and only button in the Mouse.
To solve the problem I have to disconnect the mouse and/or the bluetooth connection, so that the Right Button functions again as I defined it in the System Preferences like a Secondary Button. But I think that is not the solution for who needs a mouse to work.
Therefore, I thank you a solution to solve this problem.
    Sincerely,
    Paulo
The computers where I worked with this Wireless Mighty Mouse and where I had this problem was:
    - a PowerBook 12", 1.5GHz
    - and a MacBook Pro 15", 1.83GHz
    - both with MacOS 10.4.8
    (Sorry for my bad english)

There are a few threads going describing this problem Discussions. (E.g., check out this one.)
It appears that there's probably a hardware QC issue with some fraction of the wireless Mighty Mice. Replacing the bad mouse -- either at a local Apple Store or via AppleCare online -- is what I'd suggest. (That's what I ended up doing and the replacement mouse has been fine.)
