Recently upgraded G4 MDD now chimes and starts but then shuts down, no vide

Hello all and thank you in advance for checking my question. I hope this particular question has not been brought up in the forums recently and if so, I am sorry for the duplication.
I recently received a G4 MDD FW800 with a single CPU running at 1.0 GHz with a broken motherboard but was assured that all else was working. I replaced the motherboard with a another motherboard, this one running at 167 MHz bus (as opposed to 133 MHz) which was equipped with a dual 1.42 GHz CPU.
The mac starts up, the power light illuminates, and the chime sounds, but no video appears and the machine shuts itself off in about 20 or so seconds. The machine is somewhat old and I am not sure if the PRAM battery is dead or if the power supply can't handle the dual CPU load. So I am stuck with a dead mac and I am looking for any hints as to how to go about diagnosing the problem.
The presence of the chime at least suggests that the motherboard is getting power, and that the RAM and CPU are OK, but I am not sure. Again, any help would be most appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hey everybody!
Well, I found the problem, at least I think I have...
I replaced the battery with a new one and at the same time I removed the heat sink and the processor daughter card and verified placement. After these two interventions, the mac starts like normal, whew, I am glad that is over Thanks to Allan for his quick and insightful reply.

Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys so you can access the built in utiliites to repair the startup disk if necessary or restore OS X using OS X Recovery

  • I shut down my computer and now it starts up, then shuts down again., I shut down my computer and now it starts up, then shuts down again.

I shut down my computer and now it won't restart. It starts, the apple logo appears, the wheel turns and then it's shuts down again. It has done that ever since.
My CD-Rom does not work so I can't reboot using the start up disk. Does anyone know what I can do to make it restart again ?????

    Try resetting the SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964).

  • It'll restart and sleep but NOT shut down

I've a system that won't shut down! When I select "shut down" from drop down, it'll go through the process but instead of shutting down it restarts. The only way to shut down the system is to hold down the power button.
The problem originated on a PowerBook G4 550 running 10.3.8 so I upgraded it to 10.4.8 but the problem still exists. I've tried disk warrior, permissions repair, and disk repair w/o luck. Any tips?

The problem exists even when there isn't anything connected to the Powerbook.
I've zapped the PRAM w/o success.

  • IPad Starting up but then shutting down seconds later!

My iPad ran out of battery yesterday, so obviosly I plugged it into the charger. After five minutes it came back on but then turned straight back off, in a matter of seconds! I left it to charge that night, and in the morning came back to it. But it did the same as it did before, it's continued to do this throughout the whole day. I have read some other discussions about this problem and the solution is to 'restart or reboot' the iPad. Although I cannot do because iTunes won't even respond to the iPad intill it turns on! Please help! Thanks.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

  • Since upgrading to Mavericks my Interface and hard drive are shutting down when Mac put to sleep

    Hi,
Since upgrading to Mavericks, when I put my Mac to sleep both my audio interface and my time machine hard drive are put to sleep also. Effectively making it so that when I start up my macbook again it means removing both the aforesaid from the usb outlets and putting them in again so that the mac recognises them.
This means two things. First of all all my time machine backups fail that are attempted whist the mac is put to sleep, whereas before they succesfully ran. It also means that my audio interface does'nt work and has to be re-set.
Anybody have the same kind of USB / Sleep issues?
    Many thanks in advance.

  • I recently bought the first generation ipod touch, but it doesn't work. I've tried restarting over and over, i've tried switching cables too. The apple logo stays on the screen and freezes, it then shuts down and repeats. My laptop doesnt recognize it.

    Please help
I bought it through a mutual friend.

    - Connect the iPod to your computer and try to make a backup
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    - Next reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
and try making a backup again. If you can't then there is no way of getting the info off the iPod unless data recovery company can do it. Not cheap.
    - If photos are in an existing iPod backup (iTune>Preferences>Devices  for iTunes backup or an iCloud backu) then restore from that backup. See the restore topic of:
    iOS: How to back up
    - If you used PhotoStream then try getting them from your PhotoStream. See that topic of:

  • HELP! DW CS3 starts briefly, then shuts down

I recently installed Dreamweaver CS3, and attempted to run
the program today (I am running Windows XP on an HP). When I select
the program, it gives me the error, "You cannot use this product at
this time. You must repair the problem by uninstalling and then
reinstalling this product or contacting your IT administrator or
    Adobe customer support for help."
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program twice, but
cannot figure out why I am still getting the error. Any ideas would
    be greatly appreciated!

This is usually a licensing problem, which can be caused by
    an
incompletely uninstalled trial version, using a creative
    suite with a
standalone licence or vice-versa, or some leftover from a
    beta product.
Running the CS3Clean script might help:

Otherwise, your best bet is to contact Adobe support.

further to my first description, the powerbook will run start up of the battery the go to permanent sleep after a few minutes.
also and wierdly, its will run ok with the power plugged in for as long as the battery charge lasts. Then it does something similar to sleep. but without thesleep light.
I'm am really scratching my head here.

  • I-MAC has the grey screen on start up, then shuts down after trying to load (bar shows 30%).

Shutdown my I-mac and next morning the grey screen appears with a loading bar which gets to 30% and then i-MAC shutsdown. Went into Utilities and it shows my files etc. but the verify and the repair disk have not corrected the issue(s).
What else can I do before I take it to the apple support. I live in Brunei and past history suggests that the Apple Support will just erase everything on the drive and I will lose the lot. I just want the photos and my own CD loaded music.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.

I've tried restoring my ipod too, but all my games (Zombie Farm, Tap Zoo, ect.) still crash before they can open.  Is this something I can fix?

Try a reset: Push and hold the Sleep/On/Off button and the Home button for approximately 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo reappears. Release the buttons. No content will be affected.

  • Mac Pro during start up, chimes, apple logo then shuts down.  Just began

My Mac Pro (with Cinema Display) during start up, chimes, fan, apple logo then shuts down.  Just began. Will not complete the boot

The chime is generated in software when your Mac passes the Power-On Self Test. If a suitable source of software can be found, booting is likely.
The dark gray Apple is not resident in any ROM. It can appear only after it is loaded from a boot device.
Your Mac will shut down during boot-up if the Boot Drive is so damaged that it cannot be mounted.
So focus your energy on repairing your Boot Drive using Recovery_HD or the 10.6 DVD, as appropriate.
