Reception 'issue' variable depending on location...

I have just conducted a bit of a test whilst out to post some mail.
At home (where my signal is notoriously poor, and where my nokia was awful) my signal is ok on the iphone4, but definitely drops if i hold the phone in such a way as to cover the bottom left hand corner. So you could in fact argue that the iphone4 is doing an ok job of getting a signal. But you would also say that holding the phone effects the reception.
Whilst out to the post box I stopped where i had 5 bars 3G reception (in its car cradle), i stopped and held the phone in the death grip, no change, 3 mins later, no change. I removed the bumper (sorry, forgot to mention i have a bumper), so, i removed the bumper, and held again, ensuring i was doing my best to cause the issue, no change! No issue!!
So, i have to conclude from this unscientific test, that the phone is not effected to any great extent where the signal is good in the first place. Where the signal is poor (my house), the iphone seems to do a good job of getting one, but can then be effected by holding it!
Can anyone else try to repeat this type of test?
What do people think?

Hi everyone, I just got my iphone 4G a few days ago and I must say- this is the best phone Ive ever owned in my lifetime- although I havent tried any of the other new phones- I just wanted to share my experiance with this- First off I bought a case the day I got my new iphone 4G- I just think thats the logical thing to do after all- the first thing that ran through my mind was to protect the glass screens- Maybe some people don't want to invest money in buying a case but come on, $30 bucks is not alot of money and infact one of the employees at AT&T actually gave me one for free since i brought a friend with me who also upgraded to the new iphone-
I havent had any problems with reception except in certain areas that AT&T doesnt have good coverage but thats not the iphones fault- I don't understand why people have to make such a big deal with the new antenna- infact I tried to press down in the bottom corner to see if its true but nothing happened- maybe people purposely trying to make the antenna have a problem are trying to find a reason to make a deal out of it-
No product is going to be 100% perfect and seriously if you weigh out all of the cool features and everthing that the iphone 4G does- is the antenna issue really that unbareable-
Anyways putting a case over the phone does cover the metal bands and protects the back glass- so why wouldnt anyone wanna buy a case for their new iphone?
Thats like saying when you buy a pair of contacts, wouldnt the logical thing to do is to buy a case and a bottle of solution- and even though some people think its uneccessary some people buy the cleaner to clean their contacts?
Anyways- im only here to say that Im happy with my phone and I havent seen any problems what so ever- all this negative feedback- i decided to post something positive-
Remember back in the days when cellphones cost over $1,000- didnt have video recording especially HD recording didnt exist- no camera, no app store, horrible reception and battery life- expensive phone plan, no Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, no color, no touchscreen, no internet, extremely slow- very limited on storage space, extremely big and ugly in design...
And some of you guys out there complaining that you paid $199 or $299 for a phone with all these features and more listed above and making a big deal over something thats really not an unbearable problem that can be avoided =)
its so funny how quick the world forgets- personally i thank apple for stirring up the business world forcing all the companies to finally wake up and give us what weve been demanding- if apple never released the iphone in 2007, how long would we have to wait for someone else to do it?

  • Antenna Issues appear dependent on location

Hi All, just wanted to weigh in on this. There are lots of posts about the "grip of death" however in my experience its totally dependent on where you are?
I'm at work now and my phone has full signal over GPRS (out in the sticks so no 3G). No matter how I grip or hold the phone i can't get the bars to drop, not even by one bar.
At home my signal is a very weak and I can get it to drop off by applying "the grip".
I have tried in varying locations and with varying signal strengths. Sometimes the phone will lose bars and others it wont.
Maybe I am just lucky in the South East of England but for the majority of the time the phone works great - unless I am in a poor signal area.
I'm not down playing or denying the issue - just speculating that it could be more to do with the area you live in and how many bars the phone says you have compared to how many it actually gets rather than a fault with the actual antenna.
I'll post again after the forthcoming update but for now I'll just say I am more than happy with my iPhone 4 - o2 just needs to improve their network coverage!

Yep, totally agree with you. I've experienced the same. I even did the so called 'Death Grip' on a Samsung phone the other day, Ha!

  • My new IPad 3 cannot connect to WIFI even it has a full bar of the reception. In the same location, my PC and my smart phone get a full bar connection without any issues.  How can I do to fix the issues (can I switch to IPad 2)?

My new Ipad 3 cannot connect to WIFI even it has a full bar of reception. In the same location, my Windows 7 PC and Andorid Smart phone can connect to the same WIFI without any issues.  How can I fix it?  Without WIFI, the WIFI only IPAD is nearly useless. If it cannot be fixed, can I get a replacement for IPad 2?

Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation. If defective, you'll get a replacement.

  • Nice updates/fixes but what about the reception issue?

Don't want to beat a proverbial dead horse, but what about making the IPhone 4 a better receiver of calls? My 3Gs was the BEST phone I ever owned. I rarely had a dropped call, I was able to make and receive calls in places where no phone I had owned previously could. When I read that this phone had the best reception of any IPhone (according to Apple) I went and made the switch. Yes, I read many posts where folks say just that, great phone. I am on IPhone 4 number three and all have been plagued with reception issues, thought the first two were worse than this one. I go to the same locations every day and the 3Gs sent and received calls remarkably better. Just sayin.....

What ps issue? I have none!! The reception issue is real and I lose signal in places where my 3GS would not.. I can hold my 3gs any way I like and still use the internet.. While using my iPhone 4 in the same place, all I get is the spinning wheel of death and it does not connect.. I've had the bumper on it since I got it and while it may help a little, it does NOT make the issue disappear..
Just because an issue doesn't effect YOUR phone, doesn't mean it's not an issue for others..
if you are not using a case then you are just ... idk... slow or something.
because apple put the antenna on the outside of the phone it is easier to attenuate the signal but it also gives much better reception. i have not dropped one call on my iphone 4... i was dropping tons of calls on my 3Gs and i am in the same area.
i have tried to attenuate the signal on my phone and cannot with the case on no matter how i hold it. if i take the case off and hold the sweet spot it drops like crazy. maybe your bumper isn't covering the antenna well enough.
i got the incipio NGP for 19 bucks at walmart. if you put that case on and still have the issue then i think you are totally full of cr@p.

  • 4G LTE data reception issue in area of work building

Hi, I'm having a data reception issue in a certain area at work.  The signal indicator at the upper right of the homescreen shows "4GLTE" but this is clearly inaccurate since I am not able to navigate to websites or send/receive multimedia messages.  If I move ~30 feet east in the building, the reception is restored.  Two people with iPhone 5 devices have the same issue.  However, the Verizon iPhone 5 allows you to turn off LTE.  Once this was done and the signal fell back to 3G, reception was restored, albeit with slower speeds, but at least reception wasn't completely blocked.  I understand 4G is not available in all areas, but in this case, the phone is not automatically switching to 3G and there is no workaround because there is no option to turn off LTE on the Z10.  In the "Settings" -> "Network Connections" -> "Mobile Network" -> "Network Technology" dropdown, the only values are:
UMTS/GSM (when I switch to this, no networks are found)
    Global (the current selection)
    LTE/CDMA
This is a big problem for me because for 8+ hours in the day I can't receive MMS messages or navigate to websites.

    Hi, Nate650,
Sorry to hear about your problem with 4G. First, let me ask, have you updated your Z10 to the latest official software version? I had a similar problem with my Z10. After about an hour on the phone with CS, we figured out it was a problem with the tower near me. The problem was fixed by VZW and I have not had connection issues. You are right, though, about the Z10 falling back to 3G. Mine did before the update but not since.

  • Issue with changing database location at runtime

I am having a similar issue to:
Re: Issue with changing database location at runtime
where I am using Crystal Reports 2008 SP 3 fix pack 3.3 and a OLE DB connection to a SQL 2008 R2 server. Running on a computer on the network where the report can see the original development server is fast, other computers where that server is not available are hanging 20 seconds before coming up.
I am using the same code from the Crystal Sample app to change the connection on each table. I found that the slowness comes the first time the ReportDocument object is accessed to get the collection of database tables, before the connection info is set.
Fix pack 3.4 was mentioned in that post.  Does fix pack 3.4 fix that issue? I don't see fix pack 3.4 on the downloads page (https://websmp130.sap-ag.de/sap%28bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==%29/bc/bsp/spn/bobj_download/main.htm)

I just found on the reports that were having the issue there was a SQL Expression.  Per this thread:
Re: Report load is slow after changing database servers
There was an issue with that and the fix is not out til the end of Feb so I found a way not to use the SQL Expression and the speed is much better.
However, your information provided led me to this post:
Cannot Change Table Location, but Only for One Report
And I am also experiencing an issue where the table location is not changing on one subreport and I will look into that as a possible solution.
Thanks so much for your help.

  • One SO but I would like Post Goods Issue from different Storage Locations?

    Dear All,
Pls help me solve this issue below:
I have one SO, Item xzy, Qty = 300 but I would like to Post Goods Issue from different Storage Locations (Qty = 100 for each locations)
    E.g I have 3 storage locations: A, B, C and need to assign Post Goods Issue authorizations to 3 users U1, U2, U3:
    - U1 can Post Goods Issue from storage location A only (but cannot from B, C)
    - U2 can Post Goods Issue from storage location B only (but cannot from A, C)
    - U3 can Post Goods Issue from storage location C only (but cannot from A, B)
How can I assign the Authorization for users?
How can I create Outbound Delivery:
    a. 1 SO --> 1 outbound delivery --> Post GI 3 times
    b. 1 SO --> 3 outbound delivery --> Post GI
Thank you very much for your support
    Cao Huy.

    Hi Senthils,
    Pls see my comment below:
For Authorization check for storage Location
    1. GO to the following Menu path
Spro>Material Management> Inventory manangement and Physical Inventory>Authorization Management>Authorization check for Storage Location.
Here you have activate authorization tick for storage location and plant combination.
    --> Done
    2. Set authorization for Authorization object MM_MSEG_LGO thro Basis for the combination of movement type and storage location
    for each user.
    --> Done
There are 3 storage locations(A,B,C) in one outbound delivery, and when user 01 tries to Post GI this outbound, it means that the system will Post GI for all line items in this outbound, but user 01 has not authorization for location B, C.
How can user 01 Post GI from only location A in this outbound???
And then user 02 will Post GI from only location B in this outbound,
user 03 will Post GI from only location C in this outbound.
    Thanks
    Cao Huy

  • Any other ideas on the reception issue?

I am wanting to ask if anyone else has any other ideas on fixing the reception issue?
I just got off the phone with an Apple "Supervisor". He agreed with me that the software update will only correctly display AT&T's signal that I am getting. He agreed that it will NOT remedy the dropped calls that alot of us are now getting with the use of the new iPhone 4. He also agreed that I either need to hold the phone differently or pay extra money either to Apple or to another manufacturer for a case that I have never used on previous iPhones.
So, I am not going to return my beautiful new iPhone 4, but I do want to find out if anyone else has found anything else to remedy this problem without doing anything listed above. I am not trying to beat a dead horse, but I am tired of dealing with the big corporation that Apple has become. The same corporation that now, only cares about the number of iPhones and "Bumpers" sold as opposed to the customers satisfaction that purchased their iPhones.

I don't have any problems either, with or without the bumpers on... it would be nice if ATT had mentioned where in particular their network was having the issues... also I've seen a lot of reports from the UK re the reception problems and one carrier's sim card (which is slightly too big and is shorting the antenna) seems to be the culprit in some cases...
    AT&T's statement is below
"AT&T has come through with a statement on reports the company has been capping upload speeds for iPhone users.
In a statement we first spotted through D: All Things Digital, AT&T is describing the problem as one pertaining to a software issue.
AT&T informs that a software defect some Alcatel-Lucent equipment has been crippling 3G HSUPA performance, and says that vendor is working on a repair, though a schedule isn’t forthcoming just right now.
AT&T and Alcatel-Lucent jointly identified a software defect — triggered under certain conditions – that impacted uplink performance for Laptop Connect and smartphone customers using 3G HSUPA-capable
wireless devices in markets with Alcatel-Lucent equipment. This impacts less than two percent of our wireless customer base. While Alcatel-Lucent develops the appropriate software fix, we are providing normal 3G uplink speeds and consistent performance for affected customers with HSUPA-capable devices."

  • Variable dependency in Analyzer

    Hi All,
My requirement is like i have many variables which are dependent on one another.
    Like country, subcountry.
    country - authorized variable
subcountry - list of subcountries corresponding to the country selected by user.
Here when the user selects one country, and press show values for subcountry, it should show valid subcountries for that country, out of which user choose one subcountry.
So i have made subcountry as user exit variable and wrote logic inside i_step = 2. But i dont think this functionality is not possible in query designer. I have many variables like this. Can anybody help me how to achieve this functionality in analyzer.

Indeed you can have performance impact, especially if you are supporting Business Explorer Analyzer Tools in Windows Microsoft Office Excel 2007. As far as my experience can tell me, Windows Microsoft Office Excel 2003 is a much better support for Business Explorer and offers far more stability than the later version.
That´s something you have to try and measure...
Although the 6 dropdown box will not increase the filter scope, it will just decrease, so less data, as you are doing your selection in dropdown boxes, is to be displayed in some of those queries (data providers), or is to be target of a planning function/sequence.
This way, the performance should only be affected by what (I mean how many and what dimension they can have) queries or data providers are to be displayed (in same workbook) you are using for planning and executing these functions. Remember that every refresh of a query will take some time of the processor...
What you can do is instead of having that many queries to take variable dependency into account, I don´t know if it is the case; is by using the master data attributes.
Let me give one example I'm familiar with:
Country / Company Code / Cost Center
Cost Center has in master data the attributes company code and country
These 3 characteristicas can be all in one data provider that will affect himself.
You can use 3 dropdown boxes that are called by the same data provider that have this relationship.
You can use this line of thinking in your Country / Sub-country / ....
    Hope I answered you...

  • Populate a bind variable depending on the previous page.

    Hi,
How do you populate a bind variable depending on the previous page (where the user is “branching from”)?
    Example.
    Page 10 has a report:
    Select Value1_Desc
    From Table
    Where Value1_ID = :P10_VALUE1_ID
Page 5 can branch to page 10 and pass along the Value1_Desc from P5_VALUE1_ID into :P10_VALUE1_ID.
Page 8 can also branch to page 10 with an item value based on the same field, passing Value1_ID from P8_VALUE1_ID into :P10_VALUE1_ID.
Is there a way to make the report in page 10 accept the proper bind variable value depending on the previous page?
    Thanks
    Matt

    Matt,
Page 5 can branch to page 10 and pass along the Value1_Desc from P5_VALUE1_ID into :P10_VALUE1_ID.Page 5 can branch to page 10 and pass along the VALUE1_ID from P5_VALUE1_ID into :P10_VALUE1_ID.
The normal method is to have the branch pass the value in the URL, e.g., the branch from page 5 would specify:
    f?p=&APP_ID.:10:&SESSION.::NO::P10_VALUE1_ID:&P5_VALUE1_ID.

You are right, nobody knows when the next iPhone will be released. Odds are almost certainly not before WWDC in June (WWDC is June 6-10) and that has been a popular forum for Apple to announce new stuff.
Also keep in mind that at least a few news stories have said to be prepared for the next iPhone to, possibly, be delayed due to parts shortages coming out of Japan (I believe they get batteries, screens and Flash RAM from Japanese sources, many of whom have already experienced production delays or disruptions due to things like power outages).

  • 4s reception issues

got reception issues on my iphone 4s. At places, it keeps dropping the reception, then after 5 seconds, it comes back with full bars. Also, when I go underground (99% of the time) it keeps showing I have 1 bar of reception, when I come back out, it takes a couple of minutes to pick up the signal again. I keep having to go into airplane mode all the time to get the signal again.
I know this isn't my sim or my provider as I've borrowed a samsung galaxy 2 and I don't have any issues there.
Is there any way to fix this? It's really annoying.
    I'm on ios 5.1

I'm having similar problems w/ my 4s. Have you discovered any remedies that make reception better, stronger?

  • Does The iPhone 4 Still Have The Reception Issue

hey guys i wanna know does the iphone 4 still have the "Death Grip" which is the reception issue (antenna issue) with iphone 4 when u hold ur hand (or fingers) near the antennas and the reception goes down to like 1 bar (n sometimes makes it go to no service).
i think someone said they have made newer models of the iphone 4 what have fixed it but i am not 100% sure
have they fixed it if i buy an iphone 4 now or does it still have the reception issue
here is what it is if u dont know what the reception issue is : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ixIHyEPO5g

My blackberry still has the reception / antenna issue. And always has. In fact, it is so bad that I can terminate the connection if I hold the phone with my head and shoulder.
My iPhone 4 (not s) on the other hand has never been a problem for me.
A lot of noise—not much benefit. However Apple did apply new engineering to the problem—which is great!

  • IPhone 4 reception issues are not design related! Proof inside this topic!

    Hello,
I conducted some very strict tests to verify the reception bug some people are reporting.
*Test 1:* Holding the iPhone 4 at a specific and precise position with a plastic protection and the left hand covering the bottom left corner making sure both antenna parts are connected by my hand.
*Test 2:* Holding the iPhone 4 at a specific and precise position WITHOUT any plastic protection and the left hand covering the bottom left corner making sure both antenna parts are connected by my hand, making sure my left hand is perfectly dry.
*Test 3:* Holding the iPhone 4 at a specific and precise position WITHOUT any plastic protection and the left hand covering the bottom left corner making sure both antenna parts are connected by my hand, making sure my left hand is wet (wetting it before the test)
    *Tests duration:* 2 full minutes.
    Here are the results:
*Test 1:* Full reception (5 bars), EDGE data network working. Calls are working perfectly as well as data operations (Safari).
*Test 2:* Full reception (5 bars), EDGE data network working. Calls are working perfectly as well as data operations (Safari).
*Test 3*: Full reception (5 bars), EDGE data network working. Calls are working perfectly as well as data operations (Safari).
Geographic location: Paris (France), Bastille district, inside my apartment. Note that I don't get 3G on this location, wathever phone I use (Veryfied with HTC Magic, iPhone 3G and iPhone 4, it's all the same on this aspect).
*So same exact result for all three tests!*
    *_So what does it mean?_*
It either means that not all iPhone 4 are affected by this issue (as mine is not affected), or that this issue is not simply related to how you hold your phone and does involve also other elements, like the phone baseband firmware not dealing well with some GSM network configurations (different frequencies...etc) when adding noise (which is what your hand do when holding the phone) or something else.
This could give credits to the AppleInsider theory that it's related to how the BaseBand firmware is dealing with some GSM network situations and so that it's software related and that a fix is coming soon (see: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/06/25/deathgrip_hysteria_may_end_monday_with_ios_401.html).
But it can also mean that it's still purely hardware related and that it's a production fault that affects only some units but not all.
But it's clearly not a design fault, otherwise all units would be affected and so I would be able to reproduce it with mine, which is not the case (as demonstrated by the tests I conducted).
_*My advice to those who are affected:*_
    1) Wait a week to see if a software fix get released (as apparently, according to AppleInsider, it may come this very monday as part of an iOS 4.0.1 update), or at least for a confirmation that it's not a software issue in some GSM network configurations.
    2) If it's confirmed that it's a production issues on some units, then get your phone exchanged.

    Well documented post.
After reading through all the reports I found myself intentionally holding the phone in the "Death-grip".
I went out that evening and used the phone perfectly fine all day, holding it with a few things, which is actually the way I hold it anyway when texting / msging etc.
I have a lot of faith that Apple with resolve this with a software update, and hope the fault is related to the BaseBand firmware reported in the appleinsider.
I am angered by everyone accepting the bloggers so-called "OFFICIAL RESPONSE" as Apples 'Official Response'.
There is no way, that Apple (Steve Jobs), would use that response via email, back to a single customer.
Officially... Apple will direct their response to the news directly, or at least something on their website.
People need to stop jumping on the "Steve Jobs told us to just hold it differently" band-wagon, and wait for something thats actually "OFFICIAL"...
As i've said in previous posts, just because the news and this blogger has put the word "Official" next to it, does not make it so...
    Rant over...
