Recharging battery via USB - N95-2 8GB

Does somebody know why isn't possible to recharge the batteries via USB cable in the N95-2 8GB? Hope is not just my phone.
So far I remember connecting a Nokia N73 and a SE M600i to my laptop at work and both recharged the battery while connected.
Why they took that option away?

I always wondered about this, charging from the USB - when I got my N95 initally I assumed it did charge from the USB - much like other handsets do.
I'm not aware of any Nokia phone that charges via the USB connector. (not being aware is not the same as there isnt one!) The maximum current of a USB jack is only 500mA when connected directly to the Host port. Even then the controller is not supposed to supply all that power, unless a routine in the device requests it.
There are moves to try and standardise the connector:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/09/21/omtp_data_standard/
To a mini USB across all the manufacturers but I doubt this will be soon.
I don't think the firmware will allow for adding this function, as the 5v power will need to be routed in the hardware to the phone's charging circuit. If the software were a problem then I see no reason or way that it would be disabled, (would need some kind of switching device to disable it extra hardware in the charging circuit etc)
I'm not sure if there is something more than just connecting the power in the CA-100 - I have one of them and it gets a bit warm, so perhaps there is a resistor or regulator in it for some reason.
The phone will (in the firmware) will also need to request the system to provide the full 500mA to it (should the phone need it)
I have many Nokia Chargers, some are 5.7v some are 5.0v some are 300mA some are 800mA. Perhaps if there is also a "One size fits all" then somekind of control/conversion from the 5v to a different voltage will also be required in the phone.
I recall the Nokia 2110 would have a problem with an onboard transistor that used to fail, and subsequently the phone wouldn't charge the battery, even though the meter was showing full. Perhaps this is the lesson that Nokia learnt all those years ago
Shunts...
I will mostly be communicating with a Nokia E72 Zodium Black
Nokia E72-1 with Vr 051.018.207.04 Software

  • N95 crashes in Data transfer via USB cable, help?

I ve been using my N95 with no problems for more than a year. Sometime ago I bought a new 8Gb Micro SDHC memory card, it was recognised by the phone and worked perfectly. But after the card was stored with data for more than 1gb, the phone crashes everytime I try to copy even the smallest file on the memory card through Data transfer mode via USB cable. Than I try to copy a file an error message is displayed in Windows XP and the phone reboots. The strangest thing that I can copy without a problem even a 500 mb movie file to the phone if the stored space on the memory card is say like 985mb, but after that it will crash even with the copying a 10 kb text file.
    Any help would be appreciated.

No, its not the file system or Memory card itself - cause transfering a data through a card reader works fine and the phone recognize correctly everything transfered. Can it be the case of USB cable driver? May be I need to install it or go for a newer version? BTW, I removed Nokia PC Suite from my notebook - cause I dont used it much, but this program still used a lot of my PC resources without asking to. I belive that PC Suite is not nesessary for using the phone through a Data Transfer mode?

  • Using N95 as a Modem Via USB on O2UK Network

Hi I am trying to connect to the internet with my laptop using the N95 as a modem via USB. I have tried a couple of different ways to do this. I've tried using the one touch access in Nokia PC suite and it gets up to the part where it says "verifying username and password" then says unable to establish a connection. I have also tried connecting from the "connect to" tab in the start menu on xp (also tried vista) and selecting my mobile as the modem through which to connect. I am an O2UK Customer and i have been told the user name and pass to use to connect is user=mobileweb and password=password. Im sure this is true because it does get past the verifying username and password bit when i do it this way. But when it gets to the "Registering your computer on the network" part it fails.
What am i doing wrong. I have tried this in both GSM and UMTS mode.
are there any other O2UK Customers who have managed to use their N95 as a modem? If so please can you post here and explain how i do it.

Do you have an IBM / Lenovo Laptop?
I do and I checked the event logs and noticed failure 680 which indicated that no dial tone could be obtained (cable not plugged it) or similar symptom.
I used to receive the error "one touch access failed to establish a network connection" using the Nokia PC Suite. I checked under start | settings | network connections and selected properties on the valid dial-up device. Then I noticed that the device was using the Internal Thinkpad modem instead of the Nokia. This explained the error 680 as the Thinkpad modem was not cabled to the phone line. After changing the connect using device from thinkpad to Nokia all worked well.
Let me know if this helps.

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

  • Why doesn't E71 recharge through the USB cable?

When the phone is connected to a computer via USB cable, its battery drains continuously. I have to connect the power cable separately to charge the battery again. The battery (and the phone) is new and alright. Only won't recharge through USB when connected. Or is there some setting I'm missing for the USB connection?

My previous SE W610i phone was bought in that year (the present Nokia one was bought just the last week). The SE model did have the ability to charge through USB. Guess my expectations are not too high, after all. In fact, Nokia is always pretty far behind the competition when it comes to the features' availability and their implementation. That's why it's falling behind in the smartphone arena.
To add to what Psycho has already mentioned, your highlighted statement above is somewhat unfair. The various manufacturers all have their pros and cons and some are better at certain things than others. It is up to the consumer to make a to select the make and model of phone that best suits their needs.
Since you brought up the W610 and to emphasise the point I made above, it too is lacking a lot of features that are present on the E71, such as gps, wifi, 3g. 3.2mpxl camera, just to list a few.

  • Is anyone having trouble with recharging battery on ipad4? It does charge but is very slow

I have a new iPad and it seems to be very slow in charging the battery eg 1 hour for 10% of charge.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem or am I doing something wrong?

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

  • Charging iPad One vs iPad 3rd gen via USB...

just got an iPad 3rd gen.  As I've read here, apparently, the PC's USB port doesn't supply enough power to make the 3rd gen battery charging icon say "charging".  Instead, it reads "not charging".  However, it initially DOES say 'charging', before changing to 'not charging' a couple of minutes later.
Question:  my iPad 1st gen ALWAYS charges via PC USB port.  Why?  Both AC chargers are 10 watts I believe, so why would the 1st gen charge while the third gen doesn't?  Does the 3rd gen require more charging watts than the 1st gen unit does?

Using the 10W charger, an iPad 1 will charge in about 3-4 hours, however, the iPad 3 requires about double the time. How long does it take to charge your iPad 1 using the PC's USB port?
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). • My black Nano: discharges and then won't charge via USB

(I'm going to cross post this as I mistakenly replied to a thread in the first gen. nano forum)
    (december 25 2006)
Took a new 8gb black nano out of the box this morning and it looks dead in the water. When it's plugged into my macbook pro via USB, it makes a very faint rapid clicking sound. Nothing comes up on the screen. Attempts to get a spark of life from other computers (iBook, G5 iMac) were fruitless.
Charging, letting it sit, attempts at resetting.. nothing has had any effect.
We'll be bringing it back to an apple store tomorrow morning.
    (december 27 2006)
Ok, a little update. My dad brought the nano down to the apple store (two hours away - he was going to be in the area for work) and purportedly they hooked it up to a wall charger and it fired right up. Started charging and worked. They handed it back to him and he came back home.
When he got home, we tried to power it on: no luck. Reset sequence: no luck. Plugged it into the USB cable: nothing. Tried it on other macs in the house with the same cable: nothing. Finally had the bright idea to try the firewire cable from my sister's older iPod. Wham! Charging, but the nano doesn't support data over firewire. So we let it charge for a little and then plugged it back into my MBP with the USB; now there was both charging and data action. It got all charged up and loaded with music.
Today it came off the USB cable, fully charged, and was used intermittently during the day. I was watching the battery indicator; it seemed to be going down rather quickly. In the afternoon I charged it back to full again and went for a run with the nike+ kit (totally awesome, by the way)
By the end of the run (40 minutes) it was in the red. I plugged it in for a few minutes to sync, and then disconnected it and left it alone.
7 hours later, it's bedtime - and the nano is unresponsive again. Totally dead. No power. Doesn't charge.
I just found the firewire cable and plugged the nano into my MBP using that - charging! It's alive. I'm just going to let it charge all night. We'll see what happens tomorrow after a run in the morning.

There was a power change for Nanos a couple of versions back from Firewire to USB. This means that some car adapters and wall adapters will work with older iPods, but not newer ones.

  • Disable auto charge via usb

So the question is as that: if it's possible to disable auto charge when plugging iphone to the macbook in order to save the battery.
Tried everything but couldn't find any solution. Moreover it seems like I was questioned something like "permit to charge iPhone via usb?" when I first plugged it to the Mac, but I'm not sure
    Thanks alot for any help!!

Ahh, I understand. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of a solution to the problem, other than not plugging the iPhone into the laptop while the laptop is unplugged. There are cables you can get that prevent syncing when you plug in while allowing the iPhone to recharge, but I'm not aware of anything that works the other way around. Maybe someone else will have an idea.

  • IPad won't charge using power adapter but will charge via USB

I have an iPad 1 that recently stopped charging using the power adapter. "Broken power adapter or cable" I thought and reached for a spare that I have. That didn't work either. The original power adapter however DID charge another iPad without any problems, so the problem cannot be with the adapter or cable.
Now this is the wierd bit - using the original cable plugged into my laptop I get the usual "Not charging" message but the iPad DOES charge slowly this way.
I rebooted the iPad, restarted it in recovery mode and restored the firmware, cleaned out the 30-pin connector port - all those useful bits of advice that you find on the internet but all to no avail. The iPad just will not charge using any of the many  original Apple iPad charger sthat I have been able to get my hands on but will only charge on an underpowered USB port!
The 30-pin connector must work otherwise it wouldn't charge via USB. Can there be some kind of wierd internal hardware defect that might cause such behavior?
I fear that if I take a 3 year old iPad to the Apple Store they might just give me their best smile and show me the latest iPads but this old iPad works fine otherwise and I don't really want to replace it.
    Anyone got any ideas?

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
And this - Unplug the charger from the iPad and then replug. May resume charging.

  • When iPhone 5s is connected via USB no audio is heard

    Hi There -
I've seen older threads on this issue but I don't think I've really come across any solutions. My issue started yesterday; now before reading further I have to ask that you please keep in mind that I did perform the latest upgrade on my iPhone a bit earlier in the day.
When I connect my iPhone to my vehicle sync system and announce that I'd like to connect via USB, the voice recognition repeats my request and then the music on my iPhone shows to be playing on the display in my vehicle. The problem is that though the music appears to be playing and the minutes played are being displayed there is no audio coming through. When I switch to the Bluetooth Audio option all sound comes through.
Now, as a 2nd test, we connected my sons iPhone 5s via USB (he has not taken the latest update on his iPhone) and the same issue happens with his. Voice recognition changes to the USB format as requested, music appears to be playing but no audio is heard. When we change his phone to Bluetooth Audio the audio comes through nice and clear.
I'm not entirely convinced the update caused the issue so I wanted to put this out there to see if anyone has run into this and were able to actually resolve the issue.
I know the USB cable is working fine because when I do plug it into either phone the phone makes the little connection sound and pops up a brief battery percentage box. I also know the cable is working because when we announce USB as our audio of choice the system recognize USB via the iPhone.
One other thing I tried looking for was the option on the phone to switch from Docked to Synch - I know on my iPhone 4 I was able to switch back and forth through iTunes and would also have the option if I tried to watch anything via You Tube when connected to the dock; I cannot find this anywhere on the 5s when connected via USB.
    Help is greatly appreciated!!!

I have had similar troubles with wifi.. some improvement removing BlackBerry desktop software & drivers & reinstalling after reboot... I used the same installer I had previously, but a fresh downloaded installer couldn't hurt...

    Go to Internet Tethering.
    Select USB.
    Turn on Tethering.
On the computer run the Blackberry Link software for the Z10:
Once the software starts, connect the Z10 via the USB cable to the PC.
    Open the browser.
You should now be able to cruise the net, and do emails.
With the Playbook, the Bluetooth tethering does not yet work. This may be an OS or communications issue.
The best way to tether the Playbook for full speed and functions is using the WiFi option. Simply turn on the WiFi hot spot option and follow the instructions. The Playbook WiFi must also be properly set up. The Z10 USB and Bluetooth tethering mode must be turned off when using the WiFi mode. You can leave the base Bluetooth active on the Z10. There is a lot of available information about using the WiFi hot spot from the Z10. The process is very similar to the past models of Blackberry phones.
If you use the Bridge mode to tether, the Playbook email client software does not work very well. The browser will work fairly well, but slower with the Bridge mode. With WiFi the Playbook can brows at very high speed. With Bluetooth it is restricted to about 1.5 to 2.5 mb/sec. Take care that the WiFi mode burns through battery time very fast on both the Playbook and the Z10. Using the Bridge mode uses less power consumption than WiFi.
To use the Bridge mode, make sure the Playbook and the Z10 are first Bluetooth mated. Also the Bridge mode has to be set up between the devices. You will have to first install the Bridge software in to the phone for this to work.
I did extensive testing between the Z10 and the Playbook. They function well together as far as Internet and email are concerned, in consideration of using either tether or Bridge, depending on what you want to do.
From what I understand the Bridge mode uses some compression. It will not be as fast as using WiFi or Bluetooth tethering. The data cost using the Bridge mode is probably a bit lower because of the compression.
As far as the Bridge phone options are concerned, these features are not yet available. From what I read in a number of articles there are going to soon be some updates coming out to fix this. The Bridge options are a big part of the tablet application with the Blackberry phone. This was the big original application point of this tablet, otherwise any generic tablet would do the job.

From the look of this thread it appears that no one outside of Canada uses an OS 10 BB yet.  247 views and no comments or help ?  I'm sure I'm not the only BB user that uses Tether.  If BB doesn't care to help then this will just be another nail in the corporate coffin that has been projected.
Maybe we need different forums for US users as the Canadians don't seem to have the same issues or cares.
The whole idea of the app Tether is not to have to pay the outrageous tethering fees that US carriers charge and it has worked well for years.  But it can't work and won't work in the future without help from BB and the BB community.

  • IPod Charges on a Docking Station but not via USB

Bit of an odd one this, I have been living with it for a good many years, however now as I have discovrered the usefullness of this forum I will ask for some advice on the cause of this.
Simply my iPod will not charge when connected to usb, eg charger, from the computer. When connected to a docking station that runs off mains power it will charge. It holds the charge well.
The problm first started when I plugged it into a faulty USB port. The keyway was broken so I managed to insert the connector the wrong way round. This messed up the iPod and I wasn't able to get it working again untill I got it home and connected it up to my computer. From this point onwards it has not charged via usb.
Naturaly I would have thought the Battery, or possibly some charging unit to be at fault in this, however as it depends on how I go about charging it, I am unsure as to what it would be.
    Any thoughts?

The 5th generation iPod had two sets of power input pins on the dock connector. One set is for USB power (+5V) while the other set is for Firewire connections (+12V and up), a hold over from when all iPods could charge and sync via a Firewire connection. The 5th generation could only sync via USB but Apple left the charging ability from Firewire connections to allow the iPod to be backwards compatible with all the various chargers and docks already "in the field". Back then, almost all docks used the Firewire pins for inputting charging voltage (usually +12V) so they would be backward compatible with all previous iPods.
Sooooo, what has probably happened is when you plugged in the USB cord backward with your iPod, you damaged the input circuitry of the iPod for the USB voltage pins (perhaps a diode or resistor burned up) and now you can no longer have input on those pins. However your Firewire connection is still fine. So when you plug into your old dock which still supports Firewire charging you can charge your iPod. Note that almost all newer docks no longer have the Firewire pin connections and will all charge via USB only. So your iPod will not charge on new docks.
I hope that answers your question,
    Patrick
