"Recipient is a member of group" smart mailbox??

Hello,
I'd like all mails to and from a group to be collected in a smart mailbox. That option is not in the smart mailbox widget. Can anyone suggest a work around?
This would allow me, for example, to build a smart group (in Address Book) with a company name and automatically put all e-correspondence with that group in one smart `box.
Thanks,
Chris

If you create a smart mailbox and select meets conditions: ANY at the top you can: Add two rules:
1. Recipient - contains - <company.com>
2. From - contains - <company.com>
That's a work around that doesn't involve groups in the address book. I've found that mixing smart mailboxes rules and address book groups does not work well. Hope this helps.

In creating rules for a new smart mailbox, I see: 'Sender is member of Group', but do not see 'Recipient is member of Group'.

  • Smart mailbox issues with "any recipient" or "from" in 10.4.11, mail 2.1.3

smart mailbox isn't reacting to its rules correctly. I have added a new group in adressbook then created a smart mailbox with "sender is member of group" and set the group accordingly. No joy.
I also tried right clicking an adress in a message and choosing "create smart mailbox". The rule is: from, contains, "adress that i right-clicked". no joy.
    am i missing something?

    Good news, great to hear!
But with the problems you ebded up with, at the very least do this...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

  • Sync Smart Groups and Smart Mailboxes across network

Is there a way to Sync my Smart Groups in Addressbook and Smart Mailboxes in Mac Mail across my Macbook and My iMac? I have iCloud.
It would be nice if I did not have to duplicate these "Smart" groups on each computer.
    Thanks Mac Community.

Can you just type out the criteria of the smart group, or post a screen shot of the smart group.
With all the editorializing, I can't figure out what you want to do.
Where are the contacts in the groups, iCloud or On My Mac?

  • Multiple Groups of Conditions in Smart Mailboxes

In Yosemite Mail is it possible to create more than one group of conditions for a smart mailbox?
In iTunes, when creating smart playlists, you can press OPTION while clicking on the '+' sign to add conditions. A new group of conditions can be added.
I do not see anything similar in Mail.
    Thanks,

I think you miss the point.
I'm looking to make a smart mailbox to show mail with
    (Condition A AND Condition B)

  • Linking addresses in a Smart Mailbox to a Smart Group

I hav set up a Smart Mailbox for replies to a question that I posted on LinkedIn. I have received eight or so replies and I want to reply to all the people who answered my question in one email. Is there a quick way to transfer all the addresses into a smart group so that I can send one email to all in that smart group?

Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has an Add Addresses script that may or may not do what you’re looking for.

  • Smart mailbox from group contacts

I need to create a smart mailbox from a group in my address book but i have not found a way to do it.. the only way i see is adding each contact separately. can any one please help w/ these
    Thanks in advanced

Yes, I realise that, but it was a rhetorical request intended to flag up what I perceive as a glaring omission in Apple's email application. Filtered mail -- whether by rules or by Smart boxes -- is handled differently (in terms of condition choices) depending on whether the message is an outgoing one or an incoming one, and I can't understand why that should be.
If there is a logical reason for it then I would like to know what it is, is all.

  • "Any Recipient" NOT WORKING in Smart Mailboxes

I have a smart mailbox set up with a single rule: "any recipient does not contain markmal." Maybe I'm completely misunderstanding this, but shouldn't that mean that any message that contains "markmal" in any part of any recipient's address — whether on the to:, cc:, or bcc: line — should be filtered OUT of this mailbox?
This is not what happens, and i get messages with addresses that include "markmal" in each of those three recipient types in this so-called "smart" folder.
am i misunderstanding what smart mailboxes do?
    thanks.

Not so much misunderstanding what smart mailboxes do as misunderstanding what some of the pulldown rule combinations mean.
The rule "any recipient does not contain X" is not the inverse of "any recipient contains X" as you intend. Rather, it is the inverse of "every recipient contains X" (not that there is an "every recipient" rule type).
The only messages that would be excluded from your smart mailbox are those addressed ONLY to markmal. Messages with any other recipient would be included, no matter whether there is also a markmal recipient or not.
The rule syntax supplied by the pulldowns is not complete enough to accomplish what you want, I believe.

  • Smart Mailboxes with "Any Recipient" condition

    Hi there,
I am interested in messages which are "To:" addresses which begins with "curtis".
This doesn't work: Any Recipient -> Begins with -> curtis
But this does: Any Recipient -> Contains -> curtis
I don't understand the behavior of "Begins with" when used with the Any Recipient condition. Is there a way to produce the result I'm looking for, without also catching foocurtisbar?
    Curtis

Hmmm. I just created a new smart mailbox, set the condition to any recipient begins with austin - as far as I can see it has found all the messages I would expect.
What aspect doesn't work for you?

  • Mail:  ANY doesn't work in smart mailboxes or rules?

I want to create a smart mailbox that will copy and archive  all messages to/from a particular recipient and e-mails to/from others about the subject of most of the conversation with that recipient.  I want the archiving to happen as they arrive in my inboxes and not automatically remove them from the servers--some I still need on the servers to access from multiple locations/machines.
But I can't even get to the archiving issue:  the smart mailbox that says 'contains ANY message' meeting these rules:
    contains recipient1
    contains subject2
always has fewer messages than one that simply 'contains recipient1' so the ANY condition, that in boolean terms should be an OR combination, appears to functionally act as an AND.
When I tried to create a smart mailbox folder to contain two mailboxes, one for contains name1 and one for contains subject2, each of which separately works fine, clicking the smart mailbox folder containing both leaves the window empty, so I can't see the messages name1 and subject2 interlaced in the date sent order or any other.  I just get one group or the other by clicking the submailboxes.
And trying to bypass the problem using rules doesn't work either--the 'any' command is as dysfunctional there as it is in the smart mailbox dialog.  I can manually search for the relevant terms (recipient1 and  subject2) and option+drag them to a mailbox for archiving, but this results in many duplications, especially if repeated over time, not a happy result.
Some searching here and googling suggests that the ANY command is problematic in this OS for a lot of people, but is there a known fix?  Or a better way to create a 'smart' archive to do what I want?

Okay, I think I understand better now.  So I just ran a test, by creating the following rule:
I specifically chose an address (obviously not the one shown) that I had a message from in my Inbox, and a word that was present in the subject line of several messages in my Inbox.  When I ran this rule on my Inbox, it copied exactly the messages I would have expected into the test mailbox.  Are you seeing different behavior with the same rule, or is your rule constructed differently?
If the difficulty is with running the rule, note that (as I said earlier) rules only run automatically on unread incoming messages.  It won't run automatically on existing messages or on messages on an IMAP mail server that you have read on another device using (in which case they will have been marked as read).  If you need to run this in such conditions, you'll have to either run the rule manually or run it via an AppleScript or something similar that is somehow (via something other than Mail) made to execute at certain times/intervals or under certain conditions.
And you're correct, a smart mailbox would be totally inappropriate for what you're trying to do!  It would behave exactly as you guessed.

  • How to get accurate count of contents of smart mailbox?

I have a smart mailbox defined as "sender is a member of a group x" and "date received is within last 2 days." When I click on it, Mail indicates "(8 messages)" -- but there are only 7 listed. I've tried the sqlite3 ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index vacuum command in Terminal, I've rebuilt the individual mailboxes making up this count (and the smart mailbox itself) and I even deleted the smart mailbox itself and recreated it, to no avail.
Any other suggestions for getting a correct count?

Is it possible that mysterious 8th message is one you deleted, but is still registering as being there, even though you can't see it? Have you tried enabling the View > Show Deleted Messages command to see if it appears then?
If that command shows you nothing, then you can completely rebuild your Mail index to see if that solves your problem:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Mail and remove (+*do not delete yet*+) the Envelope Index file to the Desktop.
    3. Restart Mail and let it import your existing mailboxes. When that's done, your index will be brand new and with any luck that message should no longer show up in a count. Now you can delete the Envelope Index file you removed previously.

  • How do I get my old smart mailboxes back?, annoyingly disappeared after an software upgrade overnight!

My smart mailboxes with a lot of important info have disappeared following a software update, im not terribly computer literate so a step by step answer would be enormously helpful!

Could you give some examples of a smart folder you might have? It sounds like you had a lot.
    To get you started...
VIPs are smart folders for a person.  It's a quick option to view the emails from a person.
If you click on a persons's name in an email you'll see a down arrow. Select Add to VIP.
You can put contacts in groups. For example, friends, family, classmates, team members etc.  Groups are created in Contacts.app.
Create a smart folder for a group:
Sender is member of group > family
Date Received is Today/This Week (example of additional criteria)
My favorite smart folder is named Unread Today.
    Message is unread
    Date Received is > Today
Tip: Once you create a smart folder, take a screen shot so you can recreate it in the future. I also recommend that you setup Time Machine backups.
    Command-Shift-3 takes the entire screen
Command-Shift-4 takes a portion of the screen. <--use this one
    Hope this helps!

  • Smart mailboxes not being to smart

I created a group in my address book with all my family in it. I then set up a smart mailbox with one rule ....."Sender is a member of a group then I chose family...as that is the name of the group. but none I repeat none of the e-mails from any of the people listed in that group are going into that smart mailbox?!? Am I missing something or does the "smart-mail box" have a not so smart disposition? Then again it could be the user

I tried this at home last night and got the same result you did ... a complete failure of any messages to show up.
However, just now on my work machine, it performs as expected.
The OS and all other software on both machines is completely up to date and there's very little difference in how Tiger arrived to be on both machines.
That leaves me with two suggested ideas:
    1) create a new address book group and see if the problem resolves
    2) create a new user account and then create address book entries and e-mail access from the new user account to see if that solves the issue. Be careful that the e-mail account in this new user doesn't remove the mail from the server when you download it or you won't be able to get it in you main user account.

  • Smart Mailboxes Recognizing BCC

    Hello All,
I hope that somebody can help us.
We are trying to set up some smart mailboxes for members of a particular group at school. For each person we are wanting to see all the mail that has been sent to them and received from them.
Mails to the entire group are sent as BCC due to policy, and we would like the recipients of those mails to also be recognized by the smart mailbox rule and for a copy of that mail to be thus included in the smart mailbox for them.
It seems that the 'Any recipient' field and even the 'entire message' field do not recognize the contents of the BCC line.
Is this the case? and if so is there a way around this?
    best regards
    G and P

I can see who I BCC'ed in my mail messages that I have sent. So, while it may be true that BCC is gone from incoming email, it is there for sent email.
I found this thread because I am looking to make a smart mailbox on mail I've sent based on the BCC field.

  • Is there a way to create a Smart Mailbox that shows Sent emails only?

    Hi there,
I am trying to find a way to create a smart mailbox that only shows emails I have sent.
If I receive 20 emails today, 10 yesterday say, I have a Smart MB where I have set up emails received today, another SMB for emails received yesterday and another SMB for emails I've received in the past week. I can very easily see what has come in during the last few days or whatever.
What I also have are rules that move all emails received and sent to specific folders. The idea is that I will have nothing in my INBOX. The problem is that although it's easy to set up views to see what emails I've received on any day using the calendar option, I can't see a way of doing this to see what emails I've sent.
So, if I receive 20 emails today and I replied to 3 of them, those 3 will get sent to whatever folder I've allocated for them - I put all emails TO/FROM in one folder for each email address. This way I don't have 2 email folders TO and SENT for each recipient.
My problem is that I want to ONLY look at what I've sent today or maybe yesterday etc. if I can set things up the same way as receiving emails, But I can't seem to do this.
Seems strange that there are options to see filter out what's coming in but not what is being sent! But if there's a way to do this, it would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Maz

Mail creates a Sent mail folder automatically when you set up an account. All your sent mails are kept there. You configure how it saves your sent mail here:
You should see the mailbox in Mail's sidebar:
