Reclaiming Q Partition Space

At the end of a backup and restore to a new internal HDD , I had the option to create factory media or reclaim the space occupied by the Q partition - I chose to create factory media, got a message that it didn't exist, but now I'm unable to reclaim .
Do i now need to format both the Q and C partitions and start the restore process over again ?

Hi Vost,
In Safe Mode look under C:\RRbackups. The last few post in the proceeding link explains detailed procedure:- http://www.thinkpads.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=21651
Hope it helps.

  • Bootcamp will no longer boot after deleting partition #3 of my new Mac Mini.  What happened?  Was it the way I tried to reclaim the HDD space for Mac?

Here's my dilemma.  I have a new Mac Mini - a week old.  I installed Windows 7 on it using Mac's Bootcamp assistant.  I then set up and configured my Windows 7 world and everything worked fine.  No issues logging in between Lion or Win7 via the restart/option key procedure.  Well, yesterday I split my Mac HD partition one more time to create a third partition (was created as an "extra", e.g. possible future partition for another operating system).  After creating it, I then decided that I didn't really need it.  So I deleted it in Disk Utility and attempted to drag the Mac HD partition line downward so as to "fill in the gap" and reclaim the lost hardrive space.  It seemed as if I could reclaim about 1 gig or so, but I figured...oh well.
Well, the Mac HD partition seems to work just fine, but now I've noticed that I can't get into the Bootcamp partition anymore.  It wont boot.  If I try to verify the partition [doesn't even give me "repair" as an option), then it fails and gives me the following error message: "verify volume failed.  invalid request."  When I go to the Startup Disk option in my System Preferences section, it displays the bootcamp partition as a folder and not as a drive anymore.
I'm assuming that I messed up some permissions or lost some vital links during my attempted resizing/reclaiming of harddrive space.  How do I fix this without having to reload either all of my Mac info or all or my Win7 info?  I'd hate to consider the last two days of my life loading this crap up a complete loss.
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for checking in, BDAQua.
    Problem solved.
In the docs that came with my Powerlogix accelerator card, I found this sentence buried:
"If you reset the PRAM, the NVRAM code for OS9 compatibility is cleared, so you will have to boot from the Firmawre Update CD and perform this process again in order to boot in OS9."
The "process" it's referring to is the process of setting up the NVRAM for booting into OS9 from the CD.
Fortunately, I was able to find the disk, and it worked as expected. I can now, once again boot into OS9.
Conclusion: My (unadvised) attempt to load Leopard on this old machine apparently reset the PRAM on the accelerator card and cleared the NVRAM code for OS9 boot. Although I did attempt to reset the NVRAM via Open Firmware, it did not reset it on the accelerator card.
So, thank you BDAQua, for your "Ah yes" . . . that's all I needed to steer me in the right direction.

  • How do I reclaim the unused space after a huge data delete- very urgent

    Hello all,
How do I reclaim the unused space after a huge data delete?
alter table "ODB"."BLOB_TABLE" shrink space; This couldn't execute with ora 10662 error. Could you please help

    'Shrink space' has requirements:
    shrink_clause
The shrink clause lets you manually shrink space in a table, index-organized table or its overflow segment, index, partition, subpartition, LOB segment, materialized view, or materialized view log. This clause is valid only for segments in tablespaces with automatic segment management. By default, Oracle Database compacts the segment, adjusts the high water mark, and releases the recuperated space immediately.
Compacting the segment requires row movement. Therefore, you must enable row movement for the object you want to shrink before specifying this clause. Further, if your application has any rowid-based triggers, you should disable them before issuing this clause.

  • WARNING: Insufficient disk partition space.

im trying to install J2EE SDK on a SunBlade 150 with Solaris 8. I get the following error message during the drivespace check:
WARNNG: Insufficient disk partition space to install the items selected
Im trying to install it in /opt/SUNWappserver/
I have installed the recommended patch cluster for Solaris 8, so all of my patches are up to date. According to df -k, I have about 4.5 gigs left on that partition, so space is not the issue. I figured it must be a bug with the release.
Does anyone know the fix for this?

sure.....heres the info, sorry for the late reply, and thanks again for all of your help:

  • How can I increase the C partition space?

Hello! I have an internal hard drive used on my Windows 7computer and also has divided it into four partitions, C, D, E and F. Under Disk Management, I was able to shrink the E partition well. But when I went to extend the C partition
space there, it just didn’t let me do that (that “Extend” option just cannot be chosen). How do I extend my C partition space successfully?

    Hi,
To use the "Extend Volum" option, you need a unallocated space available as a the snapshot below:
    Here's a guide for reference
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/mghazai/archive/2009/02/24/extend-system-boot-volume-on-windows-server-2008-windows-vista-win7-beta.aspx
we should shrink the neighboring partition to release unallocated space
if error persists, please paste the GUI snapshot of your disk management here for further analysis.

VenkataNumber of rows does not exactly mean that your segment size should be small. The row size can actually be that big.
Here is a script that you can use to get a grip of the HWM of the segment:

  • After i empty trash (the secure empty doesn't work either), the system does not reclaim the free space.

After i empty trash (the secure empty doesn't work either), the system does not reclaim the free space.
I need to run the erase free space option from the disk utility every time...which is really annoying and time consuming.
Any ideas how to solve this?
    Thanks in advance =)

There is a thing in iPhoto whereby the first time you delete a photo it asks if you want to delete or just remove from the album, something like that.  Unfortunately it is one of these things with a "don't ask me again" checkbox.  Now, "deleting" photos only removes them from the album they are in.  To actually trash them I must then go to "all photos" and find them, to send them to the trash.   To help find them, what I do is rename them zzz or something, so sorting them will get them to the bottom of my collection.  Just maybe your photos are still lurking around?

  • Reclaim Hard drive space?

Six months ago, I upgraded the hard drive in my iMac G4 700mhz, from 40 to 160GB. I was running OS 10.2.8, and after formatting (initializing)the new drive, the iMac recognized only 120 of the 160 GB, which I read was a limitation of this iMac model. Recently, I upgraded the OS from 10.2 to 10.4.11. The computer now sees the entire 160GB, but only 120 is available to the iMac's system. Is there a way to reclaim this 40GB without reformatting the hard drive?

You could get a better result from using the newer Disk Utility in the newer
OS X version, since its tools are better and they'd be better suited for setup
and preparation of a hard disk drive for the later OS X system you have.
Any previous system folders created by upgrade installations or archive &
installs could be still on the hard disk drive; and if they are, trash them.
There also may be some hidden folders or other bulk of some kind you
can't see which could be found by using a utility such as 'What Size?'
If there are a pile of other system caches and older parts somehow still
on the hard disk drive, or blocks of occupied space that are not able to
be cleared in a conventional sense of the system being able to overwrite
them once tagged as trash, you may have to consider using the later
boot installer's Disk Utility optional tools to zero-overwrite the drive and
reformat it. And if you still require OS 9 and your computer dual-boots,
then be sure to have OS X install OS9 Drivers. You can run Classic 9
without OS9 Drivers, since the older system folder would not be called
on to boot the computer in that case. That's an option, if you need it.
Third party disk utilities can sometimes help a system; these often
apply in kind to whatever OS X version your computer is running,
so if you have a latest version utility, it may not be suitable for some
older Jaguar, Panther, or perhaps not even Tiger. Compatibility is an
important requirement, otherwise strange issues will likely result.
These third-party utilities are often retail; some are on a boot volume
and others may run partially from some space on the computer HDD.
There may be a problem in how the formatted hard disk drive directory
sees the space or used content in the hard disk drive; so if you have
no utility which can rebuild a directory for the system installed, then to
consider a base or root cure is about it. The booted installer's Disk Utility
and option to overwrite all content, reformat, and reinstall everything
from scratch is one painstakingly longer process. Or clone the existing
system to a prepared externally enclosed hard disk drive, making a
    bootable clone so it can work again once it gets cloned back into the Mac;
and then attack the questionable HDD within the computer with Disk Utility.
A good bootable backup clone of the computer's drive content is solid advice.
Getting there is best done when despair is not ruling the moment and when
you can exercise options to be sure the clone is a good one, and the hardware
acquired to make and use one, is the correct type and kind for the job.
{And to partition the computer's hard disk drive so the boot volume in it has
perhaps half of the space should resolve any limits imposed by the hardware
of the computer on readability of an internal hard disk drive. That way, any
portion over the limit could be accessed as though it were another internal HD.
Some OS X systems and some third-party utilities may be able to reformat
without damaging existing content; but don't bet on it. You may find a reformat
    to be a cure, but it may also cost you in lost data - unless you make a backup.}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Unable to delete a disk image and reclaim hard drive space.

I created a  disk image on which to store some stuff, and I now want to get rid of the disk image (which is 115 gigs of storage) and reclaim the hard drive space. I'm running Mac OS X 10.8.3. I have been unable to delete it through disk utility. I can only unmount it or mount it, but the storage space remains with it. I can't get rid of it through the downloads folder either, but if I find it in "volumes" via spotlight, and try to put it in the trash, it tells me "ENN.dmg cannot be thrown away because it can't be deleted." I tried using root user to delete the item and it told me I could not because it belongs to another person. My permissions are "read and write." I've searched all sorts of forums. Can anyone help? Thanks!

What error are you getting? Are you dragging and dropping on the trash can or right clicking and selecting "Move to Trash"?
Right click on the image file and select get info. What are the permissions set to.
Can you move or copy it to another folder or a external drive and if you can copy it can you delete the copy?

  • How to Reclaim Hard Drive Space

    Hi there,
I have deleted several GB of messages, folder by folder from Entourage as I have the complete set in Mail. However, I had restarted my iMac and there seems to be too small amount of hard drive space available after this delete has been completed. I don't see anything left in the Entourage folders, nor in the Trash on the dock. So, where else can I check to reclaim the hard drive space? I'm currently showing 140 GB and there should be around 155 GB free.
    Advice much appreciated. Thank you!
    Lynn

  • Problems with Winclone/Partition space

hello, I have a MBpro 08 edition and have a partitioned disk that is running XP. It is running really low on space, so I downloaded Winclone and made an image of the partition. The problem is that whenever I restore the image to the new partition which I have made 25 gigs, XP says that I still am low on disk space. It seems like Winclone is just restoring to my old partition of 10 Gigs, which is not enough space. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance for taking the time to look into this.....

    Stefan,
    Hello, thanks for your assistance.
I think I have read about this in some other posts. I am running a cloned version of the original XP version - so I can still use XP it is just running really low on space - if that makes sense?
Yep, makes sense: your XP is still up an running but running out of disk space
So when I convert to the NTFS file system do I open my XP partition and then follow the instruction on your link and then restart? After that I am assuming that I clown the converted NTFS version and then restore it?
Yes, the convert command has to be used while running Windows. You will get the following mesage when running convert
"Convert cannot gain exclusive access to the drive letter drive, so it cannot convert it now. Would you like to schedule it to be converted the next time the system restarts? <Y/N>", since convert needs exclusive access to your Windows partition.
Answer (Y) for yes and reboot to Windows so that the convert process can start.
Once finished a second reboot to Windows might be a good idea.
After the conversion to NTFS was successful you can use WInClone again to backup the Windows partition and when you restore this backup you can use the resize function of WinClone.

  • Can't Reacquire Bootcamp Partition Space

I wanted to delete Windows, so I tried deleting its partition via Boot Camp Assistant, and surprisingly enough it crashed in error.
I then launched Disk Utility and tried to reacquire the now-unpartitioned space by stretching the "Macintosh SSD" partition over it, and that failed, too. Here's a screenshot of the error I'm getting:
I also tried repartitioning the unallocated space into a new MS-DOS (FAT) partition, which did work, but not for using it for a new Windows installation with Boot Camp.
I'm pretty much out of ideas, and I'd very much like the space back without having to reinstall OS X from scratch, if possible.

Well, I lost about a month or so of updates and such, but at least i got my missing gigs back.
On a sidenote, a linux-ninja friend of mine recommended this handy little tool, which, weren't it too late, I'm pretty sure would've saved me a lot of trouble: http://gparted.org/
