Recmd for low cost, multi point temp logging

Can someone recommend the best, low cost way to monitor temp at 16
pts. We are doing qualifiation tests of an oven used in an bio tech
research application. But we are a startup and I need to stretch my
capital budget as much as possible. Here are the details:
1. type k theromocouople
2. 40-150F temp range
3. 16 tc input channels
4. scan rate = 1 reading / minute
5. log period = 60 hrs
I used National Instruments Field Point modules about 2 yrs ago for
this since they were the cheapest approach I found for the signal
condtioning since a 8 channels of type K tc inputs, the TC120 module,
cost $350.
Is there a better approach I should look at? I do not have to work
with LV or NI hw if there is a better approach.
Thanks in adv
ance for your advice,

I don't remember where I got them from but I had a similar project a
few years ago and found that thermistors are a lot cheaper (and
slightly less accurate) than thermocouples. get an AtoD card for a pc
and you are pretty much in buisness. You'll need some resistors too
for voltage dividers. You need to watch what voltage you put across
them so you don't get significant internal heating. The suppliers
have the schematics and other usefull info. Thermistors don't give
you a linear reaction, so you need to use a table, graph, or an
emperical equation get actual temps. You will also want to calibrate
all of them as there will be some variance between sensors (even if
they were perfect the resistors you use along with them will vary)
rather than try to get them all dead nuts on with li
ttle trimpots just
figure a fudge factor for each sensor for when you calculate back the
actual temps. I'd try them all in ice water and boiling water, just
seal them in plastidip or something.before immersing them.

  • Solution for Low-Cost Single-Axis Motion Control?

    Hello,
I am currently researching the options that NI has available for low-cost linear actuators.  I am looking to replace the functionality of a pneumatic solenoid with a linear actuator.  I would like to create a system that uses strictly NI hardware and software.  The system should be capable of the following:
Push an object with a maximum force of 500LB
    Max stroke of 1 foot
Ability to monitor and control the position of cylinder (how far to extend preset)
Ability to stop/reverse the travel at any point along the stroke
Ability to control the velocity of the cylinder (preset)
The parameters for velocity and stroke length (0-12") would be set before the actuator begins to move, hopefully from a LabVIEW operator interface.  These would not be changed on the fly.  Any reccomendations would be welcome!
    Thanks

I suggest first deciding what motor you want to use.  After you choose a motor, you can choose a drive.
NI offers two drives - the MID-765x for servo motors and MID-760x for stepper. motors.  You can then connect the drive to an NI motion controller via a cable.  If the specifications of these NI drives (see manuals) are not compatible with your motor, you can use a 3rd party drive instead.  If you use a 3rd party drive, you will need to purchase a breakout box to connect an NI motion controller's signals to the 3rd party drive.  NI offers two breakout interfaces - the UMI-7764 for a screw terminal interface and the UMI-7774 for a D-sub interface.
The NI motion controllers that I would recommend are the 7330 (for stepper only), 7340 (stepper/servo), and the 7350 (stepper/servo).  The NI-Motion driver will allow you to command the motor to move to specified positions dynamically and monitor the current position.  You can also set velocity constraints or set the velocity directly.
You can find more information on all the NI hardware that I have mentioned on the NI Motion Hardware page.  This page lists features for the hardware and provides links to product pages (which contain links to the product manuals).

  • Looking for low cost CDN (content delivery network)

does anybody know of a cheap CDN for streaming video? I have looked at the premium CDN's on the Adobe treaming Server product page but they all seem to be very high cost. they do not provide pricing on their sites and you have to phone for  quote which screams expensive. I want to stream the occasional corporate seminar. Not millions of videos.

    Hey, Matt-
For Animate 1.5, yes, jQuery served off of Google's servers, but it is browser-independent.  Think of Google as just another webserver in this case.  For Animate CC, jQuery is served off of Google's servers and the Animate runtime is served off of Adobe's servers.  All of this should be available regardless of what browser you use.
Regarding the glow filter, CSS Filters are only supported by Webkit-based browsers.  Firefox is not a Webkit-based browser (whereas Chrome and Safari are), so filters are not supported.
    http://caniuse.com/#feat=css-filters
Remember that the down-level stage (where you would post your poster image) is only displayed in browsers that do not support Animate content in general (mostly IE6-8), not just support or not support particular features that Animate makes available to the user.  Most people have gotten around this by using transparent PNGs to fake the glow to make the animation as cross-browser as possible.  While this is unfortunate, there's not much we can do to get out and push the browser's implementation of this standard.
Hope that helps clarify things for you!

  • Choosing the right version for low-cost server

After a recent bump on my Internet speed, my ISP changed and my old ISP is providing only domain and email hosting (with no change in price). Thus I am entertaining building a simple server to handle these chores in-house. This is mainly for home use, with some small in-home business where we'd want to have web page and email, but limited streaming, etc. As I am trying to do this 'on the cheap' I'm looking at all options from installing up to 10.5.x on my old G4-upgraded B&W to buying a Mac Mini Server with 10.6. I would like to have the ability to spam filter all email coming into the domain before it gets to the users (family). Thoughts on the most economical solution? How far up the version list must I go to get better reliability? Initially we'll only need 6 users for now.
    Thanks in advance

That is probably the heviest that I could use and not wait for things to happen too long. But when I try XFCE on Virtual machines it does not seems that lighter then the Gnome 3. The only thing that I require is that I need Snapping windows manigment. So I can have 2 windows snaped left and right titled together on the same screen. If you tell me I can configure LXDE to do that I could probably go for it. But since Gnome 3 supports it on the fly I don't mind the excessive use of Ram. This machine is Work/Office /code related.
I would recommend using pure openbox (ie just the window manager); it has pre-set keybindings for snapping (openbox calls it "aerosnap" in the rc.xml config file) & is significantly lighter than LXDE. If you require something even faster, try one of the tiling window managers such as DWM or i3. Tilers are great once you get used to them

  • Low-cost OS X purchase option for obsolete iBooks?

I have some obsolete iBook G3 500 mhz / 10 gig / 128 meg / CD and iBook G3 700 mhz / 20 gig / 128 meg / Combo. I have been thinking about just throwing them in the trash. Someone tells me, no no don't do that, you can sell them on ebay for ... $50 each or so. Woo.
(Oh, and yes a bunch of them do have that powerful sweaty "iBook Stink" keyboard problem. I am not sure what the official Apple solution is. Anyone tried applying Old Spice to a keyboard?)
Well the only way they are going to be useful is to run at least a newer OS than the 9.2.2 / 10.2 they have. And If I have to pay $120 per license for 10.4, there's really no point starting this exercise and I should go back to the original plan, electronics waste disposal. Preferably with a sledgehammer.
Microsoft has a way to deal with this. They practically give away Windows XP and now Windows 7 for low-cost rebuilt PCs through their refurbisher program, and the licenses cost something like $5-10 per computer.
    Microsoft Refurbisher Program
    http://www.microsoft.com/refurbishedpcs/programs.aspx
Is there a refurbisher licensing program for cheap old licenses of OS X, from Apple? I am not finding anything.
But I went through this previously. I'm mainly just looking for an update.
I wrote to Steve directly a few years ago asking about free or low-cost OS X licenses for these obsolete Macs, and Apple responded with the name of an electronics recycler near me. (Really!) Once support ends in about 3-4 years, who cares? Apple sure doesn't. And besides, you should be buying "the next one", to stay all hip and cool and "with it", anyway.
Still looks like trashing them is the best option, as trying to sell them for $20 per machine with 9.2.2 / 10.2 is not worth my time to pack and ship them..

    Precisely.

No? Through forced obsolescence you are removing older computers from the market and obliging people to buy newer, so faster turnover and sales of newer (unless they decide that they give up on Macs).  Fast forward 5 years. Scenario where Apple sticks with their pattern of no longer selling old versions, nor will they be available on disc because it's all download.  How will you get hold of Lion 5 years from now to make a 2008 Mac functional in 2017?  I suspect the used Mac market will really be hit hard because our current means of updating older Macs by finding old discs on the used market will be gone.  Right now I can buy a 6 year old OS (Leopard) to make my 10 year old Quicksilver still pretty functional in 2012.  I am not sure we will be able to do the equivalent in a few years from now becuse we won't have a means of getting hold of the new system versions unless you buy one now and stick it on the shelf "just in case".
Only thing I can think of is maybe a Family Pack install Disc.
Technically those are for family use, not selling 5 computers to anybody on e-bay.  In that regard you'd be no better off with a family pack than a single installer.

  • Which is the best low-cost camera for my use?

Hi everyone. Been busy and off the forums for a while, but need your expertise once again.
I just found out that the Panasonic HVX-200p that's been on loan to me for 2 years has to be returned. Since I run a non-profit, I am thinking about asking my major donors to buy one for us. So, the question becomes which one? I own the CS4 MC, and you can see my other info in my profile.
I only do educational-type videos in an interview format against a green screen so far. I've been capturing direct to OnLocation via 1394 FireWire at 720p/60fps and editing in an HDV 720p/30 sequence. I sometimes do "man on the street" segments (capturing to OnLocation on laptop). I integrate numerous PSD graphics as educational slides, a lot of AE projects I get from videohive and customize, render, & import into PP, and motion backgrounds like Pond5's weekly free stock footage (much of this stuff gets resized, of course). I do some scoring and some SFX and export the audio to SB for touchup. I use a bunch of Lowes/Home Depot worklamps with fluorescent bulbs for lighting the subject and background. I key my backgrounds using PP/AE Dynamic Link. Oh, and I'll need a lapel mic and a tripod, too. I would prefer not to rule out shooting at 1080i/p at some point.
I export H.264 highlight clips which get uploaded to Vimeo and embedded in our website using prettyPhoto features. Ultimately, the finished PP project is exported as MPEG2-DVD, finished in Encore, burned via ImgBurn. If you want to see a good example, watch this http://vimeo.com/23346431. Caution: this is religious material. Be sure to repent before watching
So, there's not really much heavy lifting here. But when it comes to what is the minimum I need with the options of capture formats, etc., I'm clueless. I've read about problems with AVCHD, and although low-cost, is it really a problem for what I do? I trust this forum more than online reviews, and I'd appreciate recommendations of specific models and where to buy, if possible. Also, what about used cameras? Please remember, the budget is tight.
All suggestions and questions are welcome and very much appreciated.
    Paul

Actually, two things surprise me in your statement and one is simply incorrect:
As for Broadcast quality..... a little station called CNN - you might have heard about them bought 250 of them from Panasonic about a year ago.
First, that CNN would buy JVC cameras not from JVC, but from Panasonic.
Second, there are no JVC cameras on the BBC approved list at all, see http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/site/BBC_Approved_HD_Cameras.pdf and the only affordable ones on the list in the handheld category are the Canon XF300/305. Maybe that is the reason the BBC bought 350 of these. Even the Sony XDCAM EX is only accepted in combination with a 50 Mb disk drive, not in the native 35 Mb format.
The BBC approved list is a list that most broadcasters adhere to, including CNN, Discovery, ARD and NGC.
The JVC GY-HD100U is definitely not acceptable for HD, and in no way HD broadcast ready. But that CNN bought that number of these cameras is probably caused by the fact that they think these deliver better quality than regular phones. And it does not use XDCAM, but a very simple HDV codec, limited to 1280 x 720 resolution. See http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/specs.jsp?model_id=MDL101539&feature_id=03
This simply means that the Canon codec is very acceptable to the BBC for HD programs. The XF100 uses the same codec, but is only a single sensor camera and for that reason alone not approved by the BBC.
Paul, if you can live with the limitations of a single sensor camera - and given your intended purposes, I think you can - the JVC does not even come close and the XF100 material will be hardly worse than the XF300/305. To the untrained eye the results are almost the same.

  • Best Low Cost Camcorder for FCP?

I'm going to take back a Samsung D453 camcorder because it has time code breaks during capture. Does anyone have any recommendations for a low cost DV camcorder that is supported by Final Cut Pro?

Actually, recording timecode on a tape might have been a good idea with analog crash recording, but it does not make sense on DV camcorders. If nothing else you end up recording twice on the tape which increases wear on the camera heads and doesn't do much for the tape either.
As an alternative to blacking tapes, simply record the first 30 seconds or so of the tape without images. Use a bars and tone if the camera can generate one. Otherwise use the FCP version. This gives you enough preroll area for capturing all material after this point.
Once into the tape, just make sure when you stop recording, the heads are in a position that will allow them to pick up the timecode and continue on. As long as you do not rewind and review the footage you are good to go. If you must rewind & review, stop the play back a few seconds short of the end of the previous shot.
So to recap. Generate bars and tone for the first 30 seconds of the tape then give your self enough preroll on each shot as well as an additional few seconds at the end of each shot.
If you must review a shot/scene in camera, stop the tape before the end of the scene so the camera can pick up the timecode as it moves on.
    Good luck.

  • HT1420 How can I change my Apple ID email for an account with 100s of purchases to the email address I have that (at some point) I logged into gamecenter and "claimed" it as another person?

    ^---topic
I have used a @yahoo email address for 10 years as my apple ID when purchasing things.  The biggest problem being, that at some point, yahoo decided to delete the email account and I can't use it.  I would like to use my email addresses that I actually use (@me, @gmail), but I guess I used them at some point to log into gamecenter or some other useless apple thing. I know you can change the email associated with your account, but apple is showing that my emails are already in use, so I can't use them for this purpose.

Change the email you used in "gamecenter or some other useless apple thing" then change your AppleID.

  • Good low-cost widescreen monitor for one-screen editing?

Hello, I'm on a tight budget, looking for a widescreen monitor that is a good blend of low-cost but good quality (if possible!).
I will be doing all my work off this single monitor. I will unfortunately NOT be able to have a dual-monitor setup, nor have an external reference monitor. I will be editing HDV footage.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

It is a PVA screen with dual DVI and a D-sub connector.
I use three of them and they give me a good BFTB, "Bang-for-the-Buck".
If you consider the various panels in use, they go from low to high in quality, TN >> PVA >> IPS.

**after receiving iphone6 and signing 2 year contract, negotiated for a change in plan with lower cost and discount... not seen on october bill as promised..totally unable to obtain help on phone to verizon. thanks

Thanks for the response. I had the 65 advantage plan for 2 years. Service rep at Verizon store assisted me when I activated my new iPhone 6. She noted that over the 2 years i had used only a few minutes of talk, one to 2 texts per month ( at a fee of $. 20 each ) and a minuscule amount of data... and that the phone was for emergency contact to me from my disabled invalid wife only. She searched and found a discount special plan for a savings of  $15.00 per month with a final monthly fee before taxes of $45 and not $59 per month to start on Oct 1st. It does not have a name to the plan just that it carries this special discount. That is all I can tell you. Thanks for the assistance. Await your reply. Thanks

  • Define upper/lower limits for shipment cost condition

    Hi people, help please!
How can I define upper/lower limit for shipment cost conditions?.
The transaction TK11 has the functionality for upper/lower limits, but I can't find how to define it in customizing.
I follow the path Logistic Execution>Transportation>Pricing>Pricing Control>Define Condition Types, but is not like the transaction for pricing elements in condition types for sales.
    How can I do it?
    Regards.

The problem is on the class condition import limits.
I can’t customize upper and lower prices for the shipment cost class condition and i cant find how define it or what else can I do.
The customizing transaction for shipment cost lass condition is not like sales price class condition, please look this:
For the shipment cost class condition follow the path SPRO>Logistic Execution>Transportation>Shipment Cost>Pricing>Pricing Control>Define Condition Types.
For the sales price class condition follow the path SPRO>Sales and Distribution>Basic Function>Pricing>Pricing Control>Define Condition Types, and take a look in Define upper/lower limits for conditions.
So then, when I go to functional transaction VK11 for the sales price condition y can’t assign an import out of the limits defined. I need the same for shipment cost condition, transaction TK11, but I can’t find where define the limits, as result, user can load any import without limits.
I hope the explanation is useful.
