Recognising Secure Websites

Hi, I just had a question about how to recognise secure websites. I just received an advisory from Citibank explaining that secure sites will be preceded by https:// and that in IE there would appear a padlock in the URL box. Also, the URL box would be highlighted in green for secure sites and red for insecure sites. In checking my regular websites (BBC, ESPN, FB, etc), I find that all of them are http:// not https://. Is that potentially a problem? And does Safari have a way of indicating what type of site you're visiting? I checked in Safari preferences and I don't find anything under the security tab. Just a last question, out of curiosity, what defines http sites as opposed to https sites? Cheers.

its very simple
the whole thing is if the url has https it is more secure as it uses tunneling, .501 certificate.
(https is used for account maintenance or sites which you are giving passwords, banking eg.Citibank and secure things)
while http is used for normal websites and nothing is wrong with it
and the one thing you have to consider is that the websites you are entering passwords or banking should be https. if not, dont enter passwords. your fb wall may be http. but when you enter the sign in page, you have to notice that if the website should be https.

  • I just upgraded to Firefox 5.0.1 and since the "lock" icon never appears when accessing secure websites, where should I look for it?

I just recently upgraded to Firefox 5.0.1 and now the "lock" icon doesn't appear anywhere (I can find) when accessing secure websites. I haven't seen it once. It used to appear in the lower right corner of the screen. I also have Norton Internet Security.

Padlock is no longer part of Firefox; it was removed beginning in Firefox 4. The padlock shows that there is a secure connection but does not supply additional information. You could have made a typographical error and still have been connected to a secure connection. The padlock was replaced in Firefox 3 with the Site Identity Button. safari, chrome and firefox cannot verify identity of secure websites after upgrading to 10.7.4,  apple engineers have tried multiple things including operating system with no success

There are several threads about this problem, most notably one called 'Invalid Certificates' is over 4 pages long.  Many of us have experienced difficulty connecting to banking and other secure sites.  On my Macbook Pro, I cannot get to my banking site with any browser, however I can get there on my iMac using Safari, but get the 'Invalid Certificate' notice with FF and Chrome.  The problem started after the installation of 10.7.4.  I have sent a message to Apple--they will be dismayed to hear that I cannot complete an order at their online store!

  • I cannot connect to secure websites! How do I fix it?

I was going to do some homework on Google Docs, and the login page would not load! It would simply try to connect for a while, then time out.
After some experimenting, I noticed this happened with all secure web pages (https://), and that non-secure websites (http://) loaded fine. This happens in all browers. I tested Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.
Now, this only happens on my user account. This does not happen on my moms account, which I am currently on.
We initially thought it was an issue with the parental controls, so we completely disabled them. But the problem still persists. I am very confused and would love some help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Creating a PDF from a  Secure Website (entire site)

I am having trouble creating a PDF from a website that requires a login and password. I have full access to the secure website through a subscription and wanted to print certain levels (or even be able to print the whole site that I can access) but when I run the Create function it only prints the publicly-accessible portions of the site. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks.

Unfortunately that has not helped. When I try to print from IE, I can only print the page I am on, not the entire path or the entire website. The only way I can find to print more than the single page is to go Acrobat, but that brings me back to my original problem -- when I run it through Acrobat only the public (not the private or secured) pages are created into a PDF. I have also searched the boards and have found nothing. Any additional help would be appreciated.

  • Creating a PDF from a secure website

I am attempting to create a PDF from a page within a secure website, which is successful, however the content on the page turns into random symbols.  Could this be due to encryption on the site ?

I don't think so. It is either a problem of the browser to hand the page in over to the printer or of Acrobat, since the browser displays the page correctly, I suppose.
You have three ways to create the PDF:
    1. Open the URL in the browser, switch to print preview (IE can do best) and check if OK, then print with Adobe Printer.
    2. Open URL in Acrobat and convert to PDF.
    3. Save the page to disk (*.mht) and then convert.
    Any of this should work.

  • Where's the secure HTTP connection symbol? It used to be at the bottom right corner whenever there was a secure website connection

Whenever I made connection with a secure website, the HTTPS secure symbol would show up at the bottom right corner, indicating how strong the https connection was. Sometimes it would be a solid symbol; other times when the website wasn't as secure, it would show up with a line through it. Simple question, but I don't see it anymore and it is helpful to know how strong the security is on certain websites.
    Thank you.

In Firefox 4 you no longer have the Status bar that showed the padlock in previous Firefox versions.
You can click the "Site Identity Button" on the left end of the location bar to see the padlock.<br />
    See: [[Site Identity Button]]
A click on the "More Information" button will show details about the connection.<br />
The background color of the "Site Identity Button" on the left end of the location bar will change color (blue or green) and show the domain in case of a secure https connection.
    * Hover the Site Identity Button then to see "Verified by xxxx"
    * Click the [[Site Identity Button]] on the left end of the location bar to see the padlock
    * Click the "More Information" button in that pop-up to see additional information about the connection.

  • How to GET data from external secure website?

We are trying to get data from a secure website. It is something like I try to get my bank statement online, where I have a user id and password to the secure website and try to get the data from XI.
Does anybody have any idea how we could do it? What adapter should be used.
I would really appreciate your help and award points.
    Thank,
    Arjun.

    Hi,
Depends on how u are connecting to the website and getting the data.
But you can do this using HTTP/Java Proxies. You can use HTTP if you are connecting via a URL. thats the most standard procedure.

  • Cannot download secure websites after upgrading. (had to register using IE)

I was having a lot of problems with secure websites, getting messages that secure connection failed. Finally got message to upgrade to latest version to solve the problem. Now I cannot access 'any secure website ( banking, credit card, store checkouts, etc.) The message shown is that connection was reset.

Firefox 10 and Thunderbird 10 both seem to behave differently with firewalls. It is a big advantage to have a firewall that will ask what to do if it has no rule to cover a situation. Mine asked me if Firefox was permitted to use port 443 (https).

  • Secure website not loading, help?

On Safari, I have tried to get on many secure websites but none of them work ect. facebook, google login, twitter. Someone told me there is a part of the system missing or removed... there was a bit of software to put it back but it was for windows and I have a apple. Does anyone have similar sofware for a mac or a different solution? Thanks in advance.

What exactly happens when you try to load these sites? All secure sites, or only some? Every time, or only sometimes?

  • Secure websites automatically opens Acrobat Prof 6

I am having a very unusual, yet very annoying problem with Acrobat Professional 6. After I updated Adobe Reader to version 8, Acrobat automatically launches every time I try to logon to two of my banking websites. When I type in my username and password on the banking site, Acrobat attempts to launch, but it gives me an error message which says: "There is a problem with Adobe Acrobat/Reader. Please exit and try again". When I click OK it gives me another error message: "The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a web browser. Please exit and try again." Everytime I click OK, it keeps repeating the error about 5 or 6 times in a row, until finally I get into my bank account. The thing is, I am not trying to view any PDF files, I just want to logon to my bank's website. This is extremely frustrating. I have tried uninstalling Acrobat Prof and Adobe Reader, but that does not help. I am running Vista and I know Acrobat 6 was not entirely compatible with Vista, but I have loaded the recent patch and it has worked fine on Vista for some time. Anyone have any idea what is causing this and have any solutions? Any advice will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

John, I read through the forum you referred me to and was surprised at how prevalent this issue was.
The good news is that I discovered a fix that worked for me:

I was previously running Reader 8 with Acrobat Prof 6 which was causing a conflict. I downloaded and installed Reader 9 and voila! No more opening Acrobat 6 when I try to login in to secure websites.
Angela, not sure if this will solve your issue, but it is certainly worth a try.
Thanks again for your help John.

  • Safari 8 not displaying lock icon for https secured websites

It seems that Safari 8 (installed with Yosemite) is not showing the lock icon for HTTPS websites.
I can't find a way to see the security certificates for secure websites.
I switched the “Show full website address” setting in Safari's Preferences, but nothing happened.
It's essential having this icon, or any way to tell if the site is secure or not.
I don't see any other option in the menus or anywhere else in Safari to see a sites certificates.

I'm not sure if Safari was updated since your question, but today the lock icon is in the address bar right next to the address
    This forum page shows:
Or, a non-Apple site, like google, just shows a grey lock like this:
