Recomend a software or method for making a help file

Do you have software or a good method for creating HELP files?

Hey aml1138,
Although National Instruments doesn't make any software that compiles Windows Help files (.chm or .hhp), there are a variety of help building programs available that are free as well as not. As far as free programs go, I have worked with Microsoft's HTML Help Workshop with success:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=00535334-c8a6-452f-9aa0-d597d16580cc&Displa...
However, if you're willing to shell out a few bucks for a program with a few more developers behind it and thus an increased ease of use, I have used FAR which was amazingly easy to use:  http://www.helpware.net/FAR/
I hope this helps!

What is the best sound conversion software for making apple sound files?

Depending on the file formats, you may not have to do any conversion.
The following shows what the native Quicktime Player Supports:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3775
and Quicktime Player is pretty much the core for all Apple app
    playback.
And if that doesn't cover it, there are other players, many of
which are free, that may cover what you need (WINAMP, VLC,
    Songbird etc.).

  • Installation of Blackberry Desktop Software fails: looking for Blackberry 8310.msi file

I cannot successfully install and use any version of the Blackberry Desktop software.  The problem started when I tried to install the desktop software on my new computer from a file I downloaded and stored on an external hard drive that had been attached to my old computer.  The install/uninstall programs lists Blackberry desktop 4.2.2.  It appeared to install correctly, but when I try to use it,  I get a message saying the program is trying to use a network resource that is not available, and looks in a temp directory for this "Blackberry 8310.msi" file.  There is also a program listed as "Blackberry v4.2.2 for the 8310 series wireless handheld"  When I try to uninstall it, it looks for that same .msi file.
I'd like to be able to sync my calendar with my phone.
Does anyone know what I should do?  I followed the clean uninstall directions, and that didn't make a difference.
    Thanks.

Xandrex, I am having the same problem (along with a few others).  I hate to sound like a novice, but how do I decompress into a folder other than temp?  Whether installing from the website, or saving to my desktop and then installing, it unzips without giving me a choice of where to put the files.
    Hello,
I don't have the install at home so my answer will be approximate. when you get the .exe file, it is in fact a zip file with a small launcher that knows it has to unzip the stuff in your temp file.
What you need is a decompression tool to decompress without that launcher. You can install 7Zip that is quite good for those things.
You can also try WinZIP or winRAR or winACE but those are not free-of-charge.
     http://www.7-zip.org/
Once you have installed this tool, just open 7Zip and browse to the .exe file. click on it, there should be a button "Extract". Choose a folder (somewhere on your Desktop for example) and wait for the decompression to finish.

  • How do I get a more modern look and feel for a compiled help file

I gather from reading various posts that there is no easy way
to generate a .chm file with a more modern look and feel (am I
right about this?). Are there no plug-ins available from Adobe that
will enable us to generate a help file that looks more modern?
I hesitate to move to flash help or something like that
because, of course, then the developers would have to hookup the
hundreds of dialog boxes we have in our product to the new files. I
also think that having one file is way easier to manage in terms of
getting updated help to the customers. What are online Help
developers generally delivering for apps where users are not
connected to the Internet except perhaps periodically while using
the software? I'm a writer (not a developer) so need soemthing that
    is easy to implement :-)
Thanks for your help. It is much appreciated.

To add to the advice already offered, you can apply a skin to
a CHM file which allows you to customise it. However as with most
things there are issues with this approach. You can read about this
    by downloading Rick Stone's excellent
    tips
'n tricks file. Just look in the index under "skins". Something
else you may want to look at is the beta of Adobe's
    AIR.

  • Need suggestions for proofreading online help files

I have created online help docs off an on for many years...
and have contemplated this issue several times and never come up
    with a really good answer.
Right now, the product manager is tryiing to proof one of the
online help files that i've COMPLETELY revamped and he's
complaining about the time this is taking and how difficult it is
because not all topics are in the TOC...
so I suppose i could regnerate the TOC and include EVERY
SINGLE topic... but I was wondering if anyone else had any other
suggestions for best practices when it comes to reviewing online
    help files.
THANKS for any input you might have.

Umm!. I have to admit that I find your approach of adding ALL
topics to the TOC works as well as any. However it does cause
problems where one or more popup topics appear in the same topic.
This causes a bit of uncertainty unless there is a clear indication
in the topic where a popup exists and an understanding of what TOC
topic to look at. What I tend to do is have a piece of text (e.g.
see popup titled xxxxx) which has a conditional build tag on it.
Then you include the build tag when you compile. I also tend to
have all the popups in a separate book in the TOC. You can then
easily remove all the popups from the finalised output. It means a
bit of tossing and turning between TOC chapters but seems to work
reasonably well. You could also produce two printed copies, one
containing the popups and another containing the main topic
content. Hope this helps solve your conumdrum.

  • RoboHelp for Word: The Help file opens a blank page

    Hello,
The Help files were working fine all these days. Today when i
click on the help on the webpage, it shows a blank page. I am using
RoboHelp for Word X5. I do not get any error message on the screen.
I can just see the progress bar just blinking and also our website
link which says transferring. None of my help files on the live
    applications are working
    Please help.
    Regards
    Chandrika

That link works for me in IE and FF so I think we can rule
    out your output.
If the problem is the call, anyone who accesses it via the
link you gave me should be OK and only see the problem when the
help is called via the application.
If the problem is the help, anyone will see it, no matter how
    they access the help.
I think both can be ruled out as they do not fit what you
describe. I would therefore be inclined to forget the RH8 idea.
    You said
"The clients are having the same problem again. It seems that
the help page keeps refreshing again and again in their systems.
When i checked it at office network, the systems that are connected
through proxy are giving the problem. The other systems which are
not connected through proxy are working fine."
This is consistent but it is something IT will have to
    resolve.

  • Best Method for Saving Data to File?

    Hi,
We're using labVIEW 2009 to acquire data from our instrument.  In the past we have used the "write to labview measurement file" express configuration tool to save data to a file. However we had some issues with our VI - occasionally we would lose data or column headers somewhat erratically and were never able to sort out the problem. We would like to rewrite our VI with the best possible solution.
Here's a summary of what we would like to do:
Save 30 variables at a rate of roughly 1 Hz. We would like one set of column headers per file so that the data can be easily imported into labVIEW with the variable names intact. We will be collecting data continuously, so we would like to divide the data into 3-4 files per day. Ideally, the program to start new files at the same times from day to day and the filename could be configured to include the date and time/file number.
I am hoping that users can provide a little feedback about methods that were most successful and reliable. From what I have read there are a few different ways to do this (express VI, tdms, "write to text file"). Any thoughts or relevant examples would be quite useful for us!
    Thanks for your help!

    Meg T wrote:
Is it correct to say that in your method, the indexing results in building up the data into one large array of data before saving it to the file with the column headers and filenames appended?  If we are writing data at 1Hz for 6 hours of time, will we run into an issue being able to store all the data?
Yes the indexing will build up one large array.  If this is a problem due to array size and memory, you will have to write more often.  You can write every second, that should not be a problem.  You should still write the column names to the file first, and have the append input set to False (or nothing wired in since the default is false).  This will create a new file with the headers only.  Then the data write has a True wired in so that the append takes place.  If running for 6 hours and gathering data once per second, your array will contain 36,006 rows of data.  I'm not sure if that would cause a memory problem or not.
    Meg T wrote:
it also seems difficult to incorporate headers into express VI if you are writing the data continuously as a part of a loop with the "append" option.
If you write the headers before the loop as I have shown, and use append inside the loop, you will not have problems.

'None of the selected updates could be installed. An unexpected error occurred.'
I can not seem to locate the Software Update log file to look for errors.
I'm currently at a loss of what to try next. Any advice would be appreciated.
I've tried installing it both from my own account and as root.

    FYI
/private/var/log/install.log shows no errors from latest update and /Library/Logs/Software Update.log does not exist.

  • Quickest method for reading and writing files

    Hi
I need help regarding file operations.(Reading and Writing). Currently I am using BufferedReader and BufferedWriter to read and write files. But the files (XML) are very huge files(from 30 -50 mb). This is slowing the application to a great extent. Is there any other approach to perform the above mentioned operations on XML files in a fast manner.
    Thank You
    Mansoor.

    Hi
Can u let me know how to use the java.nio pavkage for primitve data types(int,float..., boolean). I have tried it but found no success.
    Thank You

  • Need to build a central TOC for ~75 html help files

I'm using RH8 for HTML.  A year ago, I took our 75 Winhelp projects and converted them to 75 HTML projects in order to be compatible with Windows 7.  in Winhelp, the user selects Help and gets a central TOC from which to select the help for the individual project they want.  Now that we want to install the HTML, we need something similar.  we are not set up to have context sensitive help (it's not a browser interface).  How do I create a TOC as a separate HTML project from which all of the other projects can be called?

Best practices? That's all a ToC really is at heart anyway - a bunch of hyperlinks ;>)
You could build yourself a nice big parent/child merged projects scenario if you want the pain...

  • When bouncing- what's best method for smallest file size/highest quality?

I am in the process of embedding 3 mp3's into a PDF to submit as a portfolio. The PDF also has text, and two scores included, and with the 3 embedded mp3's it can't be more than 10mb.
So my question is: When bouncing a project out of Logic, what is the best method for getting the smallest file size, but retaining the best audio quality? And once it's out of Logic and it is an mp3 or other type of audio file, is there a best format for compressing it further, and still maintaining the relative quality?
I bounced out the three projects into wav's. Now I am using Switch for Mac to compress them down to smaller Mp3's. I basically need them to be about 3 mb each. Two of the recordings sound OK at that size, but they are just MIDI(one project is piano and string quartet, the other is just piano- all software instruments. The recording that combines MIDI and Audio and has more tracks (three audio tracks and 10 Midi/software instrument tracks)and sounds completely horrible if I get it under 5 mb as an mp3. The problem is that I need all three to equal around 9mb, but still sound good enough to submit as a portfolio for consideration into a Master's program.
If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Please be detailed in your response, because I am new to logic and I really need the step by step.
    Thank you...

The highest bitrate that falls within your limits. You'll have to calculate how big your MP3's can be, then choose the bitrate that keeps the size within your limit. The formula is simple: bitrate is the number of kilobits per second, so a 46 second stereo file at 96 kbps would be 96 x 46 = 4416 kbits / 8* = 552 kBytes or 0.552 MB. (*8 bits = 1 Byte)
So if you know the length of your tracks you can calculate what bitrate you need to keep it within 10 MB total.
I consider 128 kbps the lowest bearable bitrate for popsongs and other modern drumkit based music. Deterioration of sound quality is often directly related to the quality of the initial mix and the type of instruments used in it. Piano(-like) tones tend to sound watery pretty quickly at lower bitrates, as do crash and ride cymbals. But don't take my word for it, try it out.
And once it's out of Logic and it is an mp3 or other type of audio file, is there a best format for compressing it further, and still maintaining the relative quality?
You can only ZIP the whole thing after that, but that is just for transport. You'll have to unzip it again to use it. And no, you cannot compress an MP3 any further and still play it.

That is silly, you could have done that in Logic, which has one of the best MP3 encoders built in. And how good encoders are will especially come out at bitrates around or below 128, which you might be looking at.
I basically need them to be about 3 mb each.
So, one more scrap of info we need here: how long are those three pieces, exactly? I'll calculate the bitrate for you - but please bounce 'm directly out of Logic as MP3's. They will very probably sound better than your WAV-conversions made with Switch.

Length of the piece? And does the .Wav bounce you have sound OK?

  • Best method for keyframing with 3d camera 1 shot....

Hi I have a project I am working on and basically I am finding the key framing a little frustrating because I cant get the camera to do what I want. Ususally I have no problem in FCP but with Motion it doesnt seem as easy. Bascially what I have done is put up 7 of the same clip all in 3d spread down. What I want the camera to do is zoom close to one. Pause while you read what is on the clip then pan and zoom to the next one. The method I am doing is I hit the record button. Start the zoom to the first object then move timeline to where I want the camera to stop the zoom. I hit the record button again..wait a few frames and then hit it again so I can zoom to the next object. What seems to hahppen is the camera just starts moving to the other object and wont pause for those frames. I would like to know the best method for making this possible. Thanks

    hi,
edit them all! Just select them all and choose linear from the control pop up.
if that doesnt work, maybe you could try setting keyframes manually, like you would in FCP. You dont turn on the red button at all, but add keframes for the parameters you want to animate in the Inspector window.
Sometimes I find I have to add two keyframes a frame apart to give that definite stop. This also allows me to play with the timing of the pauses. So set a keyframe where the camera starts to move and one where it stops. Then a frame on set another keyframe without changing the values, then go to the next point you want the camera to move and set another keyframe.... and so on.

I am having a method with 500 lines.
I need to call the same method for more than 50 files.
How do I call the method.

I would love to help you.
    But I'm SO confused.
Can you try to be more specific?

  • Is anyone else making svg cut files with Illustrator?

I am hoping to learn more about using Illustrator to make svg cut files. I have a cutting machine (Silhouette SD) and have been making cut files with Illustrator to use with it. I hope to, at some point, sell my files so they have to be perfect. I have run into some problems however. My paths are being read as outlines and giving me an unwanted double cut. I went on line to see if anyone else has been having this problem as well and to my surprise I found that many people are using other software packages (MTC, SCAL and Inkscape) instead. So here are my questions...
    1. Is Illustrator the best software for making SVG cut files and why either way?
    2. Is there a place where I can learn more about making SVG cut files with Illustrator?
Thank you in advance for any input on this topic.

Also experiencing hang on quit. For me, it follows a bug where the main viewer pane quits working (which happens occasionally when I have the gall to try to play something before it's done rendering.) Main viewer pane won't update--just shows a video frozen video frame, won't even preview items in the event browser pane. Everything else appears to be working until I play, and when the playhead gets to the unrendered segment, FCP hangs--I assume it's the same hang that happens if I try to quit instead of playing, though that's a pure guess.
