Recomendation for an external dvd burner  10.3.9 idvd 4

now that i think i have been helped with the problem of idvd 4 not being able to burn directly to an external drive, it is time to do some burner shopping.
if anyone could suggest a burner for me to purchase, i would be most grateful.
i have no idea what i am looking for in a burner
please help

Hello Toby, I remember I had the same problem and I solved with the hurz/pfurz thing.
The problem was I needed to burn from iDVD, on my old iBook and I could do it once I copied the two files and followed the other instructions.
That "hack" never gave me conflicts with other applications and I was able to burn DVDs from wherever I wanted.
As for the drive suggestion, since they're now cheaper, go for a dual layer one, you'll be able to burn 9GBs DVDs then

I am looking for an external DVD burner.  Any suggestions?
I was looking at the OWC Mercury Pro units, but it looks like

If the internal optical drive is not working, consider getting an external that has FireWire (IEEE 1394) connectivity. That way, the external is bootable should you need to boot remotely to upgrade the OS or do repairs from an external disk.
That also avoid some of the USB power issues.

  • IDVD can't see my external dvd burner

Any idea how can i make iDVD 04 to see my external dvd burner?

    Hi Milton:
iDVD prior to Version 5 requires an internal drive, but I assume you know that hence your question.
You need this "Easter Egg" hack to make it work.

Congratulations on the new Mini. Are you saying you tried burning and it does not play, or do you want to burn it only for the computer to be able to play it?

  • Buying an external DVD burner, what to look for?

Hi, I am buying an external DVD burner in the morning, anything I should look for feature wise, any models which are recommended?
    Cheers, S.

Patrica, we'll forgive you this once! For future reference at the top of each Discussions Forum section there's a blue "Post a New Topic" link - that's where you start. Anyway as to your problem as to what to do now. You can ignore the "Easy Media Creator" disc - this is an application for Windows machines.
All you need now is a blank DVD to record onto. Usually LaCie include a complimentary DVD-R disc - didn't you get one?
It's useful because it will give you a good idea as to which brand of disc works best with your burner. My LaCie likes Maxell and Verbatim but not TDK even though it's on LaCies's approved list (which you can find on their website). Buy a small pack until you are sure they work OK. Whether you get DVD-R or DVD+R is up to you, but the minus format tends to work better with domestic DVD players.
I don't know what you want to burn onto DVD - is it files or movies? If it's the former you have all the software you need in Disk Utility. As far as I know iDVD on the other hand doesn't work with an external burner (someone please correct me if I'm wrong!) you need to buy something like Toast for that. I notice also that you're in the PowerBook forum although you have an iMac! Does this not have an internal DVD writer? I thought all versions of the G5 had a SuperDrive? My final bit of advice to you would be to get yourself whichever of these http://www.missingmanuals.com/ you feel you might need. Certainly the 10.3 book will help you enormously. Good luck.

Howdy! Welcome to the Apple Discussion Boards!
I have a good opinion of LaCie burners. I have had one for over two years now with nary a problem. I used it with a PB G4 12 inch model. It comes bundled with Toast Titanium, which is really good burning software, IMO.
As far as system specs, check out LaCie's website, but I think anything above 10.2 would be supported.

For the external drives, almost any Firewire burner will be supported by your PowerBook. Here are a few. You can further refine the filters.

  • Recommendations for External DVD Burner compatible with 10.5 Leopard?

We still have an older MacBook that we bought in 2007, it works great except for the CD/DVD drive. I need to be able to burn DVD's, could anyone recommend an External DVD Burner that would be compatible with 10.5 Leopard? Or at least give me an idea of what I need to look for to know if it should work before I buy it? Thank you!

  • Can i use mac mini as external dvd burner for my ibook?

i was wondering if i could hook up my dad's mac mini to my ibook in target disk mode to my ibook and if that would allow me to use his mac mini as an external dvd burner. if anyone knows if this would work or how to do it, let me know, thanks

Yes and no. You cannot connect the mini to your notebook and use its drive as if it were an external drive. But you can transfer data from your notebook to the mini and then burn the DVD. And, if you can set up a VNC (that's what Leopard screen sharing is) you could even control the mini from your notebook. Not as transparent a process as having an external burner. And, considering the low prices these days, if you really need to burn DVDs rather frequently, buying an inexpensive DVD burner is going to be more convenient.

  • Problems ripping with an external DVD Burner

    Hello Everyone,
Recently I purchased a Liteon External DVD Burner off of newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106011) -- It's a Liteon SHW-1635SX -- I bought this because the DVD-ROM drive thats in my tower natively is REALLY slow and I wanted to get a new one that I could use with a laptop that I`m going to purchase in the future. Whenever I try to rip a CD into iTunes using the burner, It says that it's ripping the disk, however it doesn't spin up the cd and it takes about 2 seconds to "rip" all the songs. I know this drive is soposed to be faster than my old one, But two seconds is a little TOO fast. Plus, I know that it's not copying the songs because when I try to listen to them in my library, the song won't play. (Under time it says "789:54..." for all the songs on the cd, in my library) However, the burner rips perfectly in Windows Media Player... Is this perhaps some kind of glitch with iTunes??? Basicly, the only way I can rip a CD into iTunes is to use my old DVDROM drive, but that defeats the purpose... below is the CD Diagnostic log that I got from iTunes::::::::

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.
Check the Windows Update website to verify that you have the latest service packs and patches for your OS. Service packs affect the performance of USB and firewire CD / DVD drives.

    hi Aric!
hmmm. we'd better check on the usual suspects with that. (the incredibly long song times can also be associated with these sorts of causes.)

  • Disk Utility won't burn with external dvd burner!!! HELP?!?!?!

    Hello anyone/everyone!
I need some help, I'm trying to burn a file using the disk utility. Only thing is that the disk utility wants to used the drive installed on my iBook (combo drive) and not my external DVD drive! I couldn't find a way to be able to chnage the default burner, and I was hoping that someone/anyone could help me out? The file is too large for a regular 800mb disk so I have to use the external dvd burner. Help me please oh wise-ones?!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Find out if the external burner is Patchburn compatible. If it is, then apply it from http://www.patchburn.de/
If not, I'd sell the external burner and get one that is compatible like those from http://www.macsales.com/
You may find other tricks on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ as well.

  • Burning discs through external DVD burner

I've bought an external DVD burner as PE 10 did not recognise the inbuilt one in windows 8.1.
It does not recognise the new burner either.
How can I tell it where to burn the disc as the "burner location" box is not accessible.
I've tried burning to folder instead and this is fine for playing discs on a computer but they will not play back on a TV through a DVD player in spite of choosing this option when burning discs.
    I hope I haven't wasted my money!

  • IMac G3 hooking up External DVD Burner

    Hey.
I'm trying to hook up an external DVD Burner to my iMac G3 to use with iLife '05 (I don't think the G3 is compatable with '06)
The problem is, my external USB 2.0 DVD burner I got for my Windows XP computer doesn't say it can be used for Mac OS X. I can take the wait of a movie being burned on a USB 1.1 connection.
Does Apple already have a generic driver for External DVD Burners like it does for Bluetooth?
I'd like to show off to my friends the awesome movie-making capabilities on a Mac, but it can't be done without a DVD burner.

Instead of using an external USB with iMacG3, I also recommend using a firewire one with it. iMac G3's are equipped with USB 1,1 and it is slow for cd/dvd burning. With a firewire case you can use all the speed of your writer.
On the other hand, some writers (CD-R or DVD-R) are not fully functioning with all applications. Toast can handle much of them but iTunes for example was not functioning with my old mitsumi CD-R. I prefered to buy an LG and now it works perfectly.

  • Using an external DVD burner with iBook G4

    Hi,
I am new to this ibook game so bear with me....I purchased an iBook G4 from ebay and hooked my Lacie external DVD burner up to it as it only has a combo drive. Anytime I try to burn DVDs though it says that it cannot use this disk. When I look in disc utility it says that the write ability of any DVD i insert is read only. Under system profiler my external burner does appear as drive type CD-RW/DVD-RW though. What can I do to burn DVDs? I am running osx 10.3.7 by the way and previously used my external burner with an old emac succesfully.

You could try and see if the external optical drive is supported through
third-party burn software, one example of which may be Burn, it is free.
    http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html
    {note: there are two links to download - one is for G3s only}
Is the cable you have in good health and do you have a known good spare?
    And update the OS X to 10.3.9. Get the large file 'combo' for this;
and then check for security updates, java updates, etc. Be sure
to run Disk Utility's 'repair disk permissions' before & after updates.
You will have to update the Panther 10.3.x system to 10.3.9 and also
get any other updates available to the system. This may be why the
external drive won't work in the present computer. Also, Burn needs
to have 10.3.9 or later in order to work, too...
    Hopefully this helps...
    Good luck & happy computing!
