  • Can you purchase memory for iMac intel 2008

I want to add memory to my iMac (20 inch Early 2008) but apple store online says no memory available for this model. Is that it? Do I have to purchase a new computer to get more memory?

You will find memory modules for your computer at OWC and DataMem for less than Apple charges for memory. You don't have to buy a new computer for more memory. You can install:
    Maximum Memory
6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMMs
The largest module you can install is 4 GBs.

  • My iMac4 has depleted its disk space, a fter numerous rebuilds the database is still generating error messages My external HD is basically my storage for all data. Is it feasible to purchase Memory...?

If this is a viable option how would I connect the memory in an effort to purchase additional disk space and upgrade to Lion? I currently use Snow Leopard as my OS but there are too many compatibility issues to consider. Thank you for your response. Cheers.

You are confusing RAM (Random Access Memory) with data storage space on a hard drive.
Cloud ( offsite server data storage) services to purchase remote data storage are NOT going to help you with this issue.
You need to free up disk space on your Mac's internal hard drive.
Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a computer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto or Aperture, both have its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you are an iMovie/ Final Cut user, both apps have their own individual Trash location that needs to be emptied, too!
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
    http://www.omnigroup.com/more
    Also, Find Any File
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/downloadonyx.php
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Moving iTunes library

    Moving iPhoto library

    Moving iMovie projects folder

Things to consider before moving your iPhoto Library Folder to a new or external location like an external hard drive.
If you make movies on any iDevices using iMovie for iOS,, then transfer the video footage, the IOS version of iMovie saves the footage as a movie file in IPhoto for IOS and will automatically get transferred to iPhoto for the Mac when you upload the video from your iDevice.
Newer versions of iMovie will work and link those video files found in your iPhoto Library on your Mac, but those links can be lost if you move your iPhoto library and you will not be able to relink that video afterwards as the current versions of iMovie seem to not have a relink option for the video portion of the files (ironically, current versions of iMovie HAVE the ability to re-link the audio files from the video footage, though  (The inability to re-link the video files could be a possible bug or oversight in current versions iMovie).
The lost video links show up as "blacked-out" video blocks with no content.
    Before moving the iPhoto Library
If you make movies with iMovie using iPad or iPhone video then 'Consolidate' the files before you finish. This will gather (albeit by duplicating) all the relevant files in the project in one place. After consolidating/duplicating all of the audio and video footage to a seperate, independent location,it should be safe to move your iPhoto library.
The potential way to circumvent this issues maybe to try and import  iPad and iPhoto video directly into iMovie which would be another solution.
    Good Luck!

  • 10.4.11 - help upgrading memory

    Hello!
I have a 2006 imac (I believe it is considered early, but I purchased it in May 2006). I've always had one memory slot empty and 1GB of memory in the other. This past May my hard drive crashed and I replaced it, and now I'm starting to notice that it has been running slowly, especially when using iphoto, and so I would like to add 1GB of memory to the empty slot. I tried purchasing memory from the apple store, but they no longer have memory for my model and I'm not really sure how to find the correct memory for my computer. Here is the overview:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac4,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM41.0055.B08
    SMC Version: 1.1f5
    Serial Number: QP61609WV4M
Could someone please tell me what memory I need and where I can find it? Any help will be greatly appreciated!!
Also - I'm interested in upgrading my OS to leopard or snow leopard - with the 2GB of memory will it run well on my computer? My hard drive is 350 GB and I'm only using 80 GB. If so, can I just purchase the $29 disc or do I have to purchase the $169 pack?
    Thank you!

    any experience with that site?
Limited experience with them, & likely their IntelMac RAM is OK.
The guy at the store told me it is closest in quality to memory directly from Apple.
Of the RAM I've had go bad, all but one stick was original Apple RAM, to be fair when they come out with new models they're generally using the newest/latest/fastest at that point, & manufacturing may not have production down pat until later.
will anything on my computer be wiped out, or is it an easy install?
No, SL defaults to what we used to call Archive & Install, which preserves all your stuff, just new OS & new of some Apple Apps.
Just be sure to Open Disk Utility & Verify the Drive first, (not Verify Permissions).
I'm debating on whether to upgrade it or not because I love tiger, I'm just frustrated that I cannot buy a new ipod, an ipad, Adobe CS5 or the magic mouse because none of those things will run on Tiger.
Yep, if you need any of those things, SL is a must then, but I prefer Tiger myself & have no need of any of those.

  • Why does my iMac only have 1 GB of memory?  I hardly have anything on here.  I cannot download software update in order to get Turbo Tax to work.

Why does my iMac only have 1 GB of memory?

Put in more RAM. Visit OWC, DataMem, or Crucial.com to purchase memory for your model. You computer would have more memory had you put more in a long time ago.

  • Memory to go website...

Anybody use the www.memorytogo.com website to purchase memory. I noticed they have several selections for the PowerMac G5. An OEM version and Samsung. Just curious which is better? The prices seem to be pretty good compared to some of the local stores.

    DVX100Shooter-
I never used that company. I have used memory from www.datamem.com. The prices seem comparable to the memorytogo site, and they are located in NH so the shipping to you should be fairly quick.
I have never had anything but excellent service from these folks.

It shouldn't cost you a fortune, John.  I usually find Apple re-sellers very obliging on matters like this.  Where did you buy your memory from?   If it was Apple retail they may help and explain about the residue at the same time.
It's not unusual to meet difficulties with the fitting of memory but the residue is something I haven't met before.

  • Good Memory (something I don't have :-D)

Any suggestions where I could find good quality memory at an inexpensive price (ebay and ebay like auctions exclude please.)
I've got only a default 64mb in my dear old Lombard (which I'm resurrecting by hand [ritual chanting in the background]) so I could use with school, but unfortunately the software I need to use for school (BlueJ Java programming) requires OSX. I've got 10.1.5 running but it seems slower than a snail at times
    even when logging in.
I would like to install Jaguar on it at the least but optimistically run Panther or even Tiger (via Xpostfacto.)
    Thanks for the help

I can recommend Mac Solutions on price, speed of delivery and perfect memory.
I have purchased memory from them for several different Macs (iMacs, PowerBooks, iBooks) and have never had a failure or a problem. And in all cases, they had the lowest price. That has been my experience.

    Your brevity is impressive.
Please tell us a few more details, like operating system, how much memory you have (and how much did you have before), what error messages you are getting, do other programs work, and the exact sequence of steps you went through from purchasing memory (I assume you mean you installed the memory as well, but please tell us if that is what you mean) to the inability to open "adobe" (I assume you mean Photoshop Elements, but please tell us what you really mean)

  • G7-2235dx - Memory Slot Defective/Memory Does Not Fit In Slot

Recently I purchased a 4GB module of DDR3 1600 PC3 12800 for my laptop. I recieved it today and proceded to install it following the direcitons given in my laptop's user manuel. But the memory never snapped into place. It seems like the retention clips are not long enough or there is something blocking the module from going into the memory slot fully. I found this odd. After finding that the memory did not fit into the slot, I removed the factory HP memory module from it's slot and attempted to put it into the spare/defective slot. It also did not fit. Just for clarification, I tested the purchased memory in the workign slot and the memory works perfectly. I am wondering what might be the issue with my memory slot.
I called HP support and they said it would cost me $290 for the slot to be repaired. I find that way to much considering I only paid $300 for the laptop itself.
    Any help is apprechiated.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

This is two stacked memory slots, right? Look inside the offending slot and see if maybe there is a chunk of dirt in there. It would not take much to block the memory module from seating fully. If you see something in there blow it out with compressed air.
This is the picture of the memory slot from the Service Manual. It does not do a good job of showing that there are 2 stacked slots. They are slightly offset so the top module is a bit below the bottom module when both are in place. Was the original single module in the top or bottom slot; likely the bottom?

  • Cost of upgrading ram memory?

    Hello
Does anyone know how much the Apple store will charge for upgrading RAM memory from 16gb to 32 gb on a newer 27" iMac (mid 2013)?
    Many thanks
    Kaylee

Much more than you would pay if you were to upgrade it yourself. On new iMacs, Apple charges $200 to upgrade it from 8 GB to 16, and $600 to upgrade from 8 GB to 32.
If you already own your iMac, the answer depends on its present memory configuration. If all your DIMM slots are occupied, you need to purchase four 8 GB DIMMs for a total cost of about $400. If you already have two 8 GB DIMMS, you only need to obtain two more for about half that much. Determine what you have by going to the  (Apple menu) and selecting About This Mac then click More Info... then Memory.
Purchase memory from OWC / MacSales or Crucial. Memory upgrades for your iMac are considered user-performed maintenance and installation is simple.

  • Preferred brand of memory

I've read the various posts and links to purchase memory, but does anyone have a favorite type they know works well? I have the late 2006 iMac Core 2 Duo 20inch and have 1GB RAM now and was thinking of making it 2GB.
Also, I haven't open the panel yet, so are there 2 slots filled with 512? Are there only 2 slots (meaning I would have to buy a 2GB memory chip)?
    Thanks!

Go to: "Apple / About this Mac / More Info" this opens your "System Profiler" then in the "Hardware" section select "Memory". You should see a 512MB module in each slot. If you want to upgrade to 2GB you will need 2x1GB ram modules. Core 2 Duo support a max of 3GB, that would be 1x1GB and 1x2GB module.
    Installing and replacing memory (RAM)
Here's a good place to start shopping
Besure the ram modules are mac compatible and have a life time warranty. I have 2x1GB Corsair modules, one I've had for a year and the other now matching I just purchased and installed last week.
