Recomended Broadband Speeds for new Apple TV

I was about to purchase an Apple Tv earlier today, but wanted to check the recommended broadband speeds for the service.
We suffer from speeds of 2.5mbps; probably not a problem with Apple TV - being able to download to the HDD for viewing later. However, streaming only is a little concerning - especially as we'd be looking at HD stuff.
Have Apple said what speeds are required? Is contents buffered to some sort of memory until it is ready to be viewed.

The avatar HD film was 5.8gb in size from the itunes store. My internet speed is usually around 9.8mbps but can drop down to 7mbps in busy times. I rent HD films a lot and it usually takes about 20 seconds to 1 minute from pressing rent to being able to play the HD movies. Only once have I had an issue with the film freezing up half way through, it turned out the internet went down on my ISP side of things.
As apposed to having 2.5mbps I am not to sure on times but it would just be a case of waiting longer at the beginning before pressing play, for the film to build up in the buffer so you don't catch up to where the film has got to in downloading. That is if my understanding of the apple tv downloads and plays at same time is right! If I am wrong I would be very interested in knowing exactly how it works.
But to answer the question at the beginning I have not seen an official minimum download speed for the apple tv but looks like from other peoples experiences you can't go wrong with something bigger than 6/7mbps.

  • I have working Netgear network. Want to add new Time Capsule and run 2nd network for new apple TV and Imac, and keep the netgear network for my PC and Canon printer.

I have working Netgear N600 dual band router network. The existing network has an XP netbook PC, canon printer, 2 Iphones, Epson Air printer, an Ipad, 3 roku boxes, backup drive. Just bought a new Apple TV box, and time capsule 2T.  I have an IMac on order but don't have it here yet.
My goal is to add new Time Capsule and create 2nd "apple" network for new apple TV, Iphones, Ipad, Epson Air printer and new Imac, and keep the netgear network for my PC, Roku TV boxes, and Canon printer and backup drive.
The Netgear router, the time capsule and new IMac will be on the same desktop, I dont need to backup my netbook PC to time capsule.
    Where do I start?
Which device connects to my modem first, the TC2 or the Netgear?
Is it best wait for the Imac before starting or can the TC2 be set up from my Ipad or PC?
    Thanks.

    It is pretty simple..
Setup the TC in bridge and plug it into the Netgear.. I would leave the netgear as the main router for now, although in the future you can swap things around. The netgear firmware may have issues with bonjour and airplay/airprint?? Does your ipad print ok now?
You can setup the TC using Mac, PC (at least up to win7) or iOS.. they all have airport utility available.
Bridge mode is set differently depending on the version of the utility. This is v5 and how the windows one will look (at least similar to).
    v6 will be as
With the TC in bridge you will still create a wireless network.. and give it a different name from the netgear.. then all the apple devices can connect to it. Use ethernet rather than wireless if the imac is on the desktop with it. Much faster and better for using Time Machine backups.
If you run into any issues.. just post the particular issue. It will take a bit of getting used to, but isn't hard.

Is iweb available for new apple computers?

To access you iWeb domain file you will want to click on your desktop. Then use the Go Menu. hold the option key to reveal the Library. Then Application Support-> iWeb
That's where your iWeb domain file should be.

  • Audio Cable Requirements for New Apple TV

I'm about to order a new Apple TV. The specs are a little unclear on the audio side, as it says it has an optical audio output. However, does the HDMI port do audio out as well, or do I NEED an optical audio cable in addition to HDMI when my TV supports HDMI? Thanks for the help.

HDMI will carry audio. No need for a separate optical cable unless you want to run it to another device such as a receiver/amp.

  • Slow broadband speed for a while

    Hello,
We had speed problems with our broadband last year, eventually an engineer came out and modified the socket so it looked like this:
Which is the I-plate/BT accelerator socket?
After a few days, our broadband speed increased to this level:
However, sometime late last year. Wester Power Distribution were performing some maintenance work on the power cables outside. During this work, the power was cut a few times and unfortunately it interrupted our broadband signal. Despite performing a power-cycle test on the router and connecting the ethernet cable to a different port, the only way to get the internet working again was to reset the router and input the login details etc again. Even though this happened qute a few months back, our broadband speed still hasn't returned to its previous speed. Here's the latest speedtest which was done today:
I thought that once the router maintained a constant connection to the exchange for over a week, the DSL connection rate and IP profile would increase. In such a case, why has my connection rate remained low?
    Thank you.
    Emyr.

Could you post your Router ADSL stats with show detail selected. Ppl will be able to help better then.

  • Very Slow Broadband Speed for 2 months, and very U...

    Hi
I know exactly how you feel (Giza). I took out BT Total Broadband and had it installed on 02/12/2010. Day one I have 6.75 mbps, which was great as my previous provider only gave me 5 mbps max. So I was well please.
Then day two it dropped to 4.35 mbps, not much to worry about, just though as it was Friday the network would be busy. Then on day 3, I was getting 0.65 mbps, and I have battling with BT ever since.
I have had the usual c**p from BT in India about moving the router due to interference etc, but of course non of them worked. Finally they advised I needed an engineer to come out, so I booked it for next working day between8am and 1pm, he arrived at 12.45, so a good job I took the day off work.
All he did was re-wire by master socket, called a help desk and told them to reset my IP profile, and was going in 30 minutes. He just told me to keep and eye on my speed as it should get faster within 5 hours. 48 hours later still at 0.65 mbps. So once again called BT to be told they are still working on the problem and will contact me when it is fixed. Two week later, still no increase in speed.
So I called them and they apologise for not getting back to but they were very busy. Their solution was that I needed another engineer to visit. So again I book the next available slot, but this time for afternoon slot 13.00 to 18.00 hours, so I only need half a day off work (obviously BT don't realise people work).
He arrived at 13.45, and he seem very knowledgeable to the other guy, and he even advised he had worked for BT for over 28 years. He check the line coming into the house first then the same test at my socket, and advised there was not problems there and my line was above average quality and I was on a ADSL2 21C exchange (whatever that means), so he decided to go to the cabinet at the end of the my street, he was gone about 45 mins. He came back to advise it appeared I was cross-communicating with another circuit. He did another line test, but had to call the help desk to reset my line again as it was not giving his little box of tricks access to my full capacity.
Buy the time he was done it was 17.45, and had got me up to 10.9 mbps hand-shake with the exchange (I was so please I could have kissed him), and rang through to another help desk to reset my IP profile again to increase my speed, but as it finished at 18.00 he waited to see if it was done, but did say it can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours for the request to be processed.
So left the computer on, and did some chores. Now when he left my router had been connected for over an hour and a half and he advised there should be no reason for it reset. At 18.15 the router crashed, when it came back the hand-shake had gone down to 9.6 mbps, but my speed was still at 0.65 mbps.  Then at 6.30 the router crashed again, then again, and again. Finally came back on at about 19.00. The hand-shake had come back at only 4.55 mbps.
Then at 19.30 I got a call from BT to say they were calling to see if I was happy with the service and had the engineer fixed the problem. Funnily enough just as they called the router crashed again. So I advised them of the above, and was told to do a hard reset on the router (use a paper click to press the reset button). Waited till I was re-connected. I was then told to test my speed at speedtest.net. Which I did, and I was getting, wait for it 2.35 mbps. The woman on the end of the phone advised, there you go it is fixed.
To which I clearly advised was not the case, and I should be getting 8.5 mbps as per the engineers advised. She all she could say was she needed to speak to the technical team and call me back. Which I was surprised she did at 20.20. Next action is to have another engineer come out and check the fault.
So now I am on my 3rd engineers visit, booked for this Friday afternoon. I did call the help desk, and asked for my service to be cancelled as I was that mad and upset about the service, but was told that as it was not BT's fault over my speed (god know's who's fault it is) I would need to pay for the remaining 15 months of my 18 month contract, but if I got the engineer to note on my account on Friday that it was their fault, I could cancel free of charge.
So been at work all day today, and though I would check my speed. Hand-shake now at 1.15 mbps, and my speed is at 0.65 mbps once again.
While writing this, I did not notice my Hub has once again crashed, and is just sat on yellow for Broadband. Of course if you are reading this I got it re-connected.

    Good fun isn't it

  • .Mac Alias  - Small Niggling Problem for New Apple User

    Hi,
I have very recently purchased my very first Apple computer - and yes, i am one of those life long MS-DOS/Windows users who have been lured by the ease and simplicity of the iPod (which apparently a lot of people are loath to admit, but hey, I'm not proud).
Anyhow, having got my nice new shiny system out of its box, and up and running, I set-up up a new .MAC account, and then set-up one alias, the thing is my 'alias' mail is not ending up in my .Mac mailbox, but my other mailbox which belongs to my broadband ISP.
Basically in Apple Mail ( I have OS X Tiger.10.4.3) I have an 'InBox' which shows everything from my two accounts, and separate mailboxes within : One called 'BlueYonder' who is my broadband ISP, and a second mailbox called '.Mac Mail'. IYSWIM?
Now ALL of the mail sent to my standard .Mac account address ends up in the .Mac mailbox, and the 'collective' InBox, but and here is the puzzle, any mail sent to my .Mac ''alias'' goes into the 'Collective' InBox and my 'BlueYonder' mailbox, but not into my .Mac mailbox!
I sent an email to the .Mac support team, and they said that it was either an issue with Apple Mailbox, and that I should look in here at the 'Discussions' or I have a Rule set-up.
Well I don't have a rule set-up except the one that was already set-up when I first bought my system. This is set to just highlight in Blue any mail from any 'Apple' address. No rules are set to move or change locations etc.
So can anyone,if possible please advise me what is going on with my mailbox and also how I can rectify it if possible please?
Thanks and all the best for the New year to you all.

Drusus - would be good for you to share your findings here. It might help anyone else with the same problem in the future.
    Thanks,
    Brocks.

  • Frontside BUS speed for new ram in an emac

I just added a RAM stick to a friend's emac (1.25 GHZ G4) and the chip says that it is rated for PC3200 but the computer system profiler says that it is only running at PC2700. Is there a way to increase that setting to utilize all the speed??
    kt

    Hi,
Judging by the specifications here, the eMac only supports PC2700.

  • Suggestion for new Apple Communities

(If not already suggested, that is.)
Anyway, perhaps the "My Posts" area (if there will be one) could be set to show which posts were marked as "Helpful" or "Solved". There would be the appropriate star next to either the number or the title.
    Thoughts?

I know there is some sort of reason for this date, but it just doesn't have "a ring" to it - can't you do something about changing that by just one day:
12-20-12 Now that has a ring to it: say 12/20 or 2012....

  • Slow broadband speed for weeks and sometimes drops...

I am having a slow broadband, getting very slow download and time-out.
Have a look at my BT Hub 2's line status.  This hub is connected to the main socket, no other sockets or extension as I have cut out the internal cable extension to the faceplate (to rule out any interference or any problem with internal cable).
It is still the same and it gets quite a lot of errors in the space of nearly 15 hours, is this not good?
