Recomended configurations for creating video for the web

I'm working on a project creating video segments for the web (no plans for broadcast of DVD) and I'm looking for opinions on the most efficient way to use FCP to do this. We are shooting with an HD camera with a green screen and composting a couple of additional layers of Motion graphics and we found that the render times were really long. I'm looking for ways to mitigate this, on thing we did was switch from shooting in 1080p to 720p. We also tried shooting at 24fps instead of the broadcast 60fps and that cut our render time by a good percentage. Since the final product is going to be 640 by 360 at 15fps it seems like a good trade off but are there any down sides I'm not thinking of.
I was also wondering if there might be an advantage to working at the size of the final product, if the FCP sequence were 640 by 360 would there be any advantages in terms of render times and what might the disadvantages would be.
This is my first semi-professional project, just been a hobbyist up until now so any advice is appreciated.

those simple steps reduced the number of pixels in each frame from about a million to 750,00, about 25%; and you reduced the number of frames from 30 or 60 to 24 or 48. So, yeah, your rendering times are going down. If your Motion project has ten HD layers you're saving tons of processing.

Absolutely. But you engaged the project without knowing how you were going to accomplish anything; implies your plans for improving workflow will be similarly incomplete. We all got by with NTSC and plan ol' DV for decades. The web is a low end distribution system, not a theatrical viewing experience. You can force your viewers to download a huge file and watch it on their TVs or you can open it up in weensy teeny window on their iPhones.

Purists will be correct in telling you better source footage results in better uploads. I will tell you that's true but it's academic. Your realworld needs are based on your web upload, not your plans to archive high def footage for future exploitation.
Here's what I'd do: Work backwards. Figure out what your upload needs are--exactly. Research Compressor and other compression systems to determine how you are going to process your project to get the target output. Now decide what format that software wants to process to create the best results. then figure out how you want to provide that input for the compression application. then figure out what the tradeoffs are for your original footage in terms of your camera resources, your skills with the camera, and your mistaken impression that effects and chromakey should be fast.

  • Need advice on codecs for posting video on the web

I am attempting to post a 2 minute trailer (from FCP 4) to the web. I would like to post one version in Quicktime and One in Windows Media Player
I have been experimenting with varios codecs and have found that sorenson 3 works well for quick time but have found nothing that works well for AVI (media player)
Can someone suggest export settings (i.e. formats, codecs, etc.) to export the clip for web display.
I am new to this so I may be overlooking some pretty standard settings that are geared for web display in Quicktime and Media Player --so if there is some standard default settings I should be using, please suggest those.
    THanks.

Yes, I did mean 20 megs not 20 gigs and I understand that at 20 megs that still might be on the high side. I guess 10 - 12 megs would be nice.
In any event, I will look for the wmv file but don't know that i have flip4mac - never even heard of it before. (does it come standard with FCP?)
My computer is now goes through 79% of a download and then stops everytime. It seems I fix one problem and create 2 more. Yikes. Perhaps I will put up a separate post for that problem.

  • Software for playing videos from the Web

    Hi all,
As a regular vistor of all sports websites especially, as well as your funnyvideoclips site etc, I am horrified that my N95 won't play any videos. Why can't the video player used for watching movies I've actually taken be used. Even on BBC's site I cannot view interviews or actual sports footage.
I'd be grateful to know what my options are and in the most basic of terms as I'm not technically proficient - or good at spelling.

Open the Video Center, and go select the optional Internet feeds. More and more are being added from time to time.

YouTube mobile http://m.youtube.com (just use this address in your browser)
    SonyPictures
    FreeBee TV
Google Video (download the ipod or PSP version of the video it should play correctly)
Also use Podcasting application to subscribe to Video Podcasts.
Some websites that stream in RealPlayer mode can be watched with N95. But if they stream Flash (FLV) or WMV then it's a no go.
    Hope this helps.

  • Creating video for web

    Hi,
I'm currently putting together some videos in FCP for our new website. I've used FCP a lot for creating video for DVD's and exporting to .mov but converting to flash is relatively new to me.
I am using the On2 Flix FLV exporter to export direct from FCP to a 704 x 396 flv file.
Can someone clarify how I should set up my sequence in FCP to get the best quality results? All the source material is DV PAL for video (720 x 576 anamorphic) and PNG-24 for still images (in this case a background which I will input text over in FCP). Should I be setting all my sequences to 704 x 396, and what pixel aspect ratio should I use seeing as it is for flash/web use?
Also, in the Sequence Settings dialog box what should I set as the Compressor settings (dv pal/h.264 etc) as flv does not appear as an option?
    Thanks
    Jack

Thanks guys. So if I am to carry on working in the standard DV-Pal sequence I'm wondering what to do when importing graphics. I have been given a psd which contains a title screen that will be placed before each video. The psd has been given to me at 704 x 396 - the size of the final delivered FLV rather than the DV Pal sequence. When I bring this image into FCP and render it makes the image look pixelated/blocky (I'm exporting from Photoshop as a PNG-24). What is the proper way to export graphics for use in Final Cut? Should I re-size the image to match the sequence or bring it in at 704x396 and have Final Cut resize it?
    Thanks

  • Creating videos for web with QuickTime Pro

    HI,
I need to create videos for my web site that are compatible with the Ipod. However, I also need to create a file that can be played on a PC, without requiring the use to install a plug in (e.g. Flash or similar).
Does QuickTime Pro have anything that can help me produce a video that is compatible with both the Ipod and the standard PC web browser?
    Thanks very much,
    Jamie Dolan

Every video format will require a browser plug-in be used.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you want to change date format for ‘Created’ field in the getVersions web service.
Per my knowledge, you can get the date format for ‘Created’ field as “MM/dd/yyyy HH:mm a”.
For more information, you can refer to:

  • Cannot export video clips.  Get message: "unable to create video for export"

Cannot export video clips from iPhoto to Finder folder.  Export fails with message "unable to create video for export: "
The video clips play correctly within iPhoto.
Software: iPhoto version 9.5 on OSX 10.9
    Hardware: Retina Macbook Pro 2.3 i7 8GB

Yes.  I have 3,184 video clips in this library.  I tested Reveal function by randomly selecting individual video clips and in every case the Reveal in Finder function worked correctly.  I also tested this on random selections of groups of video clips and, again, the Reveal function worked correctly in every case.
Some more info that may be relevant:
I have multiple iPhoto libraries.  My "main" library is very large (~30,000 files) and is located on an external hard drive (2TB WD) which is connected via USB.
The problem reported here is occuring on that "main" library.  I have not opened any other iPhoto library since installing the new release.
While the File>Export function does not work, I have been able to simply copy and paste video clips from iPhoto library to a folder on Mac hard drive.  It appears that meta data is copying correctly along with the video content.
I am able to import these copied video clips to iMovie.  Meta data is imported along with the video content and I'm able to perform iMovie editing functions on those clips without any problems.
In summary, the File>Export function still fails with the message "unable to create video for export."  Copying video clips and pasting them to interim folder seems to be a viable workaround enabling me to extract video clips from iPhoto for import to iMovie.  I will run additional tests to see if I can find a pattern to the video files that are being rejected by iPhoto Export function.

  • Creating video for YouTube - which user settings?

I've seen a lot of posts about converting video for posting on YouTube but I can't find any information on the best sequence setting to CREATE video for posting on YouTube. I'm making a 30-45 second promotional video that will be entirely made up of stills/text and music, so I'm just going to be doing moves on jpegs. YouTube videos are now displayed 640.360, but I can't find a FCP sequence preset that will allow me to create a video at that size. Am I missing something? Should I just create it at some other widescreen setting then convert it down? Trying to keep this is simple as possible -- do not want to have to render every clip in the timeline.
    thanks,
    p

    Am I missing something?
Make your original video in one of the codecs supported by Final Cut Pro. You will find a list of possible codecs in the Easy Setup menu.
do not want to have to render every clip in the timeline...
Your source material is JPEG images. While they can be imported, they don't use a codec of their own. They will have to be rendered.

  • Creating Video for HTML5 on MacPro

Hello Everyone, How would I go about creating video for the Ipad on a Macpro? I use to use flash but I guess I had to go to HTML5. Any good programs anyone out there recommends?
    Thanks

You can use iMovie. If you "Export using QuickTime" (Share menu in iMovie '09) and use the Apple TV preset it should work just fine. You can, I believe, also use the "Export Movie" -> HD preset if you have HD-quality content; the iPad can play up to 720p.
    Regards.
P.S. There is as of yet no defined standard for video codecs in HTML5. Just for the sake of accuracy.

  • HT201177 I can't play videos on the web - they just stall - stop and start.

when I am playing videos on the web, Vimeo for example, they play for about one or two seconds and stall.  Then they play another one or two seconds and so on for the entire video.  I have no means of changing the download size in safari preferences.  I am at a loss what to do.  i know of no-one else with this difficulty and the Microsoft laptop on the same broadband router dos not have this problem.

Empty the Cache, and you can also try the RE-SET Safari option from the menu-bar.

  • Quicktime Pro and getting videos off the web

I am bound and determined to get videos off the web and use them to make my own videos and what not. I was wondering if quicktime pro is the best program to use for my project. I have downloaded other programs that don't work and I am sick of the hassle. If there is a sure thing program anyone knows about, I'd love to know. Otherwise, it would be great to hear about quicktime pro and it's adeptness or otherwise at successfully getting videos off the web.

Okay I figured out how to do that, but once it is downloaded, I am still having trouble. I don't know which application to use to open the file. Quicktime won't open it because it says it's not a movie file. I downloaded a standalone player and that couldn't open it either. What do I do?

  • Why can't I play videos on the web?

When I try to watch videos from twitter or download videos from the web, it doesn't work! The screen just stays blank and nothing happens! Please help someone!

Depends entirely on the webpage that's serving them. Some will have an HTML5 or other non-Flash way to supply video to mobile devices. For example, the Youtube app in iOS uses HTML5 to display all Youtube videos.

  • HD video on the web? Question. Need help

We just started producing HD video. Coming from SD video. In today’s web age can’t most people in the U.S. view 720p video on the internet?
Our company produces instructional videos that get delivered to the clients by DVD but we also have moved forward to viewing online. My problem is I’m not sure how to approach my web guy about HD video over the web. I would say most of our clients have a fast connection. He is asking for all the old SD videos and me to convert them to .webm/.ogm/.mp4 so he’s doing HTML5. How does this work with HD so the client can have that as an option? He is asking for 400 kbps for our current SD videos and he gets worried when a video is like 60MB so that worries me that he doesn’t know much.
How does bitrate work with HD video? How should we provide it?

Thanks. This was my web guy's response (below). Our current videos (SD) are around 450kbps. I'm testing out exporting an H.264 720p (8 mins long) at 1.3 Mbps and the file size is only about double and looks pretty good. How should i respond? agggg
Using the HD option will eat our servers alive.
HD is typically delivered on blueray, not dvd, and your talking about 25 gigs on a blueray dvd…  The web servers use more expensive hard drives to where the amount of space needed and cost would triple the hosting that we use.
With increased file size comes with increased bandwidth.  Again, we use around 500-750GB a month during the busy season , if the video is 10 times the size, we will use 10 times the amount of bandwidth.
In all reality, we pay about $500 a month for our current hosting environment.  If we wanted to upgrade to an environment that we can stream hd video, we’d be looking at no less than $2000-3000 a month, maybe more.
